:00:51. > :00:54.Channel Islanders will be thinking about their heating bills, but are

:00:54. > :00:58.you getting value for money? The competition watchdog has announced

:00:58. > :01:02.it will be monitoring any further price increases in domestic heating

:01:02. > :01:11.oil. Beckie Williams has been to meet an islander who made the

:01:11. > :01:14.Living in a large house, Sarah Johnson has always relied on a oil

:01:14. > :01:19.to eat her home, but when her bills kept going up, she decided to

:01:19. > :01:22.switch to electricity. Definitely, the bills that come in, you can see

:01:22. > :01:29.the difference, not a huge difference, but a marginal

:01:29. > :01:32.difference between the tier, and electricity is cheaper. The oil

:01:32. > :01:36.company says there is still high demand, even though the cost in

:01:36. > :01:40.Jersey is higher than in the UK. That is because we have additional

:01:40. > :01:45.charges bringing fuel into Jersey and onward distribution that are

:01:45. > :01:48.quite significantly different to the UK. Nonetheless, the Ireland's

:01:48. > :01:53.competition watchdog is worried that customers are not getting

:01:53. > :01:57.value for money. They want the industry regulator. -- the island.

:01:57. > :02:02.And it is not just Sarah who is changing suppliers. Daniel and his

:02:02. > :02:07.team were on the road early this morning to fit an electrical boiler

:02:07. > :02:12.at this house. Jersey Electricity has seen a 30% increase in the

:02:12. > :02:17.number of people wanting to switch from gas and oil. In fact, the

:02:17. > :02:20.waiting list for a consultation is now several weeks. There have been

:02:20. > :02:25.a huge increase in calls for electric heating system is driven

:02:25. > :02:29.by the competitive price of electricity at the moment. This is

:02:29. > :02:34.the third winter with no tariff increase, and that has come at a

:02:34. > :02:38.time when oil and gas prices have gone up by over 60%. Let's take a

:02:38. > :02:48.closer look at the prices companies charged in Jersey. We have looked

:02:48. > :03:06.

:03:06. > :03:11.at the average cost for a three- Electricity prices may well go up

:03:11. > :03:21.in April, but with diminishing supplies of oil and gas worldwide,

:03:21. > :03:25.could even more islanders switch to There has been a further increase

:03:25. > :03:30.in unemployment in Guernsey. It has risen by almost a third since this

:03:30. > :03:34.time last year, and there are now 400 people out of work,

:03:34. > :03:37.representing 1.2% of the population. Hospital managers are to meet

:03:37. > :03:40.regularly to discuss problems with patient care following the death of

:03:40. > :03:46.a woman last year after she was discharged from Jersey's General

:03:46. > :03:49.Hospital. Doctors treating Susan Smith, who was 57, for suspected

:03:49. > :03:52.gallstones did not realise she had severe liver disease. Her liver was

:03:52. > :03:56.not able to process the mix of drugs she was prescribed after she

:03:56. > :03:59.was discharged. She collapsed within hours of leaving hospital

:03:59. > :04:04.and died. And Jersey's health officials are

:04:04. > :04:07.ageing islanders who have had metal on metal hip replacements to

:04:07. > :04:12.contact the general hospital for an examination. This follows a recall

:04:12. > :04:15.by UK regulators of a brand of metal hip replacements. It has been

:04:15. > :04:20.found that when it wears down, it releases shards into the

:04:20. > :04:24.surrounding joint. Now, are you doing enough to

:04:24. > :04:27.protect your children when they go online? The senior representative

:04:27. > :04:31.from the Social Network website this book is going to be in

:05:00. > :05:03.children do not filter information that they give out. If anyone says,

:05:03. > :05:08.where do you live? They would give out their address, they are eager

:05:09. > :05:13.to please. They want to be popular, so they would give out anything,

:05:13. > :05:19.won't they? Insuring children are safe online is something Guernsey

:05:31. > :05:35.-- a representative of Facebook. You do not know what you do not

:05:35. > :05:39.know. Many parents do not know about the environment their

:05:39. > :05:43.children are operating in. You might learn enough to be able to

:05:43. > :05:48.put a valuable foothold back into their online world. And do what you

:05:48. > :05:53.do best as parents, which is be able to help your child manage and

:05:58. > :06:01.are talking about the worldwide web, and that is what terrifies me,

:06:01. > :06:07.everything out there. You are exposed to the whole world, not

:06:07. > :06:13.just Guernsey. I think it is just realising that children as Zheng as

:06:41. > :06:47.BBC Radio Jersey will be taking part in a campaign to promote

:06:47. > :06:51.online safety for young people. It took firefighters four hours to

:06:51. > :06:55.deal with a blaze in Guernsey today. The alarm was raised just before 10

:06:55. > :06:59.o'clock when a bonfire burned out of control on a site at St Peter's.

:06:59. > :07:03.Three fire engines were said to the scene, along with officers from

:07:03. > :07:06.environmental health. No-one was injured and there was no damage to

:07:06. > :07:11.surrounding property. You are watching the BBC in the

:07:11. > :07:15.Channel Islands, late in Spotlight, do you know what a galanthophile

:07:48. > :07:52.The Green Lions have suffered a postponement and a defeat recently,

:07:52. > :07:57.but they enjoy a seven-point lead at the head of Combined Counties

:07:57. > :08:02.League Division One. Tomorrow they take on 12th place Frimley Green,

:08:02. > :08:06.they beat 5-0 in August. Kick-off is at 3 o'clock.

:08:29. > :08:35.handbags the Ulster Harp customers wanting to be the first to snap up

:08:35. > :08:38.Jersey Royals can put their name on a waiting list at Selfridges. The

:08:38. > :08:43.crop is likely to be the earliest yet, the mild winter has brought

:08:43. > :08:47.them on early, as Rachel Royce reports. Cosseted through the

:08:47. > :08:52.winter, the first Jersey Royals could reach the shops in one week.

:08:52. > :08:59.It will be the earliest yet in the potatoes 130 year history and is a

:08:59. > :09:06.source of great excitement. crop is not really at a stage where

:09:06. > :09:10.you will see a lot of tubers, but the foliage itself is very mature,

:09:10. > :09:14.probably two weeks more. The Jersey Royals are hampered throughout

:09:14. > :09:20.their crowing lives, and plan the ban hand-picked, they are able to

:09:20. > :09:28.soak up the sun on the south-facing slopes. -- and planted and hand-

:09:28. > :09:31.picked. But a waiting list at Selfridges? Can they be serious?

:09:31. > :09:35.have never come across it before. I have never heard of it for

:09:35. > :09:40.vegetables. We have seen it with other things, but the Jersey Royal

:09:40. > :09:44.is so sought after in the UK, and we are building on that excitement,

:09:44. > :09:48.giving us an opportunity, and we are spreading the word that they

:09:48. > :09:52.are soon to arrive in the UK. Jersey Royals are the island's

:09:52. > :09:55.biggest crop exports worth 30 million a year. The early start to

:09:55. > :10:02.the season has given growers a bus, but the chances of a repeat

:10:02. > :10:07.performance next year are as predictable as the weather.

:10:07. > :10:14.Well, it was a mild winter, wasn't it? Let's find out what is in store.

:10:14. > :10:18.Good evening. Still very cold across the Channel Islands tonight,

:10:18. > :10:22.but a change through the day tomorrow as mild air finally begins

:10:22. > :10:25.to reappear. It will bring rain as well, and perhaps briefly a little

:10:25. > :10:30.sleet coming in ahead of that band of rain later in the day tomorrow.

:10:30. > :10:33.What we have at the moment is high pressure, a cold night to come,

:10:33. > :10:37.then two weather systems from the north-west will slowly make

:10:37. > :10:40.progress towards us. Not really a riding until much later in the day,

:10:40. > :10:45.but it will cloud over and we will start to see sleet and rain turning

:10:45. > :10:49.up towards the end of the afternoon. By the time we get into Sunday, we

:10:49. > :10:52.are between two weather systems, slightly less cold air, and we will

:10:52. > :10:57.see brighter weather on Sunday before patchy rain returns on

:10:57. > :11:00.Monday. Tonight, like the last couple of nights, a widespread

:11:00. > :11:05.overnight frost, winds from the north-east at temperatures down to

:11:05. > :11:08.zero. Tomorrow, some brightness in the morning at least, but clouding

:11:08. > :11:12.over through the day, and by the afternoon we will start to see some

:11:12. > :11:17.patchy light rain or sleet at the from me northwest. A slow process

:11:17. > :11:21.as that arrives, temperatures recovering to four, maybe five

:11:21. > :11:26.degrees to end the day. On to the coastal waters forecast, the winds

:11:26. > :11:31.of Variable becoming southeasterly, four, increasing five, fine but

:11:31. > :11:38.patchy rain later, visibility mainly good. The times of high

:11:38. > :11:45.water at St Helier. Not much of the servers, maybe two feet and clean

:11:45. > :11:49.or flat for the most of our beaches. As we move into Sunday, bright and

:11:49. > :11:54.dry, some sunny spells. It is slightly warmer, Six degrees, we

:11:54. > :11:58.lose that really dry cold air from the east. A breeze from the north,

:11:58. > :12:03.on Monday third outbreaks of patchy rain arriving, six or seven degrees

:12:03. > :12:13.is the top temperature. -- her that outbreaks. Tuesday, starting to get

:12:13. > :12:15.

:12:15. > :12:18.Finally, organisers of a new folklore festival in Jersey have

:12:18. > :12:23.confirmed Joan Armatrading will perform at the event. The festival

:12:23. > :12:26.is being launched by the team behind the Jersey life Bestival and

:12:26. > :12:30.will feature a mix of performances. Joan Armatrading is a three-time
