:00:09. > :01:03.The Channel Islands Air Search has announced it will have to buy a new

:01:04. > :01:07.aeroplane to replace the Lion's Pride, which crashed in Jersey in

:01:08. > :01:10.November. The rescue charity had hoped to be able to repair the

:01:11. > :01:14.aircraft but says the potential price of those works makes it more

:01:15. > :01:18.cost effective to buy a brand new rescue aircraft in 2015. Tim

:01:19. > :01:21.Robinson reports. This was the scene when the Lion's

:01:22. > :01:26.Pride crash`landed on a dark and stormy night, just yards from a

:01:27. > :01:29.clifftop. The plane had been inadvertanly flying on the wrong

:01:30. > :01:34.fuel tanks. They ran out and its engines cut out over the sea at low

:01:35. > :01:37.altitude. At first people were relieved its five crew and

:01:38. > :01:40.passengers walked away with their lives. But almost immediately

:01:41. > :01:45.thoughts turned to the damage done to this vital tool in the Channel

:01:46. > :01:47.Islands' search and rescue armoury. Engineers painstakingly dismantled

:01:48. > :01:52.and removed the plane and specialists began assessing whether

:01:53. > :01:55.it could be repaired. Six weeks of investigation showed the potential

:01:56. > :02:00.repair bill is so expensive the charity decided it's actually better

:02:01. > :02:05.off buying a brand`new aircraft. That will happen in three stages.

:02:06. > :02:08.From about a month's time cover will be provided by a temporary Islander,

:02:09. > :02:12.like the one which crashed, but without the specialist search

:02:13. > :02:16.equipment. Four months later they'll borrow a used Islander with that

:02:17. > :02:19.search equipment to tide them over. But that aircraft can't be the

:02:20. > :02:23.long`term solution because it has more flying hours ` like miles on

:02:24. > :02:27.the clock for a car ` than the plane that crashed. So the charity will

:02:28. > :02:33.raise money to buy a brand new Islander in 2015, which it hopes to

:02:34. > :02:36.use for the next 30 years. All that will be extremely expensive and will

:02:37. > :02:44.require a big contribution from islanders if this rescue plan is to

:02:45. > :02:47.get off the ground. Earlier I spoke to the founder of

:02:48. > :02:51.Channel Islands Air Search, Roger Dadd, in our Guernsey Studio. I

:02:52. > :02:57.began by asking him how much a new aircraft will cost and if the

:02:58. > :03:01.charity could afford it. We are very confident we can raise the sum

:03:02. > :03:07.because the response on behalf of the public of all of the Channel

:03:08. > :03:12.Islands has been fantastic. The basic aircraft is ?1.25 million but

:03:13. > :03:18.that is only the beginning of the story because we had to put special

:03:19. > :03:26.equipment on board, and that has yet to be settled. How much have you

:03:27. > :03:30.raised so far? I can't tell you that. We are in the process of

:03:31. > :03:36.looking at it and we will have answers towards middle of January.

:03:37. > :03:43.It is a month since the incident in Jersey. How are the crew coping now?

:03:44. > :03:47.Everybody has settled back down again, we are just focusing on the

:03:48. > :03:54.new decision, which is not to proceed with the old aeroplane and

:03:55. > :03:57.be very expensive repairs but getting a new aircraft and the

:03:58. > :04:03.interim measures to get `` to keep this going. Are islanders vulnerable

:04:04. > :04:11.until those aeroplanes come into service? No, there is a temporary

:04:12. > :04:17.measure whereby the Brecon helicopter will operate and use some

:04:18. > :04:22.of our crew's observers, so there is a degree of cover. It is not as

:04:23. > :04:27.extensive as we would be providing in the long`term but at least there

:04:28. > :04:30.is something there. Average household bills for rubbish

:04:31. > :04:33.in Guernsey will double in the next three years under plans announced

:04:34. > :04:36.today. Charges for collection and processing of waste could go up to

:04:37. > :04:40.around ?4 a week ` that's around ?200 a year. The parishes will stay

:04:41. > :04:44.involved but people will have to buy special bags. The States will meet

:04:45. > :04:49.in January to decide on the proposals to focus on re`cycling

:04:50. > :04:53.rather than landfill. What we are moving to is a waste

:04:54. > :04:59.management system where we do our bit by the planet, we reuse and

:05:00. > :05:07.recycle, but we also we divert as much waste from the end solution, so

:05:08. > :05:11.the extra cost is to make sure we can do the job properly.

:05:12. > :05:15.The French government has announced Jersey is no longer on its tax black

:05:16. > :05:17.list. In August, the island was placed on a French list of

:05:18. > :05:21.jurisdictions considered as "non`cooperative" when it comes to

:05:22. > :05:24.exchanging tax information. Jersey's Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst,

:05:25. > :05:27.says the change has come after efforts by the States to meet

:05:28. > :05:30.criteria set by France. Jersey is the first place in the

:05:31. > :05:33.British Isles to ban a psychoactive drug. Ethylphenidate, which goes

:05:34. > :05:36.under the street name "magic crystals", has been made illegal in

:05:37. > :05:40.the island. There'll be a one week amnesty for people to hand the Class

:05:41. > :05:43.B drug to police. Youngsters have been warned of the harmful affects

:05:44. > :05:46.of so`called legal highs since the death of 16`year`old Max Blandin,

:05:47. > :05:49.who's believed to have been using them. The health service say they're

:05:50. > :05:55.becoming more available and this particular one is one of the most

:05:56. > :05:59.toxic ever seen in Jersey. The drug is chemically similar to

:06:00. > :06:07.amphetamines but several times more potent so it's come down affect our

:06:08. > :06:13.very severe, leaving users paranoid and irrational. In some cases they

:06:14. > :06:17.might actually suffer from full`blown psychosis.

:06:18. > :06:20.An ?8 million revamp of one of Jersey's oldest hotels has begun.

:06:21. > :06:23.The Southampton Hotel and nearby bar are being turned into offices and a

:06:24. > :06:26.restaurant. Built in the 19th century, developers say it will be

:06:27. > :06:30.returned to its former glory, as most of the original facade will be

:06:31. > :06:37.saved. It should take a year and a half to complete.

:06:38. > :06:41.One of Jersey's top football players is calling for the island to follow

:06:42. > :06:44.rivals Guernsey FC and enter an English league. Former captain Luke

:06:45. > :06:47.Watson says the sport is in danger of becoming stale in Jersey and

:06:48. > :06:51.playing more fixtures on the mainland could be the answer. So

:06:52. > :06:54.could we soon see a Jersey FC and will that draw the crowds to

:06:55. > :07:00.Springfield? Pam Caulfield reports. Making history in San Marino.

:07:01. > :07:05.Representing England, Jersey made its mark on an international stage

:07:06. > :07:13.in 2012. At the time officials wanted that legacy to continue.

:07:14. > :07:19.I believe the Jersey FA should be getting behind these guys. If you

:07:20. > :07:22.have young players in the island, they should aspire to this.

:07:23. > :07:25.It was suggested then that Jersey should join an English league. But

:07:26. > :07:31.it's not happened, and the player who captained the side through the

:07:32. > :07:35.tournament believes now is the time. Jersey team playing in the UK league

:07:36. > :07:39.week in, week out, would be what I would want to see. I feel personally

:07:40. > :07:51.that foot will over here has become a bit stale. `` foot Pole. There has

:07:52. > :07:55.been no real progression and I think it is time to step up and match what

:07:56. > :07:57.Guernsey is doing across the water. And by following Guernsey's lead

:07:58. > :08:01.they hope that Springfield could become more like Footes Lane, with

:08:02. > :08:10.more matches, bigger crowds and a better atmosphere.

:08:11. > :08:14.The benefits, obviously you are testing yourself out every single

:08:15. > :08:22.week against players you don't know so it is a higher level and an

:08:23. > :08:26.unknown quantity. Before you knew a player's weaknesses and strengths,

:08:27. > :08:30.now you are stepping out into the unknown every week.

:08:31. > :08:35.That success has come after years of hard work and dedication and funding

:08:36. > :08:42.but those behind a future Jersey FC feel it is worth the effort to

:08:43. > :08:50.improve sport within the island and rich in the rivalry with teams

:08:51. > :08:53.outside it. With Christmas soon upon us, this

:08:54. > :08:55.week we're featuring festive songs and carols performed by choirs from

:08:56. > :08:57.around the Channel Islands. Tonight's comes from Les Beaucamps

:08:58. > :09:16.School in Guernsey. # Candlelight burning bright,

:09:17. > :09:24.flickering and shimmering # Set the world aglow upon this dark and

:09:25. > :09:57.wintry night # Friends are here, gathered near # On this candlelight

:09:58. > :10:03.Silent night. #

:10:04. > :10:10.Congratulations to the school and all of the quires that have taken

:10:11. > :10:26.part this week. `` choirs. More unsettled weather across the

:10:27. > :10:30.weekend. We have some rain with us tomorrow, some strong winds

:10:31. > :10:35.overnight, particularly first thing. Rain will be quite heavy at times

:10:36. > :10:41.and we have already seen quite a bit of rain through the week. There is

:10:42. > :10:49.possible disruption with the strong winds and heavy rain. Keep up with

:10:50. > :11:01.your ABC radio stations for the latest. `` TBC. `` BBC. The rain

:11:02. > :11:04.does eventually clear. On Sunday it is still looking quite windy. We

:11:05. > :11:10.will have some showers through the day as well. Tonight it is dry at

:11:11. > :11:14.first but this rain arrives after midnight, some heavier downpours

:11:15. > :11:19.into the early hours, which is when the south`westerly winds start to

:11:20. > :11:24.peak. A mild night, with temperatures no lower than eight

:11:25. > :11:32.degrees. We will have some stronger gusts of wind. The winds easing for

:11:33. > :11:38.a bit in the afternoon but still some fresh winds and we see the rain

:11:39. > :11:39.clearing towards tomorrow evening. Temperatures still fairly mild, up

:11:40. > :12:09.to 11 or 12 agrees. Some unsettled weather continuing

:12:10. > :12:14.for the weekend. On Sunday we will see some sunshine along with showers

:12:15. > :12:15.but Monday and Tuesday we expect more heavy rain and further strong

:12:16. > :12:58.winds. Salcombe. A dog died after eating a

:12:59. > :13:01.similar substance on a beach in Cornwall.

:13:02. > :13:08.Coming up later a Christmas carol from a Cornish Choir. Also still

:13:09. > :13:14.ahead on Spotlight tonight. A dazzling display ` the festive

:13:15. > :13:19.lights with a very special purpose. We will be meeting this young lady,

:13:20. > :13:24.who for the past three years has broken world, European and British

:13:25. > :13:27.powerlifting records. Volunteers are being called into the

:13:28. > :13:29.Royal Cornwall Hospital to help support patients and staff in the

:13:30. > :13:32.hospital's busy emergency department. They spend time on

:13:33. > :13:35.non`clinical duties, freeing up nursing staff to concentrate on

:13:36. > :13:45.medical care and emergencies. As Eleanor Parkinson reports, it's

:13:46. > :13:50.being hailed a big success. This man was brought in to the department

:13:51. > :13:57.after his pacemaker gave him programme `` problems. A volunteer

:13:58. > :14:01.gets him a cup of tea and stays for a chat. I thought that was

:14:02. > :14:07.excellent. I have been in for a long time this morning. There are lots of

:14:08. > :14:12.areas of inaction and short bursts of people dealing with you. Suddenly

:14:13. > :14:19.you are left on your own again. This was a nice diversion. They really

:14:20. > :14:26.like it. Not all the staff have enough time to sit with patients. It

:14:27. > :14:32.can be daunting coming into and emergency department on your own and

:14:33. > :14:35.they really appreciate it. Nurses the volunteers do some of the caring

:14:36. > :14:41.work they do because they are busy with emergencies. Little things like

:14:42. > :14:45.a cup of tea and a chart, things which are very important to the

:14:46. > :14:55.patient. We do not get the time to do them. It really does make their

:14:56. > :14:58.experience so much better. I think it helps with the atmosphere in any

:14:59. > :15:03.department but especially the emergence and departments. They know

:15:04. > :15:08.these are people who have the time and the interest, they choose to be

:15:09. > :15:14.there, they are not paid to be there so they really want to help. There

:15:15. > :15:20.are more than 500 volunteers in the trust. The trust says if anyone

:15:21. > :15:26.thinks they have skills to offer, they get in touch. `` they should

:15:27. > :15:29.get and Hutch. Time for the sport now and Dave has

:15:30. > :15:34.a powerful story coming up, haven't you? Absolutely. But I will keep you

:15:35. > :15:37.waiting. Exeter Chiefs seek their first win

:15:38. > :15:40.in six games when rugby's Premiership resumes this weekend.

:15:41. > :15:43.After a tough run of late, including two ordeals against the European Cup

:15:44. > :15:46.holders Toulon, the Chiefs are looking forward to getting back into

:15:47. > :15:59.the groove against lowly Newcastle Falcons at Sandy Park tomorrow.

:16:00. > :16:03.Gareth Steenson returns from injury, bring in Ceri Sweeney or will they

:16:04. > :16:09.stick with the promising Henry Slade? It is great to make that

:16:10. > :16:15.competition. There are no questions that all three of them could run a

:16:16. > :16:18.game in the premiership. Yeovil Town begin their festive programme aiming

:16:19. > :16:24.for a fifth game without defeat in the Championship. After gaining a

:16:25. > :16:27.valuable point at Barnsley, the Glovers try to crawl out of the

:16:28. > :16:31.bottom three by beating Blackburn Rovers at Huish Park. The League Two

:16:32. > :16:34.ball starts rolling tonight at St James' Park where Exeter City look

:16:35. > :16:37.to follow up their win at Accrington with another against Chesterfield.

:16:38. > :16:40.After two straight defeats, Plymouth Argyle hope to find the knack of

:16:41. > :16:43.scoring against Bury at Home Park, while bottom`of`the`table Torquay

:16:44. > :16:50.United, buoyed by their win over Southend last week, attempt the same

:16:51. > :16:53.at Dagenham and Redbridge. She's been described as the

:16:54. > :16:56.strongest school girl in Britain. 17`year`old Shahar Head from Newton

:16:57. > :16:59.Abbot is the world drug`free powerlifting champion, coming first

:17:00. > :17:13.in her age category and second overall. I visited her at her gym.

:17:14. > :17:19.Hello there. You are supposed to be the strongest schoolgirl in Britain

:17:20. > :17:26.but with visual powerlifting gear. I've just come from college where

:17:27. > :17:29.I'm studying. I have to change. Alex Deeterlee has powered her way

:17:30. > :17:32.Finally, Plymouth Raiders have the chance to avenge their BBL Cup

:17:33. > :17:39.semifinal defeat by Leicester Riders when they face

:17:40. > :17:46.not bad for a girl who was bullied at school. I used to get bullied at

:17:47. > :17:53.school so I decided to change. Someone told me to try lifting

:17:54. > :17:59.weights. I loved it ever since. I never knew about it before. It took

:18:00. > :18:03.me by surprise. Powerlifting is different from weightlifting. There

:18:04. > :18:09.are no disciplines like the clean and jerk and snatch. Instead they

:18:10. > :18:16.have the deadlifts in which she lifted 170 kilos to get the world

:18:17. > :18:24.title. There is the squat lift where she lifted 23 stones. And the bench

:18:25. > :18:30.press four which she registered 18 kilos. I never expected to get far

:18:31. > :18:35.as I have in such a short space of time. The training is intense and

:18:36. > :18:45.very hard. It is a long journey with injuries. I am completely surprised

:18:46. > :18:48.by how well I have done. Some federations have tried to get into

:18:49. > :18:52.the Olympics but claimed there are too many power spots in the

:18:53. > :19:01.Olympics, but hopefully one day. That is your lot, I need a break. So

:19:02. > :19:11.did I, after matching her pound for pound full top `` pound. Plymouth

:19:12. > :19:16.Raiders have the chance to avenge their semi`couple `` semifinal

:19:17. > :19:23.defeat at the pavillion this Sunday afternoon. Enjoy your Christmas

:19:24. > :19:26.shopping. Thank you very much.

:19:27. > :19:29.Now, every year some people go all out to have the best display of

:19:30. > :19:33.Christmas lights in the neighbourhood ` and you either love

:19:34. > :19:36.them or hate them! Well, this year, one young man from Braunton in North

:19:37. > :19:40.Devon, has pulled out all the stops and is raising money for charity at

:19:41. > :19:45.the same time. Spotlight's North Devon reporter, Andrea Ormsby, has

:19:46. > :19:50.the story. It has been weeks in the planning

:19:51. > :19:55.and now it is dazzling the neighbours and they love it. I

:19:56. > :20:05.planned it all out first, it took me three weeks altogether. Endless

:20:06. > :20:11.night, and most evenings. It took me a while. I have had a few comments

:20:12. > :20:17.like it is brilliant and well done. I have had if few donations. It is

:20:18. > :20:22.the creation of Josh will Lidl to raise money for a new chemotherapy

:20:23. > :20:30.units. `` Josh Liddall. Both his grandparents died off cancer. I

:20:31. > :20:35.think it is a great idea. It is the best thing he could have done. We

:20:36. > :20:40.really are proud of him. It is brilliant. You know where you are

:20:41. > :20:45.coming, round the corner. You must be proud of him? Oh yes, very proud

:20:46. > :20:54.and I think his grandfather would have been very crowded as well. ``

:20:55. > :21:07.very proud. We have a river of lights here. We have bested penguins

:21:13. > :21:16.better and in the future watch out King of Christmas lights, you have

:21:17. > :21:23.competition. Spectacular. Didn't he do well.

:21:24. > :21:26.Please do share your Christmas lights pictures with us. Dean from

:21:27. > :21:34.St Dennis in Cornwall sent this one in earlier. Thank you. You can share

:21:35. > :21:43.yours on our facebook page, that's facebook.com/bbcspotlight. We look

:21:44. > :21:46.forward to seeing them. This is my last programme before Christmas so I

:21:47. > :21:51.want to thank everyone who sent in Christmas cards and gifts, very kind

:21:52. > :22:00.and generous and much appreciated. Now for the weather. If you have

:22:01. > :22:05.outdoor decorations, make sure they are securely fastened because we

:22:06. > :22:10.have strong winds. We have more unsettled weather across the

:22:11. > :22:16.weekend, so it will be windy and there will be rain and showers. We

:22:17. > :22:23.start off with a weather warning from the Met Office for the rain

:22:24. > :22:28.tonight. Strong gas when as well. It is especially their heavy rainfall

:22:29. > :22:37.to watch out for the top `` strong gusts of wind. Flood alerts are out

:22:38. > :22:44.for rivers around the region. Keep an eye on the Environment Agency

:22:45. > :22:49.website. This is the satellite picture from earlier on. You can see

:22:50. > :22:55.this huge patch of cloud moving end during the day which is associated

:22:56. > :22:59.with an area of low pressure. We will have heavy rainfall, peaking

:23:00. > :23:04.around midnight. The rain will eventually clear. We have a line of

:23:05. > :23:12.intention is heading our way tomorrow afternoon. Windy tomorrow

:23:13. > :23:22.as well. More showers on Sunday from top cooler year by the end of the

:23:23. > :23:31.weekend. Cloud and showers throughout the day. This rain will

:23:32. > :23:44.arrive from the West stop `` from the West. It remains very mild

:23:45. > :23:52.overnight. First thing tomorrow, the rain clears from the South. We will

:23:53. > :23:55.have some sunshine for our time on Saturday but for tomorrow afternoon

:23:56. > :24:00.and early evening, this line of showers will do then and we will

:24:01. > :24:08.have torrential downpours locally. There is the risk of hail and

:24:09. > :24:12.thunder with these downpours. It remains mild with the south`westerly

:24:13. > :24:23.winds stop temperatures are around 12 degrees. Some sunshine for the

:24:24. > :24:40.Isles of Scilly is but strong winds. Times of high water... Big waves,

:24:41. > :24:50.choppy conditions and eyes to see we have the south`westerly wind,

:24:51. > :24:55.increasing to gale force at times. On Monday, you can see this next

:24:56. > :25:00.batch of low`pressure sweeps them bringing more heavy rain which will

:25:01. > :25:07.continue into Christmas Eve. If your travel plans for next week, take

:25:08. > :25:11.note of possible disruption. We have an early warning out for Monday

:25:12. > :25:19.already for wet and windy conditions. Keep an eye on that.

:25:20. > :25:22.That's it from us on this last Friday before Christmas and having

:25:23. > :25:25.heard carols sung by singers from our four counties, tonight we hear

:25:26. > :25:28.once again from the Cornish Choir. Recorded in the Mary Harris Chapel

:25:29. > :25:32.at the University of Exeter, we leave you this evening with the

:25:33. > :25:36.Angel Carol sung by the Sterts Singers.
