:00:08. > :00:12.Good evening and welcome to bbc Channel Islands news. The top story
:00:12. > :00:18.is: As abuse victims are told they can claim compensation, there's a
:00:18. > :00:21.warning many will be too traumatised to do so. Also on
:00:21. > :00:30.Friday's programme - all change as a new bus operator takes to
:00:30. > :00:34.Guernsey's roads. After a taste of summer, we return
:00:34. > :00:40.to springtime conditions for Easter. It is turning cloudy and cooler
:00:40. > :00:50.This weekend, some sunshine with a chance of an April shower. More

:00:54. > :00:57.Victims of child abuse at Haut de La Garenne and other care homes in
:00:57. > :01:02.Jersey risk being traumatised by the process of applying for their
:01:02. > :01:05.compensation - that's according to the Jersey Care Leavers Association.
:01:05. > :01:12.A compensation scheme has been set up by the states to award
:01:12. > :01:15.individuals who suffered physical and sexual abuse up to 60,000 each.
:01:15. > :01:19.But to get the money victims will have to once again retell their
:01:19. > :01:22.stories. Rachel Royce reports. Around 100 victims of physical and
:01:22. > :01:28.sexual abuse in Jersey's care homes are expected to claim compensation
:01:28. > :01:31.for their suffering as children. The Historic Redress Scheme was set
:01:31. > :01:38.up to help victims move on with their lives by acknowledging the
:01:38. > :01:41.damage that was done to them as children. But since the scheme was
:01:41. > :01:44.announced the Jersey Care Leavers Association has been flooded with
:01:44. > :01:53.calls from victims who don't know if they can bring themselves to
:01:53. > :01:57.fill out the claim forms. There will be a lot of trauma and many do
:01:57. > :02:05.not want to relive the experiences and they will have to. The most
:02:05. > :02:10.traumatic side is to be interviewed by a psychiatrist, in some cases
:02:10. > :02:14.they will not have to. I've spoken to some victims that will not do it,
:02:14. > :02:20.they're too scared. One or two said they are worried they will be
:02:20. > :02:24.locked up. For a victim, what happens when the retell the story?
:02:24. > :02:30.They seem to go back into that state they were in when they were
:02:30. > :02:36.being abused. One in particular feels like the child she was, it
:02:36. > :02:39.really is affecting many in that way. One possible consequence of
:02:39. > :02:42.the schemes fact finding forms is that more evidence of child abuse
:02:42. > :02:46.could come to light if victims that haven't come forward in the past
:02:46. > :02:49.come forward now and recount their experience. Police said in a
:02:49. > :02:52.statement today, "As with any case if an alleged victim comes forward
:02:52. > :03:00.with new evidence we would take it seriously and investigate
:03:00. > :03:04.appropriately." Victims are not obliged to take part in the scheme,
:03:04. > :03:08.nor do they have to accept any offer it makes.
:03:08. > :03:11.It was put in place as an alternative to court because court
:03:11. > :03:21.is expensive and can be time- consuming. Above all, it was meant
:03:21. > :03:30.
:03:30. > :03:32.be part of a healing process, not another trauma to be relieved.
:03:32. > :03:35.With a contract now signed, Guernsey's buses are this week
:03:35. > :03:38.being handed over to a brand new operator. From Sunday, HCT will be
:03:38. > :03:41.in charge of running them instead of Island Coachways. Penny
:03:41. > :03:43.Elderfield reports. It's all change on Guernsey's buses and I'm not
:03:43. > :03:46.talking about passengers. Because this weekend a new company will
:03:46. > :03:51.take over running them. Meaning all of the Island coachways logos will
:03:51. > :03:58.be coming off and the new CT Plus ones going up. But passengers
:03:58. > :04:01.shouldn't notice too much else changing - for now at least. Two or
:04:01. > :04:06.three years down the line there will be new fleets and different
:04:06. > :04:11.vehicles and a mix of different vehicles. Initially, it is to run a
:04:11. > :04:14.good service. Island coachways said last year it couldn't accept the
:04:14. > :04:21.contract on offer. So after a decade of running the service, do
:04:21. > :04:27.they have any regrets? You can always do things
:04:27. > :04:31.differently but we are proud of what we achieved, very proud and we
:04:31. > :04:36.look at passenger growth and the service, I walk away with my head
:04:36. > :04:39.held high and I am proud. States had to work quickly to find
:04:39. > :04:46.another company to keep the service running. So has it come at an extra
:04:47. > :04:51.cost? It is mutually advantageous, a good deal for both sides and I am
:04:51. > :04:54.confident Guernsey will get good value for money and the team will
:04:54. > :04:58.see advantages to working with us. And that's a contract that was
:04:58. > :05:02.signed today. Meaning from Sunday it will be up to the new company
:05:03. > :05:09.what route to take the service down in future.

:05:16. > :05:20.Education says it's a fair assessment of the school, which has
:05:20. > :05:28.been in the spotlight after poor GCSE results last year. But the
:05:28. > :05:33.department says work is already underway to improve the situation.
:05:33. > :05:37.I can see why people would be concerned, some results were poor
:05:37. > :05:44.but we are doing everything possible to raise the standards in
:05:44. > :05:46.teaching at the School as quickly as possible and for the long term.
:05:46. > :05:49.Sandpiper has announced it's to close both its Gourmet Burger

:05:52. > :05:57.company say they've worked hard to make the restaurants work but
:05:57. > :06:00.disappointing results mean it'll concentrate on new ventures. 15

:06:16. > :06:18.Corbel says negotiations are at a very delicate stage but that
:06:18. > :06:25.meetings with Ministers have been constructive, and every possible

:06:39. > :06:42.and Sons have declined to comment. Meanwhile, it'll soon cost more to

:07:59. > :08:05.what it's all about. Brotherly love which is an
:08:05. > :08:13.association of men, altogether, relief is where we help charities
:08:13. > :08:18.and other situations which are needed and truth is a deeming of
:08:18. > :08:22.knowledge about life. We illustrate that through some of the enactments
:08:23. > :08:25.we do in the ceremonies. The group, or lodge has been meeting for 200

:08:27. > :08:32.ransacked their hall, stealing objects and destroying historical
:08:32. > :08:40.documents. But they've restored it fully and now the group is going
:08:40. > :08:45.strong with nearly 70 members. They are looking for more but women need
:08:45. > :08:50.not apply. It was always an association of men and that is the
:08:50. > :08:57.continuation. Some of the enactments we do in the service to
