:00:12. > :00:17.Islands. Coming up tonight: Smoking laws reviewed - should we ban

:00:17. > :00:24.cigarettes in cars, parks and beaches to protect our children?

:00:24. > :00:28.am a smoker and I am dead against getting told where to smoke and when

:00:28. > :00:34.not to smoke. It is people's personal choices they've smoke in

:00:34. > :00:37.their cars but it would be better if they did not smoke in public places.

:00:38. > :00:41.Plus, the real Jersey Superman - the local athlete taking on the rest of

:00:41. > :00:51.the UK and winning! And it did rain on Alderney's Cavalcade, but a

:00:51. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :01:05.Should more be done to protect children from second-hand smoke?

:01:05. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:09.That's what Jersey's Health Department wants to know. It's

:01:09. > :01:12.launched a consultation on ideas including banning smoking in areas

:01:12. > :01:20.such as parks, shopping areas, beaches and even private cars. There

:01:20. > :01:24.are some graphic images of smoking in this report.

:01:24. > :01:27.While the number of people smoking in Jersey has fallen since the

:01:27. > :01:30.smoking ban was introduced six years ago, health bosses now want that

:01:30. > :01:34.figure to fall even further. They say those who are passive smoking

:01:34. > :01:37.like children and nonsmokers are at risk and they shouldn't be. We are

:01:37. > :01:41.looking and trying to understand what the public's views would be on

:01:41. > :01:45.smoking in cars, homes so we are not looking at saying legislation should

:01:45. > :01:50.be in place to stop people smoking in their own home but what can we do

:01:50. > :01:57.to support parents to understand the dangers of second-hand smoke? We now

:01:57. > :02:01.people often have role models. you smoke, the chemicals cause

:02:01. > :02:04.mutations in your body and mutations are how cancer starts.

:02:04. > :02:07.Around a fifth of people in Jersey smoke, with the habit blamed for

:02:07. > :02:14.higher-than-average rates of some cancers in Jersey compared to other

:02:14. > :02:20.areas of the UK. We have seen a big reduction in smoking since the 70s

:02:21. > :02:24.when 50% of men smoked and 40% of women, we are down to 20% now but we

:02:24. > :02:29.are still seeing significantly higher rates of illness and we need

:02:29. > :02:36.to go further. But is there enough anti-smoking legislation already in

:02:36. > :02:40.force? I am a smoker and I am dead against being told where to smoke.

:02:40. > :02:43.It is personal choice of people smoke in their cars but it would be

:02:43. > :02:49.nice if they did not smoke in public places.

:02:49. > :02:53.And for this politician, it is a measure too far. My stance is how

:02:53. > :02:58.will you please his? You will have the honorary police stomping around

:02:58. > :03:01.the parks and on the beach is trying to catch people smoking, or going

:03:01. > :03:06.and knocking on doors because you know there is a smoker who lives

:03:06. > :03:09.there? The policing of it, you have to look at the practicalities and I

:03:09. > :03:12.cannot see how you can police it at all.

:03:12. > :03:16.Smoking will always be an issue that will divide public opinion.

:03:16. > :03:19.Islanders now have three months to have their say and the findings will

:03:19. > :03:29.be presented to the States to see whether or not smoking legislation

:03:29. > :03:29.

:03:29. > :03:32.will be extended or whether the idea will be stubbed out.

:03:32. > :03:36.The cost of gas is rising in Guernsey and Jersey. From next

:03:36. > :03:40.Friday, the prices will rise by 3.5%. The company say the money will

:03:40. > :03:43.ensure supplies are more reliable after recent problems.

:03:43. > :03:46.There are calls for greater protection for a rare bat found in

:03:46. > :03:54.the Channel Islands. The grey long-eared bat is one of Britain's

:03:54. > :03:57.rarest mammals, but there are no laws to protect them in Guernsey.

:03:57. > :04:01.Roof spaces are a favourite home for the grey long-eared bat but they are

:04:01. > :04:05.pretty hard to spot. When they're not flying, they're about the size

:04:05. > :04:09.of your thumb and you can find them across the Channel Islands and here

:04:09. > :04:12.at Val de Mare. Summer is the best time to see the

:04:12. > :04:17.bats as they are out and about finding food, having just had their

:04:17. > :04:23.young. The best time to spot them in just after sunset in places such as

:04:23. > :04:26.here which is covered by trees. But scientists say there are only about

:04:26. > :04:29.1,000 left in Great Britain and they're in danger of disappearing.

:04:29. > :04:32.Their biggest predator is building development. And with no laws in

:04:32. > :04:40.Guernsey to stop people interfering with their roosts, the UK's Bat

:04:40. > :04:46.Conservation Society wants legislation to protect them. Last

:04:46. > :04:50.year I had a mother and a baby who had been found and I was able to

:04:50. > :04:53.rehouse the mother and baby. Had there been legislation, that may not

:04:53. > :04:56.have happened. But without legislation, how can

:04:56. > :05:02.homeowners be persuaded to live with bats which can have a bad reputation

:05:02. > :05:07.as dark, rather sinister animals? don't think there is any need to be

:05:07. > :05:17.scared of bats. There are all these myths about them getting tangled in

:05:17. > :05:18.

:05:18. > :05:23.your hair and spreading diseases. That is not the case. If you do have

:05:23. > :05:27.a bat roost, love it and cherish it. The grey long-eared bat has a life

:05:27. > :05:30.span of about 30 years, so may already be living in your house when

:05:30. > :05:38.you move in. What scientists and conservationists want are laws to

:05:38. > :05:42.make sure the bats don't then have to move out.

:05:42. > :05:45.Move over, Henry Cavill - there's a new Jersey Superman in town. Well,

:05:45. > :05:49.Daniel Halksworth is actually an Ironman - and he's beaten the best

:05:49. > :05:52.in Britain to take the Ironman UK crown. An amazing accomplishment for

:05:52. > :05:56.any triathlete, but Dan was just using yesterday's race to qualify

:05:56. > :05:59.for an even bigger challenge. An ultimate test in fitness. Over

:05:59. > :06:05.1,600 athletes from around the world battled it out in Bolton yesterday

:06:05. > :06:08.for the UK Ironman title. It's a gruelling race combining a 2.4-mile

:06:08. > :06:18.swim, followed by a 112-mile bike race, then a 26.2-mile run - without

:06:18. > :06:19.

:06:19. > :06:22.a break. But it was last year's winner, Jersey man Daniel

:06:22. > :06:25.Halksworth, who crossed the finish line first. Defending his title and

:06:25. > :06:28.beating his time by nearly ten minutes.

:06:28. > :06:32.Yeah, really, really good, very pleased just to come away and defend

:06:32. > :06:37.my title. It's just a special feeling. I wasn't really expecting

:06:37. > :06:40.to do it. I knew there was a couple of really good athletes there.

:06:40. > :06:44.only does Dan keep his UK Ironman title by beating team-mate Stephen

:06:44. > :06:50.Bayliss, but he hopes the winning points will help him qualify for the

:06:50. > :06:53.Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. I've been training really

:06:53. > :06:57.hard and financially, it's been tough this year and I've had to make

:06:57. > :07:01.some sacrifices because I want to get to Kona and the aim is to try

:07:01. > :07:06.and race again in two weeks to get points there and spend some time in

:07:06. > :07:16.mexico before Kona. So there's no rest for Dan as he competes for a

:07:16. > :07:18.

:07:18. > :07:21.place in the biggest Ironman test in the world on 12th October.

:07:21. > :07:24.You're watching the BBC in the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight

:07:24. > :07:29.with Justin and Natalie, celebrities join the fun at the international

:07:29. > :07:32.scouting jamboree. Alderney Week has kicked off the

:07:32. > :07:35.Channel Islands summer festival season in fine - albeit damp - style

:07:35. > :07:38.today. The Cavalcade battled on through the rain as did the crowds

:07:38. > :07:41.of determined islanders. And this year, Miss Alderney had a very

:07:41. > :07:50.special guest accompanying her - a familiar face, but one usually

:07:50. > :07:53.associated with a different island. Alderney Week attracts visitors from

:07:53. > :07:56.all over the world. Keen to experience this unique event at

:07:56. > :08:02.first hand, over 100 visitors came over from Jersey specially for

:08:02. > :08:06.Cavalcade Day. A shower at the start of the Carnival Parade put a bit of

:08:06. > :08:10.a dampener on things, but the rain soon cleared up leaving people to

:08:10. > :08:15.enjoy a pleasant but blustery afternoon. It's the 65th anniversary

:08:16. > :08:19.of Alderney Week and this year's theme is "two of a kind". The rest

:08:19. > :08:29.is left to the imagination of those who entered this year's Cavalcade

:08:29. > :08:31.Parade. Escorting Miss Jersey Battle of Flowers, Taye Le Monnier, in this

:08:31. > :08:40.year's Cavalcade Parade was Detective Sergeant Jim Bergerac of

:08:40. > :08:45.the Bureau Des Etrangers - otherwise known as John Nettles. She is

:08:45. > :08:52.beautiful but also very, very clever, much cleverer than I am. You

:08:52. > :08:57.are going to the... To study law? But in the meantime, you are a

:08:57. > :09:03.spectacular pageant lady. Cavalcade Day is also a big day for

:09:03. > :09:08.Miss Alderney. I love the idea of being an ambassador for Alderney and

:09:08. > :09:12.it is great all the support I get, it is wonderful. To find out what is

:09:12. > :09:16.in store for visitors for the rest of the week, I spoke to one of the

:09:16. > :09:23.driving forces behind Alderney Week. The rest of the week is full of the

:09:23. > :09:27.favourites, the daft raft race and the gala night, spectacular on

:09:27. > :09:31.Wednesday, that will be something. And because it is the 65th

:09:31. > :09:36.anniversary, Saturday night, our final night with the torches and a

:09:36. > :09:46.rather spectacular firework display. With the weather set to improve, it

:09:46. > :09:48.

:09:49. > :09:52.looks as if it will be another Week as the week goes on but let's

:09:52. > :10:02.see if the weather will improve. He is our other David with the

:10:02. > :10:02.

:10:02. > :10:06.it gets better this week over the Channel Islands and we may have some

:10:07. > :10:11.showers but it will be mainly dry and we will see some sunshine

:10:11. > :10:13.although generally it feels just that little bit fresher. This week

:10:14. > :10:22.is also Alderney Week and the weather looks pretty kind across

:10:22. > :10:25.Alderney. Largely dry around 18 or 19 Celsius and the winds mainly from

:10:25. > :10:34.the North or Northwest. They will be generally liked. As we move through

:10:34. > :10:39.this week, we will see an area of low pressure moving in, although it

:10:39. > :10:42.is fairly weak. By Wednesday, there is a bit more activity as an area of

:10:42. > :10:47.low pressure developed across the Bay of Biscay but nothing that will

:10:47. > :10:50.trouble us too much, you will see some medium or high level cloud but

:10:50. > :10:55.then towards the end of the week we may see some more persistent rain

:10:55. > :11:00.returned. Patchy cloud overnight tonight but overall, drive. Winds

:11:00. > :11:05.from the Northwest and they will drop with quite a breezy start to

:11:05. > :11:08.the night but they will drop overnight temperatures starting the

:11:08. > :11:12.day at around 15 Celsius. Patchy cloud and sunny spells sums up

:11:12. > :11:16.tomorrow, a threat of showers across the East but for most of us, it'll

:11:16. > :11:23.be a fine and dry day with winds becoming northerly and we will see

:11:23. > :11:33.temperatures anywhere from 18-20dC. The coastal waters forecast. There

:11:33. > :11:38.

:11:38. > :11:43.you go. At times of high water as not much for our service, up to

:11:43. > :11:48.around two feet, slightly choppy with the onshore breeze. Changes

:11:48. > :11:52.towards the end of the week, quite a lot of cloud around on Wednesday,
