:00:00. > :00:08.Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel six. On BBC

:00:09. > :00:13.Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Coming up on tonight's

:00:14. > :00:17.programme. Taking flight. Flybe pulls out of Jersey and Guernsey

:00:18. > :00:19.with dozens of job losses. Plus getting creative. Top politicians

:00:20. > :00:27.discuss getting young people into work. It's about building

:00:28. > :00:33.relationships. It's about speaking to people who are operating in that

:00:34. > :00:38.sector. And singing, dancing and a spot of head`shaving for Pudsey! We

:00:39. > :00:48.join all the fun of Children in Need.

:00:49. > :00:54.Flybe has announced it's closing its bases in Guernsey and Jersey with

:00:55. > :00:58.the loss of nearly 50 jobs. It will mean no planes or people will be

:00:59. > :01:01.based in the islands from March next year. The airline hasn't yet

:01:02. > :01:04.clarified what impact there will be on flights. Earlier this year they

:01:05. > :01:08.announced they would stop all flights to Gatwick. Mike Wilkins

:01:09. > :01:13.reports. Despite Flybe's profits increasing, staff numbers will soon

:01:14. > :01:18.be falling. Nationally, the company are cutting 500 jobs, nearly 200 of

:01:19. > :01:22.them are thought to be pilots. Locally, the bases in Guernsey and

:01:23. > :01:25.Jersey will close at the end of March. 35 jobs will be axed in

:01:26. > :01:48.Jersey and 12 in Guernsey. Today the Pilots' union said it's

:01:49. > :01:58.still unclear how island routes will be affected. What I think is that

:01:59. > :02:04.the islands will be covered. I guess, from Southampton and some of

:02:05. > :02:10.the other areas that Flybe fly to, there will be services but, quite

:02:11. > :02:13.what time of day they go, and how frequent, is a matter for the

:02:14. > :02:16.company. Today there is no news on how routes will be affected by this

:02:17. > :02:19.latest announcement. But with what's thought to be nearly 200 fewer

:02:20. > :02:27.pilots, the airline will struggle to service its current schedule. A UK

:02:28. > :02:31.Cabinet Minister has pledged to look again at LVCR in a bid to get

:02:32. > :02:34.islanders back into work. Teresa Villiers was speaking at a

:02:35. > :02:36.conference held in the Channel Islands this week to about youth

:02:37. > :02:40.unemployment. It's the 21st such meeting of the British Irish Council

:02:41. > :02:43.but can these high`level talks help tackle the high level of joblessness

:02:44. > :02:47.among young people in Jersey in Guernsey? Nine political

:02:48. > :02:54.heavyweights bashing around ideas for two days about getting young

:02:55. > :03:03.people working. No knock`out result. But a lot of familiar mood music.

:03:04. > :03:05.The challenges that we face are common across all administrations.

:03:06. > :03:09.They are certainly different in scale but youth unemployment is

:03:10. > :03:13.issue for all of us. Cautiously optimistic was that term around the

:03:14. > :03:17.table today about the economic prospects for the future. But on the

:03:18. > :03:23.big economic issues where Britain could help the Channel Islands, no

:03:24. > :03:27.promises. A big employer in the Channel Islands was our fulfilment

:03:28. > :03:32.industry and your government removed the VAT relief which made it

:03:33. > :03:38.possible. Guernsey is now trying to restore it. Is your government

:03:39. > :03:41.perceptive to that? We will consider seriously any proposal put to us,

:03:42. > :03:48.offering tax advantages, reductions, it's difficult. But I will take on

:03:49. > :03:53.board what you say, and I suppose it will be public considered by the

:03:54. > :03:59.Treasury. So no commitment today for young people but talks have been

:04:00. > :04:05.about jobs for the future in creative industries such as film,

:04:06. > :04:08.television and digital media. It's about building relationships,

:04:09. > :04:15.speaking to people who are operating in that sector. We have got our

:04:16. > :04:19.fibre`optic roll`out, which willing carriage IVT creativity. But it's

:04:20. > :04:24.also about treating traditional industries and make sure they are

:04:25. > :04:29.supported and move into the future. This is the 21st meeting of the

:04:30. > :04:32.British Irish Council. It will take some very creative thinking and

:04:33. > :04:37.decisive action to put any of the shared ideas into policy and

:04:38. > :04:41.practice. An inquest into the death of a cyclist has called for better

:04:42. > :04:45.signage on the road. Paul Channing was killed after coming off his bike

:04:46. > :04:48.and falling under a car on Beaumont Hill in May. Witnesses told the

:04:49. > :04:51.hearing he wouldn't have known there was traffic coming up on a bend. The

:04:52. > :04:57.Deputy Viscount is asking the authorities to look at putting up

:04:58. > :05:00.warning signs on the road. The new day care centre at Jersey Hospice is

:05:01. > :05:04.open. The ?2 million building at Clarkson House has a coffee shop,

:05:05. > :05:07.garden, an arts and crafts area, lounge and treatment rooms. It's

:05:08. > :05:10.called the King's Centre, as a tribute to to the late Jurat Jean

:05:11. > :05:22.King, who was a founder of the charity. We have massage therapy. A

:05:23. > :05:30.hairdresser. What else? Lots of food! Lots of tea and coffee and

:05:31. > :05:36.lunch! It's wonderful. Now, have you got that Friday feeling? Thousands

:05:37. > :05:40.of people around our islands who have spent the day putting the fun

:05:41. > :05:41.into fundraising for Children in Need. We've seen sponsored

:05:42. > :05:44.leg`waxes, record`breaking hot`dog`eating. Street circus acts

:05:45. > :05:48.and lots of singing and dancing around with the famous bear. In a

:05:49. > :05:53.moment, the Jersey highlights, but first Penny Elderfield has a round

:05:54. > :06:04.up from Guernsey. Not the healthiest start to the day, but a tasty one.

:06:05. > :06:13.And helping to fill up the bucket for children in need. A bit of a

:06:14. > :06:17.tradition to come down here and support Children in Need. It's a

:06:18. > :06:20.great cause. The guys have been here early this morning so it is a quick

:06:21. > :06:24.break before they go back to work. They always do they rolls down here

:06:25. > :06:31.for Children in Need, so it's a diversion before work. I've always

:06:32. > :06:34.supported BBC Children in Need. In the old days, I used to answer the

:06:35. > :06:42.phones, which was good fun. And fun was really the word of the day. With

:06:43. > :06:50.schools around the island in party mode.

:06:51. > :07:02.With Malteser eating competitions. VIP appearances. And some crazy

:07:03. > :07:08.hairstyles. We crimped it last night and then we backcombed it this

:07:09. > :07:15.morning and dyed it. Do you like having crazy hair at school? Yes,

:07:16. > :07:17.it's fun and unusual, too. From crazy hair. To no hair. And some

:07:18. > :07:32.more painful ways of raising cash. When we got to the back of the legs,

:07:33. > :07:37.it started hurting so I don't think I will do it again. First and last,

:07:38. > :07:42.I think. I was in a meeting and I had been put up by eight people

:07:43. > :07:47.saying, thank you bring much for doing it, and I was not in a

:07:48. > :07:48.position to say no. So lots of ways of raising, hopefully, a lot of

:07:49. > :08:03.money for Children in Need. Meanwhile, in Jersey. We're doing a

:08:04. > :08:06.cake sale, so the children are making cakes all week and we are

:08:07. > :08:12.ringing the teddy bears for a picnic and we have learned the Pudsey song.

:08:13. > :08:16.We tried to tell them what Pudsey does to raise money for children not

:08:17. > :08:20.as fortunate as them, and some children don't have lovely toys to

:08:21. > :08:25.play with, so they are excited about helping children not as well off as

:08:26. > :08:31.them. BBC Jersey took over the radio station today, and attempted a hot

:08:32. > :08:42.dog eating contest. And, not very successfully. The BBC team had a go

:08:43. > :08:50.at slack lining, with passers`by giving a donation. Local businesses

:08:51. > :09:01.were busy raising money in their own way. The branch staff have had a

:09:02. > :09:06.fantastic time organising verse, and really taking part, they have

:09:07. > :09:11.dressed up as children, and all sorts of guises. They have been

:09:12. > :09:15.baking cakes to sell to the clients. Donations for a raffle, and we have

:09:16. > :09:21.had a baby competition in respect of spot the baby in the photos. All day

:09:22. > :09:26.we have been inviting members to do a onesie work`out and throughout the

:09:27. > :09:36.day, every hour, we have selected a different challenge. Yes, I have had

:09:37. > :09:41.to come pleat all of them so far, so that's been pretty tiring but fun,

:09:42. > :09:47.as well `` complete. A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far.

:09:48. > :09:51.You really are heroes. Well done to everyone who was given the time and

:09:52. > :09:53.money for Children in Need. Much more coming up later. Time now for a

:09:54. > :10:01.look at the weather. Good evening. Whatever you are

:10:02. > :10:07.doing, I think the weather will be relatively kind across the island.

:10:08. > :10:12.There is a chance of a fairly low temperature overnight tonight. The

:10:13. > :10:15.wind will fall light and the temperatures will be well into

:10:16. > :10:19.single figures, but it gives us a reasonable day tomorrow. Fine and

:10:20. > :10:23.dry and cloudy at times. Briefly some sunshine in the middle of the

:10:24. > :10:28.day. Some cloud floating past in the last couple of hours, but, for the

:10:29. > :10:32.most part, enough clear sky tonight to get the temperature is fairly

:10:33. > :10:36.low. High pressure in charge, not changing through the weekend. This

:10:37. > :10:41.weather system will bring rain but not until Monday before it gets to

:10:42. > :10:45.us. It's across the Midlands on Sunday, and then slowly sinking

:10:46. > :10:48.southwards during Sunday night and Monday. Overnight tonight, we have a

:10:49. > :10:55.rift north`easterly breeze which will have the temperatures

:10:56. > :11:02.plummeting to 5`6. Easterly wind tomorrow. Fairly light. A lot of

:11:03. > :11:09.cloud. Briefly in the day, sunny spells but it won't last. A lighter

:11:10. > :11:18.wind than recently. 11 degrees, the maximum temperature. There is the

:11:19. > :11:30.coastal waters forecast. Times of high water.

:11:31. > :11:36.Now let's look further ahead because there is a big change coming our way

:11:37. > :11:39.as we move into next week. Sunday, rather cloudy and a similar weather

:11:40. > :11:45.pattern. Monday, cloudy without rakes of rain much later in the day

:11:46. > :11:51.and then showers developing on Tuesday. And from Tuesday, very much

:11:52. > :11:55.colder air arriving and we could see that a frost developing on Tuesday

:11:56. > :11:59.and Wednesday. Have a nice weekend. That's it from the BBC in the

:12:00. > :12:05.Channel Islands. Time to join our Spotlight colleagues for their

:12:06. > :12:16.Children in Need special. . Here's James and Rebecca.

:12:17. > :12:22.studio tonight. It is time to start the count down to this evening's

:12:23. > :12:25.fundraising Party For Pudsey. Rebecca Will is in Falmouth along

:12:26. > :12:30.with BBC Radio Cornwall's James Churchfield.

:12:31. > :12:32.Welcome to the National Maritime Museum borrower Party For Pudsey. So

:12:33. > :12:39.many people gathered for this wonderful occasion. The party has

:12:40. > :12:44.already started. There are hundreds of people with us. Let us give you a

:12:45. > :12:49.quick tour of what will be your home for the next few hours. Pudsey is

:12:50. > :12:53.already making himself at home. You can see some of the people that have

:12:54. > :13:07.come along to the party. Ie looking forward to it? `` are you looking

:13:08. > :13:11.forward to it? ALL: Yes! We have our fundraisers here. People

:13:12. > :13:16.who have been doing amazing things. We will hear from some of them a

:13:17. > :13:22.little bit later on. And we have very amazing Children In Need

:13:23. > :13:26.choir. 200 voices will be joining with over 1500 other singers in the

:13:27. > :13:31.main Children In Need programmes singing a very special song. We have

:13:32. > :13:37.heard it in rehearsal this afternoon. We will have a taster,

:13:38. > :13:40.you will not want to miss it. You have been filling out all of the

:13:41. > :13:46.stops fundraising right across the region. Some wonderful and wacky

:13:47. > :13:54.things have been happening. Let us find out what you have been doing

:13:55. > :13:58.across the South West. It is fortunate that we have Children In

:13:59. > :14:13.Need day today, so I can wear my usual attire!

:14:14. > :14:53.I cannot quite believe I am doing this. This is crazy! # Everybody's

:14:54. > :15:02.got a dream. # What do you say, are we making history? # We are only

:15:03. > :15:17.young is we seize the night. # Tonight we own the night. # Tonight

:15:18. > :15:18.we own the night. Writes now she is raising money by

:15:19. > :15:43.being a goalkeeper for charity. # I got something to say.

:15:44. > :15:51.# May your hearts be full of your dreams tonight.

:15:52. > :16:02.# May we sing and dance tiil we lose our minds.

:16:03. > :16:16.# We are only young if we seize the night, tonight we own the night.

:16:17. > :16:25.It's all four a good cause, isn't it!

:16:26. > :16:29.Every year we are astounded by the links that you go to to raise money

:16:30. > :16:33.for children in need. To everyone, we give you a very hearty thank you.

:16:34. > :16:37.If you have raised money, if you have given money. It really will

:16:38. > :16:45.make a difference to the lives of children here in the South West.

:16:46. > :16:53.None more so than the call. She uses a children's hospice in the region.

:16:54. > :17:07.Her mum tells us the story. Nicole is born `` Nicole was born as

:17:08. > :17:14.a normal child, but then we discovered she had a rear syndrome.

:17:15. > :17:20.She is just Nicole. She just does not speak. The most often question I

:17:21. > :17:25.get is, how do you know when she is annoyed? You just know. She does not

:17:26. > :17:33.really display pane, she does not smile, but we just embrace her.

:17:34. > :17:39.She's our little girl and we all love her. All of the children love

:17:40. > :17:43.her. People do not realise that nobody else can look after these

:17:44. > :17:48.children. They have got such specific needs. Everything has to be

:17:49. > :17:53.done right, there is no room for errors. This is what these places

:17:54. > :18:00.are for. There is nobody else they are out of ours who you can phone to

:18:01. > :18:05.say, I am in a mess. Can you help? Of course we can help. The children

:18:06. > :18:09.think it is a big holiday once they get here. The sibling team are

:18:10. > :18:15.brilliant. You cannot ask for a better people. She is treated as a

:18:16. > :18:19.normal person here. None of the children staying at her, and it is

:18:20. > :18:26.nice to see the siblings all playing together. And they are all relaxed.

:18:27. > :18:36.They are all happy. But ultimately you know that it is not going to

:18:37. > :18:41.have a happy ending. So we now know we can come here with her child when

:18:42. > :18:46.that happens. When that happens, we can come here, spend our last time

:18:47. > :18:51.together in a place that is happy and with the sibling team, most

:18:52. > :18:55.importantly, that can support the call's siblings, because they are

:18:56. > :19:00.the most important. `` Nicole's siblings. Getting them to deal with

:19:01. > :19:09.what is going to happen. That reason alone is why these places should be

:19:10. > :19:14.here. I think they are amazing places because when you come in you

:19:15. > :19:20.do not know that any of that is there, you do not know that sad is

:19:21. > :19:25.happening here. People always say, can we help you? This is how you can

:19:26. > :19:34.help us. You can donate. That is how you can help. That is the difference

:19:35. > :19:38.your fundraising makes for Children In Need, helping people like

:19:39. > :19:44.Nicole's family, making a real difference to their lives. We have

:19:45. > :19:50.some checks here, plenty of people out and about. Where are you from

:19:51. > :20:07.and what have you done? We are dressed up in Wix, `` in wigs and

:20:08. > :20:17.Wellington boots. ?868.11. How did you read that? We had peak sales,

:20:18. > :20:33.face painting. We also had the staff in stocks. I bet that was fun! This

:20:34. > :20:45.is 1500 p from B and Q in Cornwall. We have had raffles, cake sales, all

:20:46. > :20:55.of the staff in fancy dress. You get depressed Pudsey's stomach. Nothing

:20:56. > :21:00.has happened! Never mind. Well done to everybody, fabulous effort for

:21:01. > :21:03.fundraising for Children In Need. I'm here with very amazing

:21:04. > :21:11.children's choir. You looking forward to your singing this

:21:12. > :21:14.evening? I probably better not get them to scream to lately because

:21:15. > :21:20.they will lose their voices. Is this your first time saying with a big

:21:21. > :21:26.choir like this? It is one of my first time is doing this live on TV.

:21:27. > :21:29.How much preparation has there been? There have been a lot of

:21:30. > :21:37.rehearsals today, it has been quite tough. But it is all for a good

:21:38. > :21:42.cause. What is it been due to be taking part? It is a really good

:21:43. > :21:48.cause and I am so pleased to be supporting it. I am so glad that it

:21:49. > :21:53.is going to be on TV. Last year it was the third highest point that

:21:54. > :22:02.people paid money out. You will really make a difference, I am sure.

:22:03. > :22:05.How does it make you feel to be here with so many young people? It makes

:22:06. > :22:12.me really happy that we may be helping lots of people. Did you have

:22:13. > :22:21.to be coerced into taking part, as a boy? I really wanted to do it,

:22:22. > :22:25.because I love singing. What does it mean to you to take part? It means a

:22:26. > :22:31.lot to me, because I am really excited. It really is something very

:22:32. > :22:34.special. Make sure you join us for that. Now back to the studio to take

:22:35. > :22:52.a look at the weather. I did make a promise to Pudsey that

:22:53. > :22:58.I would start with Barmouth. `` Falmouth. Although we have a cover

:22:59. > :23:00.of cloud now, by midnight or just after we're going to get

:23:01. > :23:05.temperatures fairly close to freezing. For the next few days we

:23:06. > :23:09.have a fairly quiet spell of weather, it is mainly dry. Some

:23:10. > :23:13.frost and fog around and then turning very much colder next week.

:23:14. > :23:17.Quite a big change for those drops in temperatures. There is the

:23:18. > :23:24.satellite picture from earlier today. That cloud will thin and

:23:25. > :23:29.break earlier today. `` later on. For much of the weekend, we do have

:23:30. > :23:33.a weather system that comes in from the north`west, but that would be a

:23:34. > :23:40.slow progress towards us. Not really arriving until probably overnight

:23:41. > :23:47.and into Monday. He wrote the details. A lot of clear sky to the

:23:48. > :24:01.Easter bus. `` a lot of clear sky to the east of us. PHONE RINGS.

:24:02. > :24:06.I am very sorry, it is my phone. Pudsey, I am doing a live broadcast.

:24:07. > :24:12.Yes, but the book bit silly. I did promise. OK. I made Pudsey a

:24:13. > :24:19.promise, so I'm going to have to wear them. That's better, isn't it?

:24:20. > :24:24.Anyway. Let us get on with the forecast. I mention the clearing

:24:25. > :24:30.skies. They will get clearer later, as a result it will be cold. Quite

:24:31. > :24:36.widespread tonight. It will develop across parts of East Devon. The

:24:37. > :24:39.source of temperatures we can expect a freebie close to freezing for most

:24:40. > :24:46.of the South of England. Through the day tomorrow, a lot of sunshine.

:24:47. > :24:50.Gradually clouding over as the cloud comes and later in the afternoon.

:24:51. > :24:59.That means that we will probably not see a frost tonight, but we will see

:25:00. > :25:11.temperatures of ten or 11 degrees. They are quite fetching, and they!

:25:12. > :25:26.He wrote the times of high water. `` you are. The winds are late through

:25:27. > :25:30.this weekend. Expect a breeze becoming variable. Mainly fear

:25:31. > :25:43.conditions and generally good visibility out to sea. They are

:25:44. > :25:48.laughing your socks off! Let us look at the forecast into the start of

:25:49. > :25:52.next week. A lot of clout that may produce some spots of rain. We are

:25:53. > :25:56.still into the relatively mild earbud look at the drop in

:25:57. > :26:06.temperatures into Tuesday. `` mild air. Let us go back to Falmouth and

:26:07. > :26:11.the National Maritime Museum. I like those years. Perhaps they

:26:12. > :26:19.should become a permanent feature. Plenty more to come. Make sure that

:26:20. > :26:21.you join us later. We will leave you with our amazing choir. Have a great
