:00:00. > :00:13.And that is all from us for this evening. Now on BBC One,
:00:14. > :00:20.Good evening. This battle is not over ` that's the
:00:21. > :00:23.message from unions tonight about the dispute with Condor Ferries over
:00:24. > :00:26.workers rights. A two week strike which halted services between the
:00:27. > :00:29.Channel Islands and St Malo was called off yesterday, after Condor
:00:30. > :00:31.said it had agreed to offer the French sailors a better insurance
:00:32. > :00:34.package. But the International Transport Workers federation ` who
:00:35. > :00:37.organised the industrial action ` said today that they were taking
:00:38. > :00:42.legal action as Condor was 'impossible to negotiate with'.
:00:43. > :00:46.Well, as the war of words intensifies, passengers have finally
:00:47. > :00:53.been arriving back in the islands. Penny Elderfield reports. A short
:00:54. > :00:56.wait at St Malo harbour this morning is nothing for these passengers `
:00:57. > :01:03.who've been waiting for two weeks to get to Jersey: I have not been able
:01:04. > :01:07.to get to Jersey for the past two and a half weeks. First of all was
:01:08. > :01:15.the weather and then it has been the strike. TRANSLATION: We had a trip
:01:16. > :01:21.planned for Valentine's Day and we had to reschedule. We are bit and
:01:22. > :01:24.happy and a bit and pleased. `` unhappy. And finally, at around 10am
:01:25. > :01:29.french time, the Condor Rapide bid au revoir to France... ...And
:01:30. > :01:34.bonjour to St Helier. Meaning the ferry link to France is back in time
:01:35. > :01:36.for the school holidays ` and in one case, a family emergency: I have
:01:37. > :01:41.come over particularly for the birth of my first grandchild. My
:01:42. > :01:47.daughter`in`law is going to have the baby at lunchtime so I was
:01:48. > :01:51.desperately hoping it would be back on. Somebody is looking after me!
:01:52. > :01:55.Relief for passengers to get back on board here ` and relief for Condor
:01:56. > :02:01.that the striking crew that have been on here for 14 days are no
:02:02. > :02:04.longer comandeering it. This was where the dozen or so crew members
:02:05. > :02:07.lived whilst on board ` creating sleeping quarters here, and even
:02:08. > :02:11.having a tv to watch the olympics. But now it's back to normality. .
:02:12. > :02:17.And back in Guernsey, albeit a bit too late for those who had their
:02:18. > :02:23.half term plans disrupted. The boat may be moving again but it looks
:02:24. > :02:31.like relations between Condor and the union still have some way to go.
:02:32. > :02:36.We will appoint a lawyer to get some legal steps because a lot of things
:02:37. > :02:41.are not in compliance with the law so it is not possible to accept
:02:42. > :02:46.that. We need to try and get the company to get what we want. It is
:02:47. > :02:50.important we put this behind us and work together and try and learn from
:02:51. > :02:56.whatever issues they have. We have learned a few issues already. We do
:02:57. > :03:03.not recognise the advice they had from the ITF union. We do not
:03:04. > :03:08.recognise that organisations or any comments that organisation have not
:03:09. > :03:12.comments that the company will listen to. ITF is ruling out further
:03:13. > :03:15.strike action at the moment as it says passengers have suffered
:03:16. > :03:18.enough. And as the dispute moves on to the next level Condors customers
:03:19. > :03:23.will be hoping they're left out of it.
:03:24. > :03:26.Smoking in cars carrying children in Jersey should be banned according to
:03:27. > :03:29.the results of a public consultation. Almost eight out of
:03:30. > :03:32.ten people who responded said they'd support a law banning it. There was
:03:33. > :03:36.also support for making children's playgrounds smoke`free. The Health
:03:37. > :03:39.authorities have welcomed the findings ` which will be used to
:03:40. > :03:41.form the States' next Tobacco Strategy.
:03:42. > :03:46.Electricity prices in Jersey are going up by one and a half per cent
:03:47. > :03:49.from April. It's to cover the costs of generating power on the island.
:03:50. > :03:52.Jersey Electricity has been using the power station at La Colette
:03:53. > :03:55.since last April, when an undersea cable from France was lost.
:03:56. > :03:58.Hundreds of people gathered in Jersey this morning for a memorial
:03:59. > :04:01.service for the former Lieutenant Governor Sir Michael Wilkes. Sir
:04:02. > :04:04.Michael, who was the Queen's representative in the island between
:04:05. > :04:11.1995 and 2000, died from cancer last autumn.
:04:12. > :04:14.Jersey is experiencing a record period of falling house prices,
:04:15. > :04:17.according to new official figures. Since the last peak in 2009, average
:04:18. > :04:21.prices have dropped about six per cent. The average price of ?375 000
:04:22. > :04:29.for a two bedroom house last year was the lowest recorded since 2 07.
:04:30. > :04:32.A little earlier I spoke to Roger Trower from Broadlands Estate Agents
:04:33. > :04:44.to find out who are the winners and losers from this situation. The
:04:45. > :04:49.purchasers are the winners. There are certain parts of the market
:04:50. > :04:56.which have been overcooked. But not to the extent that has been said
:04:57. > :05:01.with regard to the statistics, you can prove lots of different things
:05:02. > :05:09.coming out from there. We have seen a off of prices in some parts. Can
:05:10. > :05:14.people afford to buy? That is where we have seen readjustment. We have
:05:15. > :05:18.had a lot of supplied to the lower end of the market where young people
:05:19. > :05:23.hope to come in and they should be able to buy as long as family
:05:24. > :05:27.members help with deposits and things like that. The banks are at
:05:28. > :05:30.last beginning to be more helpful. The States Housing Deposit Scheme
:05:31. > :05:36.gave some people interest free loans to help them ` what impact has that
:05:37. > :05:41.had? It has had some but the criteria for people to take up that
:05:42. > :05:52.all for was quite half. We rightly so. `` quite tough. Quite rightly
:05:53. > :05:58.so. If people can be helped to get on the housing ladder that is all
:05:59. > :06:04.very well, you should be buying to have a home for a considerable
:06:05. > :06:10.length of time, for that reason not to make money out of it. Hopefully
:06:11. > :06:15.people are saying, that is our house for the next ten years. What more
