:00:20. > :00:20.Young people in Guernsey ard turning Don't forget, there is a first

:00:21. > :00:23.Young people in Guernsey ard turning to alcohol because there's nothing

:00:24. > :00:26.to do. That's the view of some schoolchildren who have takdn part

:00:27. > :00:29.in a survey of more than 600 full`time students. The latdst

:00:30. > :00:31.results from the Education Department show that many are

:00:32. > :00:34.drinking alcohol regularly `nd a significant number are smokhng

:00:35. > :00:37.cigarettes. Mike Wilkins reports Happy relaxing with friends but some

:00:38. > :00:40.young people are consuming `lcohol, cigarettes and drugs on a rdgular

:00:41. > :00:43.basis. When asked, almost h`lf of those surveyed said they'd had an

:00:44. > :00:46.alcoholic drink in the past seven days. Almost a quarter of students

:00:47. > :00:49.smoke cigarettes, many opting for cheap products. And more th`n a

:00:50. > :00:53.quarter had tried cannabis. Some told me today that they drank

:00:54. > :01:04.alcohol because there was a lack of things to do. I do a lot of sport,

:01:05. > :01:07.personally, so I always havd something to do. But even if the

:01:08. > :01:11.cinema was upgraded, it there for kids to do. The new skate p`rk is

:01:12. > :01:16.excellent for teenage boys but there's nothing there for ghrls

:01:17. > :01:20.When we want to socialise wd just want to sit and chat and socialise

:01:21. > :01:24.with friends we don't see ott of school, and the only time wd can do

:01:25. > :01:27.that is at a party when there is drinking involved, and therd's not

:01:28. > :01:30.really anywhere than the be`ch we can go in the summer. There's

:01:31. > :01:37.nowhere else in winter wherd we can socialise. We've already sedn the

:01:38. > :01:41.students themselves, we are surprised at the levels of `lcohol.

:01:42. > :01:46.We need to address that with a strategy. Similarly with tobacco

:01:47. > :01:50.education. We saw a quarter of those young people who smoked had taken it

:01:51. > :01:53.up since they had joined thd post`16 establishment. It should be noted

:01:54. > :01:56.that there were many positives in the survey but two glaring hssues

:01:57. > :01:59.are that cigarettes and alcohol remain a problem that won't go away.

:02:00. > :02:03.Well, Guernsey's government does have a drugs and alcohol strategy.

:02:04. > :02:12.Earlier, I asked the person in charge if it's working. Acttally, we

:02:13. > :02:20.were quite encouraged by sole of the post`16 survey. It showed that

:02:21. > :02:25.cannabis use is only by 9% of young people, which we feel is extremely

:02:26. > :02:33.encouraging. We still know we have a way to go, but we are getting the

:02:34. > :02:37.information that we need to young people about misusing alcohol. How

:02:38. > :02:45.it can affect not only their health but also their families and

:02:46. > :02:48.relationships. There are just two candidates vying to be Guernsey s

:02:49. > :02:51.next Chief Minister. At close of nominations this evening, Ddputy

:02:52. > :02:55.Allister Langlois and Jonathan Le Tocq were the only two names in the

:02:56. > :02:58.hat. The election will be hdld at a special States sitting next

:02:59. > :03:01.Wednesday. Meanwhile, about 85% of people who could have voted in last

:03:02. > :03:04.night's St Helier by`elections didn't. Both deputies`elect, Nick Le

:03:05. > :03:07.Cornu and Sam Mezec, stood on a mandate of electoral reform and won

:03:08. > :03:11.their seats with just a couple of hundred votes. They'll have the same

:03:12. > :03:18.powers in the assembly and salary as Jersey's Chief Minister. Sole say

:03:19. > :03:22.that's not right. We've tridd, and the two candidates who are coming in

:03:23. > :03:26.as deputies, they have tried to get more equality in terms of how votes

:03:27. > :03:30.are distributed between constituencies. Obviously it's been

:03:31. > :03:33.very difficult to get that, because there are certain vested interests

:03:34. > :03:38.who don't wish to willing crush their power. No, it's not rhght but

:03:39. > :03:44.how to get from saying it's not right to actually changing ht is

:03:45. > :03:48.proving very difficult. Unelployment in Guernsey has fallen. At the end

:03:49. > :03:52.of February, 443 people werd looking for work. That's a drop of 22 on

:03:53. > :03:55.January, but four more than at the same time last year. 20 people were

:03:56. > :04:02.registered as unemployed in Alderney. What would you sax if your

:04:03. > :04:05.four`year`old came home frol school with this? It's a booklet to help

:04:06. > :04:08.parents explain issues surrounding sex and relationships to thdir

:04:09. > :04:12.children. The pamphlet is produced by a Jersey charity and somd 10 000

:04:13. > :04:15.copies have been given to primary school and even pre`school children

:04:16. > :04:19.in the island. As you can ilagine, it's created quite a stir, `s Emma

:04:20. > :04:26.Chambers reports. These children could be... Bullies? And who else?

:04:27. > :04:29.Strangers. Talking to your eight`year`old son about sensitive

:04:30. > :04:33.issues such as staying safe online, puberty and sex can be diffhcult,

:04:34. > :04:35.but not for Ally. She says ht's been made easier because of this book

:04:36. > :04:44.called A Parent's Toolkit. Ht advises parents on how to ddal with

:04:45. > :04:47.those awkward questions. I found he has opened up a lot more since we've

:04:48. > :04:51.had this book. He's asked md questions, where as before hf I

:04:52. > :04:54.broached the subject he would be embarrassed. When we sat down

:04:55. > :04:57.together he saw we were both embarrassed, and the book hdlped us

:04:58. > :05:00.look at it together. Although it's helped many it has also caused

:05:01. > :05:03.upset. Not about what's in them but how the books were received by

:05:04. > :05:07.parents. 10,000 copies have been given out across Jersey in schools

:05:08. > :05:14.and nurseries. Many of them being handed directly to children as young

:05:15. > :05:18.as four and five, like Sandra's With my eldest I don't mind, because

:05:19. > :05:23.they know so much. But with the youngest, I believe the teacher

:05:24. > :05:26.should... Not put it in an envelope, but as we pick up the

:05:27. > :05:30.children then handed to us `nd we got the option to pick it up or not.

:05:31. > :05:33.I find it very disturbing for little ones. The charity which makds the

:05:34. > :05:38.book says it didn't want to cause offence. It's a shame that ht has

:05:39. > :05:43.been given directly to the children. The book itself is quite a

:05:44. > :05:46.nice book in the fact it's got cartoons and everything. Hopefully

:05:47. > :05:50.it wouldn't have caused too much distress. Obviously, it sparked off

:05:51. > :05:55.some discussions with children and parents. We are very sorry hf

:05:56. > :05:58.parents have taken offence to it. The help and advice this frde book

:05:59. > :06:02.gives may have been overshadowed by the handling of it. Acet hopes it

:06:03. > :06:04.will help more parents like Ally and is in talks of supplying thd book to

:06:05. > :06:15.mums and dads in Guernsey too. In sport, there were mixed fortunes

:06:16. > :06:18.for the Channel Islands cricket teams on the opening day of the

:06:19. > :06:21.World Division Five tournamdnt in Malaysia. Jersey started with a 66

:06:22. > :06:24.run victory over Nigeria. Mdanwhile, Guernsey started with a narrow

:06:25. > :06:27.33`run defeat to Cayman Isl`nds The top two teams at the end of the

:06:28. > :06:29.tournament will be promoted. Tomorrow, Guernsey face Nigdria and

:06:30. > :06:38.Jersey take on Tanzania. One more day rather cloudy skies and

:06:39. > :06:41.for the weekend we are in for retreat, because the sunshine is

:06:42. > :06:46.back out. It will probably last for much of the weekend and into next

:06:47. > :06:49.week. A lot of cloud around at first tomorrow morning. It comes `n

:06:50. > :06:53.overnight to produce some lhght rain by the morning. Clouding ovdr in the

:06:54. > :06:59.second half of the night and not as cold as it has been. Winds from the

:07:00. > :07:03.south`west. Tomorrow, we have a great start with some patchx, light

:07:04. > :07:06.rain, until around the end of the morning and then things start to

:07:07. > :07:15.improve. The improvement coling from the North first. Winds becoling

:07:16. > :07:21.northerly and light and a temperature of 11. It looks pretty

:07:22. > :07:28.good into the weekend, both Saturday and Sunday are fine and dry with

:07:29. > :07:29.plenty of sunshine. In a second the United Kingdom forecast. From us,

:07:30. > :07:31.it's good night. outlook for London. Temperatures

:07:32. > :07:41.stay like this. Hello, after the teenage tantrums of

:07:42. > :07:47.the last couple of months, the weather is going to move into more

:07:48. > :07:49.sedate middle age will stop maybe tonight is the midlife crisis

:07:50. > :07:54.because it is still likely -- middle age. Breezy and cloudy for most will

:07:55. > :08:01.stop but it will not be cold, but wet, particularly across Cumbria.

:08:02. > :08:04.The railway -- the rain is reluctant to move from Northern Ireland,

:08:05. > :08:09.Scotland, increasingly wet across Wales later. More patchy. West

:08:10. > :08:11.England, the Midlands and East of the Pennines, temperatures no lower

:08:12. > :08:12.than 10
