:00:11. > :00:15.This evening. Welcome to the BBC in the Channel Islands.
:00:15. > :00:19.My sin overboard, ferry passengers help in the search for a woman who
:00:19. > :00:29.is feared lost in the Channel -- missing overboard.
:00:29. > :00:33.Lot sets date for our football and rugby teams. -- lots at stake.
:00:33. > :00:42.The Hollywood movie that is going to make Guernsey wait a little
:00:42. > :00:47.longer. But passengers have described how
:00:47. > :00:51.they joined in a search for a woman who fell overboard from a ferry
:00:51. > :00:56.yesterday evening. The woman who is in her 30s and from Bristol was
:00:56. > :01:03.reported missing by her husband. The search went on for nearly five
:01:03. > :01:08.hours before being called off late last night. She is from fish ponds
:01:08. > :01:15.in Bristol. The woman who has not been named
:01:15. > :01:19.her was returning after a day-trip to Guernsey. She was last seen at
:01:19. > :01:26.4:30pm yesterday and the alarm was raised just over an hour later. The
:01:26. > :01:30.captain asked passengers to help find her. They must have been about
:01:30. > :01:35.five or six calls from the captain. Eventually, they said that they
:01:35. > :01:41.would turn around and look for her. It was really odd. We thought she
:01:42. > :01:46.was in the toilet or something, that was what everyone was saying.
:01:46. > :01:52.But when everyone understood what was going on, it was really quiet
:01:52. > :01:59.and quite weird. It was not very nice. The emergency services
:01:59. > :02:05.including aircraft, and boats, scoured the area. The search was
:02:05. > :02:10.called off at 10pm last night. will not survive very long, an
:02:11. > :02:16.hour-and-a-half that the best. That is assuming that you are floating.
:02:16. > :02:21.You will be looking for a head. If you think about how big a head is,
:02:21. > :02:26.about the size of a football, it is not a very big target. Condor
:02:26. > :02:30.Ferries insist that there are plenty of safety measures on board.
:02:30. > :02:36.We have put railings and watches. It is not something that has
:02:36. > :02:41.happened before. At the moment, the investigation is being taken over
:02:41. > :02:47.by the Guernsey police. A police investigation has been launched but
:02:47. > :02:50.that is standard procedure for a missing persons inquiry.
:02:51. > :02:54.A senior Jersey Police officer has appeared before the Leveson Inquiry
:02:54. > :02:57.in London which is examining the relationship between the police and
:02:57. > :03:01.the press. Stewart Gull whose evidence relates to the
:03:01. > :03:06.investigation of the Ipswich murders in 2006 said he had never
:03:06. > :03:10.given off the record briefings and often spent five hours briefing the
:03:10. > :03:13.media describing them as a time stealer but necessary.
:03:13. > :03:16.A new headteacher will take over at La Mare de Carteret High School
:03:16. > :03:19.after Easter. The school has been in the spotlight after
:03:19. > :03:23.disappointing GCSE results last year which prompted a major review
:03:23. > :03:28.of the island's education system. Vicky Godley the current deputy
:03:28. > :03:32.head has now been promoted to the top job. She is due to start after
:03:32. > :03:37.the school holidays. An inquest into the death of a man
:03:37. > :03:39.who died after having a routine hernia operation at Jersey General
:03:40. > :03:44.Hospital has been hearing from the doctor who carried out the
:03:44. > :03:50.operation. The family of 75-year- old Joseph Vasse blames the
:03:50. > :03:55.hospital for his death. Joseph Vasse was a much loved
:03:55. > :04:00.father and grandfather but he died in 2008 after going into hospital
:04:00. > :04:04.for a routine hernia operation. Today we heard from a doctor who
:04:04. > :04:08.operated on Joseph Vasse, Mr Pal who had worked at the hospital for
:04:08. > :04:13.some 20 years. He says there was nothing unusual about the procedure
:04:13. > :04:18.and that he had performed 46 hernia operations every year. After the
:04:18. > :04:23.operation, Joseph Vasse became unwell. He did lead -- developed an
:04:23. > :04:26.infection. He had a history of heart problems. Joseph Vasse's
:04:26. > :04:30.family blame the hospital for his death and say that Mr Pal who
:04:30. > :04:34.carried out the operation needed a cataract operation on his eyes at
:04:35. > :04:42.the time of the surgery. They intend to sue the health department
:04:42. > :04:46.after the inquest. Guernsey and Jersey States will not
:04:46. > :04:50.be continuing the legal battle to save LVCR. As of yesterday, mail-
:04:50. > :04:54.order companies no younger get VAT relief on low-value items sent to
:04:54. > :04:58.the UK. Thousands of islanders are employed in the industry and today
:04:58. > :05:00.both islands decided not to appeal a High Court ruling which allowed
:05:00. > :05:07.the UK Treasury to push ahead with the plans.
:05:07. > :05:09.A short while ago I was joined in the studio by Jersey's economic
:05:09. > :05:13.development minister Senator Alan Maclean. I asked him whether the
:05:13. > :05:17.islands were rolling over and giving up. Certainly not. We have
:05:17. > :05:23.taken the decision to not appeal. It is a pragmatic decision. Quite
:05:23. > :05:26.simply, it will take two years to get to the European Courts of
:05:26. > :05:29.Justice and it would not be very helpful from the industry point of
:05:30. > :05:33.view. We will concentrate our resources on supporting business
:05:33. > :05:39.now. We took be original action against the UK quite simply because
:05:39. > :05:43.we were seeking to save jobs and we have clearly not been successful in
:05:43. > :05:47.the short term. There are other things we can do. You say two years
:05:47. > :05:53.is too long. It does that mean the industry is effectively dead as of
:05:53. > :05:58.now? No, not at all. There is a strong future in the broader e-
:05:58. > :06:02.commerce sector. It is just that as far as this particular battle is
:06:02. > :06:05.concerned, we need to focus our attention on the supporting
:06:05. > :06:09.businesses as they are now as opposed to carrying on with
:06:09. > :06:14.expensive and long-term legal battles that we may not succeed in.
:06:14. > :06:17.The what kind of support? We are supporting businesses insofar as
:06:17. > :06:27.looking at new markets and new products and services. We have to
:06:27. > :06:33.remember that CDs and DVDs were always a short to medium-term
:06:33. > :06:36.technology. Advances means that the business had a limited time frame.
:06:36. > :06:41.Businesses are looking at other markets and we will assist them to
:06:41. > :06:47.do that. We have lost the LVCR battle. We have recently seen an
:06:47. > :06:51.attack on stamp duty and capital- gains tax. Are we in a run where
:06:51. > :06:55.the UK will start chipping away at business in the Channel Islands?
:06:55. > :06:59.do not think so. We have to realise that ought to jurisdictions are in
:06:59. > :07:04.a position where they have to recoup as much revenue as they
:07:04. > :07:08.possibly can. The UK are doing that. We need to fight our corner. We are
:07:08. > :07:15.prepared to do that which is the reason why we took the decision to
:07:15. > :07:18.challenge the reason in the first place. We now have to look to the
:07:18. > :07:22.future to find a long-term sustainable future. I believe that
:07:22. > :07:27.for the broader e-commerce sector that does exist. Thank you very
:07:27. > :07:31.much. You are watching the BBC in the
:07:31. > :07:35.Channel Islands, later in Spotlight with Justin and Victoria, the 10-
:07:35. > :07:44.year-old boy celebrating after getting his first book published
:07:44. > :07:48.despite being dyslexic. Now, Jersey is facing near drought
:07:48. > :07:52.conditions and farmers are warning that this year's Jersey Royal crop
:07:52. > :07:55.could be devastated. March was the third dry month in a row with
:07:55. > :08:00.rainfall less than half the average for the time of year. Farmers say
:08:01. > :08:04.they desperately need rainfall in the next fortnight.
:08:04. > :08:09.At Abbey farm in Lattac they are hoping that irrigation will save
:08:09. > :08:11.this year's Jersey while crop due to be pulled in the next fortnight.
:08:12. > :08:16.Underneath the sandy earth the tubers are not smiling because
:08:16. > :08:21.there has been so little rainfall for the last three months. -- they
:08:21. > :08:26.are not swelling. Irrigation it is expensive but it is all they have
:08:26. > :08:30.got at the moment. It is becoming a real concern. It is the third year
:08:30. > :08:35.running where we have had drought conditions. It is at an important
:08:35. > :08:38.stage. They are just developing so it is now that will determine what
:08:38. > :08:43.the full potential is under the old we will get from this year's
:08:43. > :08:48.harvest. Are you expecting the harvest to be down on last year?
:08:48. > :08:58.we carry on with drab conditions, unfortunately, yes, we will see
:08:58. > :08:59.
:08:59. > :09:04.less crop available. Jersey's reservoirs still appear to have
:09:04. > :09:10.plenty of the rain largely due to December ring false. When is a
:09:10. > :09:14.drought not a drought? According to the Met Office, you need 0.1 mm of
:09:14. > :09:19.rain fault for 15 consecutive days for it to be labelled an absolute
:09:19. > :09:23.drought. That is what they have measured at Jersey airport but not
:09:23. > :09:27.at the official monitoring station. It is not a drought yet but it is
:09:27. > :09:35.not looking good. Growers say that this year's potato crop could be
:09:35. > :09:39.half what it is at its best. It was a big weekend for our
:09:39. > :09:42.footballers and rugby players. League titles and Cup finals were
:09:42. > :09:48.at stake. Jersey Football Combination were trying to clinch a
:09:48. > :09:53.place in the FA Inter League Cup Final. The Cheshire League Stud in
:09:53. > :09:57.their wake. Neither team were going to give up their place in the final
:09:57. > :10:01.without a fight -- the Cheshire Football League Stud in their wake.
:10:01. > :10:05.They are both two wins away from representing England but only one
:10:05. > :10:09.of them can go through. In the first half, the hosts were
:10:09. > :10:13.dominating. Craig Russell had a great chance to put Jersey ahead
:10:13. > :10:18.within the first 10 minutes. But his shot was denied by the crossbar.
:10:18. > :10:24.A couple of years later, he scored put in Jersey in the lead. -- a
:10:24. > :10:29.couple of minutes later. Danny Flynn and then try to make it 2-0
:10:29. > :10:38.but he was caught offside. In the second half, ownership of the game
:10:38. > :10:46.changed. With two minutes to go, Cheshire equalised a -- equalised.
:10:46. > :10:54.It was goalkeeper Craig Fletcher who kept Jersey in the game. At a
:10:54. > :11:00.1-1 draw it was down to penalties. Jersey was the first illness. But
:11:00. > :11:04.Craig Fletcher saved Cheshire's next two. -- Jersey was the first
:11:04. > :11:14.to mess. It was now down to Mark Lucas to score to put Jersey
:11:14. > :11:14.
:11:14. > :11:19.through to the final. And he did it. What a game! A decent opposition.
:11:19. > :11:23.We moved the ball around very well. I take my hat off to them, they
:11:23. > :11:27.were probably the better footballing side tonight. The boys
:11:27. > :11:32.showed a different side to their game tonight. They were struggling,
:11:32. > :11:36.it was a case of, or will we have enough players to take penalties
:11:36. > :11:40.tonight?! I am absolutely chuffed for the management and players who
:11:40. > :11:45.have put so much work in. We have got an exciting six weeks to look
:11:45. > :11:53.forward to us. Jersey-based the Isle of Man next week in the final.
:11:53. > :11:56.If they when they will represent England in the UEFA Regions' Cup in
:11:56. > :12:01.San Marino. Guernsey football club are through
:12:01. > :12:08.to the final of the Challenge Cup after a thrilling Friday night.
:12:08. > :12:11.They overcame a two-goal deficit. More than 1700 people watched
:12:11. > :12:18.Guernsey. They will now face Colliers Wood United in the final
:12:18. > :12:23.on 4th May. Jersey rugby team extended their
:12:23. > :12:28.lead to six points as they beat Tynedale 64-0. It means they could
:12:28. > :12:36.secured the title at their next home game against Macclesfield on
:12:36. > :12:41.14th April. Guernsey rugby players ran in an amazing 14 tries to win.
:12:41. > :12:46.Nick Barton scored six tries taking his tally to more than 1000.
:12:47. > :12:52.Guernsey now lead by three points to Old Elthamians with just two
:12:52. > :12:56.games of the season less to play -- left to play.
:12:56. > :12:58.The filming of a major Hollywood movie in Guernsey has been pushed
:12:59. > :13:06.back again. Producers of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel
:13:06. > :13:10.Pie Society movie say it is now likely to happen next spring.
:13:10. > :13:13.Showing off Guernsey's natural beauty, that is something that has
:13:13. > :13:18.always been important to the producers of the film version of
:13:18. > :13:23.this book, amiably it is now expected will not be found in
:13:23. > :13:26.Guernsey until next spring. The question of which Hollywood stars
:13:27. > :13:31.will feature in it is what is causing the whole that. Kate
:13:31. > :13:39.Winslet has already been confirmed that Dublin has and a black actors'
:13:39. > :13:47.schedules is not raising -- Kate Winslet has already been confirmed
:13:47. > :13:51.but juggling her eyes and a that actas' schedules is not easy.
:13:51. > :14:01.We know it is dry but let us find out what is happening with the rest
:14:01. > :14:02.
:14:02. > :14:07.Barely a cloud in the sky. The cloud will increase for some of us
:14:07. > :14:13.overnight. Pratchett cloud here and there but clear spells as well. --
:14:14. > :14:19.patchy cloud. The winds are fairly light and coming in from the north
:14:19. > :14:22.and west. Starting tomorrow, pretty decent weather. An area of low
:14:22. > :14:26.pressure will come from the channel which may produce the odd spot of
:14:26. > :14:32.rain by the end of play. High pressure is building and heading
:14:32. > :14:37.towards us for the end of the week. Ade dry and bright start tomorrow.
:14:37. > :14:44.The odd shower drifting. They will very much be hit and miss. Most
:14:44. > :14:49.places will stay dry. The winds will start to pick up speed because
:14:49. > :14:59.of the weather front pushing south into the Channel. The Marine
:14:59. > :15:00.
:15:00. > :15:10.forecast... The pressure is currently falling. The Sikh state
:15:10. > :15:15.is slight becoming moderate-wrath. -- the seat is slight. The
:15:15. > :15:20.outlook... A lovely started the day. Showers first thing on Wednesday. A
:15:20. > :15:25.cloudy start to their state. Brighter spells later on. The
