:00:00. > 3:59:59BBC News Channel, but now on BBC One, it's time for the news where

:00:00. > :00:11.you are. Good evening.

:00:12. > :00:15.Guernsey will have a new Chief Minister in two weeks. Official

:00:16. > :00:18.nominations open tomorrow for the job made vacant yesterday by Deputy

:00:19. > :00:22.Peter Harwood. He stood down amid media coverage of his previous roles

:00:23. > :00:27.at both the Channel Islands Stock Exchange and the body that regulates

:00:28. > :00:38.it. Penny Elderfield joined me from Guernsey earlier with the details.

:00:39. > :00:41.As you'd expect, although the States were meeting today to discuss other

:00:42. > :00:44.matters, the situation with the Chief Minister was what got them

:00:45. > :00:48.chatting in the corridors. And arriving at the States this morning,

:00:49. > :00:50.and speaking publicly for the first time, Deputy Peter Harwood didn t

:00:51. > :00:54.have much to add. The reason is as I stated.

:00:55. > :00:56.Where does this leave you with the next six weeks? You remain Chief

:00:57. > :01:01.Minister, will that be rather difficult?

:01:02. > :01:05.It is not ideal but I thought the States will move quickly to appoint

:01:06. > :01:07.my successor. What are your thoughts on who that

:01:08. > :01:13.should be? That is a matter for the States

:01:14. > :01:16.And asking the same questions to other deputies, not many would

:01:17. > :01:20.commit to who they'd like to see as the next Chief Minister, or whether

:01:21. > :01:24.indeed they'd stand themselves. So, are there likely candidates

:01:25. > :01:28.Nominations open tomorrow, so we'll start to get confirmation then. But

:01:29. > :01:32.there are a few names doing the rounds. The Social Security Minister

:01:33. > :01:35.Allister Langlois is one of the first to confirm. And longest

:01:36. > :01:38.standing politician Mary Lowe isn't ruling it out. Along with current

:01:39. > :01:41.Deputy Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq, and former Chief Minister

:01:42. > :01:45.Lyndon Trott. So a few potentials. But there are still those who think

:01:46. > :01:49.it was a mistake for Deputy Harwood to go.

:01:50. > :01:52.I am very disappointed. I don't think he should have gone. I just

:01:53. > :02:00.wonder whether there was political pressure on him. That worries me.

:02:01. > :02:03.As I said, nominations open tomorrow at 9am, and by this time in a

:02:04. > :02:17.fortnight, we should know who's getting the top job.

:02:18. > :02:20.Jersey's General Hospital is increasing the number of nurses who

:02:21. > :02:23.can prescribe drugs and medication to patients. The hospital introduced

:02:24. > :02:26.nurse prescribing for the first time last year. Health bosses says

:02:27. > :02:28.patients are seen faster and can even be discharged sooner. But is

:02:29. > :02:31.patient safety at risk? At Jersey General Hospital, Chris

:02:32. > :02:34.Sparkes has his appoitnment with Sister Angela Moss. Chris suffers

:02:35. > :02:37.from a heart condition and sees Angela to get his medication. Angela

:02:38. > :02:40.is one of the island's recently qualified nurse practitioners

:02:41. > :02:43.meaning she can prescribe patients like Chris with his drugs without

:02:44. > :02:45.having to wait for a doctor to do it.

:02:46. > :02:49.Before, we would have to interrupt the consultation and I would have to

:02:50. > :02:52.find a doctor to provide his presecription. That might take time

:02:53. > :02:55.in order to get the history and provide the prescription.

:02:56. > :02:56.Time`saving is one of the biggest factors.

:02:57. > :03:00.Angela qualified last summer and over in the classroom this is the

:03:01. > :03:03.next group of qualified nurses put forward to become nurse prescribers.

:03:04. > :03:06.They undergo a strict six month training programme as well as exams

:03:07. > :03:09.before they go back on the hospital ward and these trainees will be

:03:10. > :03:13.qualified later in the year. The fact that I am able to prescribe

:03:14. > :03:15.and undertake a consultation with the patient will make inroads

:03:16. > :03:25.towards my autonomous practice. It needs to be demanding because we

:03:26. > :03:33.are talking about patient safety. Nurse prescribing first was launched

:03:34. > :03:36.in the UK in 2006. It's claimed it cuts waiting times for patients but

:03:37. > :03:39.should it really be nurses that prescribe us medication rather than

:03:40. > :03:47.doctors? Hospital bosses here insist there isn't a risk to patient

:03:48. > :03:51.safety. We are looking at some of our most

:03:52. > :03:54.experienced nurses, who have an enhanced knowledge of the medical

:03:55. > :03:58.condition and the medication that is right for the patient. So it is the

:03:59. > :04:03.right person in the right place at the right time.

:04:04. > :04:05.Back in the clinic Chris' consultation continues. He's given

:04:06. > :04:11.his prescription before he goes to collect his drugs from the pharmacy.

:04:12. > :04:14.I felt she was competent and it gave me confidence in the treatment I was

:04:15. > :04:16.given. Nurse practitioners can also

:04:17. > :04:22.prescribe and discharge patients on wards like A too. Health bosses

:04:23. > :04:25.say having done this also helps save the health service money but insist

:04:26. > :04:34.patients, like Chris, are the ones that that see the most benefit.

:04:35. > :04:38.This year marks 100 years since the beginning of the First World War,

:04:39. > :04:41.and here on the BBC we're looking at how this global conflict impacted on

:04:42. > :04:42.the Channel islands. Mike Wilkins reports on Guernsey's secret

:04:43. > :04:57.sea`base. Into the depths allied ships

:04:58. > :05:00.continued to plunge. Late in 19 6 German submarines began to sink a

:05:01. > :05:03.large number of merchant vessels taking supplies to the front lines.

:05:04. > :05:07.So in order to protect the shipping, the British and French governments

:05:08. > :05:15.decided to set up a secret seaplane base on Guernsey.

:05:16. > :05:27.This photograph shows the model yacht pond then with the frame of

:05:28. > :05:30.the hangar. In the summer of 19 7, despite the mission being

:05:31. > :05:33.classified, more than 100 French servicemen came to the island along

:05:34. > :05:37.with 12 sea planes, although the number of both of these was soon to

:05:38. > :05:41.grow. The biplanes could carry two or three crew with two bombs on four

:05:42. > :05:44.hour patrols. And within a year the aviators had proved to be very

:05:45. > :05:54.successful in hunting and destroying U`boats prowling around our shores.

:05:55. > :06:00.Within 18 months, they had formed about 25 submarines and discovered

:06:01. > :06:09.the minefields. It was very successful. The whole regiment were

:06:10. > :06:13.awarded a medal by the French Army. Many people weren't and still aren't

:06:14. > :06:17.aware the base ever existed, it was top secret after all. But when many

:06:18. > :06:23.think of the slaughter on the West Front, this story shows that there

:06:24. > :06:27.were some successes closer to home. That's the late news from BBC

:06:28. > :06:28.Channel Islands ` David's here next with our weather and the national

:06:29. > :06:43.forecast follows him. Goodnight Good evening. We have had some

:06:44. > :06:49.sunshine today. There will be some rain overnight but that will clear

:06:50. > :06:55.quickly. A day of scattered showers to come tomorrow. The rain will set

:06:56. > :07:00.in tonight and move pretty fast so that by the morning it will have

:07:01. > :07:12.gone. What replaces it is some Sunnis bells. `` Sani spells. 1

:07:13. > :07:23.degrees will be the top temperature. We will see some blustery westerly

:07:24. > :07:25.winds. Saturday could also be quite wet with dry weather on Sunday.

:07:26. > :07:34.Good night. day on Friday, wet snow around and a

:07:35. > :07:39.breeze blowing as well. Tricky into the weekend. And now we have the

:07:40. > :07:41.national forecast. Good evening. We know it has been a

:07:42. > :07:43.wet winter
