:00:10. > :00:19.Jersey's Hospital applies to build two new theatres in its car park to

:00:19. > :00:24.cope with an ageing population. People over 65 are growing, they

:00:24. > :00:28.would double. They need more health care so there is a demand. Also, the

:00:28. > :00:38.worrying figures that reveal the number of homeless in Guernsey is on

:00:38. > :00:38.

:00:38. > :00:42.the rise. What have Doctor Who, and super Mario got in common? They are

:00:43. > :00:52.harnessing flower power. Join me later in the programme for all of

:00:53. > :01:00.

:01:00. > :01:03.temporary operating theatres at Jersey's General Hospital in a bid

:01:03. > :01:08.to meet increased demand. Health bosses say it will mean fewer people

:01:08. > :01:10.being flown off island for surgery. It comes as two theatres were closed

:01:10. > :01:16.today for maintenance work, meaning three operations were cancelled. Amy

:01:16. > :01:19.Harris reports. It's a resource that's vital to island life but the

:01:19. > :01:25.current operating theatres here at Jersey's General Hospital are now

:01:25. > :01:29.over 30 years old and are in need of urgent refurbishment. And this is

:01:29. > :01:32.the solution. Hospital bosses have come up with plans for two temporary

:01:32. > :01:41.theatres built here in the Gloucester Street car park while the

:01:41. > :01:44.existing theatres are bought up to date. The problem is we have to keep

:01:44. > :01:48.refurbishing theatres and maintaining them and if we have to

:01:48. > :01:52.shut theatres to maintain them we'll lose time in the operating theatre -

:01:52. > :01:55.if we built these two new ones we can then move the work to those new

:01:55. > :01:59.theatres while the maintenance and refurbishment are done on the ones

:01:59. > :02:03.we have presently and at the end of the day we get an extra two theatres

:02:03. > :02:08.to operate on. Those extra two theatres will mean there'll be six

:02:08. > :02:11.rather than the current four. It means fewer people will go off

:02:11. > :02:16.island for surgery and will meet increased demand with an ageing

:02:16. > :02:20.population in the island. The over 65s are growing, they're going to

:02:20. > :02:23.double by the year 2040 and the over 65s need more health care, so

:02:23. > :02:27.there's absolutely the demand. It will help our capacity and it's a

:02:27. > :02:30.forerunner to what the hospital might look like and we hope to in

:02:30. > :02:34.the next ten years have new designs for improving the whole of the

:02:34. > :02:42.hospital facility. The cost of this work isn't being disclosed but the

:02:42. > :02:45.ultimate decision now rests with planning officials. The number of

:02:45. > :02:48.homeless people in Guernsey is far higher than previously thought. An

:02:48. > :02:52.error in the way the Health and Social Services Department recorded

:02:52. > :03:00.the figures shows that more people are staying in the island's homeless

:03:00. > :03:03.shelter. Mike Wilkins reports. and some of the basic comforts in

:03:03. > :03:11.life. Homeless people in Guernsey have somewhere to go when they need

:03:11. > :03:15.a helping hand. This is Saint Julian 's House which provides

:03:15. > :03:20.accommodation for homeless people in Guernsey. The latest figures suggest

:03:20. > :03:24.that more people are staying here but the average stay for a resident

:03:24. > :03:34.is about three months, and the figures can be affected by those who

:03:34. > :03:37.

:03:37. > :03:42.stay a lot longer. As far as I am aware, the numbers have not changed.

:03:43. > :03:48.The numbers between 2010 and 2012 were in the region of 5000. You have

:03:48. > :03:50.to bear in mind we had five long-term residents in that time.

:03:50. > :03:55.The Health and Social Services Department counts one person,

:03:55. > :03:58.sleeping over for one night, as a stay. It said that last year there

:03:58. > :04:02.were more than eighteen hundred. It's now admitted that this was an

:04:02. > :04:05.error and the true figure for last year is more than five thousand.

:04:05. > :04:12.This represents around thirteen people staying every day for a year.

:04:12. > :04:22.At the moment, we have 11 people in residence at the hostel, so I would

:04:22. > :04:25.suggest that is a positive, as there are 28 beds available. The HSSD has

:04:25. > :04:30.admitted there was a clerical error leading to the initial homeless

:04:30. > :04:37.figures being wildly inaccurate. So now they know, it should help target

:04:37. > :04:41.resources and help for those who need it most. A plaque remembering

:04:41. > :04:43.three victims of the Holocaust has been torn from a wall in Guernsey. A

:04:43. > :04:49.1,000 reward has been offered by Crimestoppers for any information

:04:49. > :04:54.leading to the conviction of those responsible. The three Jewish women

:04:54. > :04:58.remembered on the plaque were deported to France in 1942. All

:04:58. > :05:02.three later died at the Auschwitz camp. The new boss of airline Flybe

:05:02. > :05:04.has launched a fresh review of the group as figures revealed another

:05:04. > :05:08.fall in UK passenger revenues. Former easyJet executive Saad Hammad

:05:08. > :05:14.is trying to restore the carrier to profit after annual losses soared to

:05:14. > :05:18.forty point seven million pounds earlier this year. The company said

:05:18. > :05:21.it's on target to deliver savings of 40 million this financial year.

:05:21. > :05:23.Earlier in the summer Flybe announced it was pulling out of

:05:23. > :05:33.serving London Gatwick to the Channel Islands because of rising

:05:33. > :05:39.costs. Latest figures reveal that the the cruise liner industry is

:05:39. > :05:42.worth 1.3 million pounds to the Guernsey economy. According to the

:05:42. > :05:47.Government, around 150,000 cruise ship passengers are due to come

:05:47. > :05:54.ashore this year. You are watching the BBC in the Channel Islands.

:05:54. > :06:04.Plenty more ahead. We will hear from the singer Sarah McQuaid who is

:06:04. > :06:08.

:06:08. > :06:11.about to embark on a tour of the UK and USA. Stay tuned for that. 28

:06:11. > :06:14.floral floats - tens of thousands of spectators - and hundreds of

:06:14. > :06:18.thousands, if not millions, of flowers, all under the blazing

:06:18. > :06:23.Jersey sun. Yes, it's Battle of Flowers time - and what a show they

:06:23. > :06:26.put on. And reigning over proceedings were a glamourous Miss

:06:26. > :06:29.Battle, 18-year-old Taye Le Monnier - and her Mr Battle - Coronation

:06:29. > :06:32.Street star Mikey North. The top prize, the prix d'honour, went to

:06:32. > :06:35.The Optimists Club with their spectacular 'Les Miserables' themed

:06:35. > :06:41.float. But the day was far from 'miserables' - as Clare Burton

:06:41. > :06:44.reports. The sun is out - the sky is blue - there's not a cloud to spoil

:06:44. > :06:48.the view. And hundreds of thousands of flowers are clinging onto their

:06:48. > :06:58.floats ready to give Jersey the show of its life. But is Jersey ready for

:06:58. > :07:29.

:07:29. > :07:37.float is the best is here. What are you looking for? We are marking on

:07:37. > :07:43.animation and costume. How much is down to the technical detail? And

:07:43. > :07:47.how much is down to enjoyment and dancing? It is down to the people on

:07:47. > :07:57.the floor interacting with the crowd. Just seeing them smiling and

:07:57. > :07:58.

:07:58. > :08:02.enjoying themselves. There have been a few changes this year - the floats

:08:02. > :08:05.have started in the arena and you can text in your favourite float for

:08:05. > :08:12.an audience award. But the crowds are still out in their thousands -

:08:12. > :08:20.so what keeps bringing them back? have been to Disneyland and this

:08:20. > :08:27.knocks it to bits. Our grandchildren live here and it looks amazing. We

:08:27. > :08:33.saw some on the way down. It's fantastic, yes. I like how all of

:08:33. > :08:40.the floats are done. It is pretty impressive. I saw the Jungle book

:08:41. > :08:50.down there. It is absolutely amazing. Amazing, all of the flowers

:08:51. > :08:56.

:08:56. > :09:02.stuck on, it must have taken hours. We are really looking forward to it.

:09:02. > :09:06.I am on the float with Mr and Mrs Battle. How you doing? Yes, it is

:09:06. > :09:16.good, I am really enjoying it. It is lovely to be up here and enjoy the

:09:16. > :09:22.atmosphere. What do you make of it? I have been saying all day how

:09:22. > :09:32.spectacular it it is, more spectacular than I ever imagined.

:09:32. > :09:55.

:09:55. > :10:00.For 15,000 people to turn up on such this us. Tell me what being a miss

:10:00. > :10:07.Battle means to you? It is the most amazing day of your life, you will

:10:07. > :10:14.always remember it. What advice do you have? Keep smiling because you

:10:14. > :10:24.never know when there is a camera on you. Is there any romance between Mr

:10:24. > :10:45.

:10:45. > :10:55.and Mrs Battle? Not that I know of! The top awards for the Battle of

:10:55. > :10:55.

:11:13. > :11:17.you. How you feeding question might get unemotional. These people are

:11:17. > :11:27.supposed to be miserable but they are looking very happy. How much

:11:27. > :11:33.

:12:00. > :12:10.be over for 2013 - but you can bet your bottom bluebell plans for

:12:10. > :12:13.

:12:35. > :12:41.atmosphere from You can see plenty of pictures from this year's parades

:12:41. > :12:51.on our Facebook site. If you were there, and took some snaps, we would

:12:51. > :12:57.love to see them too. Post them on our Facebook page. It was a sunny

:12:57. > :13:01.day today but will it continue to shine? Here is the forecast. After a

:13:01. > :13:08.reasonable day there is change in the air. It will produce some

:13:08. > :13:16.patchy, light rain. It will clear out of the way and it will turn

:13:17. > :13:24.pressure. There will be some sunshine during the day. The weather

:13:24. > :13:29.looks reasonably promising, never overly warm, 17 or 18 degrees. Fine

:13:29. > :13:34.on Saturday and some showers possible on Sunday, especially early

:13:34. > :13:40.in the day. This weather system is producing the change. It comes in

:13:40. > :13:44.later tonight and produces fresh conditions, slightly cooler air. We

:13:44. > :13:54.should have a reasonable afternoon tomorrow afternoon. A ridge of high

:13:54. > :13:55.

:13:55. > :13:59.pressure on Saturday. Again, that is moving quite fast. Let's look at

:13:59. > :14:07.that detail. We have some light rain coming into night and temperatures

:14:07. > :14:10.no lower than 15 degrees. The winds will feel fresh as well. Then those

:14:10. > :14:16.winds change direction and early rain will clear out of the way,

:14:16. > :14:21.although there will be patchy cloud around, spoiling the sunshine.

:14:21. > :14:27.Temperatures of between 18 and 20 degrees and westerly winds. That is

:14:27. > :14:31.the forecast for coastal waters. It the forecast for coastal waters. It

:14:31. > :14:36.is mainly fair with good the forecast for coastal waters. It

:14:36. > :14:40.is mainly fair with good And for our servers, a bit on the choppy side at

:14:40. > :14:50.two or three feet. For the Moonlight Parade, it looks like it will be
