:00:16. > :00:18.John Good evening. There's growing support among local charities
:00:19. > :00:21.tonight for more help and shelter to be provided for women in Jersey.
:00:22. > :00:25.Over Christmas, Caring Hands, which offers shelter and help for men, put
:00:26. > :00:30.posters on the back of buses asking men to ring up if they were going to
:00:31. > :00:33.be lonely at Christmas, but a number of women rang up too. The charity
:00:34. > :00:38.couldn't help them but thinks there needs to be more shelter for lonely
:00:39. > :00:42.women in the Island. Meanwhile there is now more help for homeless people
:00:43. > :00:45.in Jersey after the Shelter Trust reopened the Roseneath Centre. The
:00:46. > :00:48.building in St Helier closed two years ago because it didn't have
:00:49. > :00:51.enough money. Since then, it's been bought by the Health and Social
:00:52. > :00:54.Services Department and refurbished, creating 22 single rooms. Guy Le
:00:55. > :01:06.Maistre is the vice Chair of the Shelter Trust. Earlier he told me
:01:07. > :01:11.who Roseneath would be for. It is additional accommodation for the
:01:12. > :01:16.homeless community. Roseneath is part of the second stage, which is
:01:17. > :01:21.supported living. It is available to anyone. Sometimes people moving on
:01:22. > :01:25.through the first stage of emergency accommodation will move into
:01:26. > :01:31.Roseneath. We get referrals from people outside and partner agencies.
:01:32. > :01:36.It is available to anyone, male or female, preferably over 25, because
:01:37. > :01:46.we have a dedicated facility for young people. How badly needly is
:01:47. > :01:53.the Roseneath Centre? It is another valuable asset for Shelter Trust. It
:01:54. > :01:57.provides additional capacity for us. That is not to say that there is a
:01:58. > :02:02.problem, there is enough capacity in the system, but what it does do, is
:02:03. > :02:06.because it creates more units, at the moment we have a number of
:02:07. > :02:10.people who were living in shared accommodation, on one of our
:02:11. > :02:14.existing sites, so it provides the opportunity for us to move toward
:02:15. > :02:18.single occupancy, which is obviously great for the residents, in terms of
:02:19. > :02:27.getting back on their feet and giving people the time and space...
:02:28. > :02:36.As we all do, have their own personal space. The Carings Hands
:02:37. > :02:39.charity which runs the men's refuge says there's a growing number of
:02:40. > :02:50.women wanting help, does the Shelter Trust see this happening too? It is
:02:51. > :02:54.something we have noticed. Around one in ten of the homeless community
:02:55. > :03:01.were female and that has doubled in the last couple of years. The
:03:02. > :03:06.existing shelters are for both male and female and there is enough
:03:07. > :03:12.provision for them. I think at this time of year, for different reasons,
:03:13. > :03:20.sometimes there is greater demand at this particular time. Condor Ferries
:03:21. > :03:24.is making safety improvements to its guard rail system after a member of
:03:25. > :03:27.staff fell and was injured. The guard rail keeps people or vehicles
:03:28. > :03:31.from dangerous or off`limits areas on the ferry. The deck hand was
:03:32. > :03:34.trying to catch a mooring rope of a ferry in St Malo and fell over.
:03:35. > :03:38.Condor have told the BBC they've since made changes to prevent a
:03:39. > :03:41.similar accident in future. A smoke alarm saved the lives of a mother
:03:42. > :03:45.and her eight`year`old son when a fire broke out in their home in St
:03:46. > :03:49.John in Jersey. It started in the conservatory and spread to rest of
:03:50. > :03:52.the building in the early hours of yesterday morning. The woman and
:03:53. > :03:55.child were treated by paramedics for breathing in smoke. The semidetached
:03:56. > :03:57.house was extensively damaged by smoke and the conservatory was
:03:58. > :04:01.completely destroyed by the fire. The most likely cause of the fire
:04:02. > :04:04.was a faulty heater in the conservatory. There are calls for
:04:05. > :04:07.Guernsey's Health Minister to resign following a big underspend on the
:04:08. > :04:10.budget for bowel cancer screening. Deputy Mark Dorey admits he wrongly
:04:11. > :04:13.told politicians there was no money left for the screening programme.
:04:14. > :04:16.Now Deputy Mike Hadley says the minister should step down for
:04:17. > :04:19.misleading the States. Tonight Deputy Dorey said he'd been let down
:04:20. > :04:32.by HSSD civil servants over the underspend. What we will do is that
:04:33. > :04:37.there will be a separate call centre, a simple process, because
:04:38. > :04:41.any money spent on Bal cancer screening, you will get the analysis
:04:42. > :04:46.for that. We will correct the problem. As it was set up, it was
:04:47. > :04:49.not done. The Channel Islands' biggest sporting event of the year
:04:50. > :04:52.is just a few months away. The Commonwealth Games will be held in
:04:53. > :04:56.Glasgow over the summer of 2014. Guernsey will be sending the largest
:04:57. > :05:01.team from the islands and as Mike Wilkins reports, one of their best
:05:02. > :05:05.athletes is back on track. Guernsey on the global stage at the last
:05:06. > :05:16.Commonwealth Games in Delhi. And in a few months time the team will be
:05:17. > :05:20.going for gold in Glasgow. This is known to many athletes, they have
:05:21. > :05:24.spent many hours training and one of Guernsey's boast high`profile
:05:25. > :05:29.athletes is Lee Merrion. You were the fastest Briton at the last
:05:30. > :05:37.Olympics. That was the last time you competitively raced. You have had a
:05:38. > :05:41.tough time. Going back into training after the Olympics, I picked up an
:05:42. > :05:45.injury, thought it was innocuous, but unfortunately it was one of
:05:46. > :05:51.those things. I put myself through the rigours of probation for
:05:52. > :05:57.qualifying. I had a rough year with injury, quite a bit of surgery. I am
:05:58. > :06:01.now over the worst of that and back in training and looking forward to
:06:02. > :06:04.Glasgow. This man is responsible for the team and says Glasgow should be
:06:05. > :06:07.a more straightforward affair. Guernsey didn't manage to win any
:06:08. > :06:10.medals last time, but rest assured there are golden hopes for Glasgow.
:06:11. > :06:17.Glasgow will be a lot easier than Delhi. There were lots of things
:06:18. > :06:21.that were problematic right the way through the games. Glasgow will be
:06:22. > :06:28.far better organised than that. I think my job will be easier, having
:06:29. > :06:34.said that, there is an awful lot to do. The opening ceremony is just
:06:35. > :06:38.over the road from the games. We have that excitement building up,
:06:39. > :06:44.even now. Just to be able to have the team there, to see them come in,
:06:45. > :06:47.makes you feel terribly proud and very excited. Guernsey didn't manage
:06:48. > :06:49.to win any medals last time, but rest assured there are golden hopes
:06:50. > :07:01.for Glasgow. Time for the weather. We do have
:07:02. > :07:06.some unsettled weather with us for the end of the year and for the
:07:07. > :07:11.start of next year as well. Tomorrow is a windy day, some rain at first,
:07:12. > :07:16.but it is clear for some sunshine, with still a few showers tomorrow
:07:17. > :07:21.afternoon. At the moment we are in between two weather systems, some
:07:22. > :07:24.dry weather with us at the moment, but by tomorrow, this cold front
:07:25. > :07:28.will sweep in bringing rain and windy conditions. On Wednesday, we
:07:29. > :07:44.are looking at fairly heavy rain along with some particularly strong
:07:45. > :07:47.winds for New Year's Day. For the moment, we have clear skies and as
:07:48. > :07:50.we go through the night, Cloud will increase, some rain will arrive and
:07:51. > :07:52.these winds will pick up as well. A mild night with temperatures no
:07:53. > :07:54.lower than eight degrees. First thing tomorrow, cloudy with
:07:55. > :07:56.outbreaks of rain. Into tomorrow afternoon, we will see some sunshine
:07:57. > :08:01.as well with the chance of a shower. Still quite breezy tomorrow, but the
:08:02. > :08:07.winds are not as strong, temperatures up to 11 degrees. At
:08:08. > :08:12.sea tomorrow, the South and south`westerly winds are forced five
:08:13. > :08:20.to six. Some rain and showers at sea, and the week ahead contains
:08:21. > :08:24.some wet weather, particularly on Wednesday, some heavy rain along
:08:25. > :08:28.with some strong winds and once that clears, Thursday and Friday, still
:08:29. > :08:39.some heavy showers. I will be back at 10pm. Goodbye.
:08:40. > :08:46.Another day off strong winds, heavy rain and flooding. At least things
:08:47. > :08:50.are quiet at the moment. The rain has cleared off and the wind is
:08:51. > :08:56.lighter. There might be some ice in Scotland, but through the night, the
:08:57. > :09:02.wind picks up, lifting temperatures, but more heavy rain pushing in. The
:09:03. > :09:06.rain band is not quite a significant us today, but it will leave surface
:09:07. > :09:12.water flooding. Some heavy bursts clearing Northern Ireland by first
:09:13. > :09:17.light. It reaches the east coast by the time we get to lunchtime, after
:09:18. > :09:23.a few morning showers. The wind is falling lighter, easing down from
:09:24. > :09:27.the gusty nature. A bit of sunshine through the afternoon. The
:09:28. > :09:28.temperature is a bit higher than they should be at this stage of
