:00:07. > :00:15.Good evenings, the headlines. This Monday night. Trees down, ferries

:00:16. > :00:19.cancelled and flights disrupteds as severe gale force winds sweep across

:00:20. > :00:23.the Channel Islands Although the ferries are running behind schedule

:00:24. > :00:27.because of the weather, the good news is that everybody is going to

:00:28. > :00:30.travel to where they want to go and the turkeys will be on the table for

:00:31. > :00:35.Christmas. Here is the deep area of low pressure which has brought us

:00:36. > :00:38.the heavy rain, and strong winds once again, which will continue for

:00:39. > :00:43.a time through this evening and the first part of tonight. Join me later

:00:44. > :00:48.for the full forecast. Also coming up in the programme

:00:49. > :00:56.Full mark, the top institutions keen to make a university in Guernsey and

:00:57. > :01:02.Alderney reality TfL. And... # Tonight we celebrate. #

:01:03. > :01:13.The Guernsey school helping us get into the Christmas spirit.

:01:14. > :01:19.Christmas week in the Channel Islands has begun with widespread

:01:20. > :01:25.disruption as gale force weather has battered Guernsey and Jersey, trees

:01:26. > :01:29.are down and air and sea passengers face delays and cancellation, it

:01:30. > :01:36.comes as forecasters are issued a read warning, the most serious.

:01:37. > :01:41.A victim of the storm. This tree simply couldn't stand up to the high

:01:42. > :01:46.winds and torrential rain battering the Channel Islands. This was Jersey

:01:47. > :01:53.this afternoon. No surprise that sea and air passengers trying to get

:01:54. > :01:58.away for Christmas face disruption, with severe gale force winds

:01:59. > :02:03.expected ferries were cancelled They have been disrupted, although

:02:04. > :02:06.the conventional ferries are running behind schedule because of the

:02:07. > :02:09.weather, the good news is that everybody is going to travel to

:02:10. > :02:14.where they want to go, and the turkeys will be on the table for

:02:15. > :02:16.Christmas. That is because the main freight carrier battled the

:02:17. > :02:21.conditions and made it in. Much to the relief of shoppers on

:02:22. > :02:24.the busiest food shopping day of the year.

:02:25. > :02:27.The shops are full, there is plenty of stock, there is no need for

:02:28. > :02:32.anybody to panic. It is OK. Clearly the boat that was due in this

:02:33. > :02:36.afternoon has been rescheduled until tomorrow morning, and weather

:02:37. > :02:40.dependent that should be arriving at 6.00 in the morning, so the food

:02:41. > :02:43.should be on the shelves tomorrow morning. Tomorrow's delivery is

:02:44. > :02:47.stock we are bringing in for post Christmas, so most of the stock we

:02:48. > :02:51.have for Christmas now is in the islands, so everyone should be fine.

:02:52. > :02:54.Forecasters say the conditions are likely to last through today and

:02:55. > :02:58.overnight. The result of a rapidly deepening

:02:59. > :03:03.low pressure in the Atlantic. This weather is almost as bad as it can

:03:04. > :03:08.get, we have issued a red severe weather warning, which takes into

:03:09. > :03:13.account storm force ten winds with, gusts to 80mph. We would normally

:03:14. > :03:16.expect to issue one less frequently than once a year.

:03:17. > :03:20.So, although Christmas week has started wet and windy, the good news

:03:21. > :03:27.is the weather in the Channel Islands is set to improve by

:03:28. > :03:30.Christmas Day. And BBC Guernsey and radio Jersey

:03:31. > :03:35.will have the latest travel information for you from 6.00

:03:36. > :03:39.tomorrow morning and Emily will have a full forecast later. More news now

:03:40. > :03:43.and a man has been charged with robbery after Guernsey police

:03:44. > :03:48.travelled to the UK to arrest him. Shaun Ogden from Eastbourne is

:03:49. > :03:52.accused of stealing ?140 from Union Street Stores in March. He was flown

:03:53. > :03:57.back to the island yesterday and appeared in court this morning.

:03:58. > :04:01.Jersey's bailiff has extended his appeal for victims of the Philippine

:04:02. > :04:08.typhoon. People can donate to the end of February. Nearly 93 thousand

:04:09. > :04:13.Nick Brown has been raced for islanders. And bus user in Jersey

:04:14. > :04:19.were treated to a free journey course si of the island transport

:04:20. > :04:24.initiative: It saw an extra 160 passenger use the bus service than

:04:25. > :04:29.the previous Sunday, LibertyBus say they would consider doing it again.

:04:30. > :04:35.This initiative, TTS paid for to cover the service, yesterday, so we

:04:36. > :04:38.will do it any time TTS want to support the local business, support

:04:39. > :04:42.the local community, you know, this is about us working in partnership

:04:43. > :04:47.with TTS, working in partnership with the island of Jersey.

:04:48. > :04:51.You are watching the BBC here in the Channel Islands. Plenty more still

:04:52. > :04:55.to come, including Spotlight with Justin and Natalie. Given just 0%

:04:56. > :05:05.chance of survival, the triplets defying the odds to celebrate

:05:06. > :05:08.Christmas. First the organisation wanting to

:05:09. > :05:12.create a university in Guernsey and Alderney have been approached by top

:05:13. > :05:16.institutions keen to award the degrees. That is according to the

:05:17. > :05:21.woman behind the ambitious plans. The project could see 2 thousand

:05:22. > :05:27.sthueants based in the islands. `` students. Guernsey could be

:05:28. > :05:31.featuring in its own prospectus if plans to establish a university

:05:32. > :05:35.become a reality. People can study for degrees in both Guernsey and

:05:36. > :05:39.Jersey but this proposal is to provide a privately run facility in

:05:40. > :05:44.Guernsey and Alderney for up to 2,000 students. It is aiming of the

:05:45. > :05:50.of Russell Group standards, similar to what is on offer at Oxford. Those

:05:51. > :05:56.behind the scheme claim there is a lot of interest In 2014, starting in

:05:57. > :06:00.January, we will be moving the university forward in every respect.

:06:01. > :06:05.One of the them things for us, is that we are being approached by high

:06:06. > :06:10.level university, from across the world. The States hasn't been asked

:06:11. > :06:13.to provide any funds, but has agreed to support and encourage the not for

:06:14. > :06:16.profit project, which is due to begin in October.

:06:17. > :06:21.But concerns have been raised over the impact on housing stock and

:06:22. > :06:24.public service, as well as the island's reputation should the

:06:25. > :06:29.university fail. There is a long way to go yet, and

:06:30. > :06:33.reputation risk must be at the forefront of my minds, any new

:06:34. > :06:39.business coming to Guernsey will have a risk, so I feel our job is to

:06:40. > :06:45.make sure it is a minimal risk. They are looking for funding from local

:06:46. > :06:49.high net worth individuals and businesses in Guernsey na, are

:06:50. > :06:53.better at assessing risk and putting their money in than with the States

:06:54. > :06:58.are Ikely to be. The States are not being asked for money any way.

:06:59. > :07:01.With ambitious plans to introduce postgraduate courses in October the

:07:02. > :07:05.woman behind the project says everything is on schedule.

:07:06. > :07:11.I would say we are on track, clearly there is work to be done, on

:07:12. > :07:14.immigration, and housing, and we are currently in discussion with those

:07:15. > :07:19.departments. It is still unclear where it will be

:07:20. > :07:24.sited. Who will pay for it and when the first students will ab rive ``

:07:25. > :07:27.arrive. Those behind the scheme say they won't have to revise their

:07:28. > :07:35.plans and are determined to establish a high quality university.

:07:36. > :07:38.That is a story we will keep across here on the programme. Now the

:07:39. > :07:41.weather. We saw in Amy's report about the bad conditions that have

:07:42. > :07:46.been facing the Channel Islands throughout the course of the day.

:07:47. > :07:51.The latest details come from Emily Wood. We do still have heavy rain

:07:52. > :07:55.and strong winds with us for a time this evening. It looks like the

:07:56. > :07:59.winds will peak over the next couple of hour, with storm force winds

:08:00. > :08:03.possible, that is gusting up to 80mph. Saw some heavy rain for a

:08:04. > :08:08.time at first tonight as well, though after midnight it looks like

:08:09. > :08:13.the rain will start to clear and the winds will ease for first thing

:08:14. > :08:17.tomorrow morning. But do take care if you are out and about. Keep

:08:18. > :08:21.across your BBC local radio station for any further disruption into

:08:22. > :08:26.tomorrow morning. On the satellite picture from

:08:27. > :08:30.earlier, you can see this huge area of cloud which has swept in from the

:08:31. > :08:33.west. It is associated with a fairly deep area of low pressure, some

:08:34. > :08:37.active weather fronts in there as well. This waving weather front will

:08:38. > :08:42.bring heavy rain and the stronger winds for a time this evening. So as

:08:43. > :08:46.we go through the evening we will continue with the wet weather, into

:08:47. > :08:50.tomorrow and by midday the rain should have cleared. We will see

:08:51. > :08:54.showers and windy condition, but the winds won't be as strong. Then, for

:08:55. > :09:00.Christmas Day, we are looking at much lighter winds, still unsettled,

:09:01. > :09:02.a weather front nearby, a chance of showers but there will be some

:09:03. > :09:07.sunshine mixed in there. For tonight, we are still with the heavy

:09:08. > :09:11.rain, still these winds yet to peak. After midnight, the heaviest of the

:09:12. > :09:18.rain should clear, and although still windy, a snuers with us `` a

:09:19. > :09:22.few showers. Temperatures no lower than 8 C. For tomorrow, we will have

:09:23. > :09:27.a few showers with us through the day. Moving through quickly, a

:09:28. > :09:30.fairly brisk west or south`west wind, blustery winds with the

:09:31. > :09:34.shower, but through the afternoon we will start to see a few more drier

:09:35. > :09:39.and clearer spell, and still fairly mild air with us tomorrow,

:09:40. > :09:45.temperatures between nine and 1 C for tomorrow afternoon.

:09:46. > :09:48.We have some scattered locally squally showers, visibility

:09:49. > :09:53.generally good but locally poor The winds from the south`west that are

:09:54. > :09:57.force five to six but locally a force seven to gale force eight

:09:58. > :10:08.Particularly at first. Times of high water for tomorrow.

:10:09. > :10:16.Big waved and choppy or messy conditions. Further showers is and

:10:17. > :10:22.heavy rain Thursday and Friday. Not too bad for Christmas Day but

:10:23. > :10:29.take care in that bad weather. With Christmas on us we have been

:10:30. > :10:34.featuring festive songs and Carols. Tonight we come from Melrose in

:10:35. > :10:39.Jersey. That are singing one of their favourite songs from their

:10:40. > :10:44.Nativity. # Tonight we celebrate a baby king

:10:45. > :10:49.is born # Tonight we celebrate a saviour for

:10:50. > :11:09.us all # Jesus was born for us. #

:11:10. > :11:19.# Tonight we celebrate a gift from the Lord on high

:11:20. > :11:26.# Tonight we celebrate his love # We sing and shout

:11:27. > :11:34.# We let our praises out # Jesus the Son of God has been born

:11:35. > :11:41.had been tonight we celebrate a baby king is born

:11:42. > :11:44.# Tonight swell brat a saviour for us all

:11:45. > :11:51.# So we sing and we shout # And we let our praises out

:11:52. > :11:54.# Because Jesus Son of God has been born

:11:55. > :12:01.# Jesus Son of God has been born # Jesus the Son of God has been born

:12:02. > :12:03.for us. # APPLAUSE.

:12:04. > :12:08.Brilliant. If you have been affected by the bad weather we hope those

:12:09. > :12:12.children cheered you up. Thanks to our schools that have taken part in

:12:13. > :12:16.our festivities over the past week. That is it for now. Back at eight

:12:17. > :12:23.and at 10.25. Here is Simon and Natalie. Bye for now.

:12:24. > :12:27.a result of an attack, it costs the charity ?50,000 to replace.

:12:28. > :12:31.If you've just joined us ` welcome to Spotlight from the BBC. Still to

:12:32. > :12:35.come on our last full programme before Christmas.

:12:36. > :12:43.We've reported on them all year but a foodbank brings a special

:12:44. > :12:46.Christmas gift. God bless these guys. The kids love it as more

:12:47. > :12:50.because they have their little hats on.

:12:51. > :12:54.And from the new to the old ` a fresh sound to Christmas before we

:12:55. > :13:02.hear our final carol. Onto the sport and Dave's here with

:13:03. > :13:09.the final round`up before Christmas. First, football how did Yeovil get

:13:10. > :13:12.on Dave ` good news? I'm afraid not. Yeovil Town failed to stretch their

:13:13. > :13:16.unbeaten run in the Championship following a one goal loss to

:13:17. > :13:19.Blackburn Rovers at Huish Park. Jordan Rhodes struck in the second

:13:20. > :13:23.half to keep the Glovers next`to`the bottom of the standings. Again, they

:13:24. > :13:26.can count themselves unlucky after they twice hit the framework,

:13:27. > :13:34.leaving their manager a little frustrated.

:13:35. > :13:41.We are not too disappointed. We are not devastated. We are disappointed

:13:42. > :13:45.to have lost a point. They are still learning and we will keep going. In

:13:46. > :13:47.League Two, Aaron Downes gave Torquay United tail`to`tail

:13:48. > :13:50.victories to take them out of the relegation spots. This one at

:13:51. > :13:53.Dagenham and Redbridge with the centre`back scoring just after

:13:54. > :13:57.half`time. The Gulls now look for a hat`trick in Boxing Day's home duel

:13:58. > :14:00.with Bristol Rovers. There was a pick`me`up for Plymouth Argyle at

:14:01. > :14:03.Home Park against Bury. Keelan Lavery and Reuben Reid gave the

:14:04. > :14:09.Pilgrims a 2`1 winning result, the perfect tonic ahead of Boxing Day's

:14:10. > :14:12.test at second`placed Oxford. Exeter City's home form let them

:14:13. > :14:16.down again as leaders Chesterfield beat them two`nil on Friday night to

:14:17. > :14:24.leave them five points adrift of the play`off pack.

:14:25. > :14:32.There are moments when they out powered us. It doesn't happen too

:14:33. > :14:37.often but we have to make it doesn't happen going forward as often as it

:14:38. > :14:40.has done in the last week or two. Exeter Chiefs have gone up to fifth

:14:41. > :14:43.in rugby's Premiership with a hard`fought 16`3 win over Newcastle

:14:44. > :14:47.Falcons at Sandy Park. After three Gareth Steenson penalties put the

:14:48. > :14:50.Chiefs 9`0 ahead, the only try came from scrum half Haydn Thomas. He

:14:51. > :14:55.danced his way over to end Exeter's run of five defeats in a row in

:14:56. > :14:59.league and cup and set them up for Harlequins at Twickenham next

:15:00. > :15:01.Saturday. Penzance and Newlyn's Olympic and

:15:02. > :15:04.World Championship rower Helen Glover could be reunited with her

:15:05. > :15:08.Olympic pairs partner Heather Stanning from Yeovil. They won

:15:09. > :15:13.Britain's first gold medal at the 2012 London Games. Since then,

:15:14. > :15:16.Heather returned to her Army post and Polly Swann stepped into her

:15:17. > :15:21.shoes to achieve more success with Helen. But Glover found herself

:15:22. > :15:31.taking on more responsibility and now Stanning is back training

:15:32. > :15:40.full`time. Whether I wrote with Helen again or not, we will wait and

:15:41. > :15:45.see. `` whether I ride. She is a fantastic athlete and she definitely

:15:46. > :15:49.brings the best out of me. I am looking forward to training with her

:15:50. > :15:56.again. All it remains for me to say is have a lovely Christmas and a

:15:57. > :16:00.very happy New Year. Good luck to all our teams over the

:16:01. > :16:03.festive period. Now a family from Cornwall whose triplets were born

:16:04. > :16:06.thirteen weeks prematurely have recently celebrated their fifth

:16:07. > :16:09.birthdays. Parents Sam and Andrew Paciuszko from Truro were warned

:16:10. > :16:15.their children only had a thirty per cent chance of survival.

:16:16. > :16:19.Well they defied the odds and the triplets are proving to be quite a

:16:20. > :16:27.handful for mum and dad. John Danks reports. At birth, they were tiny

:16:28. > :16:33.and fighting for life. Now, five years on, they are big and

:16:34. > :16:38.absolutely full of it. Harry, Martha and EV weighed around ?2 when they

:16:39. > :16:41.were born. Due to a lack of beds, they spent weeks apart receiving

:16:42. > :16:48.specialist treatment at three different hospitals. They had a

:16:49. > :16:55.whole host of medical problems. Thanks to the medical staff, they

:16:56. > :17:00.are all here to tell the tale all fit and fighting well, other than

:17:01. > :17:05.coughs and colds. We filmed them after they were allowed home. I

:17:06. > :17:09.remember the first night with them being here. Two of them were still

:17:10. > :17:16.on oxygen so we were paranoid of what to do. We were doing things on

:17:17. > :17:21.our own for the first time. It was a bit scary. We revisited them again

:17:22. > :17:28.on their first birthday. Mum and dad now fully in the swing of childcare.

:17:29. > :17:34.It is a constant round of feeding, sterilising, changing. It is

:17:35. > :17:38.endless. They wouldn't have it any other way and now with the children

:17:39. > :17:43.attending schools, the normality of family life is something they

:17:44. > :17:48.cherish. Part of it seems a distant memory. Five years has flown past. I

:17:49. > :17:57.am so grateful for the help that we had. We are really lucky. It is hard

:17:58. > :18:02.work but, yes, we came out the lucky side of it. Now their birthdays or

:18:03. > :18:03.out of the way, they are turning their attention to that other

:18:04. > :18:10.special day in the calendar. More than 200 families in Cornwall

:18:11. > :18:14.who are struggling to buy food this Christmas will get a free Christmas

:18:15. > :18:17.meal this year, thanks to a local charity. The food bank in Camborne

:18:18. > :18:20.is delivering a turkey, mince pies and Christmas pudding to people who

:18:21. > :18:26.can't afford food or presents. Eleanor Parkinson reports.

:18:27. > :18:32.Volunteers have been busy for several weeks putting together the

:18:33. > :18:36.perfect Christmas meal. This year they are helping more than 200

:18:37. > :18:43.farmers who they say of facing a bleak Christmas. We have put the

:18:44. > :18:50.level at 200 and we have 227 but we could have done 500. It is a big

:18:51. > :19:01.problem but as you can see, we can't do any more. Each box will include

:19:02. > :19:05.the things that we all enjoyed. Actions `` a Christmas pudding,

:19:06. > :19:13.Christmas cake and chocolate is. Donations were still rolling in. 200

:19:14. > :19:21.Christmas puddings from a local company. Meals were complete with a

:19:22. > :19:26.Christmas turkey. We plan what we are going to eat and the nice things

:19:27. > :19:33.that we are going to do and for some families, that not possible. People

:19:34. > :19:38.ought to be able to worry a little less and enjoy themselves a little

:19:39. > :19:49.bit more. Chris and his family will be getting a meal. He is unemployed

:19:50. > :19:56.and a single parent. God bless these guys. They wear Christmas hats and

:19:57. > :20:02.it is bringing a smile to my children's faces. 60,000 people in

:20:03. > :20:06.the country will be relying on food banks over the festive period. This

:20:07. > :20:13.food bank will be doing all it can to make sure no one in their area

:20:14. > :20:18.goes hungry this Christmas. For every top ten Christmas songs,

:20:19. > :20:22.there is a poll of the worse. If you're not a fan of the Christmas

:20:23. > :20:27.tape in shopping centres, maybe we can bring you some chair. Well

:20:28. > :20:30.children at Broadclyst Primary School near Exeter have been in good

:20:31. > :20:33.voice singing a new Christmas song which has been written by a local

:20:34. > :20:35.composer. Johnny Rutherford has been along to hear the latest festive

:20:36. > :20:52.tune. # Gather round, tonight is the

:20:53. > :20:57.night. New music for new voices. The song has been written by local

:20:58. > :21:01.composers from Exeter. I was thinking about my grandchildren and

:21:02. > :21:06.wanted to write a song for them at Christmas. I got together with

:21:07. > :21:14.Hannah and we wrote this little tune. The children loved it, they

:21:15. > :21:27.sang it at their school and the schools have now taken it on.

:21:28. > :21:37.What is refreshing is they have thought about the lyrics. It is

:21:38. > :21:40.really exciting and we are thinking about what is happening but we are

:21:41. > :21:48.also thinking about people that don't get what we get on Christmas

:21:49. > :21:57.Day. It is part of joining hands to sing for love and peace. We should

:21:58. > :22:04.enjoy the time that we get to spend with our family. That so many other

:22:05. > :22:09.Christmas songs that are cheesy and all of the carols that come out so

:22:10. > :22:19.it has been a gift to put this into the carol concert programmes. You
