:00:08. > :00:14.Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Coming up...

:00:14. > :00:20.The biggest drugs raid of the year, as Jersey customs break up a UK

:00:20. > :00:24.smuggling ring worth millions. How to deal with disruptive

:00:24. > :00:28.students - Guernsey States goes back to school.

:00:28. > :00:38.I am at Jersey airport as it celebrates its 75th birthday. We

:00:38. > :00:41.

:00:41. > :00:46.are looking behind the scenes and speaking to people who work here.

:00:46. > :00:50.It is the biggest drugs arrest Jersey customs has made this year.

:00:50. > :00:54.This week, two men were arrested in the island following an

:00:54. > :00:58.investigation into suspected drug trafficking. It was co-ordinated

:00:58. > :01:03.with police officers in Staffordshire. Three people were

:01:03. > :01:07.also arrested in Burton-on-Trent. 31-year-old Lee and Norris from St

:01:07. > :01:17.Saviour and 22-year-old Benjamin Bishop from Northallerton have been

:01:17. > :01:23.charged with possession. -- lien Norris. The two men were arrested

:01:23. > :01:28.after customs officers seized class B drugs and a large amount of cash.

:01:28. > :01:32.Jersey received small amounts of cannabis resin and large amounts of

:01:32. > :01:38.cash, tens of thousands of pounds worth. We will be looking at the

:01:38. > :01:42.money trails. The raid was a combined operation

:01:42. > :01:46.with police officers in a Staffordshire. Cannabis with a

:01:46. > :01:51.street value of 1 million was seized in Burton-on-Trent. Three

:01:51. > :01:57.people have been arrested there book released on bail. -- but

:01:57. > :02:04.released. We are happy that we have disrupted

:02:04. > :02:09.and may be completely stopped and organised drug syndicate that was

:02:09. > :02:15.trafficking into Jersey on a large scale. We are very pleased to work

:02:15. > :02:20.in partnership with other agencies and we will do that wherever

:02:20. > :02:23.possible. This is the largest drug arrest in

:02:23. > :02:33.Jersey so far this year. Both men arrested have been remanded in

:02:33. > :02:36.custody until 5th April, when they will appear in the Royal Court.

:02:36. > :02:40.Tackling disruptive behaviour in the classroom and reducing the

:02:40. > :02:44.number of exclusions in Guernsey schools was one of the issues

:02:44. > :02:52.dominating a debate in the States today. Deputies agreed on an action

:02:52. > :02:56.plan for tackling the problem. Studying hard. The scene you would

:02:56. > :03:01.expect to see in classrooms around Guernsey. But sometimes disruptive

:03:01. > :03:04.pupils can cause problems and that is a problem common to a lot of the

:03:04. > :03:09.island's schools, but one that apparently could be dealt with in a

:03:09. > :03:13.better way. As we look more deeply into what we realise how immense

:03:13. > :03:18.the problems were. There needs to be much more support for teachers

:03:18. > :03:22.and schools because you only need one disruptive person in the class

:03:22. > :03:26.for it to be very difficult for the class to deal with. Today the

:03:26. > :03:29.States approved a range of recommendations to help pave the

:03:30. > :03:34.way for the Education Department to improve the situation. More support

:03:34. > :03:39.was top of the list for some former teachers turned politicians who

:03:39. > :03:43.feel that exclusion need to be the last resort. It is a slippery slope

:03:43. > :03:49.that you want to avoid. The best way forward is to exclude children

:03:49. > :03:53.from the classroom if they are disruptive but not from school,

:03:54. > :03:58.provide additional support and slowly deal with their needs and

:03:58. > :04:03.get them back on track. It is something the Education Department

:04:03. > :04:09.says is key to tackle early on so a review of the primary sector could

:04:09. > :04:14.hold important answers. We must start addressing these issues

:04:14. > :04:19.increase school. We all have our report at the end of this month but

:04:19. > :04:24.we have to keep going forward with this. Whoever is in charge, I hope

:04:24. > :04:28.they will pick this and deliver it. The election will mean changes in

:04:28. > :04:35.the States but those committed to improving the island's schools will

:04:35. > :04:37.be hoping it does not delay the urgent changes which need to be

:04:37. > :04:42.made. A 47-year-old man from the UK has

:04:42. > :04:47.been jailed for three years for a spate of break-ins in Jersey. Carl

:04:47. > :04:56.Murphy was found guilty of three counts of burglary, one of breaking

:04:56. > :05:02.and entering and a drugs charge. Motorcyclists are being told to

:05:02. > :05:06.keep off Guernsey's cliff paths. Cyclists are also reminded that

:05:06. > :05:11.they are breaking the law if they ride on south coast cliff paths.

:05:11. > :05:15.Fewer than 4 % of people in Jersey use the bus to get to work

:05:15. > :05:20.according to the latest census results. Figures show that more

:05:20. > :05:23.than half of working adults use a private car and one quarter walk. 4

:05:23. > :05:28.% cycle. Guernsey Police says that when you

:05:28. > :05:33.are armoured Land-Rover is essential. More than 100 people

:05:33. > :05:36.have left comments on BBC Guernsey's Facebook page, most of

:05:36. > :05:40.them critical of the decision to purchase the vehicle, which cost

:05:41. > :05:45.just over 180,000. Guernsey Police that if Chris McManus and Franco

:05:45. > :05:55.Lamolinara was a serious incident it could take hours for one to

:05:55. > :05:55.

:05:55. > :06:04.arrive from the UK. -- if there was a serious incident.

:06:04. > :06:09.A Jersey environmentalist has questioned why Jersey can't match

:06:09. > :06:18.UK tournaments to renewable power. At Wadebridge has introduced wind-

:06:18. > :06:22.power and solar power is. -- solar panels. Mark slipped -- mark lives

:06:22. > :06:27.in St Ouen and has taken steps to make his home more environmentally

:06:27. > :06:36.friendly. There are a couple of boreholes

:06:36. > :06:44.over there. That comes into the system here. There are two pipes,

:06:44. > :06:49.one going in and one coming out. That takes the water into the house.

:06:49. > :06:53.He feels we should be following in Wadebridge's footsteps to generate

:06:53. > :07:03.our own electricity. We could go a lot further in the longer term

:07:03. > :07:03.

:07:03. > :07:08.because we have rain options. Wave energy is a possibility as well. We

:07:08. > :07:12.have other restrictions, a limited amount of land to use. But

:07:12. > :07:17.companies in Jersey are already tried to do things like this.

:07:17. > :07:25.Jersey able to rival the Cornish town and produce its own

:07:25. > :07:29.electricity island wired to? -- island wide. Mark hopes that one

:07:29. > :07:36.day, with the help of the States, weekend you -- make more use of

:07:36. > :07:46.what is around us to power our homes.

:07:46. > :07:47.

:07:47. > :07:57.Good news for Guernsey's Christine Ambulance and Rescue force. --

:07:57. > :07:58.

:07:58. > :08:01.Flying Christine. They will take part in the Queen's diamond jubilee

:08:01. > :08:04.flotilla. The new chief executive of the

:08:04. > :08:11.Jersey Football Association has been named as David Brookland. He

:08:11. > :08:15.has been a board member for six years, mainly as treasurer. He

:08:15. > :08:22.takes over from Paul Creeden en made when he leaves to take on a

:08:22. > :08:26.role at Wembley with the English FA. It is our gateway to the outside

:08:26. > :08:30.world and today Jersey Airport celebrates its 75th birthday. It is

:08:30. > :08:40.used by thousands every day and staffed by hundreds of people, each

:08:40. > :08:45.

:08:45. > :08:50.with a different story to tell. Edward Sault spend a day there.

:08:51. > :08:55.It was that building behind me that was opened on 10th March 1937 and

:08:55. > :09:00.everything has changed somewhat, as you may expect, since then, as I

:09:00. > :09:04.have been finding out. This was how you used to get

:09:04. > :09:08.through -- to and from Jersey, landing and taking off from the

:09:08. > :09:13.beach at West Park but it was decided a proper aerodrome was

:09:13. > :09:19.needed and on 10th March 1937 Jersey Airport was born and opened

:09:19. > :09:24.by the then bailiff. The planes that operated off the

:09:24. > :09:29.beach were small, with eight seats. The weight category would have been

:09:29. > :09:33.three or four times. But flying here stopped during the war years

:09:33. > :09:38.as German troops took over the airport. Nigel Vibert is a keen

:09:38. > :09:42.aviation enthusiast. He has volumes of photos of the airport and

:09:42. > :09:47.aeroplanes taken over the years. lived down the road and so in the

:09:47. > :09:53.Sixties I started coming on a bike, regardless of whether. My father

:09:53. > :10:00.walked for British European airports for a time, so whether

:10:00. > :10:06.that started it off I don't know. After liberation, a positive future

:10:06. > :10:12.beckoned. In its heyday, hundreds and hundreds of holidaymakers --

:10:12. > :10:16.honeymoon has from the UK came to the island's.

:10:16. > :10:24.To any has worked at the airport for 40 years, first with the

:10:24. > :10:30.airline British Midland and now on the information desk. -- Jenny has.

:10:30. > :10:35.We have had strange things, people leaving false teeth in seat pockets,

:10:36. > :10:42.and man losing his wedding ring down the aircraft loo. -- and man.

:10:42. > :10:48.Things that you can have a smile about afterwards. Sid Watling says

:10:48. > :10:53.that things have changed over the years. In my eyes, a great deal,

:10:53. > :10:56.because all of the rules and regulations, health and safety,

:10:56. > :11:02.obviously they had to come in, but we had a lot more freedom in those

:11:02. > :11:08.days. Doug Bannister is the new man in charge. He says that Jersey

:11:08. > :11:12.Airport can build on its past. the next seven decades I think we

:11:12. > :11:17.will see the airport continue to serve the community. We would like

:11:17. > :11:20.to open up and expand our product offerings and make it a much more

:11:20. > :11:25.important community. It will be business as usual this weekend,

:11:25. > :11:29.with flights landing and taking off to various destinations, but what

:11:29. > :11:35.is clear is that it is a valued resource and one that we would be

:11:35. > :11:45.lost without. Happy birthday, Jersey Airport. You

:11:47. > :11:54.had best check whether it will be A quiet week across the Channel

:11:54. > :12:00.Islands as far as the weather is concerned. Sunday is probably be

:12:00. > :12:05.better of the two days. The high pressure is to the south of us, it

:12:05. > :12:11.moves north over the next few hours to lie off the north-west coast of

:12:11. > :12:17.France. It does not move very far by midday on Sunday. A change in

:12:17. > :12:22.the wind direction, easterly winds by Sunday to Monday. Tonight the

:12:22. > :12:26.cloud is quite extensive, the winds light and mainly from the West.

:12:30. > :12:36.Tomorrow, a lot of cloud and some early mist. That should clear and
