:00:00. > 3:59:59confiscated and destroyed, well, that must be galling. Will Gompertz,

:00:00. > :00:15.Good evening. BBC

:00:16. > :00:18.Good evening. Home owners and businesses around

:00:19. > :00:22.the Channel Islands are counting the cost of very high tides and strong

:00:23. > :00:26.winds over the weekend. We saw flooding, rock falls and road

:00:27. > :00:29.closures around the islands. In Jersey, a policewoman is recovering

:00:30. > :00:32.after being swept away by one wave. We'll see more from Jersey in a

:00:33. > :00:38.moment, but first Mike Wilkins sent this report from Guernsey.

:00:39. > :00:46.APD being rescued from her family's flooded house. Her hero, her dad. ``

:00:47. > :00:53.a baby being rescued. It is only 11 months since the trees were blown

:00:54. > :00:57.down in the snow, so it will be an interesting chat with the insurers.

:00:58. > :01:03.Soon after, the baby's mother was rescued by the fire and rescue

:01:04. > :01:09.service. These shops were not spared, with sandbags about all the

:01:10. > :01:14.shopkeepers could offer as defence. There is very little we could do.

:01:15. > :01:21.These conditions leads to a high tide, and obviously, we can put

:01:22. > :01:27.sandbags out, but there is little we can do to stop the tide rising. But

:01:28. > :01:34.for those wanting to get to the shops and to work, the journey was

:01:35. > :01:38.painfully slow. The traffic behind me is very slow moving, and in some

:01:39. > :01:45.places, it is at gridlock, and it has taken people I was to get to

:01:46. > :01:51.work. For most of the day, one of the main roads on the island was out

:01:52. > :01:53.of action. Seasonal blips these may be, but for businesses and families,

:01:54. > :02:12.they all come at a cost. Oh, my God! Oh, my goodness me. The

:02:13. > :02:19.true effects of nature's force. This is about 500 tonnes of rock

:02:20. > :02:23.falling. The rock fall closed a beach yesterday and is likely to put

:02:24. > :02:28.the area out of bounds for the next few days. We are a little bit

:02:29. > :02:32.suspicious that perhaps other events are unsafe, so until we get an

:02:33. > :02:36.assessment, would close off the beach so that they can come down and

:02:37. > :02:40.inspect, take action and make the whole area safe again. This

:02:41. > :02:48.weekend, storms did not stop the rush over this morning. Rough seas

:02:49. > :02:53.brought traffic to a standstill on the coast. It follows a weekend of

:02:54. > :02:58.disruption. This was Beaumont on Saturday night, where volunteers

:02:59. > :03:02.helped after flooding closed the road. This video is showing a

:03:03. > :03:10.policewoman getting knocked off her feet, and it has had more than

:03:11. > :03:15.125,000 views online. Luckily, she is OK. It was scary. I just thought

:03:16. > :03:19.about protecting my head. As was not until I hit the wall but I knew I

:03:20. > :03:24.was going, so I knew where I was, because I was under water, and I

:03:25. > :03:32.used my feet and my hands against the wall, and the left side of my

:03:33. > :03:38.body. The last few days have seen damage, including a shipping

:03:39. > :03:44.container washed up on the shores. This is such a freak weather. We

:03:45. > :03:49.advise people to keep away from the sea wall when the water is at the

:03:50. > :03:52.top, because waves can sometimes buy up at 35 feet in the air and there

:03:53. > :03:57.is no way we can protect against that. `` fly out. Business owners

:03:58. > :04:03.will now count the cost of the weather. The tides are expected to

:04:04. > :04:08.drop, but stormy conditions are set to continue.

:04:09. > :04:12.New parents in Jersey have been learning basic first aid skills so

:04:13. > :04:15.they know what to do when their baby is choking or bleeding. However

:04:16. > :04:24.it's not a service provided by the health service. They've had to pay

:04:25. > :04:30.for these life`saving skills. Hand and for head. One finger on the

:04:31. > :04:33.chin to get, look down the body Knowing what to do if your baby is

:04:34. > :04:37.unconscious, a heart`stopping moment for any parent. That's why these

:04:38. > :04:41.mums and dads in Jersey have taken it upon themselves to learn first

:04:42. > :04:46.aid, a course they've paid to do themselves. I am expecting my second

:04:47. > :04:53.child in a few weeks and I want to make sure I can do everything I can

:04:54. > :04:57.to save them if need be. It is me having a way that she choked or if

:04:58. > :05:03.anything happens to her and she wasn't breathing I would not have

:05:04. > :05:08.any idea what to do. Your children are the most important thing in your

:05:09. > :05:12.life, once you have had children, and if something happened to them,

:05:13. > :05:15.you would want to be able to help. It's the second time St John

:05:16. > :05:18.Ambulance have carried out this three hour course on a Sunday,

:05:19. > :05:23.teaching vital skills in resuscitation, choking,

:05:24. > :05:26.unconsciousness and bleeding. The most common incidents are things not

:05:27. > :05:29.necessarily that could be prevented because these things happen to

:05:30. > :05:33.everyone but things that people that could help save a life if they got

:05:34. > :05:35.there quicker and earlier and most things with children and infants,

:05:36. > :05:40.it's about getting the treatment quickly and a trip to hospital

:05:41. > :05:44.sometimes can take too long. Not only do these skills help save a

:05:45. > :05:51.life but it also enables parents to know if hospital treatment is

:05:52. > :05:54.needed. It is not in the UK that about 40% of amulets and journeys

:05:55. > :06:01.are not necessary and can be managed at home. `` ambulance. There must be

:06:02. > :06:03.a proportion that could be managed at home, therefore saving a trip to

:06:04. > :06:07.the accident and emergency department. I think some of the

:06:08. > :06:12.cases that we see could be managed at home. First aid is not taught to

:06:13. > :06:14.those expecting through the hospitals antenatal programme,

:06:15. > :06:19.therefore it's up to parents if they want to know what to do in those

:06:20. > :06:24.crucial moments every parent dreads. That's it from me. David Braine has

:06:25. > :06:29.the Channel Islands weather next and the national forecast follows him.

:06:30. > :06:34.Goodnight. Good evening. The low`pressure air, the high tide and

:06:35. > :06:42.the very strong winds this weekend I'll stop it is a little bit quieter

:06:43. > :06:46.later on tonight, but more wind and rain later on in the day tomorrow. A

:06:47. > :06:54.brighter start for sure, that it goes downhill after dark.

:06:55. > :06:59.Isolated showers in the early hours of the morning, and getting quite

:07:00. > :07:03.cold as well, with temperatures down to just four or five degrees. We

:07:04. > :07:08.will expect the showers to come and go through the morning. Generally

:07:09. > :07:13.climbing over towards the end of the day come and the wind will be

:07:14. > :07:20.steadily increasing due out. A top temperature of around eight degrees.

:07:21. > :07:24.It stays very unsettled for the rest of this week. The best it will

:07:25. > :07:29.probably be Wednesday, but certainly on the of rain around on Thursday on

:07:30. > :07:40.the and `` on Thursday, and Wendy. Good evening. As you have just heard

:07:41. > :07:45.on your local forecast there is more wind and rain to come. The story is

:07:46. > :07:48.dominated by two potent areas of low pressure. There are parts of the

:07:49. > :07:53.world that need the rain at the moment, let me take you to

:07:54. > :07:57.California. That has arrived in the form of patchy rain over the past 24

:07:58. > :08:03.hours or so. The reason I take you here is the cloud responsible for

:08:04. > :08:07.it, well that will develop into Saturday's storm system. That same

:08:08. > :08:12.jet stream is picking up this area of cloud at the moment, developing

:08:13. > :08:16.into a deepening area of low pressure in the Atlantic and that

:08:17. > :08:21.will bring wet and windy weather for Wednesday.

:08:22. > :08:30.This rain has been spread in from the west during the day. It will

:08:31. > :08:33.continue as an erratic band of rain and hill snow.

:08:34. > :08:34.In the
