:00:13. > :00:16.Good evening. Coming up this evening.

:00:16. > :00:21.We join Liberation Day celebrations around the islands as young and old

:00:21. > :00:25.remember the end of the occupation. Fantastic. It is my third time of

:00:25. > :00:27.being here. The emblem of freedom. A poignant

:00:27. > :00:33.day for the Guernseyman in this iconic photograph.

:00:33. > :00:43.Also tonight, remembering Antoine. Why the family of a child who died

:00:43. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:48.of a brain tumour are raising Thousands of people in the Channel

:00:48. > :00:52.Islands have been celebrating the day Jersey and Guernsey were freed

:00:52. > :00:56.from German occupation 68 years ago. Crowds gathered in St Helier and St

:00:56. > :01:06.Peter Port to mark the end of five years of German rule on the 9th of

:01:06. > :01:08.

:01:08. > :01:11.To many, this is the side of Liberation Day that matters the

:01:11. > :01:14.most. By 10 o'clock, crowds packed out Jersey's Liberation Square to

:01:14. > :01:24.mark one of the most important days in the history of the Channel

:01:24. > :01:30.

:01:30. > :01:37.Islands. Happy Liberation Day. meet in the name of God who made us

:01:37. > :01:40.at who knows us... It was a chance to remember, and to reflect on the

:01:40. > :01:47.day, 68 years ago when Jersey was finally freed after five years of

:01:47. > :01:53.German occupation. The was see that the order people, those who were

:01:53. > :01:56.there, it is very emotional for them. This was one of the

:01:56. > :02:05.particularly emotional moments, as Liberation Day was re-enacted

:02:05. > :02:08.decades on. And then, what a moment for this team of cyclists who had

:02:09. > :02:14.pedalled to Bad Wurzach in Germany and back to bring a message of

:02:14. > :02:24.goodwill to the crowd. Take you all, I send my sincere or gratings and

:02:24. > :02:24.

:02:24. > :02:31.best wishes on your Liberation Day. -- by sincere gratings. I know this

:02:31. > :02:38.will be celebrated in the most honourable way. And similar scenes

:02:38. > :02:43.here in Guernsey. We are leading the parade with our banks. We have

:02:43. > :02:50.done it before and we are very proud of it. It is great to get the

:02:50. > :02:56.youngsters involved as well. This is a serious part of Liberation Day.

:02:56. > :03:03.It is a great honour to be here. And crowds quickly gathered to

:03:03. > :03:07.watch this important part of the day.

:03:07. > :03:17.But as well as being a chance to remember, Liberation Day is also a

:03:17. > :03:24.

:03:24. > :03:28.chance to celebrate. And for people It is our day. It is Guernsey's day.

:03:28. > :03:36.It is Liberation Day. And the Islands certainly know how to throw

:03:36. > :03:40.a party. It helps to keep history alive it was stop and what the

:03:40. > :03:46.older people did for us as well. It is so special. If the children know

:03:46. > :03:53.about it, it is keeping it alive. It is a time for remembering the

:03:53. > :03:56.war, basically. And having a good time.

:03:56. > :03:59.In Jersey too, the celebrations carried on into the afternoon. A

:03:59. > :04:05.chance to rejoice and remember this signifcant day 68 years ago when

:04:05. > :04:07.the Channel Islands were set free. Despite the passing of time, for

:04:07. > :04:10.some who endured the Occupation, the memories remain vivid. Charles

:04:10. > :04:13.Langlois was a teenager in Guernsey when the Germans occupied his

:04:13. > :04:23.island. Mike Wilkins spent the day with Charles to find out what

:04:23. > :04:31.

:04:31. > :04:34.For the young man in this photograph, almost seven decades on,

:04:34. > :04:42.the headlines may have changed, but the affection he feels for the

:04:42. > :04:47.liberating force who gave him his freedom remains the same. To see

:04:47. > :04:52.them, Shaw was just unbelievable. I know that everybody says the same,

:04:53. > :04:55.but it is something you cannot forget. After a quick cup of tea

:04:55. > :05:01.this morning, Charles was determined to find his grandson who

:05:01. > :05:11.was on parade today. You expect to see the old people down here, but

:05:11. > :05:11.

:05:11. > :05:21.it is surprising to see the young ones as well. Very smart. Aren't we

:05:21. > :05:22.

:05:22. > :05:26.the lucky ones? They look very smart. Congratulations. We have to

:05:26. > :05:32.remember what people went through. Especially the people who were here

:05:32. > :05:42.during the operation, like my grandfather. It does you good.

:05:42. > :05:54.

:05:54. > :05:57.Youngsters have such a bad image, we all -- we tend to say... It will

:05:57. > :06:07.not be a quiet night for the neighbours. But we will keep their

:06:07. > :06:15.

:06:15. > :06:17.windows closed and hope for the best. You can see more photos from

:06:17. > :06:23.the Liberation Day celebrations around the islands on our Facebook

:06:23. > :06:26.Page. Just search for CI News. Families of children diagnosed with

:06:26. > :06:30.cancer in Jersey are getting more support thanks to a local couple

:06:30. > :06:32.who have raised more than 100,000. Paul and Anne Willing set up the

:06:32. > :06:35.Antoine Trust after they lost their seven-year-old son to the disease

:06:35. > :06:37.last year. Since then, they have helped fund a new specialist

:06:37. > :06:40.children's cancer nurse for Jersey's General Hospital. Nafisa

:06:40. > :06:44.Sayani went to meet them. Nobody can describe what it is like to

:06:44. > :06:47.lose a child. But to go through the years of treatment, whatever the

:06:47. > :06:49.outcome, the uncertainty and, to be honest, the misery of going through

:06:49. > :06:53.that process is something you just can't describe. So anything that

:06:53. > :06:56.can be done to alleviate that and improve the level of care for both

:06:56. > :06:59.the children and their families is something that we are very keen to

:06:59. > :07:02.explore. Antoine Willing was diagnosed with a brain tumour just

:07:02. > :07:04.after his fifth birthday. For him and his parents, that meant regular

:07:04. > :07:14.trips to and from Southampton Hospital for cancer treatment.

:07:14. > :07:24.

:07:24. > :07:27.Nobody can describe what it is like Antoine died last April after two

:07:27. > :07:30.years fighting the disease. In his memory, his parents set up the

:07:30. > :07:32.Antoine Trust. From donations to the charity, they have funded a

:07:32. > :07:40.specialist nurse at Jersey General Hospital to co-ordinate care

:07:40. > :07:44.between the UK and here. Primarily, a lot of the care is done in the UK,

:07:44. > :07:46.so it's important to bridge that gap between us here in Jersey and

:07:46. > :07:49.the UK and develop close working and professional relationships

:07:49. > :07:52.between the two centres. Then at least, when the families are going

:07:52. > :07:55.over, they have got names, they have got points of contact, they

:07:55. > :07:58.have got references. That extra support has come too late for Anne

:07:58. > :08:08.and Paul, but knowing there will be more help for other young cancer

:08:08. > :08:11.

:08:11. > :08:20.patients and their families brings Good evening. Tomorrow, it will

:08:20. > :08:24.remain breezy. Still on the cool side. This area of low pressure has

:08:24. > :08:33.been quite a deep one for the time of year. It is moving out of the

:08:33. > :08:37.way tonight, moving into the North Sea. Further weather systems will

:08:37. > :08:42.bring outbreaks of rain into the end of the day. Saturday is a bit

:08:42. > :08:47.more straight forward with a mix of sunshine and showers. Some more

:08:47. > :08:55.persistent rain for a time tonight. That will fade away and it will

:08:55. > :09:05.become largely dry. The wind will start to drop. Tomorrow, a risk of

:09:05. > :09:07.

:09:07. > :09:15.showers. Later in the day, some more persistent rain could move

:09:15. > :09:25.across the area. It is a West or south-westerly Force 5 up. Showers

:09:25. > :09:38.

:09:38. > :09:44.of and then fares. Generally good The outlook is unsettled. We will

:09:44. > :09:48.see further outbreaks of rain. On Saturday, there could be a lot of

:09:48. > :09:52.dry weather around after some showers first thing. On Sunday,
