:00:00. > :00:07.from the Atlantic. Thank you very much. That's it from us. On

:00:08. > :00:16.Hello. Welcome to Friday's BBC Channel Islands news. Our top

:00:17. > :00:19.stories: Cleared for take off ` Aurigny and Blue Islands are given

:00:20. > :00:25.the green light to join forces on the Guernsey`Jersey air link, but

:00:26. > :00:29.will prices rise as a result? It is better for it to go ahead and

:00:30. > :00:34.preserve some competition on the route than to allow the status quo

:00:35. > :00:37.to continue. Also, the new man at Jersey Rugby

:00:38. > :00:42.Club, but can Harvey Biljon turn the club's fortunes around after a

:00:43. > :00:46.disappointing season? I have had a chance to speak to the players this

:00:47. > :00:48.week and we have put it behind us and we will drive forward.

:00:49. > :00:49.And we're given rare behind`the`scenes access with

:00:50. > :01:08.Jersey's firearms unit. Aurigny and Blue Islands are joining

:01:09. > :01:11.forces on the Guernsey to Jersey air link. The two airlines will be

:01:12. > :01:15.working together on the inter`island route following permission by the

:01:16. > :01:19.competition regulator. It means whichever airline you book with

:01:20. > :01:25.you'll end up on a Blue Islands plane. Penny Elderfield reports

:01:26. > :01:29.Joining forces on one of Guernsey's key air links. Aurigny and Blue

:01:30. > :01:39.Islands have been given the go ahead to merge on the Guernsey to Jersey

:01:40. > :01:42.route. We have been provided with compelling evidence that it was very

:01:43. > :01:46.likely that in the very short`term one of them would leave the route if

:01:47. > :01:51.this was not permitted. Our judgement is that having some

:01:52. > :01:54.competition on the route for consumers is a better outcome than

:01:55. > :01:57.having a monopoly. Passengers will still be able to book individually

:01:58. > :02:01.with Aurigny and indeed Blue Islands. The only difference will be

:02:02. > :02:04.that it'll only be a Blue Islands plane that operates on the route.

:02:05. > :02:08.And reassurances have also been given that what we pay shouldn't

:02:09. > :02:12.change that much. How it'll work is Aurigny will pay Blue Islands for a

:02:13. > :02:16.set number of seats on each flight, but it'll be up to each airline what

:02:17. > :02:19.they charge. Blue Islands will then run the service with six or seven

:02:20. > :02:25.flights each weekday and seven at the weekends. And there was concern

:02:26. > :02:32.about having a less frequent service. What we have done is

:02:33. > :02:36.imposed a condition that requires the airlines to take reasonable

:02:37. > :02:40.efforts to increase capacity if it looks likely to be necessary to meet

:02:41. > :02:44.demand. Both airlines say it should make the route more financially

:02:45. > :02:47.viable in the long term. And that work's now under way to make the

:02:48. > :02:52.first joint Aurigny and Blue Islands flight happen.

:02:53. > :02:55.A Jersey man has appeared in the Royal Court charged with making

:02:56. > :02:57.indecent movies and pictures of children. 29`year`old James

:02:58. > :03:00.Christopher Videgrain admits making 89 indecent movies and nearly 1 500

:03:01. > :03:03.pictures of children between 20 7 and March last year. He'll be

:03:04. > :03:10.sentenced by the Royal Court next month.

:03:11. > :03:14.A new era began at Jersey Rugby Club this week as the new head coach

:03:15. > :03:17.Harvey Biljon arrived in the island. His appointment came after the

:03:18. > :03:20.director of rugby, Ben Harvey, quit last month, after six defeats in a

:03:21. > :03:24.row for the club. Earlier I asked him how worried he is about the

:03:25. > :03:32.possibility of coming to a club that might drop out the Championship next

:03:33. > :03:36.season. To be honest, it is about not looking behind us, it is about

:03:37. > :03:39.looking forward. I have had the chance to speak to the players this

:03:40. > :03:45.week and we are going to drive forward. What will you do to put

:03:46. > :03:48.your stamp on Jersey Rob club? I think it is going to be about

:03:49. > :04:00.getting the best out of the players `` Jersey Rob the club. We need to

:04:01. > :04:09.make sure they know what it means to the island. Steve Boden is taking

:04:10. > :04:12.charge of tomorrow's match. I have given him the responsibility over

:04:13. > :04:17.the next two weeks because it gives me the opportunity to see how things

:04:18. > :04:21.are run and to watch the players a little bit more closely than I would

:04:22. > :04:25.do if I was leading. I think he has done a really good job as interim

:04:26. > :04:31.head coach. I am comfortable with him continuing over the next two

:04:32. > :04:33.weeks. There has been some component that urine concern that more

:04:34. > :04:42.islanders need to get behind the club. `` there has been some concern

:04:43. > :04:52.that. Do you share that? I think the rugby club needs to reconnect with

:04:53. > :04:57.the community. I think it is just the first step of many that we will

:04:58. > :05:07.be making to weaken up `` to reconnect and hopefully will get the

:05:08. > :05:12.island ofs' support. You know some of the Cornish Pirates. I do not

:05:13. > :05:16.know whether it makes them more nervous. It will be great to have

:05:17. > :05:27.guys to go to who have worked with me because they know my

:05:28. > :05:31.expectations. Harvey Biljon there and a reminder

:05:32. > :05:35.Jersey Rugby Club take on the Ulster Ravens in the British and Irish Cup.

:05:36. > :05:38.Kick off is at 3pm at St Peter. Live commentary on BBC Radio Jersey.

:05:39. > :05:41.Work to improve the pitch at Guernsey's main stadium is being

:05:42. > :05:44.hailed a success. Last season drainage problems at Footes Lane

:05:45. > :05:47.Stadium led to a huge backlog of sports fixtures. But so far this

:05:48. > :05:51.season, the pitch is holding up well. Mike Wilkins reports.

:05:52. > :05:54.Remember this? Desperate attempts to use a helicopter to try and dry the

:05:55. > :05:58.waterlogged pitch at Footes Lane last season. A trench was dug every

:05:59. > :06:03.metre of the 100m pitch, with 1 0 tonnes of gravel and 170 tonnes of

:06:04. > :06:11.sand used to improve the drainage. And it seems to have worked. It has

:06:12. > :06:14.cost around ?10,000 to make the improvements to the pitch. Some

:06:15. > :06:19.would say it is money well spent because this season there has been a

:06:20. > :06:24.marked improvement compared to last season when so many matches were

:06:25. > :06:29.called off. There is no water. Looking at the rain we had last

:06:30. > :06:37.week, the guys were not even muddy. The pictures in perfect condition.

:06:38. > :06:42.We have had debates with other teams about who has the best pitch. This

:06:43. > :06:45.pitch is in great condition because of the work that goes into it. For

:06:46. > :06:49.the man responsible, he's understandably having a better

:06:50. > :06:53.season this year. For this time of year, to go halfway through the

:06:54. > :07:00.season and have it in the condition it is in with rugby and football

:07:01. > :07:03.playing on it, it is nice. It is nice for me because it is not so

:07:04. > :07:09.much of a worry. Last year was an absolute nightmare. Yes, it is nice

:07:10. > :07:16.to get the comments we get now. Also, last year, it was not nice to

:07:17. > :07:20.get those comments! For Shane though, the work continues and he

:07:21. > :07:27.expects the pitch to be even better in the future.

:07:28. > :07:30.Armed police became a familiar sight on Jersey's streets during court

:07:31. > :07:33.appearances of the drugs baron Curtis Warren. But that's just one

:07:34. > :07:37.type of incident the firearms unit deals with. So, how do the officers

:07:38. > :07:40.train and how much does it cost Louise Walter reports.

:07:41. > :07:44.On a wet Tuesday morning in the north of Jersey, police carry out an

:07:45. > :07:52.armed raid. This is a training exercise regularly undertaken by

:07:53. > :08:01.specialist firearms officers. But this type of search has been carried

:08:02. > :08:04.out three times this year for real. The emphasis on training is about

:08:05. > :08:09.prevention. We have to be in a position, being an island, to be

:08:10. > :08:13.able to respond appropriately and proportionately to any threat we may

:08:14. > :08:17.face. The firearms team can be deployed up to 18 times a year. Some

:08:18. > :08:20.incidents are pre`planned, like this armed presence at court appearances

:08:21. > :08:28.of the UK drugs baron Curtis Warren. Others are spontaneous. The reality

:08:29. > :08:32.is that when a live job comes in, you want your training to kick in.

:08:33. > :08:37.All of the time we spend up here, doing drills, that will come into

:08:38. > :08:41.play if the live job comes in which obviously we hope it will not. It

:08:42. > :08:45.costs several thousands each year to train and equip the 30 firearms

:08:46. > :08:53.officers. But despite the low level of incidents, bosses say Jersey must

:08:54. > :08:57.be prepared. There is no cavalry coming here to help us out. We must

:08:58. > :09:04.make sure we are properly equipped and trained to deal with any threat

:09:05. > :09:08.or harm or threat to the island Back at the training centre, the

:09:09. > :09:11.hard work continues. These officers know that should a real incident

:09:12. > :09:18.come in, they're armed with the skills to deal with it.

:09:19. > :09:22.Before we find out what the weather has in store for us, we've got

:09:23. > :09:26.something to brighten up your weekend. Take a look at Benny the

:09:27. > :09:30.dog taking a stroll on the beach at Greve de Lecq in Jersey. The photo

:09:31. > :09:33.was taken by his owner during the recent bad weather. It's fair to say

:09:34. > :09:36.the spaniel's taken the nation's media by storm. Not only has he

:09:37. > :09:41.featured in British tabloids, but he's also had around 2,000 likes and

:09:42. > :09:42.hundreds of comments on Facebook. He even has his own agent. Whatever

:09:43. > :09:52.next? ! We are starting to see the cloud

:09:53. > :09:56.thicken and build. There will be light patchy rain in the forecast

:09:57. > :10:02.overnight. Tomorrow and the start of the weekend, I mostly dry day. More

:10:03. > :10:06.sunshine building especially in the afternoon. Becoming cloudy with the

:10:07. > :10:12.prospect of rainfall Sunday. A weak weather front will bring light

:10:13. > :10:18.patchy rain by the early hours of tonight. It will clear by Saturday

:10:19. > :10:22.morning. Tomorrow, plenty in the way of sunshine and light winds as

:10:23. > :10:27.pressure builds for the time. But the next weather system bringing

:10:28. > :10:31.further cloud and rain and strong winds comes in late on Sunday. This

:10:32. > :10:35.evening, the cloud is beginning to build. It will thicken overnight. We

:10:36. > :10:41.will start to see the light patchy rain making its way towards us by

:10:42. > :10:46.the early hours. Tomorrow morning, the rain will make its way across

:10:47. > :10:49.us. Hit and miss. It will clear By tomorrow during the day, much more

:10:50. > :10:56.in the way of sunshine. Dry conditions. Light winds. The coastal

:10:57. > :11:05.waters forecast for tomorrow... The winds are westerly. Becoming

:11:06. > :11:22.variable, 1`3. The times of high water...

:11:23. > :11:32.The outlook ` tomorrow looks to be the better day of the weekend. Once

:11:33. > :11:39.the cloud breaks, we will see the back of the light rain. It will feel

:11:40. > :11:43.quite crisp. The winds will be light. Sunday, the next area of low

:11:44. > :11:45.pressure heads towards us bringing more cloud and rain. Rather

:11:46. > :11:52.unsettled for the start of next week.

:11:53. > :11:55.Coming up in Spotlight, find out why a ferret with an attitude problem is

:11:56. > :12:03.being sent to an isolation ring because he cannot make friends ``

:12:04. > :12:10.isolation wing. Thanks for watching. Have a good evening.

:12:11. > :12:15.are alleged to have taken place last year. He has been released on bail

:12:16. > :12:19.and will face trial later this year. The largest joint police operation

:12:20. > :12:21.of its kind in the country to ways in Plymouth overnight, targeting

:12:22. > :12:24.illegal drug use. 40 officers, along with sniffer dogs from the Navy,

:12:25. > :12:28.Devon and Cornwall Police and the MoD took part in the patrols in the

:12:29. > :12:34.city centre. `` took place in Plymouth. Spotlight's Anna Varle

:12:35. > :12:41.went out with them. Two teams, three sniffer dogs and

:12:42. > :12:44.undercover CID. Their first stop was the Union Rooms. The officers

:12:45. > :12:49.secured the site and then the dogs were sent in. There were 150 patrons

:12:50. > :12:56.within the pub. It was surrounded by officers, secured and the successful

:12:57. > :13:03.drug search was completed with no arrests. No arrests? None. Is that

:13:04. > :13:07.surprising? Not surprising. Hopefully that is indicative of the

:13:08. > :13:11.rest of the night. This was just the first of eight bars and clubs to be

:13:12. > :13:14.searched. Many of the officers had never worked together before. We

:13:15. > :13:18.have started working on lot more closely with Devon and Cornwall

:13:19. > :13:22.Police and our volition chip has flourished. It seemed only right and

:13:23. > :13:24.proper that we moved to the next scale and escalate things to the

:13:25. > :13:29.next level and move our operations in and work together. The goal of

:13:30. > :13:35.the operation was to test whether combining operation of resources on

:13:36. > :13:38.such a larger scale would work in detecting drug use in personnel and

:13:39. > :13:43.civilians. The naval police were responsible for arresting those in

:13:44. > :13:45.the forces. Devon and Cornwall officers were concentrating on

:13:46. > :13:49.everyone else. The military police have a much tougher set of

:13:50. > :13:56.regulations around the use of drugs. The tolerance drug policy. For them,

:13:57. > :13:59.it is a greater level of punishment. The police say that

:14:00. > :14:02.Plymouth has no greater problem with drug use than any other busy city in

:14:03. > :14:06.the country. But what they have been doing for the last nine months is

:14:07. > :14:10.focusing on the higher offences, the drug trafficking offences, not the

:14:11. > :14:14.straight possession offences that we have seen tonight. That is what this

:14:15. > :14:16.operation is all about. It is going to kick`start a new way of making

:14:17. > :14:21.sure premises Mickeys remain drug`free. `` premises like these.

:14:22. > :14:28.There have been eight was that of detection. One female has been

:14:29. > :14:32.arrested. On the partnership side, all for half a foot together. It has

:14:33. > :14:39.gone smoothly and we look forward to further working together in the

:14:40. > :14:42.future. `` we have worked very well together.

:14:43. > :14:46.With ever`increasing cuts to the forces, it is hoped that pooling

:14:47. > :14:50.resources will significantly reduce drug misuse in the city.

:14:51. > :14:58.Time for the sport and Dave's here with a new bowling sensation in

:14:59. > :15:00.English cricket. It's about time we had one!

:15:01. > :15:02.You can say that again but don't. Hello.

:15:03. > :15:05.Exeter Chiefs, virtually out of rugby's European Heineken Cup, can

:15:06. > :15:08.still qualify for the Challenge Cup, providing they win their final two

:15:09. > :15:11.pool ties ` Glasgow Warriors at Sandy Park tomorrow and at Cardiff

:15:12. > :15:14.Blues in a week's time. Dave Lewis retains his place as

:15:15. > :15:17.scrum`half after scoring for the Chiefs in last week's narrow loss to

:15:18. > :15:20.Wasps. Henry Slade partners him at fly`half, while full`back Luke

:15:21. > :15:25.Arscott captains Exeter. Head coach Rob Baxter makes 11 changes in

:15:26. > :15:28.total. Well, we're halfway through the

:15:29. > :15:32.football season and Yeovil Town need to reenergise if they're to avoid an

:15:33. > :15:35.immediate return to League One. It's a difficult start to the second

:15:36. > :15:38.half of the Championship campaign for manager Gary Johnson against the

:15:39. > :15:44.second`placed team Burnley at Huish Park. The big match in League Two is

:15:45. > :15:48.at Home Park, where two in`form teams meet head on ` Plymouth Argyle

:15:49. > :15:52.and Southend. Jason Banton is back at Argyle after re`joining them from

:15:53. > :15:55.Crystal Palace on a permanent basis. The 21`year`old scored six goals

:15:56. > :16:06.whilst on loan at the Pilgrims last season. Even though we were in a

:16:07. > :16:10.relegation battle last year, I kind of played with the freedom of just

:16:11. > :16:13.being there to help. I really enjoyed it last year and hope fully

:16:14. > :16:16.more of the same. Exeter City have lost three out of

:16:17. > :16:19.their last four matches in League Two, so will need to stabilise at

:16:20. > :16:23.Bristol Rovers tomorrow. They've dropped into the lower half of the

:16:24. > :16:26.table and need another of their impressive away performances to give

:16:27. > :16:28.them a fillip. It's Chris Hargreaves' first match in charge of

:16:29. > :16:32.struggling Torquay United, after his appointment this week. It's at AFC

:16:33. > :16:39.Wimbledon, with the new incumbent admitting he's a little nervous

:16:40. > :16:43.about his managerial debut. I will be nervous in a good way, a good

:16:44. > :16:47.way. I am going to walk out there and be really proud that I have got

:16:48. > :16:50.a team and I am leading the team out and then I want them to look at me

:16:51. > :16:54.on that side and work for me. England's cricket team may be in

:16:55. > :16:57.tatters, but could a partnership in the South West help produce the next

:16:58. > :17:00.fast bowling star? Aadil Rashid has teamed up with former Somerset

:17:01. > :17:05.cricketer Steffan Jones in a bid to make his dream of bowling at 90mph a

:17:06. > :17:17.reality. Andy Birkett went to find out more.

:17:18. > :17:22.He may have hung up his boots but Stephan has now turned his attention

:17:23. > :17:27.to the next generation. And he has found the perfect people. He has the

:17:28. > :17:33.most biomechanical efficient action I have seen any youngster. It is

:17:34. > :17:36.really explosive at the crease. He has a long delivery stride, a

:17:37. > :17:41.greater delay on the right side of his body. He uses stored energy in

:17:42. > :17:49.his right side, in his hips. He can bowl genuinely quickly for his age.

:17:50. > :17:52.Yes just concerned `` he has just turned 16 and has moved from

:17:53. > :18:00.Birmingham to take advantage of Stephan's expertise. It is not just

:18:01. > :18:06.cricket, body wise, I have grown up and still maturing so I am learning

:18:07. > :18:11.every day. His training is tailored for power and speed but his bowling

:18:12. > :18:19.at 90 mph, is it a realistic ago? Bear I think it is incredibly

:18:20. > :18:24.realistic. `` with the structure and support I have, I think it is a

:18:25. > :18:28.great goal to achieve. His natural ability, I believe you can do it.

:18:29. > :18:32.England are crying out for fast bowlers at the moment. We do not

:18:33. > :18:36.have a Mitchell Johnson and I think we do have one here at this school.

:18:37. > :18:41.What is it being likes to get the other end? With your money where

:18:42. > :18:50.your mouth is! Put your pants on, yet in there and face him.

:18:51. > :18:54.Sensibly, I declined. Would you? ! We have Mitchell Johnson lined up

:18:55. > :18:56.for UNIX. Take care! Finally, the Zara Phillips`trained

:18:57. > :18:59.horse Youhavetoo features in the maiden race at Sunday's point to

:19:00. > :19:07.point meeting at Black Forest Lodge at Kenton near Exeter. The first

:19:08. > :19:08.race is at 12 noon. Try to get along. Hopefully it will be a nice

:19:09. > :19:10.day. Hope so.

:19:11. > :19:14.A special ceremony took place today in Somerset to honour the efforts of

:19:15. > :19:17.some of the forgotten heroes of World War Two. Ten Arctic Star

:19:18. > :19:20.medals were presented to those who helped supply Russia in the Arctic

:19:21. > :19:24.Convoys, which lasted throughout the war. The Government introduced the

:19:25. > :19:28.medals in 2012, more than six decades after the conflict ended.

:19:29. > :19:39.Hamish Marshall was at the ceremony in Yeovilton.

:19:40. > :19:46.It was 8/2 but a vital job. `` a tough but vital. The Arctic convoys

:19:47. > :19:50.delivered aid to the Soviet Union during the Second World War, running

:19:51. > :19:55.the gauntlet of submarine, flight and surface ship attacks. The main

:19:56. > :20:03.thing was the cold. Not only was it absolutely freezing on the deck with

:20:04. > :20:06.the wind, but the thought that if my single engine aircraft, if the

:20:07. > :20:13.engine failed, I would be in the waters of minus 10 Celsius. That is

:20:14. > :20:17.what frightened me most, I think. If the engine stopped and I had to land

:20:18. > :20:26.in the water. This is a long serving member of the helicopter test pilot.

:20:27. > :20:31.John received one of ten Arctic Star medals today. The chance to remember

:20:32. > :20:34.and to share stories. It was necessary because the Russians

:20:35. > :20:43.wanted all the ornaments, aircraft, tanks, lorries, everything that a

:20:44. > :20:47.country needs to keep the services and the army going. Today's fitting,

:20:48. > :20:53.in an area of a museum which commemorates the battle of the

:20:54. > :20:58.Atlantic, was very appropriate. The idea of bringing the Bollinger and

:20:59. > :21:03.having a naval officer give out the medals was a privilege. How nice is

:21:04. > :21:09.to have the recognition question and clamour it is very nice but I would

:21:10. > :21:15.like to know why they have get it for so long! To many, the medals

:21:16. > :21:20.have come too late. Sadly, three of those who should have been here

:21:21. > :21:22.today have died. The incredible veterans of the

:21:33. > :21:35.He was taken home by new owners but they marched him back to the

:21:36. > :21:39.isolation wing of Woodside's high security Ferret fun house because he

:21:40. > :21:43.can't get along with other ferrets. Johnny Rutherford has been to meet

:21:58. > :22:06.albino ferret has a bit of an attitude rotten so he gets called

:22:07. > :22:12.Grant `` Grumpy Gareth. Somebody called him Victor Meldrew the other

:22:13. > :22:16.day but he is happy. He is misunderstood, not grumpy. He is set

:22:17. > :22:22.in his ways. He knows what he likes and likes what he knows, I think.

:22:23. > :22:26.This area is the ferret fun house but unfortunately for Grumpy

:22:27. > :22:31.Gareth, he is not allowed to play with the others because he is not

:22:32. > :22:35.very sociable. Instead, he has his own bachelor pad. You're not really

:22:36. > :22:40.grumpy, are you, Gareth? I think his yellowing meets believe he is. Most

:22:41. > :22:44.people looking for ferrets are looking for a companion for an

:22:45. > :22:50.existing ferret so obviously they are sociable, living in families of

:22:56. > :22:58.He did find a home but the people wanted more of an indoor ferret and

:23:25. > :23:27.Misunderstood, not grumpy. He reminds me of someone, just in.

:23:28. > :23:28.Now, with a look at the weekend weather prospects,

:23:37. > :23:39.More in the way of cloud around this evening and some patchy light rain

:23:45. > :23:47.start of the weekend, dry, bright weather with sunshine,

:23:48. > :23:51.surprisingly. It will be a pleasant day. Feeling quite cool was later

:23:52. > :23:54.winds. A crisp, winter day in four before more in the way of cloud and

:24:03. > :24:05.tomorrow, we are looking at much more in the way of sunshine, with

:24:10. > :24:13.look behind me, the next area of low pressure and weather fronts which

:24:14. > :24:16.will come towards us for Sunday. A brief respite from the stormy

:24:17. > :24:21.weather. For Sunday, wet, windy weather. Look at how to get isobars

:24:22. > :24:25.are. It will be strengthening winds throughout the course of the day but

:24:26. > :24:29.not as much rain as we have seen lately. For this evening, that

:24:30. > :24:32.light, patchy rain will continue to clear through and by the early

:24:33. > :24:37.hours, under the clear skies, editors are likely to fall. In towns

:24:38. > :24:41.and cities, we are looking at around Celsius but it will be cooler in

:24:47. > :24:50.there was a Met Office be aware warning for the risk of some ice on

:24:51. > :24:55.untreated roads and pavements. Take care of your out and about tomorrow.

:24:56. > :24:58.Tomorrow itself, the cloud will thin and break and we will see sunshine

:25:07. > :25:12.In the sunshine, with those later winds, it will be a nice day as long

:25:13. > :25:16.as you're up top fairly warmly. For the alpha silly, after any rain

:25:56. > :26:01.to start the day but generally, we are looking at mostly dry conditions

:26:02. > :26:04.and some occasional moderate visibility but generally quite good.

:26:05. > :26:08.The outlook then, tomorrow is the better day of the weekend. Some

:26:09. > :26:11.crisp sunshine, lighter winds, before more in the way of cloud and

:26:12. > :26:16.rain to come later in the day on Sunday. Rather unsettled conditions

:26:17. > :26:20.for the start of next week also. Not a significant amount of rain but we
