:00:00. > :00:19.Good evening. Jersey's diving so-called

:00:20. > :00:27.community says it is in shock after community says it is in shock after

:00:28. > :00:38.an experienced diver died on Saturday. She was described as an

:00:39. > :00:41.acid to the island. `` asset. Friends describe Jillian Smith as

:00:42. > :00:44.born to be in the water. She'd been part of the island's diving

:00:45. > :00:47.community for years and was well respected for her experience and

:00:48. > :00:51.enthusiasm. Many people told the BBC today told of her passion for the

:00:52. > :00:54.sport. But not only did she love the water, she also cared for the

:00:55. > :00:57.environment. Kevin worked with her at Jersey Sea Search, a voluntary

:00:58. > :01:03.marine conservation group. I will remember her as a person who just

:01:04. > :01:07.loved to dive. She was so enthusiastic about getting in the

:01:08. > :01:11.water, always smiling when she came out of the water. She obviously

:01:12. > :01:14.loved it and I can understand why. The 41`year`old mother of one was

:01:15. > :01:17.diving here on Saturday afternoon with two others when she became

:01:18. > :01:20.separated from the group. She was quickly found in shallow water and

:01:21. > :01:23.brought to the surface where fellow divers tried to revive her. But

:01:24. > :01:27.despite best efforts, Jillian was pronounced dead at the scene by a

:01:28. > :01:31.passing doctor. Jersey Police isn't treating her death as suspicious,

:01:32. > :01:41.but has a duty to investigate what happened. Obviously, we need to look

:01:42. > :01:48.at the circumstances leading up to the dive itself and the equipment

:01:49. > :01:52.used. And the medical investigation. We are in the early

:01:53. > :01:55.stages of the investigation and maintaining an open mind. Tonight,

:01:56. > :01:59.members of the diving community here in the island say they are in shock,

:02:00. > :02:05.and are "clueless" as to how this could have happened to such an

:02:06. > :02:11.experienced diver. They say Jillian will be greatly missed ` the lovely

:02:12. > :02:16.person who always smiled. The demolition of the arrivals and

:02:17. > :02:23.baggage hall at Jersey Airport has been approved. Known as the 9077

:02:24. > :02:26.building, it is on the list of Sites of Special Interest, but Jersey

:02:27. > :02:28.Airport's management argued it affected both its safety and

:02:29. > :02:30.operational capability. Heritage campaigners had wanted to preserve

:02:31. > :02:32.the building. A woman appeared in Guernsey's

:02:33. > :02:36.Magistrates' Court today accused of stabbing her former partner with a

:02:37. > :02:38.knife. The incident happened at a property in Mill Street on Saturday

:02:39. > :02:41.Night. Sheena`Anne Rive faces charges of unlawfully wounding with

:02:42. > :02:44.intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The 32`year`old was remanded

:02:45. > :02:47.in custody for seven days. The final bill for repairing the sea

:02:48. > :02:51.walls from the winter storms could reach ?800,000. That's on top of the

:02:52. > :02:55.one million spent every year on routine maintenance of Jersey's sea

:02:56. > :02:58.defences. Meanwhile, officials from Transport and Technical Services say

:02:59. > :03:03.rising sea levels and more frequent storms may force them to raise the

:03:04. > :03:06.height of the sea walls. A scrutiny panel today heard the current walls

:03:07. > :03:11.are working well, but they're studying data to see if they need to

:03:12. > :03:14.be higher in the coming decades. Guernsey's failing to provide enough

:03:15. > :03:17.appropriate housing for Islanders. That's according to the Chief

:03:18. > :03:21.Officer of Housing. It follows the release of new figures showing that

:03:22. > :03:29.the number of new homes built last year falls well below government

:03:30. > :03:32.targets. Building new homes for the future,

:03:33. > :03:35.but the latest government figures show that not enough are being

:03:36. > :03:40.constructed. 171 new homes were built last year, when the target the

:03:41. > :03:44.States set is to create 300 a year. More than half of those new builds

:03:45. > :03:48.are classed as affordable housing. Most of the new builds were in St

:03:49. > :03:51.Peter Port and the north of the island. So where should future homes

:03:52. > :03:54.be built? Well, there are brown field sites that some feel should be

:03:55. > :04:03.turned over to housing, whilst others feel the rural parishes may

:04:04. > :04:07.have to shoulder more of the burden. We are eagerly waiting for the new

:04:08. > :04:13.plan, which will be coming out in the next 12 to 15 months. I am sure

:04:14. > :04:19.the planners will be addressing that. Certainly some of the parishes

:04:20. > :04:27.need to take the burden of new housing and I am hopeful that they

:04:28. > :04:30.will be in local centres, and they will be able to take some of the

:04:31. > :04:33.housing stock acquired on the island. Space is a premium in

:04:34. > :04:39.Guernsey and not all sites can easily be developed. We are waiting

:04:40. > :04:43.on the new development plan to allocate more land for housing

:04:44. > :04:48.development. At the moment, it is quite restricted, the number of

:04:49. > :04:51.sites that can be built on. We are looking for flexibility so that more

:04:52. > :04:55.homes can be provided. It's a fine line to tread ` build too few houses

:04:56. > :04:58.and people continue to struggle to buy a home, but build too many too

:04:59. > :05:04.quickly and the market could become flooded.

:05:05. > :05:07.The first outdoor Jersey royals were dug today. This first crop will go

:05:08. > :05:11.to local supermarkets. Royals planted later will be lifted in a

:05:12. > :05:14.few weeks to be exported to the lucrative UK market. And after one

:05:15. > :05:21.of the wettest winters in recent history, growers say they're

:05:22. > :05:26.confident of a good season. Really it was the beginning of February was

:05:27. > :05:29.particularly bad and that has impacted on the planting programme.

:05:30. > :05:35.But it has been very mild. This time last year we were in the depths of

:05:36. > :05:38.winter and there was still snow, so evidence is that it is growing well.

:05:39. > :05:41.I am feeling positive and upbeat. Bomb disposal experts were called in

:05:42. > :05:45.to carry out controlled explosions on mines found at Long Beach in

:05:46. > :05:48.Grouville Bay. The nine anti`tank Teller mines date from world war

:05:49. > :05:49.two. They were found by an Islander out metal`detecting with his

:05:50. > :06:05.friends. Normally you find one or two, but

:06:06. > :06:08.nine in one whole is quite a lot. It looks like they were ditched at the

:06:09. > :06:11.end of the liberation when they were clearing up. Maybe therefore got to

:06:12. > :06:19.pick them up. They have been sitting there for the last 70 odd years.

:06:20. > :06:27.BBC Radio Kent is the and BBC Radio Kent see our on air from six o'clock

:06:28. > :06:31.tomorrow morning to start your day. Now, the local weather.

:06:32. > :06:38.This week, it is much more on settled for the islands. There will

:06:39. > :06:43.be no problem with the mist and fog lingering. It is a cloudy start

:06:44. > :06:46.tomorrow morning and there is some brightness later on. More clout and

:06:47. > :06:53.more breeze developing for the weekend. Turning colder towards the

:06:54. > :06:56.weekend. At the moment the cloud is big enough for a light showers and

:06:57. > :07:01.temperatures not much below eight degrees. Tomorrow is a cloudy

:07:02. > :07:06.start. Into the afternoon we will get some spells of sunshine, 11 or

:07:07. > :07:13.12 the top temperature. A brisk westerly breeze feeling colder than

:07:14. > :07:18.most temperatures suggest. Fine on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday

:07:19. > :07:22.night, we see a change. Much more clout, some outbreaks of rain and by

:07:23. > :07:26.the time we get to Saturday and Sunday, it feels colder. In a second

:07:27. > :07:35.a full UK forecast. Good night. going to be Wednesday. Unsettled

:07:36. > :07:40.from there on in. More on that now with the UK forecast.

:07:41. > :07:44.A frost free night across the whole of the UK across the whole of the

:07:45. > :07:45.UK.
