:00:22. > :00:32.Storm-force winds rage around the island. UK and French energy

:00:32. > :00:52.

:00:52. > :00:55.But and we have the sport. -- And we. Beachfront businesses in parts

:00:55. > :00:58.of Jersey couldn't open this morning after they were hit by sand

:00:58. > :01:00.storms. Overnight gales piled sand from the beach against buildings

:01:00. > :01:03.and across roads. Meanwhile in Guernsey, lifeboat crews had to

:01:04. > :01:06.rescue a French yacht after it ran into difficulty because of the bad

:01:06. > :01:16.weather. Forecasters say the weather is set to improve. Nafisa

:01:16. > :01:17.

:01:17. > :01:21.Sayani reports. Sand everywhere. Staff at this Jersey cafe had to

:01:21. > :01:25.shovel their way in to work this morning after they found a wall of

:01:25. > :01:30.sand blocking the door. It was a wall of sound totally covering the

:01:30. > :01:35.door, you cannot get in. The San was everywhere. Unbelievable. We

:01:36. > :01:40.have never not been able to open the door, we can open it every day.

:01:40. > :01:45.But unfortunately cannot open today. And up the road at this wine shop,

:01:45. > :01:49.the breeze brought the beach to the car park. Amazing. We turned up to

:01:49. > :01:53.work but it was like we should have arrived on camels. Half the beach

:01:53. > :02:00.was in the car-park. We could not park anywhere. It is even round the

:02:00. > :02:03.back of the shop. In Guernsey, trees came down and authorities had

:02:03. > :02:10.to rescue this French yacht that ran into difficulty during the

:02:10. > :02:13.stormy weather. And in Alderney the owner of this yacht is in for a

:02:13. > :02:15.shock after it was wrecked and washed up on Braye Beach over the

:02:16. > :02:19.weekend. Authorities across the islands say they coped well with

:02:19. > :02:23.the conditions and remain prepared. We have had sand, over in the past

:02:23. > :02:28.but not in these quantities. I think it is because of the high

:02:28. > :02:31.winds we have had which have made it terrible. But while businesses

:02:32. > :02:37.have been working hard to clear up the mess, for some it's just an

:02:37. > :02:44.excuse to play. And Emily is here with the forecast later in the

:02:44. > :02:47.Could more volunteers be the answer to raising reading standards at

:02:47. > :02:50.Guernsey's primary schools? It was a key point raised in a recent

:02:50. > :02:53.report looking at primary education in the Island but is something

:02:53. > :03:03.that's already happening at some local schools. So how much of a

:03:03. > :03:06.

:03:06. > :03:10.difference has it made? Penny A fan of dinosaur and shipwreck

:03:10. > :03:16.books, John is just one of a number of pupils at Amherst who gets extra

:03:16. > :03:21.help reading thanks to these volunteers. I think they are quite

:03:21. > :03:28.nice because when we get stuck on a word they help us spell it.

:03:28. > :03:34.really like when I get stuck on tricky words. Then they help me.

:03:34. > :03:38.They normally just help Bass with the first word and then help us for

:03:38. > :03:42.the other words. Staff from a local finance company, they've been

:03:42. > :03:45.helping out here each week for the last few years. Now it is

:03:45. > :03:50.established it is easy to run. We turn up each week, the children

:03:50. > :03:53.read to us, we go back to work. It is amazing to see the development

:03:53. > :03:57.from the first term to the end of the third term. The children love

:03:57. > :04:02.it and I find a delightful to see children picking up books, reading

:04:02. > :04:09.so enthusiastically and feeling like to are part of it makes you

:04:09. > :04:16.feel quite special. At the end of the first year of the project were

:04:16. > :04:20.exceeded the target we had got for reading by 13%. The second year 60%

:04:20. > :04:26.of children in year two had made accelerated progress, so that is

:04:26. > :04:34.almost double what we had hoped they would make. That has continued.

:04:34. > :04:37.We are still seeing improvements. We are delighted. The pressure is

:04:37. > :04:39.on to improve reading standards across the Island's schools,

:04:39. > :04:47.including here at Amherst. So could more outside help inside the

:04:47. > :04:50.classroom be the answer? Could a new energy cable be built between

:04:50. > :04:53.Alderney, France and the UK? A group of UK and French politicians

:04:53. > :04:56.have been in the northern isle today to learn more about

:04:56. > :05:03.Alderney's renewable energy industry and how they can be a part

:05:03. > :05:06.of it. David Earl reports. everything goes to plan, lectricite

:05:06. > :05:16.de France plans to deploy a group of underwater turbines in the Bay

:05:16. > :05:20.

:05:20. > :05:23.of St Malo later this year. -- Electricite. It will be the largest

:05:23. > :05:25.project of its kind and will be used to feed marine renewable

:05:26. > :05:29.energy into the French electricity grid. The 800 tonne turbines are

:05:29. > :05:31.manufactured by an Irish company Open Hydro which has a a 20% stake

:05:32. > :05:34.in Alderney Renewable Energy. ARE hopes to export renewable energy to

:05:34. > :05:44.the United Kingdom, which is struggling to meet its commitment

:05:44. > :05:50.

:05:50. > :05:52.to generate 20% of its energy needs by 2020. The problem is that the

:05:52. > :05:55.Island needs an underwater cable connecting it to both France and

:05:55. > :05:58.the French delegation, headed by the President of the Conseil

:05:58. > :06:01.General de la Manche, Jean Francois Le Grand, was equally enthusiastic.

:06:01. > :06:11.We have been talking about how we might harness the two together. It

:06:11. > :06:16.is a really exciting project. here today to meet the UK minister

:06:16. > :06:23.of energy because we have common projects between Alderney and lamb

:06:23. > :06:33.monde about tidal turbines power and we are very interested by this

:06:33. > :06:36.project. -- La Manche. Clearly the "entente cordiale" generated at

:06:36. > :06:46.today's historic meeting bodes well for the future of renewable energy

:06:46. > :06:48.

:06:48. > :06:50.here in Alderney. It's still unclear why two thirds of houses in

:06:50. > :06:53.Guernsey were left without electricity last night after the

:06:53. > :06:56.undersea cable to Jersey failed. Homes in St Peter Port, St Martins,

:06:56. > :06:59.the Western Parishes and the Vale were without power for around half

:06:59. > :07:02.an hour from just before 7pm. Guernsey Electricity started a

:07:02. > :07:06.backup generator and the lights were back on by 7.30pm. They're now

:07:06. > :07:13.investigating the cause. Pat Dubras, a stalwart of Jersey's amateur

:07:13. > :07:17.dramatic scene has died. In an online tribute she's been described

:07:17. > :07:20.as a driving force in the amateur theatre world, and a true lady of

:07:20. > :07:24.the theatre who'll be sadly missed. She died at Jersey Hospice Care

:07:24. > :07:27.yesterday. A 15-year-old boy is in hospital after an accident with a

:07:27. > :07:31.car on Mont Millais. Jersey Police got a call just after 3.40pm this

:07:31. > :07:34.afternoon that a pedestrian had been hurt outside JCG. And up to 30

:07:34. > :07:37.dockworkers are at risk after George Troy and Sons has gone into

:07:37. > :07:39.liquidation. They're the only firm with a Stevedores license.

:07:39. > :07:42.Politicians in Jersey are now worried what will happen to the

:07:42. > :07:45.Island's freight service. Jersey will be playing European football

:07:45. > :07:48.next season after a dramatic win in the FA inter league cup final. They

:07:48. > :07:51.beat the Isle of Man and will now represent England but they were

:07:51. > :07:55.just seconds away from defeat, as Ian Kelly reports. The pre-match

:07:55. > :07:58.talk was all about the pitch. This may look like grass but it's a

:07:58. > :08:08.actually plastic, the first time an artificial surface has been used

:08:08. > :08:09.

:08:09. > :08:16.for a FA final. Would the crowd and the pitch give the Isle of Man the

:08:16. > :08:19.ultimate home advantage? It was the Isle of Man, playing in Jersey's

:08:19. > :08:26.usual red colours, who took the lead. An unfamiliar pitch, an

:08:26. > :08:29.unfamiliar kit, maybe this wasn't going to be Jersey's day. It took a

:08:29. > :08:35.couple of fine saves from Craig Fletcher to keep Jersey in the game.

:08:35. > :08:40.But time was quickly running out. Into the last minute of injury time

:08:40. > :08:45.and it was time for route one football. They say the game isn't

:08:45. > :08:51.over until it's over. Suddenly a lifeline. The scores level, extra

:08:51. > :08:55.time was called for. Jersey seemed to be getting the measure of the

:08:55. > :09:05.pitch. This clumsy challenge gave them a penalty. If Jack Canon was

:09:05. > :09:10.

:09:10. > :09:16.An eye for goal and for the camera. The Isle of Man tried to summon the

:09:16. > :09:19.energy for a fight back but this was Jersey's day. So long

:09:19. > :09:29.overshadowed by the success of their island's rugby team, now it

:09:29. > :09:34.

:09:34. > :09:38.was their time to celebrate. We knew we were down to the last

:09:38. > :09:43.couple of minutes but always said we have belief, hunger. This is all

:09:43. > :09:47.the players want. We want to play in front of big crowds. I was not

:09:47. > :09:54.happy with the artificial pitch when it was announced but it is a

:09:54. > :09:56.good service. We would have rather be played on grass but no excuses.

:09:56. > :10:05.I can't take away the character and determination the players showed

:10:05. > :10:12.today. These players will be pulling on the England shirt in San

:10:12. > :10:15.Marino in the autumn, living every amateurs footballer's dream. And if

:10:15. > :10:25.the pitch happens to be artificial, well, they'll take it in their

:10:25. > :10:27.

:10:27. > :10:29.Rugby - Jersey rounded off their greatest ever season with a 23-8

:10:29. > :10:39.win over Fylde, before being presented with the National One

:10:39. > :10:44.

:10:44. > :10:47.Edward Sault was there. atmosphere at St Peters on Saturday

:10:47. > :10:52.was simply electric as a bumper crowd came to support the team who

:10:52. > :10:57.had rounded off a perfect season. Jerseys celebrating their win, it

:10:57. > :11:07.should be great for the whole community. We're very proud. Pretty

:11:07. > :11:08.

:11:08. > :11:11.excited. It will be a good game. And it was, despite a determined

:11:11. > :11:15.Fylde side, Jersey's 23-8 win was built on defence. Two penalties, a

:11:15. > :11:18.penalty try and conversion took the halftime score to 13 -0. Ross

:11:18. > :11:27.Broadfoot's kicking and another penalty try increased Jersey's lead

:11:27. > :11:30.to 23-3. We had to be on form today and for the Le -- first 20 minutes

:11:30. > :11:39.we were under pressure. I thought we played really well, especially

:11:39. > :11:43.in defence. But no time to rest. have a big weekend next weekend so

:11:43. > :11:46.another week of hard work, then a few weeks off before we get

:11:46. > :11:54.together on June 4th and prepare for next season. A lot of work

:11:54. > :11:57.ahead. And for Steve O Brien this was his last match and one that was

:11:57. > :12:02.clearly emotional. I have been lucky to play with some wonderful

:12:02. > :12:12.players since I have come to the island. Great guys. It continues

:12:12. > :12:29.

:12:29. > :12:32.now. But this was the moment the Guernsey and Jersey's rugby and

:12:32. > :12:35.football teams have had a triumphant season. They'll of

:12:35. > :12:38.course face each other in the Muratti final and Siam cup next

:12:38. > :12:41.week. But this was the perfect round off to a spectacular season

:12:41. > :12:51.of Channel Island sport. So let's see what the weather brings next,

:12:51. > :12:51.

:12:51. > :12:55.More settled and dry weather to come in the week ahead. It will

:12:55. > :13:00.turn dry and warm Faure time in the middle of the week ahead. It has

:13:00. > :13:03.been low pressure dominating the weather. This area has made its way

:13:03. > :13:07.south West woods. It becomes more settled by the end of the day

:13:07. > :13:11.tomorrow with just a few shells around and by the time we get to

:13:11. > :13:15.Wednesday some high pressure is starting to influence whether, so a

:13:15. > :13:20.greater chance of sunshine and to budget will respond to that. It

:13:20. > :13:28.will be warmer air during the day. Tonight there is still heavy rain

:13:28. > :13:34.and strong winds for a time. They he's off later in the night.

:13:34. > :13:38.Temperatures are milder overnight. It will be a wet start to the day

:13:38. > :13:42.tomorrow but the rain should quickly clearer way, followed by

:13:42. > :13:52.the chance of a couple of showers in the afternoon with winds coming

:13:52. > :13:53.

:13:53. > :14:03.in from the south or south-east. Rain and the risk of showers

:14:03. > :14:17.

:14:17. > :14:23.generally, moderate disability at The water looks pretty flat for

:14:23. > :14:28.surfing. In terms of sunshine it should improve towards the middle

:14:28. > :14:32.of the week. Wednesday looked dry with sunny spells and it should

:14:32. > :14:42.feel pleasantly warm. Similar day through Thursday but unsettled

:14:42. > :14:45.

:14:45. > :14:48.Guernsey's Chief Minister hustings get underway at 7pm this evening at

:14:48. > :14:51.the grammar school, ahead of tomorrow's election. We'll have the
