:00:00. > :00:12.Good evening. BBC News at Six so it's goodbye

:00:13. > :00:14.Good evening. No more competition between Aurigny

:00:15. > :00:16.and Blue Islands, but questions remain about strike action and price

:00:17. > :00:19.rises. Joining forces: Why Jersey's Army

:00:20. > :00:23.Reserves are recruiting in Guernsey for the first time.

:00:24. > :00:34.Plus ` why playing dress ups is keeping children out of hospital.

:00:35. > :00:38.And after all of the visibility problems of the last couple of days,

:00:39. > :00:48.this weekend that Mr will clear and hopefully we will get some sunshine.

:00:49. > :00:53.Two airlines which compete on the Jersey and Guernsey route start

:00:54. > :00:56.sharing an aircraft this weekend. Blue Islands and Aurigny will

:00:57. > :01:01."codeshare", which means they sell places on the same passenger plane.

:01:02. > :01:05.The move has led to possible strike action over working conditions for

:01:06. > :01:08.ground staff. Jen Smith reports. For years, Blue Islands and Aurigny

:01:09. > :01:11.have competed against each other on the Jersey`Guernsey route, but now

:01:12. > :01:16.they've agreed it'll be better to work together to cut costs. Blue

:01:17. > :01:19.Islands' planes will be used, but Aurigny will also sell tickets for

:01:20. > :01:24.the flights under what's called a "codeshare". The deal means fewer

:01:25. > :01:27.flights but bigger planes. But as competition on the route is removed,

:01:28. > :01:33.how do passengers know they'll be no price hikes?

:01:34. > :01:43.There won't be any price collusion. We have our cost of operation and we

:01:44. > :01:46.will try and sell of `` all of our seats and we achieve that with a

:01:47. > :01:49.blend of cheap fears and higher`priced theirs. It will lead

:01:50. > :01:54.to a better deal. The deal hasn't been without

:01:55. > :01:57.problems. Baggage handlers in Jersey have recently threatened strike

:01:58. > :02:00.action after seeing their hours cut when Blue Islands moved to using

:02:01. > :02:06.Aurigny's workers. Today, the Blue Islands boss said that's not up to

:02:07. > :02:11.him. That is something you will need to ask Servisair. We are looking at

:02:12. > :02:14.our own company. That is a question for those guys.

:02:15. > :02:18.The union Unite told the BBC today it's in new talks with its members

:02:19. > :02:20.after hearing back from Servisair ` the company which employs the

:02:21. > :02:23.baggage handlers. Both airlines are keen to stress the new codeshare

:02:24. > :02:31.won't cause disruption for passengers. But neither could

:02:32. > :02:35.guarantee flights prices won't rise. Meanwhile, it also means the end of

:02:36. > :02:38.an era for Channel Islands Aviation after over 40 years. The last

:02:39. > :02:42.scheduled Trislander aeroplane will fly between Guernsey and Jersey

:02:43. > :02:45.tomorrow ` fog permitting. Edward Sault has been to meet some of those

:02:46. > :02:55.who spent their careers working on the iconic island aircraft. If you

:02:56. > :02:59.live in the Channel Islands you will recognise these evil planes. Today

:03:00. > :03:07.some of the pilots who worked on them gathered in Jersey to reminisce

:03:08. > :03:13.about times gone by. This plane was so solidly built and typically

:03:14. > :03:16.British. It was an ingenious design. It has been part of building the

:03:17. > :03:25.Channel Islands into what they are today. It was like flying a small

:03:26. > :03:29.aircraft but it was an airline. It could do things that some of the

:03:30. > :03:33.bigger airlines could not do. This was St Ouen's beach in Jersey

:03:34. > :03:37.in 1998 when a Trislander, on its way to Guernsey, was forced to make

:03:38. > :03:41.an emergency landing much to the amazement to those on the ground.

:03:42. > :03:46.The man at the controls that day was Chris Winch. He says the aeroplane

:03:47. > :03:50.was very trustworthy. Some things it would land and you would not even

:03:51. > :03:55.realise one of the tyres had burst. The passengers could not visit and

:03:56. > :04:02.they would tell us, do you know that higher has burst. Whilst it may be

:04:03. > :04:04.the end of a neighbour for flights between Jersey and Guernsey

:04:05. > :04:09.tomorrow, it is not the end of the story. The flights will continue for

:04:10. > :04:14.the foreseeable future until a replacement can be found. This site

:04:15. > :04:30.will be less familiar in the skies of the islands as well as that all

:04:31. > :04:33.too familiar sound. For the first time ever, Jersey is

:04:34. > :04:37.looking to Guernsey to help swell its ranks in the Army Reserve. It

:04:38. > :04:40.used to be known as the Territorial Army, now the Jersey Field Squadron

:04:41. > :04:43.is recruiting on new territory, as Mike Wilkins reports.

:04:44. > :04:46.The Channel Islands have a long tradition of serving in the British

:04:47. > :04:49.Armed Forces. The Jersey Field Squadron is the local Army Reserve

:04:50. > :04:53.Unit in the Channel Islands. And for the first time, it's been recruiting

:04:54. > :04:55.here, in Guernsey, this week. It's mainly because the unit's

:04:56. > :04:58.undermanned, but it also sees Guernsey as an untapped resource.

:04:59. > :05:00.Yes, that is not about the Jersey Field Squadron. It is the Army

:05:01. > :05:03.recruiting and the Channel Islands. The Field Squadron as the local

:05:04. > :05:09.reserve unit and the Channel Islands. We are telling young men

:05:10. > :05:12.and women to join the Army Reserve if they live here.

:05:13. > :05:15.None of the potential soldiers of tomorrow wanted to talk on camera

:05:16. > :05:18.today, they were far more interested in getting their little hands on the

:05:19. > :05:22.weapons, including rifles and grenade launchers. So how would a

:05:23. > :05:26.Guernseyman take to serving in a Jersey unit? Well, there are already

:05:27. > :05:36.some who told me the old enemy isn't all that bad. I have been accepted

:05:37. > :05:40.well into the Jersey Field Squadron. The arrival some people believe

:05:41. > :05:44.exists does not happen in Jersey. They are a great bunch of guys and

:05:45. > :05:47.everyone So, as the Army Reserve looks for more recruits, men and

:05:48. > :05:53.women from Jersey and Guernsey could soon be serving together.

:05:54. > :05:56.Seems to gel as a team. The head of the Channel Islands'

:05:57. > :05:59.competition regulator is stepping down after two years in the role.

:06:00. > :06:02.Andrew Riseley will be replaced on first April by Michael Byrne until a

:06:03. > :06:08.permanent chief executive is chosen. Mr Riseley says he wants to relocate

:06:09. > :06:12.closer to his home in Australia. Next ` could this be the answer to

:06:13. > :06:16.keeping your child safe around dogs? After a special campaign in schools

:06:17. > :06:19.to teach children how to behave around the animals, the number of

:06:20. > :06:22.youngsters turning up at Jersey Hospital's Emergency Department with

:06:23. > :06:26.dog bites has fallen. From a four`year average of 21 admissions,

:06:27. > :06:40.just eight were seen last year. Louise Walter reports. Can anyone

:06:41. > :06:43.think about anyway that a dog may You don't have to be Doctor Dolittle

:06:44. > :06:47.to understand animals ` at least that's the message of this lesson

:06:48. > :06:48.teaching children how to read dogs' body language and then how to

:06:49. > :06:55.respond. Try to speak to us?

:06:56. > :07:02.And it involves a little role play from this Year one class ` an age

:07:03. > :07:07.crucial to target. We know from is this the sticks and research that

:07:08. > :07:11.children regularly mess the signals that dogs give off. The seagulls

:07:12. > :07:15.baring their teeth and they think they are smiling. It seems an

:07:16. > :07:32.obvious campaign to roll out to them at this stage to keep the children

:07:33. > :07:35.say. Not to hold them. Lessons that should be remembered at

:07:36. > :07:39.home, not just when meeting new dogs. That is according to animal

:07:40. > :07:42.behaviour used Rosie Barclay. Animal behaviourist Rosie Barclay

:07:43. > :07:45.says the majority of dog bites come from family pets where children

:07:46. > :07:53.might be naturally cautious of a strange dog. A lot of it is down to

:07:54. > :07:58.fear. Because children cannot read the signals they do not understand.

:07:59. > :08:03.We forced the dogs into having to bite us. It's hoped these lessons

:08:04. > :08:07.will help create a dog`savvy generation of children in the

:08:08. > :08:10.island. Jersey's rugby club has transformed

:08:11. > :08:14.due to the success of its first team and that's encouraged more and more

:08:15. > :08:18.boys to take up the sport from as young as ten. And for one or two

:08:19. > :08:21.from each age group, success at the Hampshire County trials is the first

:08:22. > :08:24.step to following their heroes to professional level. So how much

:08:25. > :08:27.training, support and money does it take to become an elite rugby

:08:28. > :08:33.player? Emma Chambers has been finding out.

:08:34. > :08:37.Even in dense fog they train. Hours on the pitch, pushing to become the

:08:38. > :08:41.best player they can be. And it's paying off. Will ` seen here wearing

:08:42. > :08:45.the blue scrum cap ` has beaten hundreds to be selected in the

:08:46. > :08:50.Hampshire County squad. Nearly every weekend he goes over and trains with

:08:51. > :08:58.them, but at just 15 years old, and studying for his GCSEs, how does he

:08:59. > :09:02.manage it? A lot of late nights, to be honest, that is most of it. Just

:09:03. > :09:08.rugby and straight home, two hours of homework and then go to sleep.

:09:09. > :09:12.Every day as a standard. Is it worth it? Yes, definitely.

:09:13. > :09:15.Will wouldn't be able to pursue his dream without the support of his

:09:16. > :09:21.school and his family. His dad has spent about ?1000 on travel costs.

:09:22. > :09:26.Every weekend, every time they go to train and play, it means one is of

:09:27. > :09:34.the parents accompanies the boys to go across, so logistically it is not

:09:35. > :09:37.easy. The club are very supportive. Especially financially but it does

:09:38. > :09:39.not cover the whole cost of the weekend when we are away.

:09:40. > :09:42.The club provides some sponsorship to enable academy players the

:09:43. > :09:53.opportunity of playing with and against UK teams. On flights alone

:09:54. > :09:57.we spend around ?212,000. The parents contribute quite a lot to

:09:58. > :09:59.that as well. It is a huge amount of money.

:10:00. > :10:02.With more high`level training on the horizon for Will, his path to a

:10:03. > :10:13.professional career could become a lot more clear. Some really ghostly

:10:14. > :10:16.scenes there, wasn't there? Foe is affected travel and the Channel

:10:17. > :10:18.Islands for the second day running. Flights were again delayed and

:10:19. > :10:21.cancelled at Jersey and Guernsey Airports because of the weather. It

:10:22. > :10:25.follows a day of disruption yesterday. There's a backlog of

:10:26. > :10:28.passengers waiting to get in and out of the island, and Jersey Airport

:10:29. > :10:30.says delays could continue into the weekend. Time for the weather

:10:31. > :10:48.update. You are quite correct. That Ford has

:10:49. > :10:53.lifted quite a bit. That process will continue overnight tonight. We

:10:54. > :10:58.will not have too many problems with mist and fog over the weekend but

:10:59. > :11:01.there could be that bad `` backlog continuing. The weather is much

:11:02. > :11:06.better, there is much better visibility. Some brief Mr tomorrow

:11:07. > :11:11.morning but nothing as bad as what we have seen recently. All courtesy

:11:12. > :11:14.of this area of high pressure. That will move around a little bit over

:11:15. > :11:18.the next couple of days but it will dominate the weather over the

:11:19. > :11:23.weekend. It has not changed much by the middle of the day on Sunday

:11:24. > :11:28.either. North West winds which are strong enough to prevent too much

:11:29. > :11:33.missed or fog developing and also allowing some sunshine every now and

:11:34. > :11:37.again. There will be some missed tonight, however. The winds are from

:11:38. > :11:42.the North`Westerly direction and that will bring down the daytime

:11:43. > :11:47.temperatures. Night`time temperatures around seven or eight

:11:48. > :11:50.Celsius. Remember, the sea temperature is only about nine or 10

:11:51. > :11:57.degrees. The sun will return tomorrow afternoon with a top

:11:58. > :12:01.temperature of 12 or 13 degrees. That is the forecast for the coastal

:12:02. > :12:07.waters, the winds are North`Westerly. Times of high

:12:08. > :12:29.water: Pretty good for Sunday, not a lot of

:12:30. > :12:33.change in that pattern. We will continue with fine weather. More

:12:34. > :12:37.cloud next week and it turns more settled for the middle of next week

:12:38. > :12:45.but until then it is fine and dry with sunshine for the weekend. Here

:12:46. > :12:51.are some pictures of when the circus came to town today to Jersey.

:12:52. > :12:55.Shoppers in St Helier were treated to a glance of the show and they

:12:56. > :13:06.were clowning around at the precinct. Goodbye.

:13:07. > :13:09.Exeter Chiefs and an economic boost for the area.

:13:10. > :13:13.Plus: An MBE for the historian who's spent 30 years delving into Devon's

:13:14. > :13:22.past. And a happy ending to the tale of

:13:23. > :13:26.the puppies adopted by a new mum. Time for the sport now and it'll be

:13:27. > :13:29.all eyes on Sandy Park this weekend as the Exeter Chiefs get ready for

:13:30. > :13:38.the biggest game in their history. Andy Birkett has been there today to

:13:39. > :13:47.soak up the pre`match atmosphere. Here I am at Sandy Park. The Chiefs

:13:48. > :13:52.are hosting and starring in their first`ever major final. Exeter have

:13:53. > :13:55.been building towards this day for a while and although the scoreboard

:13:56. > :14:01.may have the team 's starting equal, home advantage could give

:14:02. > :14:06.them the edge. The skipper will lead the team out and it will be a packed

:14:07. > :14:14.house. These opportunities don't come along too often. There has also

:14:15. > :14:19.been a period of achievement in recent years yet nothing to show

:14:20. > :14:25.from that in terms of silverware. This opportunity doesn't come often.

:14:26. > :14:33.We are excited. They go into the match full of confidence. Really

:14:34. > :14:38.looking forward to this spectacle and enjoying the atmosphere and the

:14:39. > :14:45.occasion and hopefully, we will get what we want out of the game. The

:14:46. > :14:50.opposition have only beaten Northampton once. We know how good

:14:51. > :14:58.they are and they have international across`the`board. When the teams met

:14:59. > :15:04.last month, it was the leaders who snatched a late win. We don't have

:15:05. > :15:13.any worries about beating Northampton. With the final

:15:14. > :15:20.preparations underway, the message is clear: Go out and enjoy your day

:15:21. > :15:25.in the sun. I am joined now by a former Exeter Chiefs. You have seen

:15:26. > :15:32.both sides of it. How big an event is this? Massive. You look all the

:15:33. > :15:38.premiership clubs which are in the mix. International final hosted on

:15:39. > :15:45.our home ground. Sold out on the first half of Monday morning. Where

:15:46. > :15:50.is your money at the weekend? Obviously, on the Chiefs, but

:15:51. > :15:56.looking at it, we play Bath in the semifinal, we beat them, we are at

:15:57. > :16:04.home, Northampton beat us by less than appoint a month ago. We will

:16:05. > :16:10.find out on Sunday. The Chiefs rise is not just good news for the

:16:11. > :16:16.country, it is good news for rugby fans as a whole. This final and the

:16:17. > :16:21.Rugby World Cup next year should provide local businesses with a

:16:22. > :16:26.massive boost. Rugby is becoming big business in

:16:27. > :16:30.Exeter. These posts promote next year's World Cup and many firms are

:16:31. > :16:36.following in the successful slipstream. This pub is little more

:16:37. > :16:40.than a drop kick from Sandy Park. Its bedrooms are booked for matched

:16:41. > :16:47.is well in advance and for this weekend, it has had to turn away 100

:16:48. > :16:51.potential bookings. We are busy throughout the year and especially

:16:52. > :17:00.rugby matches, but this weekend, we have got a waiting list for tables.

:17:01. > :17:04.Reservations are high. This is a crucial delivery: 5000 pints of

:17:05. > :17:17.Devon brewed beer have been brought in for Sunday's final. They will

:17:18. > :17:24.taste it here. They will say, what a great day they had out in Exeter.

:17:25. > :17:31.Fantastic beer. All part of the experience. It raises the profile.

:17:32. > :17:35.No one is sure how much money is brought into the local economy by

:17:36. > :17:48.the Rugby club here but conservative estimates reckon it can be

:17:49. > :17:55.?15`20,000,000. It all brings business into the city. We have got

:17:56. > :17:59.the science park out there. We are looking at the world, not just the

:18:00. > :18:03.UK, and the more we can for Exeter on the map, the better it is for

:18:04. > :18:08.business. Work on improving the ground will pause on Sunday as the

:18:09. > :18:12.Chiefs hope to match success of the field with success on it.

:18:13. > :18:15.Looking at this weekend's football and in the Championship, Yeovil Town

:18:16. > :18:19.will have their work cut out at promotion`chasing QPR as they look

:18:20. > :18:22.to climb out of the bottom three. In League Two, Plymouth Argyle's recent

:18:23. > :18:26.form has seen them shoot up the table but they face a tough trip to

:18:27. > :18:30.second`placed Scunthorpe. At the other end of the table, Torquay

:18:31. > :18:33.United head to Cheltenham, buoyed by their midweek win over Rochdale, but

:18:34. > :18:38.still seven points from safety. Exeter City's slump in form has seen

:18:39. > :18:43.them slip into the relegation mix. They meet Newport on Sunday.

:18:44. > :18:46.And finally, the first round of the British Motocross Championship is

:18:47. > :18:49.taking place in Cornwall this Sunday. The best riders from all

:18:50. > :19:02.over Europe will be taking part at the MotoPark in Landrake.

:19:03. > :19:11.Well done to the Plymouth diver down. Good luck to Tom Daley who

:19:12. > :19:15.gets his campaign underway on Sunday.

:19:16. > :19:26.A historian from Devon has today received an MBE for his lifelong

:19:27. > :19:29.passion for the county's past. Though American by birth, Doctor

:19:30. > :19:33.Todd Gray, as he's usually known, has spent the last 30 years bringing

:19:34. > :19:37.history to life in the South West. He was awarded his medal by Prince

:19:38. > :19:41.Charles at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace this morning. Before the

:19:42. > :19:50.ceremony, John Henderson went to meet Dr Grey to find out why he's

:19:51. > :19:56.devoted to Devon's history. This hardly needs any explaining. A

:19:57. > :20:01.little bit of history repeating because 160 years ago, the same

:20:02. > :20:11.thing happened. If you are a Victorian historian, you know the

:20:12. > :20:19.1850s collapse. They didn't have their health and safety concerns we

:20:20. > :20:29.do. Everybody got out, walked around the train track and off they went.

:20:30. > :20:34.We have got wonderful images of that time but seldom is there anything

:20:35. > :20:39.new in history. If anyone knows anything about Devon's history, it

:20:40. > :20:46.is Doctor Gray. Since arriving from the States, he has written 45 books

:20:47. > :20:51.on the county. From fascism and early vegetarianism to the carvings

:20:52. > :20:55.on church benches, he has been inspired by Devon's diverse

:20:56. > :21:02.typography and its seam of documents and archives. You end up with a

:21:03. > :21:08.history which is so different from Somerset or Yorkshire or Berks and

:21:09. > :21:15.although I love Cornwall, Devon has a diversity which I think is

:21:16. > :21:22.extraordinary. It also helps that the past can still make its presence

:21:23. > :21:33.felt. The war memorial is a particular favourite. For figures

:21:34. > :21:39.standing on top of the Demon of war. It reminds me of how important that

:21:40. > :21:44.war was to people and at the time, they said this huge darkness fell

:21:45. > :21:48.across England and we want to leave something behind suit you know what

:21:49. > :21:54.we went through and you know it shouldn't happen again. He has given

:21:55. > :21:59.3000 lectures on history but now, he is making it by receiving an MBE for

:22:00. > :22:07.his voluntary services to Devon Heritage. There are probably 1000

:22:08. > :22:19.Devon historians. Everyone is working quietly away. This is nice,

:22:20. > :22:23.the Devon history is recognised. And now for a sad story with a happy

:22:24. > :22:27.ending. A litter of orphan puppies have been saved by a surrogate

:22:28. > :22:31.mother who lost her own litter just a week earlier. What makes this

:22:32. > :22:34.story so remarkable is that the surrogate mum is a Hungarian Vizla,

:22:35. > :22:47.just like the orphan puppies, and they live only 20 miles apart.

:22:48. > :22:54.The new mum for the pups and new pups for the ma'am. Clara had been

:22:55. > :23:01.expecting five puppies of her own but tragically, they all died. It

:23:02. > :23:11.was unable `` it was an awful experience to go through. We were

:23:12. > :23:22.relieved that we still had Clara, though. She has been searching the

:23:23. > :23:31.house. She was looking for the puppies. I had her upstairs in bed

:23:32. > :23:38.with me that night and she spent the entire night crying. A week later,

:23:39. > :23:44.and 20 miles away, another Sizzler was giving birth but the mother died

:23:45. > :23:49.and six of her ten pups also died. Did she have any milk for the

:23:50. > :23:57.survivors? Yes, she did. It was a perfect ending. It has been

:23:58. > :24:04.fantastic for Clara. It's like she has got her babies back. It has been

:24:05. > :24:09.fantastic for the puppies. We don't know whether they would have

:24:10. > :24:19.survived without her. It seems, in life, some things are just meant to

:24:20. > :24:20.be. They are gorgeous! My heart has

:24:21. > :24:42.melted. We lose all this mist and fog we

:24:43. > :24:48.have been getting used to over the last few days and we gain a bit more

:24:49. > :24:55.of a breeze and better visibility, both out at sea and inland. It is

:24:56. > :25:02.less misty, brighter and more of a breeze. That is not to say we might

:25:03. > :25:06.see a few mist patches overnight, but already, the cloud base is

:25:07. > :25:10.coming up in the main problem will be hill fog. There is still a big

:25:11. > :25:14.area of high pressure on our doorstep which doesn't move very far

:25:15. > :25:20.away from us. By the middle of the day tomorrow, it is pretty much in

:25:21. > :25:25.the same position. It will dominate the weather through this weekend. By

:25:26. > :25:30.the middle of the day on Sunday, hardly any change. We do have

:25:31. > :25:36.north`west winds which will feed in a fair amount of cloud but the dryer

:25:37. > :25:43.story continues through Saturday and Sunday. Already, some of the low

:25:44. > :25:49.cloud has lifted and clear spots, but very quickly, the cloud will

:25:50. > :25:53.fill in the gaps. Winds are north`westerly. They will be

:25:54. > :26:00.moderate overnight tonight. Overnight temperatures no lower than

:26:01. > :26:04.six or seven. For tomorrow, after a cloudy start, the sunshine will

:26:05. > :26:10.break through that cloud and particularly in the afternoon,

:26:11. > :26:14.lengthy spells of sunshine to enjoy. Along the north coast, low cloud

:26:15. > :26:20.still, so here not quite so fine, but for the rest of us, in that

:26:21. > :26:24.sunshine, it will feel pleasant with 14 or 15 Celsius the top

:26:25. > :26:31.temperature. On the coast, the sea temperatures will be nine degrees.

:26:32. > :26:48.For the Isles of Scilly, bright and dry but cloudy. Much better

:26:49. > :26:55.visibility in general. For our servers, bigger waves then we have

:26:56. > :27:09.seen. The sea has been all winter, really. Tomorrow, more for our

:27:10. > :27:19.servers. Still quite chilly. Better visibility. The sea state will be

:27:20. > :27:27.moderate. Still dry story next week. On Sunday, more cloud than we

:27:28. > :27:32.like. Brief lyrics `` breaks in that cloud. A big change from Wednesday

:27:33. > :27:36.onwards. It becomes more unsettled, so make the best of the next four

:27:37. > :27:42.days.
