:00:11. > :00:18.Good evening. The top story tonight. A crumbling quay means disruption
:00:18. > :00:23.for thousands of Condor Ferries passengers. Plus a heaving safe
:00:23. > :00:33.haven. The refuge struggling to cope with a surge in demand. And
:00:33. > :00:36.the sights that won Guernsey a major Hollywood movie.
:00:36. > :00:41.Condor Ferries is moving all its sailings from Weymouth to Poole
:00:41. > :00:44.because of serious safety concerns about the port. The company, which
:00:44. > :00:50.sails to the Channel Islands, says there are problems with the
:00:51. > :00:54.structural integrity of the ferry berth. I spoke to our reporter Paul
:00:54. > :01:02.Clifton a short while ago about what it means for the business and
:01:03. > :01:07.the passengers. For passengers it is disruptive. The company is
:01:07. > :01:11.contacting passengers booked on future sailings from Weymouth to
:01:11. > :01:18.the Channel Islands and telling them the port will move and they
:01:18. > :01:25.are to go to Poole instead. That is a longer journey. The timetable
:01:25. > :01:29.will change, as well. It is a headache for Condor Ferries. It
:01:29. > :01:35.stores and refuelling of there and many of the 800 people who work for
:01:35. > :01:40.the company live in that area as well. Why is it happening?
:01:40. > :01:47.problem is serious. It is about the structural integrity of the ferry
:01:47. > :01:51.port. The Engineer is not certain it is safe. The local council said
:01:51. > :01:56.that divers have inspected the harbour wall and found cracks under
:01:56. > :02:00.the water line adjacent to where the vessel moors. The surface of
:02:00. > :02:05.the quay has dropped and cracks have appeared. There will be one
:02:05. > :02:11.more sailing on Friday and then it will be closed. We do not know how
:02:11. > :02:18.long for. It could be months. A lot of the Olympic sailing events are
:02:18. > :02:24.happening close to the port. It is urgent. For Poole, it will be an
:02:24. > :02:28.unexpected boost for facilities. They will welcome Condor Ferries
:02:28. > :02:30.with open arms. It has been open for less than a
:02:30. > :02:34.year, and already Jersey's Sanctuary House hostel is bursting
:02:34. > :02:38.at the seams. The refuge for men going through hard times was set up
:02:38. > :02:41.in a former bed and breakfast in St Aubin. Demand has been so high, it
:02:41. > :02:44.has had to almost double its accommodation by taking rooms in
:02:44. > :02:52.another guest house in the village. It now gets up to 20 new enquiries
:02:52. > :02:57.a week and has a waiting list. Rachel Royce reports.
:02:57. > :03:02.The kitchen is where residents will come and go, after meeting for a
:03:02. > :03:08.chat. The social life was one aspect that helped this taxi driver
:03:08. > :03:14.get back on his feet. I had a slight break down and was not pay
:03:14. > :03:22.my bills in time. I lost my apartment and has nowhere to go.
:03:22. > :03:26.There was nowhere for somebody in that position in Jersey. It offers
:03:26. > :03:34.comfortable rooms, but last night somebody in need spent the night on
:03:34. > :03:38.a sofa. We have taken between five and seven rooms in one and
:03:38. > :03:44.negotiating another eight rooms in this area for the beginning of
:03:44. > :03:49.March. The problem is we have a continuing influx from different
:03:50. > :03:55.agencies, from ministries, social services and from the prison, and
:03:55. > :03:59.from the church and from every aspect of the community. We are
:03:59. > :04:05.having to deal with three a day which we do not have the
:04:05. > :04:10.accommodation. When it first opened, it faced an lot of local opposition
:04:10. > :04:15.with people concerned there might be undesirable staying, perhaps
:04:15. > :04:20.with drug and alcohol problems. But since it has opened its doors, the
:04:20. > :04:24.community has rallied around. truly has turned around. When you
:04:24. > :04:31.telephone the to say you were coming, I did ask and they shrugged
:04:31. > :04:38.their shoulders to say it is OK. It is a good news story. How do people
:04:38. > :04:43.feel now? They feel that Colin has identified a need and these men
:04:43. > :04:50.need help and there is a section of society that previously was missed
:04:50. > :04:55.out. And they are doing a fantastic job. One seat in the lounge is
:04:55. > :05:00.reserved for Kevin. A mannequin of a real-life Kevin who committed
:05:00. > :05:10.suicide just before the refuge opened its doors. The stress of
:05:10. > :05:12.homelessness was a burden too far. Staff at one of the island's
:05:13. > :05:17.biggest internet companies have been told they could lose their
:05:17. > :05:22.jobs. Employees at Indigo Starfish have been told they might be made
:05:22. > :05:27.redundant. The UK government plans to scrap tax relief from goods sold
:05:27. > :05:30.from the islands. No legal challenge has been mounted.
:05:30. > :05:33.More than 7,000 people need to register on Guernsey's electoral
:05:33. > :05:35.roll for the Home Department to meet its target. The Election 2012
:05:35. > :05:45.team was hoping for 35,000 islanders to be registered by the
:05:45. > :05:52.
:05:52. > :05:59.29th February. But so far only 27,452 people have signed up.
:05:59. > :06:02.They have been part of the Battle of Flowers parade for four decades.
:06:02. > :06:06.The Jersey Young Farmers' Club. But they are pulling out of the event
:06:06. > :06:10.because of money problems. Bosses say they are disappointed with the
:06:10. > :06:13.decision. Behind me is the headquarters for
:06:13. > :06:19.the Young Farmers' Club. Somewhat quiet today. Perhaps a sign of
:06:19. > :06:24.things to come. For this year's Battle of Flowers, the club will
:06:24. > :06:30.not be taking part. That is because of a lack of money. Nobody from the
:06:30. > :06:36.club wanted to appear on camera. If in a statement, their chairman said
:06:36. > :06:46.they were bitterly disappointed to make the decision, especially as it
:06:46. > :06:48.
:06:48. > :06:53.The Young Farmers' Club says that income has dropped significantly in
:06:53. > :07:03.the past 18 months and said they had subsidise the cost of the float
:07:03. > :07:06.
:07:06. > :07:14.The club said they would spend the next 12 months raising awareness of
:07:14. > :07:16.what they do and also to raise cash so they can return next year. The
:07:16. > :07:22.Association for the Battle of Flowers said they would be
:07:22. > :07:26.disappointed they will not take part in this year's parade.
:07:26. > :07:30.Guernsey is still waiting to hear when a Hollywood blockbuster
:07:30. > :07:34.directed by this person will be filmed in the island. Big hitters
:07:34. > :07:40.from the movie have secretly visited. They were shown around by
:07:40. > :07:45.a very proud Guernsey woman. We met up with her and found out where she
:07:46. > :07:51.took the likes of Kenneth Branagh. You are one of the top guides in
:07:51. > :07:56.Guernsey. We are approaching a familiar sight. Castle Cornet. You
:07:56. > :08:03.had some Hollywood royalty to visit. Kenneth Branagh, the producer of
:08:03. > :08:12.the Harry Potter movies, what did they make of it? Really impressed.
:08:12. > :08:16.I think it is a gorgeous entry into Guernsey. And it is featured in the
:08:16. > :08:22.book. Juliet arrives and this is what they see. They loved Castle
:08:22. > :08:27.Cornet. Because it is a huge antique building, there is no way
:08:27. > :08:34.you can make a set to look as good as the real thing. For you, were
:08:34. > :08:38.used star-struck? I was. I have to have a secret smile to myself.
:08:38. > :08:46.Thinking I am driving a car and next door to me is Kenneth Branagh.
:08:46. > :08:53.They were lovely. They were really professional. They concentrated on
:08:53. > :09:02.what they had to do. Lovely people to talk to. They were not...
:09:02. > :09:12.egos! No. Really good. Were there other areas he went to? Yes. Shall
:09:12. > :09:12.
:09:12. > :09:19.we look at some of them? Absolutely. We can go down this path. That is
:09:19. > :09:25.an incredible view. It is fabulous. They wanted lots and lots of views
:09:25. > :09:32.of the cliffs and the south coast. I came to as many head lands as I
:09:32. > :09:37.could. This is a contrast to Castle Cornet. That is right. With the old
:09:37. > :09:44.buildings. And these magnificent natural views of the clips.
:09:44. > :09:51.Spectacular. Surely that view needs to be filmed. When will they start?
:09:51. > :09:54.I wish I knew. Let's hope it is not too long. Fingers crossed. And if
:09:54. > :09:57.Mike thinks he is going to interview the stars of the film, he
:09:57. > :10:02.interview the stars of the film, he might have to fight for it to! Now
:10:02. > :10:09.the weather. Good evening. Some quiet weather
:10:09. > :10:15.tonight and tomorrow. The winds drop and there will be a fair cup
:10:15. > :10:21.of cloud. Temperatures back up to nine degrees tomorrow afternoon.
:10:21. > :10:26.The cloud will hold the temperatures up. The weather front
:10:26. > :10:31.is weakening over the next few days. By Friday, it will allow this
:10:31. > :10:36.weather front travelling through central Britain to head towards the
:10:36. > :10:43.Channel Islands Friday night to Saturday. Until then, a lot of dry
:10:43. > :10:48.weather. There will be good visibility overnight. Tomorrow,
:10:48. > :10:55.cloudy, but it should break up and in the afternoon, sunshine
:10:55. > :11:00.developing. Temperatures up to nine degrees. It will not be as windy.
:11:00. > :11:05.The winds will be north-westerly and they will be moderate to
:11:05. > :11:15.decreasing light by the late afternoon. On to the marine
:11:15. > :11:21.
:11:22. > :11:27.forecast. And the times of high water. The onshore breeze will make
:11:27. > :11:33.the surf messy on the north coast. Up to three feet and choppy. The
:11:33. > :11:37.outlook, there will be a change as we move into the weekend with wet
:11:38. > :11:45.weather. Saturday is generally cloudy and breezy with outbreaks of
:11:45. > :11:49.rain. On Saturday night in two Sunday, there will be a big drop in
