:00:12. > :00:17.Good evening. This is your BBC in the Channel Islands and here are
:00:17. > :00:22.our top stories. A man is seriously injured after an
:00:22. > :00:27.assault in St Peter Port. Police make two a rest. The police are
:00:27. > :00:30.devoting significant resources at an early stage in the inquiry.
:00:30. > :00:35.Condor Ferries could return to Weymouth after the council agreed
:00:35. > :00:40.to fix the harbour wall. And a hero returns home. The
:00:40. > :00:50.painting of Major Pierson's death in the battle of Jersey arrives in
:00:50. > :00:54.
:00:54. > :00:57.the island for all to see. I man has been seriously injured
:00:57. > :01:02.after being attacked by at bladed weapon in the housing Guernsey in
:01:02. > :01:05.the early hours. Several roads were closed as police made several
:01:05. > :01:09.arrests. A rumours have been flying around
:01:09. > :01:13.Guernsey today about what exactly happened and Number Ten Mount
:01:13. > :01:19.Durand this morning. At present, the facts are few and far between,
:01:19. > :01:23.but surely after 5:00am, a 26-year- old man was rushed to hospital from
:01:23. > :01:28.this road, suffering from what could have been a stabbing. What
:01:28. > :01:33.nature are his injuries? A I cannot comment in detail, but he has
:01:33. > :01:39.clearly been assaulted and a weapon has been used. Can you tell us what
:01:39. > :01:45.weapon? It is some sort of bladed item because of the injuries he
:01:45. > :01:47.sustained. It is not a gun. victim is in a serious but stable
:01:47. > :01:50.condition in the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and Guernsey police would
:01:50. > :01:55.like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area
:01:55. > :01:59.between 10pm last night and 5:00am this morning. I think an incident
:01:59. > :02:03.like this does have a disproportionate effect in Guernsey
:02:03. > :02:08.because we do not have much serious crime like this. Because of its
:02:08. > :02:13.severity, the police are devoting significant resources at this stage
:02:13. > :02:20.in the inquiry. Two people have been arrested and both remain in
:02:20. > :02:24.custody. A coroner has recorded an hour to
:02:24. > :02:28.verdict after the death of a man in a Jersey hospital. Joseph Vasse
:02:28. > :02:35.went in for a hernia operation three years ago, but developed an
:02:35. > :02:39.infection and died. What has happened in court? Joseph Vasse
:02:39. > :02:44.went into Jersey General for a hernia operation in 2008. He was
:02:44. > :02:49.operated on by his surgeon called Narinder Pal. He needed surgery for
:02:49. > :02:54.cataracts on his eyes at the time. After the operation, Joseph Vasse
:02:54. > :02:58.developed an infection and died. Joseph Vasse's family playing the
:02:58. > :03:02.surgeon and the hospital for his death. What do the verdict reveal?
:03:02. > :03:05.A coroner found that Joseph Vasse died from multiple organ failure
:03:05. > :03:10.and that his existing heart problems were a contributory factor
:03:10. > :03:14.in his death. The coroner said that after considering the evidence, he
:03:14. > :03:19.had no recommendations to make to improve safety at Jersey General
:03:19. > :03:23.Hospital in order to prevent similar things happening again. He
:03:23. > :03:28.also did not attribute blame to any one in what is called an hour to
:03:28. > :03:32.verdict. The hospital gave they are sincere condolences to the family
:03:32. > :03:37.and they said they are committed to continually improving safety and
:03:37. > :03:40.care and that many changes have been made over the last few years.
:03:41. > :03:47.The widow says she does not want her husband's death to be in vain
:03:47. > :03:52.and she is taking the case to court. Thank you.
:03:52. > :03:55.With an appeal ruled out, how long will it be before more of our
:03:55. > :04:02.Channel island mail order companies move elsewhere? Will any of them
:04:02. > :04:06.stay put? With its roots in the island, the star company says after
:04:06. > :04:10.decades have been in Guernsey, it is not going anywhere, despite the
:04:10. > :04:15.loss of VAT tax relief. That is because mail order is not the only
:04:15. > :04:21.side to the business. It is not so much a case of adapting, because
:04:21. > :04:25.our business was built up after 25 years of wholesale distribution to
:04:25. > :04:31.worldwide markets. We have only been in the market of mail order
:04:31. > :04:35.for the last four to five years, so it is reverting slightly back to
:04:36. > :04:38.what our strength was. It is because this business does not rely
:04:38. > :04:43.solely on mail order that it is able to stay here. Unfortunately,
:04:43. > :04:47.we know for others that is not the case. Key players like Healthspan
:04:47. > :04:52.and HMV have announced they are moving the distribution side their
:04:52. > :04:55.business elsewhere. Others are remaining tight-lipped. Like the
:04:55. > :05:00.online greeting card company Moonpig, who today would not
:05:00. > :05:05.confirm or deny why a -- whether they are moving. It does at
:05:05. > :05:11.Guernsey's government expect many to still be here. A lot of
:05:11. > :05:16.companies are at dealing with goods that are much higher in value than
:05:16. > :05:19.the chicken Simon relief levels that were in existence. I would
:05:19. > :05:26.hope that several of those companies would still be operating
:05:26. > :05:33.here. Not everyone will move. It will be a few months it before we
:05:33. > :05:36.know how many others feel bet is a future for them here.
:05:36. > :05:40.The rise in unemployment is one of the reasons more and more people
:05:40. > :05:47.are choosing to study. Jersey's Highlands College enrolled in extra
:05:47. > :05:54.100 people last year and they are preparing for even more students.
:05:54. > :05:57.Living the dream. At 19 years old, Glenn Noel is the younger chefs
:05:57. > :06:02.working at the Atlantic Hotel. He put much of his success in the
:06:02. > :06:07.kitchen down to his training. chose not to do A levels, because I
:06:07. > :06:12.wanted to be a chef. At Highlands College, I study the basics and
:06:13. > :06:18.fundamentals of cooking, along with the theory. I also learnt a lot of
:06:18. > :06:22.the mathematical stuff. We are increasing competition for jobs,
:06:22. > :06:27.there is a growing appetite for higher education in Jersey. By next
:06:27. > :06:32.year, there will be more than 11 under Highlands College and it is
:06:33. > :06:38.expected it will not stop there. With Moore Stephens, come what
:06:38. > :06:42.challenges. In terms of classrooms, we are fine, in terms of our
:06:42. > :06:47.library and other resources, we are stretched. Our workshops are
:06:47. > :06:51.stretched. There will be the need to put investment in if the numbers
:06:51. > :06:56.continue to grow as they are at the moment. It is a challenge, but we
:06:56. > :06:58.will try our best not to turn people away. Whether it is the
:06:58. > :07:02.first step on the path or retraining for changing career,
:07:02. > :07:08.more people seem to be turning to higher education to follow their
:07:08. > :07:16.ambitions. And for Glenn, who dreams of becoming the first Jersey
:07:16. > :07:21.born in Michelin-star chef, it was an investment that paid off.
:07:21. > :07:25.You are watching the BBC in the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight,
:07:25. > :07:31.good Condor Ferries return to Weymouth after the council there
:07:31. > :07:36.agree at the expense to fix the harbour wall?
:07:36. > :07:40.Now, the painting that depicts one of the most famous moments in
:07:40. > :07:45.Jersey's history has arrived in the island for the first time. The
:07:45. > :07:47.death of Major Pierson by American artist John Singleton Copley shows
:07:47. > :07:52.him at leading the British against the invading French in the battle
:07:52. > :07:57.of Jersey. It is been lent to the Jersey Museum from the Tate Gallery
:07:57. > :08:02.in London, but getting it here was quite a battle in itself. It is a
:08:02. > :08:05.precious cargo, measuring three metres by four macro they always
:08:06. > :08:09.have a ton. John Singleton Copley for's famous painting is usually in
:08:09. > :08:12.the Tate Gallery, but for a few moments it was hanging over the
:08:12. > :08:16.Jersey Museum, having been brought over for an exhibition that has
:08:16. > :08:20.been four years in the planning. The logistics of getting this
:08:20. > :08:24.picture into a modern museum and were never. Be easy and involved a
:08:24. > :08:28.bit of demolition. From the beginning, from the size of the
:08:28. > :08:33.painting, we had to estimate the size of the crater to protect it
:08:33. > :08:39.while it was being transported. From that, we had to give it Jersey
:08:39. > :08:43.the opening it would need from the balcony. It meant they had to
:08:43. > :08:46.remove a wall. The heroic death of Major Pierson who rallied the
:08:46. > :08:50.troops against a French invasion, is considered to be a pivotal
:08:50. > :08:57.moment, not only in Jersey's history, but also in Britain and
:08:57. > :09:07.America. Major Pierson was the leading military person at that
:09:07. > :09:09.
:09:09. > :09:15.time. His. Had gone back to London. He had left 10 in charge. He very
:09:15. > :09:21.much gathered the forces, collected them together and directed the
:09:21. > :09:27.forces and sent some regiments up and gathered everyone together in
:09:27. > :09:35.order to take them into the Royal Square. Here it is. The first time
:09:35. > :09:45.this painting, the death of Major Pierson has been seen in Jersey.
:09:45. > :09:48.
:09:48. > :09:52.Good to have it back. Let us take a The cold air is eventually going to
:09:52. > :09:56.seek down to the Channel and across the Channel to the Channel Islands
:09:56. > :10:00.tomorrow. A drop in temperatures, 12 or 13 today will drop down to
:10:00. > :10:03.seven or eight tomorrow. Quite a big change on the way, the cold
:10:03. > :10:08.front bringing that change will come in later tonight. It will
:10:08. > :10:11.bring some showers by the morning and then move away into the
:10:11. > :10:18.afternoon it to give us some quieter weather for a shorter
:10:18. > :10:22.period of time, before the breeze picks up. Into Thursday, we had
:10:22. > :10:27.easterly winds, which will become strong and there is the risk of
:10:27. > :10:31.patchy rain. Rainfall amounts are likely to be small. We will notice
:10:31. > :10:35.the drop in the temperatures and a cold wind it too. A few showers are
:10:35. > :10:39.possible tonight, wind will become north-westerly and temperatures
:10:39. > :10:43.will drop down to four five degrees. Tomorrow, we have a lot of cloud in
:10:43. > :10:47.the morning with some showers. A little bit brighter towards the end
:10:47. > :10:51.of the afternoon and into the evening. The winds will become a
:10:51. > :11:01.north-easterly and they will be fresh and temperatures of no higher
:11:01. > :11:05.
:11:05. > :11:15.than eight degrees. Forecasts for the coastal waters. Times of high
:11:15. > :11:24.
:11:24. > :11:28.As for the outlook, it's a bit warmer as the move towards the end
:11:28. > :11:33.of the Week in into the weekend. On Thursday, with the keen easterly
:11:33. > :11:43.breeze, and cloud giving patchy rain, it will be miserable, but
:11:43. > :11:46.
:11:46. > :11:50.brighter for Friday and also Some good news for a Guernsey than
:11:50. > :11:54.to have won the right to keep their name. The Risk had been in it legal

:11:58. > :12:01.strategy game Risk. The local musicians face further legal
:12:01. > :12:10.challenges from the X-Factor boy band, which has also started using
:12:10. > :12:13.the name The Risk. Now, let us find out in a moment what is happening
