:00:12. > :00:19.But strikers in Guernsey go back to work but passengers have another day

:00:19. > :00:23.of disruption. We are spending the week here without our cars, we are

:00:23. > :00:28.relying on the public transport, and it has scuppered our holiday.

:00:28. > :00:33.Getting closer to wildlife, holding work begins on Jersey's first

:00:33. > :00:37.wetland Centre. And... Here he is in the cricket

:00:37. > :00:44.team. We go back to the place where

:00:45. > :00:54.Superman's acting dream took off. It is exciting to go to school with

:00:55. > :01:00.

:01:00. > :01:04.Bus users in Guernsey have had another day of disruption. Drivers

:01:04. > :01:08.who were on strike yesterday were back at work today but say they are

:01:08. > :01:16.running a restricted service all week. Talks are underway between

:01:16. > :01:20.Plus, the union and the government. Back on the roads, but not back to

:01:20. > :01:24.normal, yesterday's strike may be over but there is still disruption

:01:25. > :01:29.for many passengers as drivers are working to rule, which means a

:01:29. > :01:34.restricted service. I have come from Australia with certain expectations,

:01:34. > :01:39.like I could get around on the buses, and it is not happening.

:01:39. > :01:43.have never seen such a model in terms of lack of information. We are

:01:43. > :01:48.spending the week here without our cars. We are relying on the public

:01:48. > :01:54.transport. It has scuppered our holiday. It is disappointing, it has

:01:55. > :02:00.disrupted my holiday. I wanted to go around on the bus. The strike came

:02:00. > :02:03.after months of unrest. Talks are underway between unions, the

:02:03. > :02:07.commerce and employment Department and the bus company to thrash a

:02:07. > :02:13.long-term solution. But opinions differ on how is accessible they

:02:13. > :02:18.are. The company that runs the buses, CT Plus, are based behind me.

:02:18. > :02:22.Nobody agreed to be interviewed on camera, but they sent me a statement

:02:22. > :02:26.in which they said talks had been constructive and productive. But the

:02:26. > :02:31.union says drivers are planning to meet again at the weekend to discuss

:02:31. > :02:34.further industrial action. They are refusing to take on extra shifts.

:02:34. > :02:43.There is still a shortage of staff, so the temporary timetable will

:02:43. > :02:47.continue. The teacher is being investigated by

:02:47. > :02:51.police after injuring a student at a jersey secondary school. Officers

:02:51. > :02:55.are working with the alleged victim, his family and other students and

:02:55. > :02:58.teachers to find out what happened. It has not been confirmed which

:02:58. > :03:00.school it is. The number of unemployed people in Guernsey could

:03:00. > :03:07.be reduced by a new scheme announced today.

:03:07. > :03:09.The pilot project is called Stepping In. It will give local employers the

:03:10. > :03:13.opportunity to train unemployed job-seekers so they can step into

:03:13. > :03:20.the roles of islanders who are employed on a working permit when

:03:20. > :03:23.they expire. The point of the scheme is that somebody will be paid by the

:03:23. > :03:28.states sharing their training period.

:03:28. > :03:31.It is the employer's decision as to whether to take them on. It is a

:03:32. > :03:35.time honoured tradition and some say a necessity.

:03:35. > :03:40.The law governing the trimming of hedges, trees and plants in jersey

:03:40. > :03:44.could face big changes for the first time in more than a decade. But

:03:44. > :03:50.there are worries that updating the rules could end up damaging the

:03:50. > :03:53.island in the long run. Some of jersey's most breathtaking fruits,

:03:54. > :03:57.but they can also be some of the most dangerous.

:03:57. > :04:01.Hedges and plants are narrow lanes must be trimmed to a certain height

:04:01. > :04:08.during the period to stop them blocking the road when they become

:04:08. > :04:13.overgrown. Now, that timeframe could be extended bringing it by a week.

:04:13. > :04:20.It is mostly farmers, and people with cars who live in country lanes,

:04:20. > :04:24.they said, I cannot see, I am touching both sides. A lot of people

:04:24. > :04:28.are nervous at the width of their car, in case there is something in

:04:29. > :04:33.the hedge that would damage it. But there is concern if plans are cut

:04:33. > :04:38.back before they have had chance to succeed, it could rummage the beauty

:04:39. > :04:42.of the countryside in the long term. There are increasing numbers of

:04:42. > :04:48.people on walking holidays and cycling holidays, they are looking

:04:48. > :04:55.for the character of the island. is not the main roads, it is the

:04:55. > :05:02.interior. If they are always being trimmed, year after year, at the

:05:02. > :05:06.wrong period, you are going to lose the variety of flora and fauna. The

:05:06. > :05:10.discussion will move indoors to be debated in the States Chamber in

:05:10. > :05:15.July. While farmers and landowners may well come more flexibility,

:05:15. > :05:24.others will argue flowers like these need to be given a fighting chance

:05:24. > :05:28.if they are to flourish. A private aeroplane had to make an

:05:28. > :05:30.emergency landing at Guernsey Airport today. The pilot reported

:05:31. > :05:35.problems with the engine immediately after takeoff. The emergency

:05:35. > :05:41.services were stuck down after the aeroplane landed safely just after

:05:41. > :05:47.11 o'clock. It is relatively unusual, we probably have two or

:05:47. > :05:53.three of these incidents per month. They tend to go in fits and starts,

:05:53. > :05:58.sometimes you do not get any for a long time. We are well rehearsed,

:05:58. > :06:04.our emergency procedures are automatically invoked.

:06:05. > :06:09.Building work has begun on jersey's first wetland Centre. It is due to

:06:09. > :06:13.open at St Ouen's Pond in October. It will give nature lovers

:06:13. > :06:18.unrivalled views and help them get closer to wildlife.

:06:18. > :06:24.It has taken years of planning, but work is underway on a new visitor

:06:24. > :06:28.centre, here at St Ouen's Pond. It will be the first ever wetland

:06:28. > :06:34.Centre on the island, designed to bring people and wildlife together.

:06:34. > :06:37.We want to create a space where people can come and enjoy and take

:06:37. > :06:41.in the atmosphere and see the wildlife, it is a wonderful place,

:06:41. > :06:46.one of the best natural areas. want to show people that wetlands

:06:46. > :06:50.are worth preserving. It will give people unrivalled views of rare

:06:51. > :06:56.birds like this, the bittern and marsh harrier. New viewing domes

:06:56. > :07:01.will give people a chance to get face-to-face with lizards and small

:07:02. > :07:05.mammals. Inside, wildlife educational material. Outside, it

:07:05. > :07:10.will be in keeping with the surroundings. It has been designed

:07:11. > :07:16.to fit into the landscape. You will not be able to see much of it at

:07:16. > :07:23.all. The roof will become a habitat for the wildlife. We will design it

:07:23. > :07:29.so that reptiles can start living here. The centre replaces a small

:07:29. > :07:35.bird hide at the pond and building it has not come cheap. It will cost

:07:35. > :07:37.130,000, paid for from grants from the tourism develop and fund and the

:07:37. > :07:44.Blue Water Project, which is committed to helping the National

:07:44. > :07:51.trust the jersey restore wetlands. We started three years ago. We got

:07:51. > :07:57.to know it a bit, we got volunteer groups down here. When the idea came

:07:57. > :08:03.up of turning the little bird hide into the wetland Centre, we were

:08:03. > :08:08.fully behind it and keen to support it. While building work is underway,

:08:08. > :08:14.reptiles and small mammals have been re-homed, so they do not come to any

:08:14. > :08:23.harm. It is hoped it will be open in October. A free centre for locals

:08:23. > :08:29.and tourists to enjoy and learn about the rich wildlife.

:08:30. > :08:33.Jersey's Henry Cavill, playing Superman in Man of Steel, has a busy

:08:33. > :08:38.week of red carpet appearances. Last night, he was in New York for the

:08:38. > :08:43.world premiere of the film, and it is the UK and European premiere

:08:43. > :08:47.tomorrow. On Friday, he will be at the premiere in jersey, the island

:08:47. > :08:55.where he grew up and where his acting career began on the school

:08:55. > :08:58.stage. There are flashing images in the report.

:08:59. > :09:04.Representing Jersey on the red carpet, at last nights world

:09:04. > :09:14.premiere of man of steel in New York, it was all about the island's

:09:14. > :09:23.

:09:23. > :09:26.Henry Cavill, the first non-American What do you think this might --?

:09:26. > :09:36.was in Jersey that he first showed off his acting skills. This is him

:09:36. > :09:40.aged seven. He is starring in a play at his first school, Saint Michaels.

:09:40. > :09:48.Years later, in the same hall, we met the Next Generation of budding

:09:48. > :09:58.stars. It is exciting because he used to come here at this school. It

:09:58. > :09:59.

:09:59. > :10:05.is amazing to hear that Superman, or Henry, does act out a Superman.

:10:05. > :10:10.is exciting to go to school with Superman. They are a bit

:10:10. > :10:15.flabbergasted, as we all are. see what happens. They do not have

:10:15. > :10:20.any idea of what a Hollywood giant is all about, so they will see him

:10:20. > :10:24.on the screen and think, that could be me. He reeled the all over the

:10:24. > :10:28.world's media, with the UK premiere in Leicester Square tomorrow and the

:10:28. > :10:36.first showing of the film in St Helier on Friday, which he will

:10:36. > :10:43.attend with Russell Crowe and Amy Adams. But the road @ Michaels, he

:10:43. > :10:53.will be celebrated not as Superman but as Henry Cavill.

:10:53. > :10:57.

:10:57. > :11:00.We will be on the red carpet on St We keep the unsettled weather

:11:00. > :11:10.conditions for the rest of this week. For tomorrow, a windy day,

:11:10. > :11:17.with rain. You can see the weather front that brought us some rain. We

:11:17. > :11:21.have got weather fronts moving in. They will bring rain. For Thursday,

:11:21. > :11:27.they have cleared through, though we still have tight isobars, so it will

:11:27. > :11:33.be another windy day. Overnight, one or two showers, heavy rain at times

:11:33. > :11:41.through the night, but it will be a fairly mild night. The cloud is

:11:41. > :11:44.holding temperatures up. Tomorrow, further showers to come. The rain

:11:44. > :11:49.could turn heavy at times as we go through the day. Maybe one or two

:11:49. > :11:57.brighter moments, but grey and cloudy generally. Quite wet at

:11:57. > :12:07.times, but fairly mild. If we take a look at the coastal waters forecast

:12:07. > :12:27.

:12:27. > :12:35.we could see three or four feet. But with that wind, it will be quite

:12:35. > :12:42.choppy. For tomorrow, quite a wet and windy day. It is a bit dry and

:12:42. > :12:49.brighter in situ state. As we go towards the weekend, for Friday and

:12:49. > :12:55.into Saturday, more cloud again. If you showers are possible. The wind

:12:55. > :12:58.is easing slightly as we go into the weekend. Have a good evening.

:12:58. > :13:02.Hopefully the sun will shine for Superman. Heather Watson has won her

:13:02. > :13:10.first round match at the iconic classic in Birmingham.
