:00:15. > :00:17.Good evening. More jobs under threat - 10 per cent of jobs could

:00:17. > :00:23.go at Jersey Post as LVCR is scrapped. Also on tonight's

:00:23. > :00:26.programme - airport on alert. Emergency services are scrambled as

:00:26. > :00:30.an Aurigny Trislander makes an emergency landing in Alderney. And

:00:30. > :00:40.the new idea that's set to clamp down on alcohol and drug abuse in

:00:40. > :00:41.

:00:41. > :00:48.Guernsey. De it is a problem we will have to pick up later on if we

:00:48. > :00:51.do not deal with that early. Up to 10 per cent of staff at

:00:51. > :00:57.Jersey Post could lose their jobs as a result of the UK preventing

:00:58. > :01:01.Channel Islands companies selling goods tax free to the UK. The job

:01:01. > :01:04.losses follow redundancies already made at Guernsey Post. Both

:01:04. > :01:07.companies warn that they'll have to increase the price of stamps - not

:01:07. > :01:11.only to meet the price hike announced by the UK today - but

:01:11. > :01:17.also to make up for an anticipated loss of mail order business. Rachel

:01:17. > :01:19.Royce reports. Here at Jersey'ss sorting office in

:01:19. > :01:23.St Savior the afternoon post is arriving. This office handles

:01:23. > :01:27.100,000 items a day. But things could be a lot quieter very soon.

:01:27. > :01:31.Jersey Post estimates it will lose half its mail and up to half its

:01:31. > :01:36.profit if mail order business dries up as anticipated. 40 people

:01:36. > :01:44.currently work at Jersey Post handling that business. Their jobs

:01:44. > :01:51.are now under threat. We're still hopeful that some other customers

:01:51. > :01:55.will carry on trading in the island. If more than we expect leave the

:01:55. > :02:00.next thing would be that they would try to redeploy staff elsewhere in

:02:00. > :02:03.the business. Both Guernsey and Jersey are considering an increase

:02:03. > :02:07.in the price of stamps as one way of coping with the change in their

:02:07. > :02:11.business. We have produced a cost in preparation for eventualities

:02:11. > :02:15.such as this over the last couple of years. At the end of this but we

:02:15. > :02:25.will move to a five did love the week which will save money. Cost is

:02:25. > :02:26.

:02:26. > :02:29.a big issue. Prices will go up. Healthspark is a mail order

:02:29. > :02:32.business based in Jersey that is considering his future. The boss

:02:32. > :02:40.has not want to relocate at a price hike for stamps could sway him to

:02:40. > :02:43.go. We are trying to reduce our cost of operating in Jersey so that

:02:43. > :02:49.be can stay. If Jersey Post increase the postage it could be

:02:49. > :02:53.the final nail in the coffin. have already been significant

:02:53. > :02:58.losses in the mail order industry. Postal workers are next, but their

:02:58. > :03:00.bosses are hoping to limit the impact by making an increase in

:03:00. > :03:10.that the price of stamps. Ironically that could drive from

:03:10. > :03:12.

:03:12. > :03:22.the island does businesses wanting to state.

:03:22. > :03:23.

:03:23. > :03:28.Emergency services were placed on full alert this morning.

:03:28. > :03:32.Fire police and ambulance crews were scrambled after the pilot

:03:32. > :03:42.reported he was returning to Alderney having shut down the

:03:42. > :03:44.

:03:44. > :03:50.centre engine. The pilot notice the engine pressure falling. He could

:03:50. > :04:00.also see from the murder that of looks at the rear engine that

:04:00. > :04:01.

:04:01. > :04:09.there: -- that a fitting had worked loose. He took the decision to

:04:10. > :04:14.close the engine down. He made a return to Alderney. The plane with

:04:14. > :04:19.seven passengers on board landed safely this morning. The met is his

:04:19. > :04:22.services were stood down. No one was hurt in the incident. An

:04:22. > :04:25.engineering crew has been sent to Alderney from Guernsey to

:04:25. > :04:29.investigate because of the technical issue and there should be

:04:29. > :04:32.able to identify it later today or tomorrow.

:04:32. > :04:35.There'll be more help in future for families affected by drug and

:04:35. > :04:38.alcohol abuse in Guernsey. A three year pilot project will offer

:04:38. > :04:40.counselling and support - the aim being to reduce the likelihood of

:04:40. > :04:45.children becoming addicts themselves. It's been made possible

:04:45. > :04:51.thanks to grants from Children in Need and the FRM Charitable Trust.

:04:51. > :04:54.Penny Elderfield reports. Bad habits can start young. And if

:04:54. > :05:04.a child grows up with parents who abuse alcohol or drugs - there's

:05:04. > :05:07.evidence to show they could be more likely to later on.

:05:07. > :05:09.But now this Guernsey charity could help reduce the chances of that

:05:09. > :05:19.happening after getting more than 100,000 from Children In Need to

:05:19. > :05:21.

:05:21. > :05:28.fund a three year project. programme is aimed at families who

:05:28. > :05:32.are affected by a diction. The main focus is on the children. To raise

:05:32. > :05:36.self-esteem and to reduce the possibility is that they could go

:05:36. > :05:39.on to be drug users themselves. The money will be used to help fund

:05:39. > :05:42.a full time post here at Drug Concern. But they'll be working

:05:42. > :05:52.with agencies right across the Island to identify those that need

:05:52. > :05:53.

:05:53. > :05:56.this extra help. Other charities and charity workers like this one

:05:56. > :06:01.has seen first-hand how children can develop problems with drink or

:06:01. > :06:07.drugs. That is exactly the kind of thing

:06:07. > :06:15.we need. That is not just good for the young people but for society as

:06:15. > :06:19.a whole. While the fund-raising may look like fun Children In Need can

:06:19. > :06:28.have a serious side, but hopefully this project will make a difference

:06:28. > :06:32.to families in Guernsey. A 32-year-old man from Guernsey has

:06:32. > :06:39.been sentenced to four years in prison with intent to supply a

:06:39. > :06:48.class B drug. Just before Christmas the man was -- the man's home was

:06:48. > :06:53.searched. 145 grams of a class B drug was found. The street value

:06:53. > :06:59.was almost 12,000. HMS daring has just completed

:06:59. > :07:07.exercises with the US Navy in the Gulf. The Type 42 destroyer has

:07:07. > :07:17.been training with the US fleet. Dearing is two months into the

:07:17. > :07:19.

:07:19. > :07:25.deployment. Still to come - Exeter airport get

:07:26. > :07:31.a memorial to highlight the importance of the airfield in the

:07:31. > :07:36.World War II. Stay tuned for that.

:07:36. > :07:42.First there is concerns that plans to improve road safety Kinnock

:07:42. > :07:52.Guernsey goods damaged wildlife. Wildlife experts say it it is too

:07:52. > :07:54.

:07:54. > :07:57.It is a battle between nature and man. These hedgerows might be home

:07:57. > :08:02.to rich wildlife, but the authorities say they are no danger

:08:02. > :08:09.and have to be cut. If the hedges overgrown onto the pavement, people

:08:09. > :08:16.walk on the road. There is need for work on the hedges to cut back so

:08:16. > :08:21.that there is safety for the pedestrians. Most householders

:08:21. > :08:24.would expect to have to cut their hedges in July. The Constable's

:08:24. > :08:29.want to bring forward the deadline because they say in some places

:08:29. > :08:36.hedges are obstructing pavements. It is a move that has angered

:08:36. > :08:43.nature lovers. They say this is a crucial time for wildlife and

:08:43. > :08:48.nesting birds. The breeding season is a fault slot. I would be aghast

:08:48. > :08:51.to think that the parish authorities could even begin to

:08:51. > :08:55.think of bringing it forward, particularly bringing it forward as

:08:56. > :09:01.far. Where not even an to April. Householders and landowners will be

:09:01. > :09:04.given a warning they could face a fine if they do not comply.

:09:04. > :09:13.Whatever side of the fence or hedge you sit it looks like the battle

:09:13. > :09:16.lines are drawn. Jersey's binmen are hoping to

:09:16. > :09:20.attract woman's attention with their new tracks. It is not to talk

:09:20. > :09:23.about rubbish. The pink refuse lorries will be used to promote

:09:23. > :09:27.women's health such as the importance of breast screening and

:09:27. > :09:31.cervical smears. The idea for the campaign came after a visit to a

:09:31. > :09:37.trade show to replace their ageing fleet. The so they could have it in

:09:37. > :09:41.any colour. I jokingly asked what and pink. They said yes. That is

:09:41. > :09:44.when I sent an e-mail to the medical officer of health and said

:09:45. > :09:48.I saw the sun thought of you, how about we do our campaign to raise

:09:48. > :09:55.awareness for press screening? awareness for press screening?

:09:56. > :09:58.Deeper my eye for those. Here is the weather: After a spell of

:09:58. > :10:05.summer weather in March we are going to cool down as you head

:10:05. > :10:08.towards April. The process will happen towards the

:10:08. > :10:15.end of the week. High pressure is giving us easterly winds at the

:10:15. > :10:20.moment. By the time we get to midday on Thursday it it is moving

:10:20. > :10:29.out into the Atlantic. We will draw in a northerly wind. That is a

:10:29. > :10:37.colder wind direction. The seeding and tonight clear skies again. No

:10:37. > :10:47.visibility problems. Tomorrow we will have a similar day. Unbroken

:10:47. > :10:49.

:10:49. > :10:59.sunshine, very little in the we have cloud. As to move into third

:10:59. > :11:11.

:11:11. > :11:21.Dick and Friday temperatures will Similar surfing conditions to what

:11:21. > :11:30.

:11:30. > :11:33.we have seen it all week. We will see a drop in temperatures. Still

:11:34. > :11:43.slightly above average, but beginning to come down as an winds

:11:44. > :11:44.
