:00:14. > :00:19.Good evening. The headlines. Jailed for Will

:00:19. > :00:26.Genia is - the drugs careers built using a child to smuggle heroin

:00:26. > :00:32.into Guernsey. And the Green team, signing up to investigate the

:00:32. > :00:42.future of tidal power. And this man was paralysed, now he

:00:42. > :00:43.

:00:43. > :00:46.hopes to inspire others right here in the Channel Islands.

:00:46. > :00:51.Children are increasingly being used to try and smuggle drugs into

:00:51. > :00:53.Guernsey. That's the warning from the island's customs service. Two

:00:54. > :00:58.people from Weymouth have just been sent to prison for importing heroin

:00:58. > :01:01.worth up to 20,000 into the island. 31-year-old David Shields was

:01:01. > :01:07.sentenced to eight and a half years, and 24-year-old Emma Pring to six

:01:07. > :01:11.years. They were travelling with a three year-old. Mike Wilkins

:01:11. > :01:14.reports. The look of a man who knows the

:01:14. > :01:18.game's up. David Shields comes from Weymouth, but he's been to Guernsey

:01:18. > :01:24.before. He visited five years ago, but was convicted of importing

:01:24. > :01:28.crack cocaine and ecstasy. And in the summer he tried to smuggle in

:01:28. > :01:32.drugs again. In July he took the ferry with Emma Pring and when they

:01:32. > :01:36.got here, disembarked separately. It was then that Guernsey Border

:01:36. > :01:38.Agency officers swooped. Shields was detained and taken to

:01:38. > :01:47.the Princess Elizabeth Hospital where he was found to have

:01:47. > :01:50.internally concealed heroin and diazepam. Pring was travelling with

:01:50. > :01:56.a three year-old child and removed a package of heroin from her jeans

:01:56. > :02:01.after becoming concerned about the child's welfare.

:02:01. > :02:07.We have had a few instances in the past year has sold would couriers

:02:07. > :02:15.using the cover of a young child which is disturbing. It shows the

:02:15. > :02:18.lengths that people will go to. That coupled with internal

:02:18. > :02:23.concealment show her devious people can be but it shows that the

:02:23. > :02:29.officers of the 18 seats are up to these kind of methods. -- the

:02:29. > :02:31.agency. We don't know much about their

:02:31. > :02:35.backgrounds. But for Shields, his attempt to import drugs a second

:02:35. > :02:37.time has put him behind bars for the best part of a decade.

:02:38. > :02:40.Could a new pan-island deal help speed up the development of tidal

:02:40. > :02:43.power in the Channel Islands? Guernsey, Jersey and Sark have

:02:43. > :02:45.signed up to a new deal to work more closely together. But the

:02:45. > :02:51.formal agreement was a step too far for Alderney. Penny Elderfield

:02:51. > :02:57.reports. It's a powerful resource. And one

:02:57. > :03:00.that isn't in short supply. But whilst the authorities here in

:03:00. > :03:04.Guernsey want to make the most of the seas around us, we're not the

:03:04. > :03:06.only Channel Island looking to do it. Which is why Jersey, Guernsey

:03:06. > :03:16.and Sark's government have joined forces to explore the options for

:03:16. > :03:20.

:03:20. > :03:24.tidal power. There has been a number of individual approaches but

:03:24. > :03:27.the question keeps being trotted out, why aren't you not working

:03:27. > :03:30.together? And that's what will now happen. To

:03:30. > :03:38.look at the various technologies out there. But also to get on with

:03:38. > :03:43.all the ground work that needs doing. We need to meet regularly to

:03:43. > :03:50.get up to date with what is happening with the resignation --

:03:50. > :03:56.with legislation and developments. I think the experience we will gain

:03:56. > :04:04.from sharing the information with each jurisdiction means that we can

:04:04. > :04:06.well forward with a bit more speed than each acting in its own way.

:04:06. > :04:08.But there's an island missing from the mix - Alderney. And although

:04:08. > :04:16.they will be included in the ongoing talks, the government

:04:16. > :04:24.doesn't want to sign up formally. We are all at different stages of

:04:24. > :04:27.development and the product that will eventually arrive in each

:04:27. > :04:30.jurisdiction will probably be different.

:04:30. > :04:33.There's still years to go before the Islands will even come close to

:04:33. > :04:39.seeing tidal power generated. But it's hoped by joining forces it

:04:39. > :04:42.will not only save time, but money. The boss of bus operator, Connex,

:04:42. > :04:47.has spoken out about the decision to give a rival operator the

:04:47. > :04:50.opportunity to run Jersey's bus services. Connex has been running

:04:50. > :04:52.the buses on the island for ten years, but the states have now said

:04:52. > :04:57.UK bus operator, CT Plus, is the preferred choice when the contract

:04:58. > :05:06.finishes at the end of the year. Connex say they were surprised to

:05:06. > :05:14.be excluded this early in the process.

:05:14. > :05:20.And we worked in the process but what is surprising is at that stage

:05:20. > :05:27.of the competition, they have not kept more than one contender. We

:05:27. > :05:30.were expecting to were three containers to reach the final stage.

:05:30. > :05:33.-- contenders. Jersey's Fish Festival has been

:05:33. > :05:36.cancelled this year. It's a celebration of the island's fishing

:05:36. > :05:37.industry and local seafood, with food stalls, live music and a "man-

:05:37. > :05:47.powered flight" competition. The event at Victoria Pier attracted

:05:47. > :05:49.

:05:49. > :05:51.about 13,000 people in 2011. Plans to build a new cinema complex

:05:52. > :05:54.in Guernsey must take into account the traffic problems already in the

:05:54. > :05:55.area. The proposals for Admiral Park, which also include flats and

:05:55. > :05:59.offices, are currently being considered by the Environment

:05:59. > :06:01.Department. One long term critic of traffic management in the area says

:06:01. > :06:10.whilst he's supportive of more development, the issue does need to

:06:10. > :06:20.be addressed. We are looking to add hundreds of new people working in

:06:20. > :06:26.the area, they will all have a traffic impact. We need to consider

:06:26. > :06:36.that as part of the overall picture. You tend to do tings in isolation

:06:36. > :06:36.

:06:36. > :06:42.and then you end up with a road traffic system that does not work.

:06:42. > :06:47.Coming up, we have the South Devon man battered and bruised after

:06:48. > :06:49.wrestling a monster fish. A former serviceman who was told he

:06:49. > :06:54.was unlikely to walk again is bringing his inspirational

:06:54. > :06:59.challenge to the Channel Islands this weekend. Phil Packer suffered

:06:59. > :07:06.severe spinal damage four years ago but has slowly learnt to walk again.

:07:06. > :07:08.Now he's set off on a mission to walk 2,012 by the end of 2012. Some

:07:08. > :07:11.of those miles will be walked in our islands - and Jersey's

:07:11. > :07:19.Lieutenant Governor will be joining him. He started his challenge in

:07:19. > :07:23.the UK last month, as Beckie Williams reports.

:07:23. > :07:27.Phil Packer smiled through the drizzle as he started to walk. He

:07:27. > :07:29.uses a stick as his injuries haven't properly healed. Phil's

:07:29. > :07:32.doing this to raise money for a centre in West Sussex that will

:07:32. > :07:40.help children who have to overcome adversity, something Phil had to do

:07:40. > :07:45.when he was told he might not walk again.

:07:45. > :07:50.I lost my self-belief and my self- esteem overnight and it took me a

:07:50. > :07:54.long time to get that back. When I did it was being inspired by other

:07:54. > :07:57.people, because they believed in me. Phil Packer is used to challenging

:07:57. > :08:00.himself. He climbed El Capitan, a mountain peak in California, for

:08:00. > :08:09.charity and completed the London marathon on crutches. Over the next

:08:09. > :08:19.300 days, famous faces will be joining him on the walk.

:08:19. > :08:23.He is an enormous inspiration to everybody so it is fantastic that

:08:23. > :08:31.this centre of excellence can be achieved. His aim is to raise a lot

:08:31. > :08:35.of money this year. He is going to walk 2012 miles which is a long way,

:08:35. > :08:41.I hold him in such high regard. Phil's walking in Alderney tomorrow,

:08:41. > :08:47.Guernsey on Saturday and Jersey on Sunday. It is a wonderful thing to

:08:47. > :08:57.do to try to give disadvantaged young people an opportunity and I

:08:57. > :08:57.

:08:57. > :09:01.encouraged the community to get behind him. I will be with him. I

:09:01. > :09:08.encourage everyone just to go with him for a short distance to show

:09:08. > :09:11.support for a stock -- show support. So get your walking boots at the

:09:11. > :09:13.ready, because anyone's welcome to join in. And to find out more about

:09:13. > :09:18.where and when Phil's walking, tune into BBC Radio Jersey tomorrow

:09:18. > :09:25.morning. Phil's speaking to Chris morning. Phil's speaking to Chris

:09:25. > :09:29.Stone live at about ten to eight. The cloudy and quiet weather

:09:29. > :09:37.continues overnight. There is a change on the way but it is quite

:09:38. > :09:43.slow. There is a weather front slowly making its way down the UK

:09:43. > :09:52.but still far enough not to close too much concern. And by Saturday

:09:52. > :09:55.morning, still at looking OK but rain coming later in the day. For

:09:55. > :10:02.tonight there is still a lot of cloud around keeping things quite

:10:02. > :10:09.mild overnight. Temperatures are no lower than six or seven degrees

:10:09. > :10:16.overnight. So of cloudy start once again tomorrow. The chance of a

:10:16. > :10:23.shower throughout the day but still a good deal of dry weather.

:10:23. > :10:31.Temperatures around nine degrees at their highest tomorrow afternoon.

:10:31. > :10:41.The inshore waters forecast, the risk of a shower out at sea. And

:10:41. > :10:58.

:10:58. > :11:03.For the rest of the week, another a cloudy day tomorrow. Saturday

:11:03. > :11:10.afternoon sees that rain approaching common turning quite

:11:10. > :11:14.wet and windy for a time. On Sunday the winter becomes more clearly so

:11:14. > :11:22.it actually will feel cooler by the it actually will feel cooler by the

:11:22. > :11:24.A Jersey drummer has been selected from thousands to perform in the

:11:25. > :11:34.London Olympics opening ceremony, but his usual style isn't actually

:11:35. > :11:36.

:11:36. > :11:41.what you'd expect for the event. Tom Ashcroft Nowicki plays in

:11:42. > :11:45.Jersey band, Salem's Lot. Here they are in action. He responded to an

:11:45. > :11:48.advert for performers posted on the notice board at his music college.

:11:48. > :11:55.He said he was "dumbfounded" when he found out he'd got the gig. But

:11:55. > :12:05.he's not allowed to tell us much about it.

:12:05. > :12:06.
