:00:00. > :00:20.Welcome to a new week. Our top story: Up in flames, firefighters

:00:21. > :00:32.investigate what caused this fire at a holiday camp in Jersey. The whole

:00:33. > :00:37.village was on fire. Gale force winds and stormy seas `` the Channel

:00:38. > :00:43.Islands. It trembled with the force of the waves. I will have a full

:00:44. > :00:49.weather forecasts late in the programme. Why Christmas and New

:00:50. > :01:05.Year was something special for this teenager. Jersey Fire and Rescue

:01:06. > :01:11.Service says a fire at a holiday camp should be treated as arson

:01:12. > :01:20.Firefighters were called to Plemont. Some of the buildings will

:01:21. > :01:24.have to be destroyed. This is what confronted firefighters on Saturday

:01:25. > :01:28.morning. When they arrived just after six o'clock, the flames had

:01:29. > :01:33.already engulfed the central part of the derelict holiday camp. It took

:01:34. > :01:39.more than 20 firefighters to put it out. They were here dampening down

:01:40. > :01:44.until yesterday morning. The teams worked really well in Hull `` hard

:01:45. > :01:52.conditions to achieve a really good results. We managed to contain the

:01:53. > :01:58.fire. Embers were flying around We did really well to stop it

:01:59. > :02:06.spreading. Now the firefighters say it should be now treated as arson.

:02:07. > :02:10.They are not sure yet whether it was started deliberately or

:02:11. > :02:15.accidentally. An investigation could take three weeks because the

:02:16. > :02:20.structure is not safe. It is too dangerous for the fire service to go

:02:21. > :02:23.in and that is why they have got constant security patrols here to

:02:24. > :02:28.make sure no one goes near until the building is come `` the buildings

:02:29. > :02:31.can finally be demolished. There were plans to demolish the site and

:02:32. > :02:37.build new homes but these were put on hold after a parish appeal. The

:02:38. > :02:42.architect representing the developer says the fighters and allow them to

:02:43. > :02:47.demolish all of the buildings. Until batter is resolved, we cannot do any

:02:48. > :02:54.demolition. We have to see an agreement before any works can be

:02:55. > :02:58.done. Clearly the other buildings on the site will remain standing until

:02:59. > :03:05.we have a fully valid planning permit that isn't stopped by any

:03:06. > :03:08.appeal. In the meantime, with exposed asbestos and loose debris,

:03:09. > :03:16.people are being warned to stay well away from the site. A part of

:03:17. > :03:22.Guernsey's Maine coast road remains closed this evening as stormy steers

:03:23. > :03:31.`` Swami `` stormy seas have continued to lash the island. It has

:03:32. > :03:42.been a busy start to the year for many tradesmen. This is a dangerous

:03:43. > :03:48.place to be. These people were knocked off their feet near Perelle.

:03:49. > :03:55.Traffickers had to make way for daybreak as roads were closed and

:03:56. > :04:01.properties battered by the waves. The house, it was as if somebody had

:04:02. > :04:09.thumped it. It trembled with the force of the waves. This is the

:04:10. > :04:17.worst I have known. I have been here for 50 years. It has never been as

:04:18. > :04:22.bad as this. As people count the cost of the storm damage, tradesmen

:04:23. > :04:27.here have told me that they are in demand as they are called upon to

:04:28. > :04:31.room `` repair damaged properties. It is terrible at the moment with

:04:32. > :04:38.the wind and the leaks we have had to fix. We have been so busy. We

:04:39. > :04:45.have had to put polythene on top but the wind is lifting. It is chaos.

:04:46. > :04:50.Work wise, it is quite good for us but tough on some of the people but

:04:51. > :04:55.the damage that has been caused While the brisk wind has been a boom

:04:56. > :05:08.for businesses, the question is when will it stop? Emily will have a full

:05:09. > :05:11.forecast in a few minutes. More news and Guernsey's Health Minister says

:05:12. > :05:17.he will not be resigning it `` resigning over made for bowel cancer

:05:18. > :05:21.screening. He wrongly told the stage there was no money left for the

:05:22. > :05:28.screening programme. In reality the development had spent the allocated

:05:29. > :05:34.budget. `` told the States. I made an error which I regret and it was

:05:35. > :05:38.made in good faith. It is not a resigning issue. The information was

:05:39. > :05:42.given to me in good faith. It is not a resigning issue. If we had a

:05:43. > :05:47.political system where every time somebody made an error, we will have

:05:48. > :05:54.to resign, we would have an unstable government. There was an in`class ``

:05:55. > :05:57.increase in the Channel Islands air search. This is what the year will

:05:58. > :06:01.be remembered for when the aeroplane crash landed in Jersey in November

:06:02. > :06:08.with the crew escaping uninjured. Plans are on track to get the

:06:09. > :06:13.service up and running again. There will be extra slots on the Guernsey

:06:14. > :06:21.London to Gatwick route. The airline will operate five flights on a

:06:22. > :06:32.Saturday. It will leave Guernsey on 830 AM. `` it would leave Guernsey

:06:33. > :06:39.at 830 AM. It is hoped the Advanchi card will speed up boarding times

:06:40. > :06:42.and unable cheaper cards and journeys for students. They put

:06:43. > :06:51.their student card onto the machine, place it done. The Green Knight goes

:06:52. > :07:00.on and the ticket comes out. `` the green light comes on. These are the

:07:01. > :07:06.replacement cards. You can only use your paper tickets at school time to

:07:07. > :07:11.get you to school and college. They can now top the card up and use it

:07:12. > :07:17.seven days a week. A lot of the students in further education get

:07:18. > :07:23.queried on age at the weekends to get the student fares. With this

:07:24. > :07:27.pass, it shows in the beholder of the ticket and are entitled to a

:07:28. > :07:37.student there. This is also being rolled out to regular bus users

:07:38. > :07:46.They hope the new system will mean it will speed up bus journeys. Today

:07:47. > :07:50.is traditionally the day that we take down our Christmas tree but for

:07:51. > :07:53.one Jersey teenager, this will have been the first time he has been able

:07:54. > :07:57.to cope with having one in`house. Then suffers from Chronic

:07:58. > :08:02.Granulomatous Disorder which leaves the body feeling vulnerable to

:08:03. > :08:05.infection that a life`saving transplant has meant he was able to

:08:06. > :08:12.celebrate the festive season like the rest of us. From birth, that has

:08:13. > :08:17.battled a rare genetic disorders dust condition. His body couldn t

:08:18. > :08:23.fight bacterial or fungal infections properly. Trees, dab and just had to

:08:24. > :08:28.be avoided so this summer then underwent life`saving treatment A

:08:29. > :08:33.bathing marrow transplant. He was captain isolation. `` a bone marrow

:08:34. > :08:38.transplant. He was kept in an isolated room for eight weeks. It

:08:39. > :08:49.was tough for my mum and dad to watch me being unwell everyday. I

:08:50. > :08:53.became claustrophobic in the room. This shows him receiving the

:08:54. > :08:57.transplant in London. It is the most effective treatment for Chronic

:08:58. > :09:03.Granulomatous Disorder, which is so where it affects just one in 4

:09:04. > :09:10.million people. By having a bone marrow transplant, it replaces your

:09:11. > :09:16.blood cells with those that you have been transplanted from. The source

:09:17. > :09:23.of the problem in the disease relates to cells which are produced

:09:24. > :09:28.in the bone marrow. Has a replacement marrow which will have

:09:29. > :09:31.fully functional cells. He is expected to fully overcome the

:09:32. > :09:35.illness and his remarkable story has hit the headlines in Jersey. He is

:09:36. > :09:40.now looking forward to living a normal life without worrying about

:09:41. > :09:49.keeping infections at bay. It has been a painful year. It is so good

:09:50. > :09:54.to be out the other side and I am looking forward to 2014 and seeing

:09:55. > :10:03.what that holds. He knows none of it would have been possible without his

:10:04. > :10:06.bone marrow donor. He hopes he can one day meet the person that has

:10:07. > :10:11.changed and saves his life `` saved his life. Earlier you saw the impact

:10:12. > :10:16.the bad weather has been having in Guernsey.

:10:17. > :10:21.Our video journalist shot these pictures at the beach at St Ouen

:10:22. > :10:27.earlier. Now we have the weather details.

:10:28. > :10:35.We have some strong winds with us to start the week. For two nights, the

:10:36. > :10:48.strong winds are continuing. We have a flooding risk around the coast. We

:10:49. > :10:55.have a high tide tonight. We have had some large waves throughout the

:10:56. > :10:59.day. Food tomorrow, the wind starts to ease. There could be persistent

:11:00. > :11:03.rain for the middle part of this week. We are looking at a mixture of

:11:04. > :11:09.sunshine and showers. Lighter winds by the time you get Friday. This is

:11:10. > :11:13.the satellite picture from earlier. The card has been sweeping around

:11:14. > :11:18.throughout the day and it is wrapped around this large area of low

:11:19. > :11:25.pressure. There is this low pressure which has caused a big swell. Strong

:11:26. > :11:31.winds are adding to this. By tomorrow lunchtime, it will still be

:11:32. > :11:35.a windy day. We have a weather friends nearby. The showers become

:11:36. > :11:43.more prolonged for a time as we go through the afternoon. `` we have a

:11:44. > :11:49.weather front nearby. There is uncertainty around the positioning

:11:50. > :11:54.of the wind. We have some showers around and they could be happy with

:11:55. > :12:04.the risk of some hail and thunder. We have gusty winds through the

:12:05. > :12:15.night. Temperatures are no longer `` lower than nine Celsius. There is

:12:16. > :12:22.quite a few showers but they will be easing and we will see some sunshine

:12:23. > :12:24.for a time. Overall, a mixture through the afternoon tomorrow with

:12:25. > :12:51.temperatures reaching 11 Celsius tomorrow.

:12:52. > :13:00.The rest of the week, we have a mixture but more sunshine on

:13:01. > :13:04.Thursday and Friday. BBC Radio Devon is a Jersey will have travel updates

:13:05. > :13:17.in the morning. That is it for now. Goodbye.

:13:18. > :13:25.And you can watch the whole story tonight on Inside Out at 7:30pm here

:13:26. > :13:28.on BBC One. Missed hospital appointments in the

:13:29. > :13:31.South West are costing the NHS millions of pounds. Last year alone

:13:32. > :13:34.more than 165,000 people failed to turn up for consultations. New

:13:35. > :13:41.reminder services are now being introduced.

:13:42. > :13:47.Almost 500,000 people walked through these doors to be treated every

:13:48. > :13:52.year. But not everyone turns up to their outpatient appointment. Before

:13:53. > :13:58.a telephone reminder service was introduced, almost 8% of patients

:13:59. > :14:03.failed to tell the hospital they couldn't attend. Brian got a

:14:04. > :14:08.reminder for his appointment a few days ago.

:14:09. > :14:13.I found them very good. Very often you just phone them back and confirm

:14:14. > :14:17.the appointment and that is it, all done.

:14:18. > :14:21.Wasted appointments are costing the NHS millions every year but there

:14:22. > :14:26.have been big changes since it started the remainder service.

:14:27. > :14:34.Compared now to them, 12,000 more patients are getting care than they

:14:35. > :14:38.should. For as, in terms of results, it puts us up in the top ten for

:14:39. > :14:42.getting patients to attend on the day.

:14:43. > :14:46.But during the last financial year, almost 13,000 people `` 30,000

:14:47. > :15:10.people didn't attend. At the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

:15:11. > :15:14.40,000 patients didn't turn up. It is now hoping that its new telephone

:15:15. > :15:21.remainder service will reduce that figure. Dorset County Hospital is

:15:22. > :15:26.looking to do the same. They are apparently losing ?3 million every

:15:27. > :15:32.year. They are looking at new technology to reduce the rates even

:15:33. > :15:36.further but the best solution, they say, would be for patients to let

:15:37. > :15:39.them know if they cannot turn up. Time for the sport and tonight we've

:15:40. > :15:43.got news on Torquay United's new manager and he's someone we all know

:15:44. > :15:46.very well here, isn't he, Dave? Yes, he's 41`year`old Chris

:15:47. > :15:50.Hargreaves, who's been announced as the successor to Alan Knill, who was

:15:51. > :15:53.sacked four days ago. Hargreaves was first`team coach at Championship

:15:54. > :15:59.club Bournemouth and is a regular football pundit for BBC Spotlight.

:16:00. > :16:07.It's not the biggest surprise that Chris got the job, is it?

:16:08. > :16:11.It isn't. He is well respected and was captain of Torquay United five

:16:12. > :16:16.years ago when he scored the first goal in the 2009 play`off final in

:16:17. > :16:30.League Two. How do you think he'll get on?

:16:31. > :16:37.He has got to cut his teeth. They are taking on the bottom of the

:16:38. > :16:40.table team. They were caught out by a late equaliser.

:16:41. > :16:53.Who'll be assisting him at Plainmoor?

:16:54. > :17:06.Lee Hodges, who you Mayra member has plenty of experience. It will be

:17:07. > :17:09.interesting times ahead. Plymouth Argyle look forward to an

:17:10. > :17:18.FA Cup replay after fighting back from two goals down at Port Vale

:17:19. > :17:21.yesterday. Top scorer Reuben Reid started the revival early in the

:17:22. > :17:24.second half, before 17`year`old Ben Purrington completed the comeback

:17:25. > :17:28.with his first goal for the Pilgrims. The replay will be at Home

:17:29. > :17:31.Park on Tuesday week with the winners facing Brighton at home.

:17:32. > :17:33.Yeovil Town face a daunting fourth round tie at Premier League

:17:34. > :17:37.Southampton after despatching Leyton Orient 4`0 at Huish Park. Two from

:17:38. > :17:39.James Hayter and one each from Joel Grant and Kieffer Moore saw them

:17:40. > :17:42.through. Exeter Chiefs have dropped to eighth

:17:43. > :17:45.in rugby's Premiership after an agonising 19`16 defeat at London

:17:46. > :17:48.Wasps. They led 13`3 at half`time through a Dave Lewis try and the

:17:49. > :17:51.supplementaries from Henry Slade. But at 16`16, there was controversy

:17:52. > :17:55.when Slade's effort was ruled out. To rub salt into the Chiefs' wounds,

:17:56. > :17:58.Andy Goode won it for Wasps with a last minute drop goal.

:17:59. > :18:01.In the Championship, Plymouth Albion scored the only try in their 15`14

:18:02. > :18:07.home defeat to Leeds through captain Rory Cushion. They'd have won it if

:18:08. > :18:12.Declan Cusack's late drop goal had been successful.

:18:13. > :18:16.A Taunton volleyball player has become the first British woman to

:18:17. > :18:18.compete in one of her sport's biggest competitions, even though

:18:19. > :18:23.the British team went out of existence after the London Olympics.

:18:24. > :18:27.Keyra Michael has just finished her first season in Italy, playing in

:18:28. > :18:34.the European Champions League. Here's Ollie Williams.

:18:35. > :18:40.Welcome to the home of British volleyball which doesn't look

:18:41. > :18:47.massively British because it isn't. You can see the beautiful city.

:18:48. > :18:53.This is Italy, the new home of Keyra Michael, one of the few British

:18:54. > :18:58.professional players left in the year after these historic scenes.

:18:59. > :19:01.Within months of winning a game for the first time, the team was shut

:19:02. > :19:18.down. The team was disbanded so there is

:19:19. > :19:27.no longer a team. At six foot five, she has signed up

:19:28. > :19:33.as a middle blocker for this team in Milan. They play and one of the top

:19:34. > :19:39.competitions in the world. Ciara grew up in Somerset is the first

:19:40. > :19:47.British player to reach this level. I remember reading a quote before

:19:48. > :19:55.London 2012 we said, every member of Team GB has the responsibility to

:19:56. > :19:58.inspire the nation. I would really like to think that I can inspire

:19:59. > :20:06.kids by being here. Good for her. And at this time

:20:07. > :20:09.tomorrow, we'll be introducing you to Torquay's new manager ` that's if

:20:10. > :20:21.he needs any introduction, of course. Many people are now likely

:20:22. > :20:25.to have to work into their 70s but working into old age is nothing new

:20:26. > :20:26.for many people here in the south west.

:20:27. > :20:29.The region already has a higher proportion of older workers than the

:20:30. > :20:32.UK average. In fact, Spotlight's Greg Wade has been to meet a couple

:20:33. > :20:54.who are still working in their 80s. At 91, Ethel Morley still makes this

:20:55. > :20:56.small business sing. Started in 1975, the family`run firm

:20:57. > :21:02.manufactured dry suits and embroidered garments such as polo

:21:03. > :21:08.shirts. It wasn't a conscious decision to

:21:09. > :21:14.stay at work. You just get up in the morning and go to the same place and

:21:15. > :21:19.one day you are old. Age is really just a number.

:21:20. > :21:21.But by the time you get to 90 it doesn't really matter too much, does

:21:22. > :21:24.it? It doesn't matter anyway.

:21:25. > :21:29.Their son Roger, a mere 60, thinks age isn't a barrier to employment.

:21:30. > :21:32.In fact, quite the opposite. They've got quite a lifetime of

:21:33. > :21:40.knowledge about garments and technical stuff so there is a wealth

:21:41. > :21:44.of knowledge to be had from there. You have to be active, you have to

:21:45. > :21:48.keep active and if you are not physically active, you've got to be

:21:49. > :21:53.brain active. If you want to work, work. Especially if you need the

:21:54. > :21:57.money. Because this business is run by its

:21:58. > :21:59.members, they can decide when to retire. Other workers may look on in

:22:00. > :22:16.envy. Do you think we will still be here

:22:17. > :22:21.doing this in our 70s and 80s? I don't think they will let us!

:22:22. > :22:25.Now, there aren't many women who'd say no to being given a diamond on

:22:26. > :22:27.Christmas Day. But for one woman in Exmouth, her diamond came in rather

:22:28. > :22:31.an unusual way. Yes, this particular gem didn't come

:22:32. > :22:34.gift wrapped and involved a fair amount of work just to find.

:22:35. > :22:42.Spotlight's Andrea Ormsby has the story.

:22:43. > :22:46.Meets Jack, a trainee police dog. He has lived with Angie Collins for

:22:47. > :22:52.about seven months. He is a great character, very

:22:53. > :22:59.gentle, they do call him Gentle Jack.

:23:00. > :23:05.No other dog has done what Jack did just before Christmas.

:23:06. > :23:12.It was a fantastic, lovely calm morning. We were relaxing and I

:23:13. > :23:16.popped out into the kitchen and there was my ring on the floor,

:23:17. > :23:24.mangled. Mangled and missing the diamond. I

:23:25. > :23:30.think, I'm not overly sure, that the ring costs the best part of ?18,000.

:23:31. > :23:35.The husband and I emptied the entire room, which took hours, and I could

:23:36. > :23:39.only conclude that Jack had eaten it.

:23:40. > :23:45.So what to do? Is the vet explained, it was a

:23:46. > :23:53.simple process of waiting and saving. By Christmas Day I had given

:23:54. > :23:59.up and the vet gave me advice that it was very unlikely that I would

:24:00. > :24:04.get it back. I thought this is futile and just give up but that

:24:05. > :24:09.last wee bit of effort, the sun was shining and there it was. I just

:24:10. > :24:14.couldn't believe it. My face must have been a picture.

:24:15. > :24:19.Now they are making the most of Jack before he starts his as a police

:24:20. > :24:25.dog, were stealing diamonds really would be frowned upon.

:24:26. > :24:32.I love the innocent look on the dog's face. Let's see if the weather

:24:33. > :24:33.is going to get any better after the horrendous storms. That way behind

:24:34. > :24:42.you look threatening. We are starting off with strong

:24:43. > :24:48.winds but they do use of later in the week. Otherwise we are looking

:24:49. > :24:56.at the mixture of sunshine and showers. We do still have a weather

:24:57. > :25:05.warning out from The Met office. There is still the risk of further

:25:06. > :25:13.flooding. The high tide times are between 8:30pm and 10:30pm tonight.

:25:14. > :25:18.Keep an eye on the flight line number. As we can see from these

:25:19. > :25:28.pictures taken in Exeter, we do still have problems with flooding.

:25:29. > :25:35.We do have some drier weather to come later on this week so the

:25:36. > :25:41.chance is that these. To recede but many areas are still having flood

:25:42. > :25:47.warnings. For the moment, we do have this area of cloud wrapped around a

:25:48. > :25:58.deep area of low pressure. It is causing a large swell of big waves.

:25:59. > :26:05.It is still quite windy but we will start to see some sunshine. This

:26:06. > :26:08.rain should move on and the winds will be lighter by Wednesday. We
