:00:00. > :00:07.to British coastlines, with winds of up to 80 mph. That's all from

:00:08. > :00:15.I welcome do Friday's BBC Channel Islands news. The top stories:

:00:16. > :00:20.Forecasters issue a severe weather warning as islanders are told to

:00:21. > :00:23.prepare for more storm damage. Southerly winds are bashing the

:00:24. > :00:28.islands. Over the next two tow three hours the gusts of winds could be

:00:29. > :00:34.around 60 or 70 miles per hour. I'll have all the details, later in the

:00:35. > :00:37.programme. Calls for a screening programme ` as Guernsey's medical

:00:38. > :00:40.experts admit up to 90% of chlamydia cases are going undetected. From

:00:41. > :00:44.this, to this. The radical plans for a hotel destroyed by fire 10 years

:00:45. > :00:47.ago. And the extraordinary efforts sailors on this warship ` affiliated

:00:48. > :00:49.to Guernsey ` went to, to say three magic words. But are we Channel

:00:50. > :01:01.Islanders really a romantic bunch? I'm not really what you call a

:01:02. > :01:12.romantic person. But this is it once a year. I'll take her out

:01:13. > :01:15.tonight and we'll enjoy ourselves. People across the island should

:01:16. > :01:18.prepare themselves for more galeforce winds this evening as

:01:19. > :01:21.Jersey Met issues yet another severe weather warning. In Jersey, there

:01:22. > :01:24.could be more flooding and storm damage as strong winds and heavy

:01:25. > :01:30.rain combine with high tide, which is just about now. In the past few

:01:31. > :01:33.moments, Jersey Police closed Victoria Avenue and Havre des Pas

:01:34. > :01:40.and inter`island flights were cancelled. Guernsey's coast roads do

:01:41. > :01:43.remain open. Jersey's Transport and Technical Service Department are

:01:44. > :01:47.asking people to secure items like scaffolding, and warning that boat

:01:48. > :01:50.owners need to take action. Christina Ghidoni has been to

:01:51. > :01:56.Jersey's harbour for us this evening. Zblts already incredibly

:01:57. > :02:00.windy down here at the harbour. Sailings to the UK have been

:02:01. > :02:04.disrupted today and tomorrow. And with winds of up to 70 miles per

:02:05. > :02:09.hour expected this evening, boat owners are being asked to make sure

:02:10. > :02:13.their boats are secure. Down here at the harbour with me is the Transport

:02:14. > :02:17.Technical Services Minister, Deputy Kevin Lewis. What are the main

:02:18. > :02:22.concerns? . Well, as we speak we have boat owners down here making

:02:23. > :02:27.sure everything is stowed away and they are batoning down the hatches,

:02:28. > :02:32.literally. We are going to be quite blowy tonight, force 9, possibly

:02:33. > :02:37.force 10 gale. There will be over`topping on the sea rolls around

:02:38. > :02:44.6. 30 P there will be a few spots where the tide will come over. TTF

:02:45. > :02:50.are on standbi. We have our coastal and forestry team on standby, we

:02:51. > :02:54.think we'll lose a few trees. If somebody sees a fallen tree or scoff

:02:55. > :03:00.following what should they do? Contact the police, who will notify

:03:01. > :03:05.TTS or the land over. In terms of the cost, ?#2b 00,000 has already

:03:06. > :03:10.been spent on clean`up S there more money in the pot if there's damage

:03:11. > :03:14.tonight? We have a contingency fund. We are just over ?200,000 at the

:03:15. > :03:22.moment. We are not out of the woods yet. There are more storms coming

:03:23. > :03:28.this week. With the strong winds expected tonight. The advice is only

:03:29. > :03:32.go out if you have to. And you can keep up`to`date on the latest storm

:03:33. > :03:35.and any damage it causes by listening to BBC Radio Jersey or BBC

:03:36. > :03:37.Radio Guernsey. And in Jersey the police have set up dedicated numbers

:03:38. > :03:42.for weather`releated emergencies. Radio Guernsey. And in Jersey the

:03:43. > :03:53.police have set up dedicated They are 612015 and 612045. New figures

:03:54. > :03:55.have revealed that 90% of cases of the sexually transmitted infection,

:03:56. > :04:00.Chlamydia, go undetected in Guernsey. The news has now prompted

:04:01. > :04:04.calls for a dedicated screening programme in the island for the STI

:04:05. > :04:12.that can cause infertility and miscarriages. Mike Wilkins reports.

:04:13. > :04:18.They're the health conditions which few talk openly about, sexually

:04:19. > :04:23.transmitted infections. The number of cases of chlamydia diagnosed here

:04:24. > :04:28.is at its highest for more than a decade. Guernsey's annual health

:04:29. > :04:32.report says it is highly likely 10% of people sexually active between

:04:33. > :04:36.the age of 16 to 25 are infected with chlamydia. It could be the tip

:04:37. > :04:41.of the iceberg as many more go undetected. For us, looking at our

:04:42. > :04:44.local data, we know we're underestimating the number of cases

:04:45. > :04:48.in Guernsey. If we look at the numbers we diagnose and estimates

:04:49. > :04:54.our rates of infection, we think we are missing about 75 to 09% of cases

:04:55. > :04:59.in the 16`25`year`old age group And this is one of the reasons why we do

:05:00. > :05:02.need a chlamydia screening programme. A sexual health strategy

:05:03. > :05:05.is currently being drafted. It's hoping to encourage more people to

:05:06. > :05:09.get themselves checked and it may soon be possible to do a will the

:05:10. > :05:13.more of it from home. Well I'm in one of the clinic rooms

:05:14. > :05:17.which for many people is quite an intimidating place. However, as it

:05:18. > :05:21.currently stands, you can actually take the swab yourself in a toilet

:05:22. > :05:24.down the corridor and hand it in at the desk. There are plans to roll

:05:25. > :05:28.this out if the sexual health strategy is approved, so people will

:05:29. > :05:33.be able to do this at home and then pop it in the post. Poor sexual

:05:34. > :05:39.health is costly. Treating chlamydia and its knock`on effects costs the

:05:40. > :05:41.island around ?100,000 a year. The health and social services

:05:42. > :05:44.department says it will consider funding a screening programme, but

:05:45. > :05:49.only once the sexual health strategy has been finalised. So, for now

:05:50. > :05:56.sexually tramsmitted infections remain a significant issue for

:05:57. > :06:00.Guernsey. Investigations into safeguardk in Jersey's Anglican

:06:01. > :06:03.Church have cost nearly ?200,00 . The figure was revealed at the

:06:04. > :06:07.General Synod this he can would ed the Church of England and the

:06:08. > :06:13.Diocese of Win chest will split the cost. It's been more than ten years

:06:14. > :06:18.since fire destroyed the Idlerocks Hotel on Gurney's south coast. Today

:06:19. > :06:23.plans were revealed to transform the site into a five`star hotel.

:06:24. > :06:29.Designed to be eco`friend li, it's architects behind the scheme claim

:06:30. > :06:37.it could be the competition to claim the accolade of the channel island's

:06:38. > :06:41.Best hoe. He September 2003, the hotel was destroyed by a fire.

:06:42. > :06:46.Two`thirds of the roof collapsed. The bad luck didn't end there,

:06:47. > :06:51.though. In 2012, another major fire broke out, causing the building to

:06:52. > :06:56.be deemed unsafe and it was cordoned off to the public.

:06:57. > :07:01.Burnt, neglected and crumbling, the Idlerocks Hotel has become an

:07:02. > :07:06.eyesore but if this man is agreed t could be transformed. Permission was

:07:07. > :07:10.granted back in 2012, for the ownsers to demolish the remains of

:07:11. > :07:14.the burntout building and an architectural firm has now submitted

:07:15. > :07:18.plans to transform the site into a five`star hotel.

:07:19. > :07:23.This is a fantastic opportunity I think for Guernsey, in building a

:07:24. > :07:28.tourism destination, and hotel. Of really high quality.

:07:29. > :07:32.The open`planning meeting, we will also do a presentation, and it will

:07:33. > :07:36.be at that point that the planning board will make the decision. The

:07:37. > :07:40.new hotel is designed to blend into the natural environ mentd and where

:07:41. > :07:44.possible, be eco`friendly. Introducing the green rooms and

:07:45. > :07:48.walls, improves the bio`diverse yited of our site which offsets the

:07:49. > :07:53.build and hotel itself. The decision is now in the hands of the environ

:07:54. > :07:56.Environment Department and if the design is approved, work will take

:07:57. > :08:13.two years and the project in total will cost in the region of ?20

:08:14. > :08:16.million. A Jersey`based physiotherapist heads to Sochi today

:08:17. > :08:20.to work with the USA Men's Alpine Ski Team. Paul Frankham has spent

:08:21. > :08:24.several years working with the team and he will decide who's fit enough

:08:25. > :08:27.to race and who'll have to stay off the slopes during the Winter

:08:28. > :08:30.Olympics. The team have remained in Europe for training until today

:08:31. > :08:33.Excited just to go to Russia, you know. It is a new place for me. I

:08:34. > :08:35.haven't been there. It is an interesting location down on the

:08:36. > :08:38.coast of the Black Sea down there in the South. It is the Olympic Games.

:08:39. > :08:41.The Olympic Games is the biggest and the best in sport. It's about as

:08:42. > :08:47.good as it gets. I have grown up being so interested in sport, and to

:08:48. > :08:52.be there in that intense environment is fantastic. I can't wait.

:08:53. > :09:00.Good luck to Paul. David is with us. Evening. Here we go again, it seems.

:09:01. > :09:10.Yes, but hopefully this will be quite the last one for a while, not

:09:11. > :09:13.to say we won't see areas of deep pressure. At the moment, it is a

:09:14. > :09:18.southerly galeforce wind. It'll veer round to become more south westerly.

:09:19. > :09:21.Into the weekend, it is much brighter. The winds will drop, it

:09:22. > :09:25.will be drier and yes, we will see sunshine. For the moment, we have

:09:26. > :09:29.the threat of the gusts of winds up to around 60 to 70 miles per hour.

:09:30. > :09:36.That will last until midnight. Gradually, ever so slowly, the gales

:09:37. > :09:40.will drop. This is the culprit, this area of low pressure. It is slowly

:09:41. > :09:43.moving away from us. Eventually it'll begin to ease the winds. The

:09:44. > :09:47.winds will become more westerly through the day tomorrow. Then the

:09:48. > :09:52.North westerly as we move into the evening. Sunday, we are diveen areas

:09:53. > :09:56.of low pressure. With any luck, it is a chance it clear up some

:09:57. > :10:00.sunshine, a chance of a few showersth dotted around. The shower

:10:01. > :10:04.activity we have overnight will drop hefty bursts of rain every now and

:10:05. > :10:08.then. The showers more isolated towards down to. Which gives us a

:10:09. > :10:11.start it the day at least with some sunny spells. There may well be a

:10:12. > :10:14.few showers around. They'll continue into the afternoon but all day,

:10:15. > :10:19.through the day tomorrow, those winds will continue to drop, with a

:10:20. > :10:21.top temperature of around nine or ten.

:10:22. > :10:31.On it the forecast for the coastal waters. Lively overnight:

:10:32. > :10:40.Then the times of high water, the important ones:

:10:41. > :10:47.The winds are from a different direction tomorrow. For surfers

:10:48. > :10:50.pretty big waves. Three to five feet and messy for most coastal

:10:51. > :10:55.locations. The forecast, as we head into next week, is still quite

:10:56. > :10:58.unsettled but you will note that the winds aren't anywhere as strong

:10:59. > :11:03.Some sunny spells possible on Sunday and a small chance of a few showers

:11:04. > :11:07.dotted around. There is some rain in the forecast as we move into Monday.

:11:08. > :11:11.But it is light and patchy and swhid nt see too much. On Tuesday, apart

:11:12. > :11:15.from a few showers, a mainly fine day with sunny spells. Actually it

:11:16. > :11:18.improves next week. We just have to get through this really windy spell

:11:19. > :11:32.of weather overnight and into tomorrow. Last night I promised you

:11:33. > :11:40.the word for windy in Thai: HE SAYS THE WORD

:11:41. > :11:44.You can't fail to have noticed that it's Valentine's Day, so what do you

:11:45. > :11:48.do if you're far from your loved one? Well, the crew aboard

:11:49. > :11:51.Guernsey's affiliated Royal Navy ship, HMS Daring, found a way to

:11:52. > :11:55.send that special message. They ve been deployed for the last nine

:11:56. > :11:58.months, so arranged themselves on the flight deck spelling out the

:11:59. > :12:00.words, "I love you" for an aerial photograph. Guernseyman,

:12:01. > :12:03.Sub`Lieutenant Max Barber, was part of it. He spoke to BBC Radio

:12:04. > :12:06.Guernsey earlier IT WAS QUITE DIFFICULT. WE HAD THE HELICOPTER UP

:12:07. > :12:08.FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES TRYING IT TAKE THE PHOTOGRAPH. BUT THE SHIP'S

:12:09. > :12:11.COMPANY IS VERY EASY TO ORGANISE. WE drew it out on paper.

:12:12. > :12:16.I was been in the Navy for two`and`a`half years. I managed to

:12:17. > :12:20.spend three Valentine's day away. I have been dodging it a while. You

:12:21. > :12:24.get used to it but miss your loveds ones more on days like this. Are we

:12:25. > :12:30.a romantic bunch? We'll leave you now with some warm`hearted thoughts

:12:31. > :12:38.from St Helier for thiscold winter's night. For now, goodbye. See you

:12:39. > :12:42.soon. I'm not what you called a romantic person. This is it, once a

:12:43. > :12:48.year, I do this, I take her out tonight and we'll enjoy so you

:12:49. > :12:53.areselves. `` ourselves. It's nice, my husband bought me a

:12:54. > :12:58.necklace. I don't enjoy it. But it is a an excuse to have a night in

:12:59. > :13:05.and a Chinese. I is love Valentine's day. It is a shame the men aren t

:13:06. > :13:11.organised. St Valentine's day is the peak of romanticism for me. Rowses.

:13:12. > :13:15.It is a cliche. I'm single on Valentine's day. Not that I care. I

:13:16. > :13:19.feel like it is Valentine's day every day to be honest with my

:13:20. > :13:20.boyfriend. I don't think you should wait.

:13:21. > :17:58.at College Road primary School, the Plymouth Raiders are spreading the

:17:59. > :18:06.word that basketball is the sport to take up, but how difficult will that

:18:07. > :18:09.be now? It does not queue in terms of what we are trying to build. We

:18:10. > :18:27.have the Academy and University. There are lots dash`macro of

:18:28. > :18:37.positives. Did you get lots of tips? I did. What makes it special

:18:38. > :18:44.for you? You get to be with your friends and you get to be healthy

:18:45. > :18:49.for life. Is it is a good sport? Yes!

:18:50. > :18:52.The next generation of Raiders fans ending that report by Dave Gibbins.

:18:53. > :18:56.And the big advantage for basketball in this weather is that's not

:18:57. > :19:07.affected by it, so their match against Glasgow Rocks will go ahead

:19:08. > :19:11.tomorrow night at the Pavilions. Now the weather may not be a

:19:12. > :19:14.gardener's delight at the moment, but you may be surprised to hear

:19:15. > :19:17.that hundreds of flowers are already in bloom. Every year gardeners at

:19:18. > :19:20.National Trust properties count up the number of blooms and compare

:19:21. > :19:23.them to the previous year. Both Saltram ,near Plymouth and

:19:24. > :19:26.Trelissick near Truro have seen increases in the number in flower

:19:27. > :19:29.this February, but there's been a decline at Cothele in Cornwall.

:19:30. > :19:31.Although as Spotlight's Janine Jansen has been finding out, it's

:19:32. > :19:35.still a beautiful early spring garden. It is a romantic time of

:19:36. > :19:37.year and a time to think of flowers. Every year The National Trust sends

:19:38. > :19:40.out its gardeners to record how many event types of flowers are blooming.

:19:41. > :19:42.Here at Cothele, many are blooming, but the numbers are down. We have

:19:43. > :19:46.noticed in the last few days, certainly since Monday, the crocuses

:19:47. > :19:51.were coming through, showing a little bit of colour. When the sun

:19:52. > :19:55.does come out, it is actually really warm. Talking to some of the other

:19:56. > :20:00.head gardeners, they are saying the same thing. The flower count is down

:20:01. > :20:07.on last year, but there is a lot on this showing around the gardens.

:20:08. > :20:10.They have been just three frosts, but sunlight levels have been low

:20:11. > :20:16.and the ground is saturated and certainly Cothele has not escaped

:20:17. > :20:30.the storms. We have lost three or four relatively large trees that

:20:31. > :20:35.have been fairly significant. This has been flowering well for several

:20:36. > :20:40.weeks. The worry is that if we have the frost, they will be damaged.

:20:41. > :20:51.That's why we are watching the oncoming weather, but there are

:20:52. > :20:58.flowers to calm dash`macro to come. There is a survey being carried out

:20:59. > :21:09.on social media to find out the most popular flower. First is the dream

:21:10. > :21:12.rose, secondly the daffodil and is the snowdrop is third. The National

:21:13. > :21:20.Trust opens its gardens to the public tomorrow.

:21:21. > :21:23.Well it's Valentine's Day today and Janine mentioned flowers, romance

:21:24. > :21:27.and the weather in her report there. So put it all together and you get

:21:28. > :21:31.our next story. Yes, as the wind picked up and the rain came down on

:21:32. > :21:49.this day dedicated to love, a bride braved the great outdoors and took

:21:50. > :21:58.off for her wedding. Call sounds, no stranger to storms. Dash`macro Orson

:21:59. > :22:02.'s. The storms make it a little bit more romantic. We are happy and we

:22:03. > :22:07.want to get married. The weather just adds a bit of adventure to the

:22:08. > :22:11.day. The weather did not stop the bride`to`be waking the short walk to

:22:12. > :22:17.the church. Whilst the couple tied the knot, the wind and waves were

:22:18. > :22:24.loud enough to drown out any wedding bells. The bride and groom emerged

:22:25. > :22:30.happily married. Memorable, adventurous. It was brilliant. It is

:22:31. > :22:34.a day everyone will remember. A really good day. There will be no

:22:35. > :22:42.wedding photographs on the beach today. As for the honeymoon, they

:22:43. > :22:46.are going to wait until the summer. Our top story tonight is of course

:22:47. > :22:53.the weather and an amber alert for wind is in place as well as severe

:22:54. > :22:57.flood warnings. There are no trains in or out of Cornwall to night. That

:22:58. > :23:04.is because of flood damage. And these pictures of Polish workers

:23:05. > :23:19.sent by our cameraman. The seas are very, very high. Conditions are very

:23:20. > :23:25.rough tonight. Let's get the forecast. Those pictures speak

:23:26. > :23:34.volumes about how strong the winds are and how well this season. I have

:23:35. > :23:39.been monitoring the boys that are out of seeing. The one off Brittany

:23:40. > :23:47.had waves at nine o'clock this morning of around 20 feet. At the

:23:48. > :23:50.moment they are above 45 feet. Perhaps not as large as that through

:23:51. > :24:00.the English Channel, but with a southerly winds coming through, it

:24:01. > :24:07.is possible. The highest gusts of wind we have seen so far as being

:24:08. > :24:14.just under 80 mph. There will be further showers tonight. The wind

:24:15. > :24:19.and shall activity will ease down. Let us go to the Isles of Scilly and

:24:20. > :24:29.here in the old town beach, these ways that have been coming on shore

:24:30. > :24:33.have been crashing over the houses. Expect more of the same. We still

:24:34. > :24:41.have an ample warning, as we have just said, about the wind. Slowly

:24:42. > :24:47.though, they will is later tonight. The culprit is an area of low

:24:48. > :24:52.pressure that has been whipping up the wind. The arrows will change

:24:53. > :25:02.direction during the night and will become a bit more westerly. There

:25:03. > :25:06.are several severe flood warnings as well as multiple flood warnings

:25:07. > :25:18.along the coastline and inland. There is the number you need to

:25:19. > :25:20.call. That us look at the detail in the broader perspective because with

:25:21. > :25:25.the area of low pressure across southern island, it will move

:25:26. > :25:30.steadily during the night. It will move up towards the Northey and the

:25:31. > :25:36.winds will drop. As we move through tomorrow night and into Sunday, we

:25:37. > :25:40.have a ridge of high pressure coming other way. If anything, a quiet

:25:41. > :25:49.night on Saturday and the winds could be light enough for a touch of

:25:50. > :25:58.frost. This area of the low pressure is not the same animal. The winds

:25:59. > :26:03.will not be as heavy and next week the low pressure will not be as

:26:04. > :26:07.vicious. The showers to night are lively and the winds are gusty.

:26:08. > :26:12.Bearing more westerly as the night progresses. Overnight temperatures
