:00:20. > :00:25.bus bosses slapped a decision... There are a lot of people who have

:00:25. > :00:32.hospital appointments and have to get to work. To hold the island to

:00:32. > :00:41.ransom in this way is not good. Use local or lose it. Islanders are

:00:41. > :00:46.warned they must buy more home-grown produce if they are to protect jobs.

:00:46. > :00:56.From pumpkins to past times, we are at Guernsey's West Show as it

:00:56. > :01:01.

:01:01. > :01:04.bus drivers will strike for five days this month in a bid to get a

:01:04. > :01:08.sacked colleague reinstated. Workers will walk out for two days from next

:01:08. > :01:12.Thursday and for three days from Tuesday August 27. Tonight, bosses

:01:12. > :01:21.at Liberty Bus have called the move a slap in the face to passengers.

:01:21. > :01:26.Amy Harris reports. It is the busiest time of the year

:01:26. > :01:28.for the bus service, used every day by hundreds of islanders and

:01:29. > :01:33.tourists alike. But come next Thursday, there'll be no departures

:01:33. > :01:39.or arrivals. 71 workers are walking out twice in the next two weeks for

:01:39. > :01:42.a total of five days to get a sacked colleague reinstated. The driver was

:01:42. > :01:51.dismissed and convicted of driving without due care and attention after

:01:51. > :01:57.an accident earlier this year, when a passenger was injured. We feel

:01:57. > :02:00.that the driver was unfairly dismissed, we feel that health and

:02:00. > :02:05.safety processes words put in place by the company which resulted in the

:02:05. > :02:12.accident. They have a duty of care to not only the passenger, but also

:02:12. > :02:16.to the driver and they failed. five-day strike over one worker has

:02:16. > :02:23.the potential to affect hundreds, if not thousands, of other islanders

:02:23. > :02:29.and tourists. Is there any sympathy among passengers? There's always

:02:29. > :02:35.sympathy to be had. They probably have a case, do they have to go this

:02:35. > :02:40.far? I think they must feel very strongly and they must stick

:02:40. > :02:43.together as a union and maybe we ought to respect that. I hope they

:02:43. > :02:50.have a good reason to strike as there are a lot of tourists and they

:02:50. > :02:57.are needed. The operator insists it can keep the island moving. To hold

:02:57. > :03:01.the island to ransom in this way, it is not good. We're trying to put on

:03:01. > :03:05.as many services as we can, obviously there are only one third

:03:05. > :03:11.of the workforce who have voted for the strike, so we are hopeful that a

:03:11. > :03:14.lot of the workforce will still wants to work. And the Government's

:03:14. > :03:20.department has also condemned the move as talks are still ongoing

:03:20. > :03:27.about the driver involved. We think they have overreacted, the driver in

:03:27. > :03:33.question's case is still subject to a tribunal and until it is

:03:33. > :03:36.concluded, there is no action to take as far as we are concerned. Is

:03:36. > :03:45.less than a year since the company took over and this is the second

:03:45. > :03:49.time that strike action has been used. Passengers will be hoping that

:03:49. > :03:52.relations improve by next Thursday. Islanders need to buy more

:03:52. > :03:56.home-grown produce to protect local jobs - that's the warning tonight

:03:56. > :03:59.from some growers and retailers as 80 jobs are axed at two Channel

:03:59. > :04:02.Island bakeries. Yesterday, we broke the news that Warry's in Guernsey

:04:02. > :04:12.and the CI Bakery in Jersey will shut down because they're losing out

:04:12. > :04:13.

:04:13. > :04:20.to goods imported from the UK. Ripe and ready, within hours of coming

:04:20. > :04:24.out of the soil, these courgettes will be on shop shelves. In this

:04:24. > :04:28.climate, when things are tight, people are looking at price and it

:04:28. > :04:31.is difficult to produce quality products which generally speaking

:04:31. > :04:36.Jersey products are at a price that is the same as commodities coming

:04:36. > :04:44.from all over the world. That means food produced here can come at a

:04:44. > :04:48.premium. There is a cost of living here. The economies of scale don't

:04:48. > :04:52.exist as they would with multiple suppliers in the UK. We believe the

:04:52. > :05:00.quality of the local purchase, there is a price to pay cut that, and

:05:00. > :05:03.consumers should be mindful of that. But we have two offer choice.

:05:03. > :05:09.competition from overseas and the high cost of production that has

:05:09. > :05:14.caused the closure of the Channel Islands Bakery. With more foreign

:05:14. > :05:24.food on our shelves, all we ask shoppers if they care? You have been

:05:24. > :05:42.

:05:42. > :05:47.dairies have that monopoly is that they are protected by law. It is a

:05:47. > :05:54.rare and endangered breed and we are protecting the biodiversity of the

:05:54. > :05:57.island. That way, we can ban imports and comply with EU law. While dairy

:05:57. > :06:00.farmers can relax, others will remain at the mercy of the market.

:06:00. > :06:02.Well, Senator Alan McLean is Jersey's Economic Development

:06:02. > :06:08.Minister, so his brief includes helping promote local business and

:06:08. > :06:11.local jobs. He joined me earlier and I began by asking him if the States

:06:11. > :06:21.should look to ban the importation of other items, like they do with

:06:21. > :06:24.

:06:24. > :06:28.milk, to protect more locally made Milk is a different story and I

:06:28. > :06:32.think we can keep that separate. Generally, Government and

:06:32. > :06:37.protectionism is not a good mood. Consumers need choice and they need

:06:37. > :06:40.to have cost effective pricing. We need to get that balance and the

:06:40. > :06:50.bounce is obviously difficult to achieve. How do you strike that

:06:50. > :06:52.

:06:52. > :06:55.balance? I think the result of the bakery failing suggest that

:06:55. > :06:59.consumers won't supporting the business, they found the product too

:06:59. > :07:02.expensive and they were buying cheap imports. The market will determine

:07:02. > :07:06.which is right and which is wrong and I think Government

:07:06. > :07:12.intervention, generally speaking, is something we should avoid. What is

:07:12. > :07:20.your message to islanders who are employed in this sector? I think

:07:20. > :07:24.there is a strong future. There are new brands and new... Unfortunately,

:07:24. > :07:29.that company couldn't make this brand work. But otherwise I think

:07:29. > :07:33.there is a strong future in retail. The Guernsey branch of the

:07:33. > :07:38.Co-operative Bank is to close by the end of this year. 11 people work

:07:38. > :07:41.there. Almost 40 Co-op Bank branches in the UK have been closed already.

:07:41. > :07:51.A spokesman says customers shouldn't be concerned and mortgages will be

:07:51. > :07:51.

:07:51. > :07:59.honoured. It is one of the main fixtures in Guernsey's calendar and

:07:59. > :08:03.it is 100 years old this year. Here's what the West Show was like.

:08:03. > :08:08.Around 10,000 visitors are expected over the next few days. Mike Wilkins

:08:08. > :08:12.has been to find out what they can expect. When we think of the summer

:08:12. > :08:16.shows, we think of the pageants and the funfairs and the entertainment.

:08:16. > :08:21.But the serious business of judging the produce is what it is about and

:08:21. > :08:25.it started here 100 years ago. Inside, we have the organisers of

:08:25. > :08:33.this, the hundredth anniversary of West Show.

:08:33. > :08:38.How does it feel to be organising such an event? We are so lucky that

:08:38. > :08:41.the event has gone on for so long. To think, in 1913, if they were

:08:41. > :08:50.alive now and knew that we were still doing the same traditions, I

:08:50. > :08:55.think it would be thrilled. What about you? My earliest memories are

:08:56. > :09:02.putting the daughter in and now I am the Treasurer. John, what would you

:09:02. > :09:07.say is the magic of this event? magic is that it carries on year by

:09:07. > :09:12.year, showing that the old Guernsey traditions are still going. You just

:09:12. > :09:17.have to look around at all of this produce, the hours of work, it is

:09:17. > :09:21.all here. This is the 100th anniversary, how I you marking it?

:09:21. > :09:27.We are marking it by putting on massive amounts of entertainment.

:09:27. > :09:31.have beer tents, we have fantastic entertainment on, we have made a

:09:31. > :09:36.special centenary programme that is on sale that details the history of

:09:36. > :09:41.the show and tells you what is going on. It is all going to happen. It is

:09:41. > :09:46.going to be amazing. It is going to be a big party for the whole

:09:46. > :09:56.island, please come and support us. Thousands of people are expected to

:09:56. > :10:01.

:10:01. > :10:05.attend over the next day or so and well today and I think tomorrow

:10:05. > :10:10.promises even higher temperatures and still relatively dry, too. There

:10:10. > :10:15.is a bit of a change coming as we move through into Friday, but the

:10:15. > :10:19.moment, after a cloudy start it is a humid feel and there are some warm

:10:19. > :10:22.sunshine, especially from late morning. We still have this finger

:10:22. > :10:25.of high-pressure covering us, it is a bit weaker by the time they get to

:10:25. > :10:35.the middle of the day tomorrow, but not until we get into the small

:10:35. > :10:37.

:10:37. > :10:40.hours of Friday before we see that cold front comes in. It looks at

:10:40. > :10:43.could be around for a good part of the day, generating brain and

:10:43. > :10:46.keeping us cloudy. Overnight, the cloud will break at times, but I

:10:46. > :10:48.think it'll fill in by the morning and even a spit of drizzle may be in

:10:48. > :10:51.the wind. Temperatures shouldn't be any lower than 15 or 16 Celsius.

:10:51. > :10:57.After a grey start, it will brighten up and as they go into the

:10:57. > :11:04.afternoon, they'll be some lengthy spells of sunshine, possibly 25

:11:04. > :11:10.Celsius. The winds are south-westerly, mainly fair with

:11:10. > :11:15.good visibility. Times of high water at Saint Helena is at midnight 09

:11:15. > :11:20.and 1244 and around 30 024 Saint Peter Port. Not much for the

:11:20. > :11:25.surface, there is a bit of a swell, up to three feet is the best we can

:11:25. > :11:28.expect. As for the outlook, on Friday, we will have thicker cloud

:11:28. > :11:36.and potentially some outbreaks of light rain ordure is not. We won't

:11:36. > :11:41.be improving into much later into the day. After a bright start on

:11:41. > :11:48.Saturday, it clouds over and we will see some more persistent rain

:11:48. > :11:53.arriving and it could be quite a wet afternoon. But all of that will blow
