:00:51. > :00:55.A former Guernsey tennis coach has gone on trial in Guernsey today

:00:55. > :01:00.accused of indecently assaulting two young girls. Jose Felix Alvarez

:01:00. > :01:05.faces six charges relating to alleged incidents during the 1990s.

:01:05. > :01:08.Mike Wilkins was in court. Arriving at Court this morning

:01:08. > :01:10.wearing sunglasses and a black suit, the well-known tennis coach Jose

:01:10. > :01:17.Felix Alvarez, who is accused of indecently assaulting two of his

:01:17. > :01:21.pupils. Today, here at Guernsey's Royal Court, Advocate Calderwood

:01:21. > :01:23.set out the prosecution's case in his opening statement. 47-year-old

:01:23. > :01:31.Jose Felix Alvarez faces six charges of indecently assaulting

:01:31. > :01:36.two young girls during their tennis lessons in the 1990s. Mr Alvarez

:01:36. > :01:40.denies the charges. Reporting restrictions were imposed today,

:01:40. > :01:43.banning the media from repeating much of the evidence heard. This

:01:43. > :01:45.afternoon the court heard from the first alleged victim and more

:01:45. > :01:50.prosecution witnesses are expected to give evidence tomorrow before

:01:50. > :01:56.the defence begins its case. The trial is expected to last a

:01:57. > :02:01.fortnight. Guernsey's politicians have

:02:01. > :02:05.rejected plans to freeze their own pay for four years. It means their

:02:05. > :02:08.salaries will go up in line with average earnings. Our reporter

:02:08. > :02:11.Penny Elderfield was following the debate and joins me now live from

:02:11. > :02:19.our Guernsey newsroom. Penny, firstly, why was this pay freeze

:02:19. > :02:21.even a possibility? Since the current pay deal was

:02:21. > :02:25.agreed, there's been an election. The thought was that a new

:02:25. > :02:28.government might take a new stance on how much they should get paid.

:02:28. > :02:33.So, a group of deputies brought forward plans that would have seen

:02:33. > :02:43.their pay frozen till 2016. Arguing if the public were facing tough

:02:43. > :02:52.times, they should all take a hit, too. In the private sector we have

:02:52. > :02:55.had pay freezes, job losses, pay cuts. It is time that the link to

:02:55. > :02:59.automatic pay increases in the public sector, which include

:02:59. > :03:03.deputies, should be broken. large majority of the States were

:03:03. > :03:06.against freezing their pay, why? The key argument was that in order

:03:06. > :03:09.to attract a good range of candidates from a range backgrounds,

:03:09. > :03:14.the salary has to remain attractive and be enough to allow people to do

:03:14. > :03:16.it as their full-time job. Others said by sending out the message pay

:03:16. > :03:21.freezes were acceptable, the private sector might take that on

:03:21. > :03:25.board at a time when the States want to get the economy moving. And

:03:25. > :03:33.then there were those that just didn't think this was a debate the

:03:33. > :03:39.States should be having at all. is totally inappropriate. No

:03:39. > :03:45.organisation should talk about its own day. Independent investigation

:03:45. > :03:49.should be set up. So, the result of today's decision is that their

:03:49. > :03:51.salary will go up each year in line with average earnings locally. But

:03:51. > :03:59.that also means that if that figure doesn't increase, neither will

:03:59. > :04:02.their pay. Sports in Jersey will get an extra

:04:02. > :04:05.100,000. It's to help the Island Games team get to the Bermuda Games

:04:05. > :04:08.next year and invest in sport before the Games come to Jersey in

:04:08. > :04:16.2015. It comes after concerns about the original travel costs,

:04:16. > :04:19.estimated at 2,000 per athlete to get to Bermuda. More details have

:04:19. > :04:22.emerged about a proposal for Jersey's Government to buy land at

:04:22. > :04:25.Plemont. The Chief Minister wants to spend 8 million of public money

:04:25. > :04:33.on the former Pontins holiday camp site and sell it to the National

:04:33. > :04:36.Trust for Jersey for 2 million. They want to return the land to

:04:36. > :04:39.nature. The proposals come as an independent inquiry is underway

:04:39. > :04:42.into plans to build homes on the site, but the architect behind

:04:42. > :04:44.those plans says its owners want 14 million if they are to sell.

:04:44. > :04:50.Rubbish isn't usually a star visitor attraction, but for

:04:50. > :04:53.businesses in Jersey, this week, it is! They're getting a rare look

:04:53. > :04:56.inside the island's incinerator in a bid to make them think twice

:04:56. > :05:02.about what they do with their waste. Our reporter, Nafisa Sayani, joined

:05:02. > :05:05.them. It's a familiar sight on Jersey's

:05:05. > :05:09.landscape, but ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the

:05:09. > :05:15.island's incinerator? Well today, its doors have been opened to local

:05:15. > :05:18.businesses so they can find out. As Eco-Active firms, they're leading

:05:18. > :05:21.the way when it comes to recycling schemes and they have been invited

:05:21. > :05:31.on a tour of the waste site, which is normally restricted to the

:05:31. > :05:32.

:05:32. > :05:36.public. I just came because it is curious. You see this huge block

:05:36. > :05:42.being built and you want to understand a bit more about it.

:05:42. > :05:45.Seeing what it is being used for us quite reassuring. This tour is one

:05:45. > :05:48.of a number of events happening during Recycle for Jersey Week,

:05:48. > :05:52.aimed at spreading the recycling word. Bosses have even drafted in

:05:52. > :05:55.the help of this handsome fellow. Known as Mr Robot and made of old

:05:55. > :05:59.household appliances, he's been out and about all over the island. With

:05:59. > :06:02.plans to make Recycle for Jersey Week an annual event, this could be

:06:02. > :06:05.just the push needed to get the whole island all fired up about

:06:05. > :06:08.waste. Generally we are becoming more and more aware of for Social

:06:08. > :06:12.responsibility and we have got to continue. There was so much more

:06:12. > :06:15.that be can do. We think it is important to start young and

:06:15. > :06:22.hopefully it will become a lifestyle change and people will

:06:22. > :06:25.just get into the habit of making good recycling decisions. With

:06:25. > :06:28.plans to make Recycle for Jersey Week an annual event, this could be

:06:28. > :06:38.just the push needed to get the whole island all fired up about

:06:38. > :06:42.waste. You'll can see all of the publicly-owned Channel Islands oil

:06:42. > :06:44.paintings in a new catalogue. It's been published by charity, the

:06:44. > :06:47.Public Catalogue Foundation, which is putting together all the oil

:06:47. > :06:50.paintings in public ownership in the UK. The Channel Islands volume

:06:50. > :06:53.contains around 1,800 paintings on display and in storage. It's taken

:06:53. > :06:56.three years to put together by islander Anne Binney with the help

:06:56. > :07:06.of Fred Hohler, the founder of the charity. They believe it's an

:07:06. > :07:10.

:07:10. > :07:13.important record. It shows the history of the islands

:07:13. > :07:23.before photography. We have wonderful landscapes and portraits

:07:23. > :07:26.

:07:26. > :07:32.from the early-day -- early days. It shows the scale of a lot of

:07:32. > :07:37.local artists. The Channel Islands have kept all of their paintings in

:07:37. > :07:43.their galleries, so what you're looking at is a family album. He is

:07:43. > :07:48.a family photograph album and it tells this story of these islands.

:07:48. > :07:56.I know of no other catalogue that has that story telling effect

:07:56. > :07:59.uniquely within its covers. The poor weather has had an impact

:07:59. > :08:02.on apple crops in Guernsey not good news if you're a local cider

:08:02. > :08:05.company. But if you've got surplus supplies in your own garden perhaps

:08:05. > :08:10.you can help. Oliver Farrimond reports.

:08:10. > :08:16.Ripe and ready for pressing. But whilst the sun's out today, the

:08:16. > :08:24.lack of it this year has had an impact here. And this is one of the

:08:24. > :08:30.worst crops for years. It warned done, then went cold, was damp and

:08:30. > :08:36.windy. Consequently, the blossoms did not set. That means it will be

:08:36. > :08:41.able to make less cider. It'll be quite a balancing act keeping

:08:41. > :08:44.everybody supplied next year. It does make my job more difficult.

:08:44. > :08:48.For the last few years apple supplies have been topped up by the

:08:48. > :08:52.public. Trading their own crop in for cash or the final product. And

:08:52. > :08:56.the owners will be hoping for more than usual to make up the shortfall.

:08:56. > :09:00.We have seen more people because we have been publicising it this year,

:09:00. > :09:06.but what smaller quantities. Hopefully we will get about 10 tons

:09:06. > :09:09.of apples. Ready to press, the next lot of apples it may not have been

:09:09. > :09:14.the best of seasons. But everyone here will be hoping for a more

:09:14. > :09:19.fruitful one next year Finally, a baby gorilla's been born at Durrell

:09:19. > :09:24.wildlife park for the first time in nearly a decade. Mum, Hlala Kahilli,

:09:24. > :09:27.gave birth this morning, which is dad Badongo's birthday. It's the

:09:27. > :09:34.first offspring for the pair and was due in November, so it's early

:09:34. > :09:40.arrival this morning came as a surprise to keepers.

:09:40. > :09:46.We came in this morning and we found the mother with the infants

:09:46. > :09:49.doing well. It was amazing for us. It is earlier than we expected, but

:09:49. > :09:55.we obviously got our calculations a little bit wrong and missed the

:09:55. > :10:00.meeting with her. It is fantastic news. We're really, really pleased.

:10:00. > :10:10.There are more pictures of that arrival on good Jersey pictures

:10:10. > :10:10.

:10:10. > :10:17.There is the chance of a few showers around tomorrow. It will be

:10:17. > :10:21.breezy, as well. That changed tomorrow as this weather front is

:10:21. > :10:24.weakening as it heads across us and it will bring some showers for a

:10:24. > :10:28.time. At the time we get to Saturday to a weather front has

:10:28. > :10:33.cleared away. We should see some sunshine for the weekend. For

:10:33. > :10:38.tonight, there is a fair amount of cloud around overnight. It will be

:10:38. > :10:42.dry initially tonight's, but in the early hours of the morning we might

:10:42. > :10:46.start to see the Roger hour creeping in. The wind will increase

:10:46. > :10:50.overnight. Temperatures will be no law than 12 degrees. First thing

:10:50. > :10:55.tomorrow morning it will still be quite cloudy. There will be the

:10:55. > :11:00.chance of some brighter spells, but by the end of the they think we

:11:00. > :11:07.will be seeing the showers moving. It'll be breezy from the west and

:11:07. > :11:17.south-west. We too have the isolated showers, but generally

:11:17. > :11:38.

:11:38. > :11:42.Towards the weekend will see some fine and dry weather. I think on

:11:42. > :11:50.Saturday we will will see a good deal of clear proof -- clear blue
