:00:00. > :00:10.Good evening. Guernsey authorities There is also a first look

:00:11. > :00:15.Good evening. Guernsey authorities have been tackling widespread

:00:16. > :00:19.flooding on the island tonight. Around 60 roads were reported as

:00:20. > :00:23.flooded, including here at Route Du Camp Du Roi. Excessive rainfall is

:00:24. > :00:25.also causing problems in parts of Alderney. Meanwhile strong winds

:00:26. > :00:29.have hampered clear`up operations of existing damage across the Channel

:00:30. > :00:32.Islands. Guernsey's environment department admits it's already

:00:33. > :00:38.almost completely spent its budget for maintaining coastal defences.

:00:39. > :00:42.Mike Wilkins reports. A lower tide, but one that's still

:00:43. > :00:45.wreaking havoc. Today this part of Guernsey's east coast was given very

:00:46. > :00:54.little time to recover as the waves smashed in once again.

:00:55. > :01:00.Behind to me the castle breakwater has been damaged. Huge rocks have

:01:01. > :01:04.been dislodged, and it is too early to say what it will cost to repair,

:01:05. > :01:07.but this is crucial to the protection of Saint Peter bought.

:01:08. > :01:11.Across the island teams have been working against the elements to

:01:12. > :01:16.repair the damage. We can't actually do much when the tide is coming

:01:17. > :01:20.over, so we have between tides to do as much as we can. Some places we

:01:21. > :01:23.had to leave because they were too dangerous to get to.

:01:24. > :01:25.As we start just the second month of the year, the environment

:01:26. > :01:34.department's maintenance budget has almost been spent already. The

:01:35. > :01:37.budget for the sea walls and the coastal defences will be gone

:01:38. > :01:40.without question, but that is not the end of the world.

:01:41. > :01:43.Repairing all this will cost a lot of money, and the environment

:01:44. > :01:46.department is going to have to find more and re`prioritise its plans to

:01:47. > :01:52.ensure the island remains protected from future storms.

:01:53. > :01:56.As the unlikely begins to happen at Castle Cornet, some reassuring news

:01:57. > :02:03.for insurance customers. Some companies say the storm damage won't

:02:04. > :02:09.have a huge effect on premiums. The number of claims we have had

:02:10. > :02:12.notified is far more biased to Guernsey than jersey, and

:02:13. > :02:18.specifically localised to a certain area. I don't see that storm and the

:02:19. > :02:20.floods that have occurred over the last few days will have a huge

:02:21. > :02:24.effect on premiums, no. For people that have been affected

:02:25. > :02:25.by storm damage, the advice is to speak to your insurance company as

:02:26. > :02:32.soon as possible. Well, with more weather warnings on

:02:33. > :02:35.the way, our reporter Edward Sault has been to Jersey's Transport and

:02:36. > :02:45.Technical Services depot to speak to minister Kevin Lewis.

:02:46. > :02:48.You join me at a wet and blustery transport and technical services

:02:49. > :02:54.depot in Jersey. This is where all the road sweepers for the island are

:02:55. > :02:59.kept. If you come with me, you can see for yourself. Here are two that

:03:00. > :03:03.have been heavily involved in the clean`up this week, and they are

:03:04. > :03:09.undergoing a clean`up themselves, ready for more bad weather. Kevin

:03:10. > :03:19.Lewis, how bad has the weather been in your experience? I have never

:03:20. > :03:24.known it this bad. So storm of the century as far as I'm concerned

:03:25. > :03:28.We're looking at upwards of ?20 ,000 a total cost of the clean`up will

:03:29. > :03:33.stop but there is more to come. We have a red warning tonight, we are

:03:34. > :03:37.anticipating trees to come down roof tiles to come off. We advise

:03:38. > :03:41.anyone if they have something in their garden that can blow around,

:03:42. > :03:47.please secure it and batten down the hatches. What are other problems

:03:48. > :03:50.that you're envisaging? We have several teams on stand`by, the

:03:51. > :03:56.forestry team on stand`by on the sweepers you have mentioned. They

:03:57. > :04:00.can clear seaweed and debris prior to the roads being opened. A lot of

:04:01. > :04:06.it has to be done by hand because seaweed is too heavy. We are

:04:07. > :04:09.prepared. Debbie G, thank you. The team here are prepared for more

:04:10. > :04:20.bad weather over the course of the next few days. This afternoon,

:04:21. > :04:23.Jersey Met did issue another weather warning. The clean`up will continue.

:04:24. > :04:28.The head of Jersey's Fishermen's Association says this winter's been

:04:29. > :04:31.one of the worst for local fishermen in 35 years. And it's starting to

:04:32. > :04:35.have an affect on local fish supplies, as Jen Smith found out.

:04:36. > :04:41.Get them while you can. Vicky Border's been selling fish in Jersey

:04:42. > :04:47.at this family business for more than 15 years. She says she still

:04:48. > :04:54.has plenty to fill the shelves now, but by the weekend shellfish will be

:04:55. > :04:59.gone. Crab and lobster will be the main problem, and when that has run

:05:00. > :05:03.out, it has run out. We will just have to hope that there is light at

:05:04. > :05:06.the end of the tunnel, and the fishermen can get back out, because

:05:07. > :05:09.they are the guys I feel sorry for. Vicky's shop relies on the catch

:05:10. > :05:13.local fishermen bring in. But the boats have been stuck in the harbour

:05:14. > :05:18.since December, so there's little to go around. We are running into the

:05:19. > :05:25.sixth week since fishermen have really had any income at all. We can

:05:26. > :05:28.suffer a couple of weeks, but this is creating real difficulty,

:05:29. > :05:32.particularly for young fishermen, to have no income at all.

:05:33. > :05:37.The slump in local fish is having a knock`on affect from fishermen's

:05:38. > :05:43.pockets to restaurant plates. Lobster, crab, it is all imported at

:05:44. > :05:49.the moment. Scallops, and a lot of the fish as well, the wet fish. A

:05:50. > :05:55.bit comes from the mainland anyway, so we are managing in that respect,

:05:56. > :05:57.but local has been pretty bad for local fish. Vicky's optimistic

:05:58. > :06:00.there'll be a break in the weather soon, so Jersey's fishermen can get

:06:01. > :06:04.back to sea. But with more bad weather on the way

:06:05. > :06:09.for the weekend, these nets may be ashore for a while to come.

:06:10. > :06:14.There are weather warnings still in place for flooding in some low`lying

:06:15. > :06:18.areas across the Channel Islands early tomorrow morning. BBC Radio

:06:19. > :06:23.Guernsey and BBC Radio Jersey are on air from 6am with all the details.

:06:24. > :06:29.David is here next with our latest forecast. But from me, good night.

:06:30. > :06:36.Good evening. Good news and bad news. The good news is that we

:06:37. > :06:40.should have a reasonable day tomorrow, even with some morning

:06:41. > :06:44.sunshine. The bad news is the wind will pick up later in the day, and

:06:45. > :06:48.overnight we will have more wind and rain turning up, and also strong

:06:49. > :06:58.winds overnight tonight. They'd could be damaging winds. Gusts of up

:06:59. > :07:06.to 70 mph, so really strong. They use through the day, but for a short

:07:07. > :07:14.while, pretty lively. They are picking up quite swiftly,

:07:15. > :07:20.temperatures, 607 Celsius. A few passing showers, thick cloud

:07:21. > :07:22.approaching from the West, eight or nine Celsius the top temperature,

:07:23. > :07:27.and generally lighter winds than we have been used to. Saturday and

:07:28. > :07:31.Sunday, the wind and the rain just keeps on coming.

:07:32. > :07:37.settled into Sunday. From us, good night. Here is

:07:38. > :07:44.Hello. I think the impact of this wet weather could be felt more

:07:45. > :07:50.widely as time goes on, even in areas which have been unscathed up

:07:51. > :07:52.until now. For now, the focus is on southern England. We have amber

:07:53. > :07:55.weather warnings right through until Saturday. We have another storm

:07:56. > :07:56.heading
