:00:08. > :00:13.Good evening and welcome to the BBC in the Channel Islands. The top

:00:13. > :00:16.stories: Another all time high for those out of work in Jersey - we

:00:16. > :00:17.ask the Chief Minister what he's going to do to stop unemployment

:00:17. > :00:23.rising. Plus, one of Guernsey's biggest

:00:23. > :00:26.online retailers moves off island with the loss of nearly fifty jobs.

:00:26. > :00:36.But a successful weekend for sport as Guernsey FC and our rugby teams

:00:36. > :00:44.

:00:44. > :00:47.It's been a bad day for jobs in the Channel Islands. 46 jobs are to go

:00:47. > :00:50.at HMV in Guernsey as the firm closes its internet shopping

:00:50. > :00:53.business. In Jersey, the latest unemployment figures revealed that

:00:53. > :01:00.120 more people were registered as out of work in February, that's

:01:00. > :01:03.another record high. I'll be talking to HMV in a moment but

:01:03. > :01:13.first here's Rachel Royce who's been looking into whether more jobs

:01:13. > :01:13.

:01:14. > :01:19.in Jersey could be kept for locals. The rain runs a restaurants in King

:01:19. > :01:26.Street. She has tried to employ people locally but employers are

:01:26. > :01:29.Scottish and Romanian chef and a Portuguese and Italian Wheater.

:01:29. > :01:39.advertised positions when available but we have little response from

:01:39. > :01:48.

:01:48. > :01:54.local people. We have had some but She says on the number of occasions

:01:54. > :01:59.being from Jersey has actively lead to employers not wanting her.

:01:59. > :02:04.want a part-time job, even mornings or afternoons, cleaning, anything

:02:04. > :02:12.and it is hard to find it. If I find one they asked if I am

:02:12. > :02:17.Portuguese, and I say no. I don't get the opportunity to go for the

:02:17. > :02:20.job. The unemployment figures are again the highest they've ever been.

:02:21. > :02:24.They are predicted to get worse following the decision in the High

:02:25. > :02:30.Court to abolish a low-value consignment relief affecting of the

:02:30. > :02:34.fulfilment industry. At the end of February there were 1820 people

:02:34. > :02:39.seeking work on the island with one in five long-term unemployed

:02:39. > :02:43.without work for more than a year. Can the state do more to keep

:02:44. > :02:49.Jersey jobs would Jersey people? The chief minister says he is doing

:02:49. > :02:53.all he can. The strategic plan of getting people back to work is

:02:54. > :02:59.based on the premise that we want people who were already here to be

:02:59. > :03:03.able to take jobs in the economy. Most people looking for a job of

:03:03. > :03:08.finding the times are hard weather moving to England will solve their

:03:08. > :03:13.problems remains to be seen. The couple in the 60s are considering

:03:13. > :03:16.living in a caravan until they find work.

:03:16. > :03:18.And in Guernsey dozens of jobs will be lost after the announcement

:03:19. > :03:22.another mail order company is closing its warehouse. The music

:03:22. > :03:26.retailer HMV is moving its operation back to the UK at the end

:03:26. > :03:31.July. A decision made because low value consignment relief will stop

:03:31. > :03:38.in April. Earlier today I spoke to their head of Press and PR for the

:03:38. > :03:42.company and asked if this had been an inevitable decision.

:03:43. > :03:47.Well, let me say we are very sorry we have made this decision, it is

:03:47. > :03:53.not taken lightly. We have had a productive relationship with state

:03:53. > :03:58.government in the Channel Islands and we have fantastic team. However,

:03:58. > :04:04.the lease is due to expire soon and we know there's been a decision

:04:04. > :04:09.recently about consignment relief which places pressure on online

:04:09. > :04:17.operations to reduce costs and the only way we could do that was to

:04:17. > :04:23.consolidate operations into one centre. What about the staff in

:04:23. > :04:27.Guernsey? Will you help them? have a great team there, 46 people

:04:27. > :04:31.full and part-time. We met with them on Friday and it have been

:04:31. > :04:37.used as well as they could. I think they understood the motives behind

:04:37. > :04:41.the decision but we know it is a shock and surprise when you hear

:04:41. > :04:46.that news. There will be opportunities for them, possibly on

:04:46. > :04:50.the island but more likely if they want to move to Birmingham, we know

:04:50. > :04:55.that is not realistic for everyone but the opportunities are there and

:04:55. > :05:01.we are working with him to see what they would like to do. Briefly,

:05:01. > :05:05.what about the shops in Guernsey and Jersey, will they remain open?

:05:05. > :05:09.The stores in Jersey and Guernsey are popular and will be continuing

:05:09. > :05:13.and we would do our best to cater to the public's demand on both

:05:13. > :05:16.islands. Thank you very much. A Guernseyman has died in a hang

:05:16. > :05:19.gliding accident in Spain. James Berryman was training as a hang

:05:19. > :05:24.glider pilot in the Algodonales near Cadiz when he was fatally

:05:24. > :05:27.injured last Friday. He was 59. The new Les Beaucamps school will

:05:27. > :05:30.be opening at the start of the Autumn term. Delays to the thirty-

:05:30. > :05:34.seven million pound building project had pushed the move-in date

:05:34. > :05:37.back, but the builders have been able to make up lost time. It means

:05:37. > :05:44.pupils will be able to vacate the current site, and start the new

:05:44. > :05:50.school year with brand new facilities. The current school is,

:05:50. > :05:55.as we know, past its best. In terms of the building and the opportunity

:05:55. > :05:59.to be in the school and have more space and better recreational

:05:59. > :06:02.facilities, classrooms fit for purpose, it will make a huge

:06:02. > :06:06.difference to both students and staff.

:06:06. > :06:09.Mail and newspapers will arrive into Jersey later from next week.

:06:09. > :06:12.Jersey Airport will open at six in the morning instead of half five

:06:12. > :06:14.after the UK's National Publishers Association announced it will no

:06:14. > :06:19.longer contribute to the cost of opening the runway early. Some

:06:19. > :06:22.customers will receive their newspapers and mail slightly later.

:06:22. > :06:25.You're watching the BBC in the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight

:06:25. > :06:35.with Natalie and Victoria, trying to combat the challenges of adult

:06:35. > :06:36.

:06:36. > :06:39.illiteracy which affects one in six Guernsey FC has capped a remarkable

:06:39. > :06:44.first season by being crowned Champions of the Combined Counties

:06:44. > :06:52.Divison One. Mike Wilkins was at Footes Lane this weekend to witness

:06:53. > :07:00.history in the making. More than 2000 people made their

:07:00. > :07:08.way with great hopes that the Green Alliance could win the championship.

:07:08. > :07:12.They are a great team, a great team. We will win 4-1. People support

:07:12. > :07:17.sport hugely in Guernsey and have a team like we have now is amazing.

:07:17. > :07:22.That is why they are here today. is the culmination of this historic

:07:22. > :07:30.season for Guernsey. In 90 minutes we will know if they have done

:07:30. > :07:40.enough to become champions. And they made the perfect start. This

:07:40. > :07:45.

:07:45. > :07:51.They were not here to make up numbers, they wanted to spoil the

:07:51. > :07:57.party and it wasn't long before they equalised. The green lion's

:07:57. > :08:07.den Ginnette during a nervous first half to take the lead. Guernsey

:08:07. > :08:11.

:08:12. > :08:18.Ideal conditions. They are playing good football, competitive and we

:08:18. > :08:23.can't complain. Let's hope he keeps the lead. They did just that by

:08:23. > :08:33.forcing them into a series of sloppy defensive errors. The green

:08:33. > :09:02.

:09:02. > :09:08.lines were happy to pounds. The By the time the referee blew the

:09:08. > :09:17.final whistle, Guernsey seven, but front one. They were League

:09:17. > :09:23.Water season! Anyone who thinks this was easy hasn't got a clue.

:09:23. > :09:32.It's been hard work. So many games of football. I never thought we

:09:32. > :09:36.would cope. We take tea deserve to do it. -- totally deserved to do it.

:09:36. > :09:41.We have been waiting for competitive competition week in,

:09:41. > :09:46.week out. Our family are watching, our friends will be watching. There

:09:46. > :09:51.is no better place for us to play football. If it wasn't for the fans,

:09:52. > :09:58.we wouldn't be here. How were the finances looking at plans for the

:09:58. > :10:03.future? The finances are looking OK. We are ahead in certain areas, we

:10:03. > :10:08.have been behind in some areas as well. But we have learnt a lot

:10:08. > :10:14.during the season. Guernsey still have a few games to play including

:10:14. > :10:24.an important cup match but for now, job done as their unforgettable

:10:24. > :10:25.

:10:25. > :10:28.first season comes to a climax. And Guernsey's rugby players are one

:10:28. > :10:31.step closer to promotion. They beat Chichester on Saturday to remain

:10:31. > :10:34.two points clear at the top of London One South - with just three

:10:34. > :10:36.games left to play. Jersey meanwhile scored seven tries

:10:36. > :10:39.as they comprehensively beat Cambridge in National League One.

:10:39. > :10:42.They remain four points clear with four games remaining. Not such good

:10:42. > :10:45.news for Guernsey tennis player Heather Watson. She lost in the

:10:45. > :10:48.third round of the Miami Masters to world number one Victoria Azarenka.

:10:48. > :10:53.Watson had beaten the world number twenty five Lucie Safarova in the

:10:53. > :10:55.previous round. Now, lovely weather, let's find out

:10:55. > :11:00.Now, lovely weather, let's find out if it will continue.

:11:00. > :11:07.Good evening, the weekend warmth has given us some high temperatures

:11:07. > :11:13.and a new record high for the month of March. The previous record was

:11:13. > :11:17.1965 and on Saturday temperatures on Jersey went up to 21.2. It is

:11:17. > :11:22.higher than it has been for quite a few years. The warmth stays with us

:11:22. > :11:27.through the next four days. High pressure is there. More of a breeze

:11:27. > :11:32.which will drop temperatures by a couple of degrees. High pressure

:11:32. > :11:37.doesn't want to move far and it sticks with us. Fine and sunny a

:11:37. > :11:41.good summary of the one of. A brisk easterly breeze, overnight it will

:11:41. > :11:48.drop a bit but back tomorrow. Overnight temperatures in single

:11:48. > :11:54.figures. Tomorrow, a fine day with unbroken sunshine. The haze

:11:54. > :12:01.reducing visibility but it does not stop temperatures, 16 or 17 and a

:12:01. > :12:07.few places getting to 18 or 19. The coastal waters forecast has the

:12:07. > :12:17.easterly wind 3-4. Mainly fine with moderate and visibility. The times

:12:17. > :12:18.

:12:18. > :12:27.of high water: this is British Summer Time. Disappointing serve,

:12:27. > :12:34.the waves will be clean. It does remain find through till Friday,

:12:34. > :12:38.slightly more in the way of cloud on Friday, and also as we lose the

:12:38. > :12:42.easterly and gain more North in the wind, slightly cooler air of the

:12:42. > :12:49.English Channel. A drop in temperatures down to pleasant
