:00:00. > 3:59:59reputation enhanced. That's it. Starting on BBC Two now,

:00:00. > :00:10.Good evening. Condor's French Jeremy Paxman

:00:11. > :00:14.Good evening. Condor's French workers have now been on strike for

:00:15. > :00:17.five days, meaning no sailings to France from the Channel Islands The

:00:18. > :00:21.workers want their contracts changed from Guernsey terms to French ones

:00:22. > :00:24.so they get better pay and social security benefits. Last Thursday,

:00:25. > :00:31.the unexpected strike began, which left around 250 passengers bound for

:00:32. > :00:34.the Channel Islands stuck in France. Sailings on Friday and over the

:00:35. > :00:37.weekend were cancelled because of the strike and bad weather. And

:00:38. > :00:40.today, negotiations continue on board the Condor ferry in St Malo

:00:41. > :00:44.between the unions and Condor management with no end in sight to

:00:45. > :00:54.the dispute. The disruption is now causing problems for Jersey

:00:55. > :00:58.businesses too as Jen Smith reports. Destined for the Continent. If they

:00:59. > :01:01.could get there. These crab and lobster would be sold for thousands

:01:02. > :01:05.in Spain, Italy and Portugal, but they have to get through France

:01:06. > :01:14.first. And with no ferry sailing to St Malo, it's put Tony Porritt out

:01:15. > :01:21.of pocket. Rego do local so it is 90% plus export. We have to get into

:01:22. > :01:27.France to distribute on to Italy and Spain from there. That's where we go

:01:28. > :01:31.every week of the year, normally. If it carries on for any length of

:01:32. > :01:34.time, we've had it. Tony estimates he's lost around

:01:35. > :01:38.?20,000 every time a sailing has been cancelled. But it's not just

:01:39. > :01:44.about money. This French shop has been left bare after an assistant

:01:45. > :01:52.got stuck in France. She was sailing last Saturday to

:01:53. > :02:03.pick up our next exhibition to display in our shop window here

:02:04. > :02:09.Since then, she could not get back. There is a lot of adjustment. But

:02:10. > :02:13.there's not much we can do, really. Condor boss James Fulford has spent

:02:14. > :02:15.today on the Condor Rapide in St Malo negotiating with workers.

:02:16. > :02:19.They're now demanding the boat is re`registered in France instead of

:02:20. > :02:22.Guernsey. We need to persuade them that these

:02:23. > :02:27.are massive changes they are demanding. Some of them may have

:02:28. > :02:44.merit, but they cannot be done in the short term. They need to go back

:02:45. > :02:45.to work while we negotiate. They are jeopardising the businesses of a lot

:02:46. > :02:52.of people. And that includes Tony, who says if

:02:53. > :02:55.the walk`out lasts much longer, his customers will follow suit.

:02:56. > :03:04.Well, our reporter Simon Coss has been following the talks in St Malo

:03:05. > :03:08.and sent this report earlier. The strike has been going on for

:03:09. > :03:18.five days and there is no end in sight. The unions want registered

:03:19. > :03:22.under French labour law. They say the contracts they currently have a

:03:23. > :03:31.well below international standards. The two sides are talking, but there

:03:32. > :03:35.is no sign of any deal yet. In other news, couples who've booked

:03:36. > :03:38.their wedding in Jersey this year could lose their chosen date after a

:03:39. > :03:41.computer error at the Register Office. Islanders who've booked a

:03:42. > :03:44.registrar for a wedding or civil partnership are being asked to

:03:45. > :03:47.reconfirm their booking. A Guernsey pedestrian safety group

:03:48. > :03:51.has put up a banner outside the Vale Schools warning parents not to park

:03:52. > :03:54.there. Living Streets campaigners say their sign, which reads "no

:03:55. > :03:57.parking, no waiting, no excuses , is about making the area safer. It

:03:58. > :04:07.could see parents facing on`the`spot fines for parking on yellow lines in

:04:08. > :04:12.the area. 50 yards down the road, there is

:04:13. > :04:18.plenty of parking space. It is only one or two Mac minutes to walk up to

:04:19. > :04:21.the crossing. There are no excuses. All Jersey shops could be open on

:04:22. > :04:26.Sundays this summer if the States agrees. A proposal is being made to

:04:27. > :04:29.relax the law for an 18 month trial aimed at getting islanders spending

:04:30. > :04:32.more in their local shops than online, as Emma Chambers reports.

:04:33. > :04:36.First impressions may suggest it's spend spend, spend in St Helier but

:04:37. > :04:41.latest figures show that may not be the case. Over 20 shops closed last

:04:42. > :04:48.year and the amount of parcels arriving into the island from online

:04:49. > :04:52.shopping has increased by 28%. But could Sunday trading be the answer

:04:53. > :04:56.to boosting our economy? Currently, shops under 700 square metres can

:04:57. > :05:05.trade. Now a proposal is being made to allow bigger stores to open. We

:05:06. > :05:10.are seeking to get more people and more business going to look. Is

:05:11. > :05:27.rather than off Ireland through the Internet. `` going to local stores.

:05:28. > :05:31.The proposal is for an 18 month trial starting in June. So what do

:05:32. > :05:35.shoppers think? Good idea, just like the rest of the world. My only

:05:36. > :05:40.concern would be for the staff who have to work. Stay as it is.

:05:41. > :05:43.This former Constable of St Helier says he's already tried opening

:05:44. > :05:48.large supermarkets on a Sunday and it didn't work.

:05:49. > :05:55.We had to stop it in the end, we had so many complaints. People were

:05:56. > :06:01.saying to me, we have to put up with lorries delivering six days a week

:06:02. > :06:08.because the supermarket, though it might be closed, they can't stop it.

:06:09. > :06:11.Life is hell six days a week, don't make it seven.

:06:12. > :06:14.In the end, it will be the States which decides if seven day shopping

:06:15. > :06:20.is the direction the island will follow.

:06:21. > :06:23.That is the late news from BBC Channel Islands. David Braine is

:06:24. > :06:30.here next with our local forecast and the national weather follows

:06:31. > :06:34.him. Goodnight. Hello, good evening. After some

:06:35. > :06:39.brief brightness and sunshine today, it is all change again for tonight

:06:40. > :06:47.and tomorrow. It could be quite a wet start, but the rain is moving

:06:48. > :06:52.quite fast and then we shall see showers. A quiet start tonight.

:06:53. > :06:59.Later, the cloud will increase and the wind will become strong to deal

:07:00. > :07:05.forceful the rain will move through by lunchtime. By the afternoon, we

:07:06. > :07:10.should see some sunshine, just a few showers borrowing the rest of the

:07:11. > :07:15.day. Quite a cold wind. More wet weather possible on Wednesday,

:07:16. > :07:19.another very windy day as well, severe gale`force wind is possible

:07:20. > :07:26.on Wednesday. On Thursday, yet another area of low pressure coming

:07:27. > :07:37.on Friday. The National forecast follows. Good night.

:07:38. > :07:45.Good evening. You have my permission to complain about too many repeats

:07:46. > :07:49.with the British weather at the moment because yet again it looks as

:07:50. > :07:54.though our winter weather is set to continue with a repeat of last week.

:07:55. > :07:58.Sunny spells and scattered showers today and this is the next area of

:07:59. > :08:06.low pressure pushing in from the west. It influences our weather for

:08:07. > :08:14.the rest of the week. More rain to come and gales and severe gales to

:08:15. > :08:22.come. Ice is a possible risk. That means a cumulative total perhaps or

:08:23. > :08:26.40-70 millimetres and that is an extra two to three inches. It will

:08:27. > :08:31.exacerbate the flooding we have already got across England at the

:08:32. > :08:37.moment. The cloud, wind and rain is already pushing in from the west.

:08:38. > :08:42.There will be a widespread frost. Ice could be a problem first thing

:08:43. > :08:47.in Northern Ireland. Snow in the hills and maybe in the North East of

:08:48. > :08:53.Scotland we could see snow at lower levels. Rain through northern

:08:54. > :08:59.England and Wales and Somerset. Some of that rain could be quite intense

:09:00. > :09:03.coupled with squally, gusty winds on exposed coasts. In the east it

:09:04. > :09:10.starts off relatively dry, but it will not be long before the wind and

:09:11. > :09:15.the rain spreads further east. Up into the North the snow showers

:09:16. > :09:19.continue on the hills, but by the end of the afternoon we could see

:09:20. > :09:26.wet snow even at lower levels. A cold day. There is a potential for

:09:27. > :09:30.some snow showers at lower levels across England and Wales on Tuesday

:09:31. > :09:35.night and into Wednesday. On Wednesday it is this area of low

:09:36. > :09:41.pressure which is the main factor in Wednesday's weather. More wet and

:09:42. > :09:46.windy weather. An early amber warning has already been issued from

:09:47. > :09:51.the South West. Severe gales are likely as we continue to see some

:09:52. > :09:56.very wet weather coming into central and southern areas. The strongest

:09:57. > :10:00.winds follow in behind those showers. In Scotland you are

:10:01. > :10:01.probably wondering what the
