:00:00. > :00:09.in a moment with analysis of that debate between Nick Clegg and Nigel

:00:10. > :00:14.Good evening. The head of Jersey Tourism says he's

:00:15. > :00:17.shocked at proposals to scrap his Government`run department and

:00:18. > :00:20.replace it with a privately`run body called Visit Jersey. The move was

:00:21. > :00:23.publicly announced to representatives of the hospitality

:00:24. > :00:34.industry last Friday ` only hours after tourism staff were told their

:00:35. > :00:37.department could close. I describe this new model as the

:00:38. > :00:40.catalyst for a fresh start. A fresh start, but at what cost?

:00:41. > :00:43.Members of Jersey's hospitality association listening to the

:00:44. > :00:47.proposal by the Tourism Shadow Board to scrap the Government's Tourism

:00:48. > :00:50.Department. The Board was appointed by the Economic Development Minister

:00:51. > :00:55.to investigate the industry after a decade of falling visitor numbers.

:00:56. > :00:58.But their proposed solution of replacing Jersey Tourism with a

:00:59. > :01:01.smaller independent body called Visit Jersey was difficult news for

:01:02. > :01:03.staff, as they were told less than 24 hours before the industry

:01:04. > :01:17.briefing. It could have been handled better.

:01:18. > :01:26.But, bad news is bad news however it is presented. Whilst it was

:01:27. > :01:28.uncomfortable, as it was a shock, we must now move forward.

:01:29. > :01:31.The Economic Development Department, which is responsible for Tourism,

:01:32. > :01:38.wasn't available for comment today. On Friday they said they will

:01:39. > :01:41.consider the interests of staff. The interests of staff will be

:01:42. > :01:44.considered and looked after as part of the process.

:01:45. > :01:49.The idea of out`sourcing tourism to the private sector isn't a new one.

:01:50. > :01:53.It's been considered for almost a decade ` but it's claimed the money

:01:54. > :01:59.it takes to promote our island as a holiday destination has proved too

:02:00. > :02:05.much for it to go ahead. Having to buy in services centrally

:02:06. > :02:12.is expensive, therefore there would have been less money for marketing.

:02:13. > :02:18.With that in mind, it makes sense to keep us where we were.

:02:19. > :02:22.But for how much longer? Staff at the Tourism Department now wait to

:02:23. > :02:25.hear what the future holds as the recommendations are considered.

:02:26. > :02:29.Until then, it's business as usual. Two female staff at La Moye prison

:02:30. > :02:31.in Jersey, who were being investigated over allegations of

:02:32. > :02:34.misconduct, have resigned. The prison's investigation into their

:02:35. > :02:37.actions has been suspended. No other details of the allegations have been

:02:38. > :02:40.revealed, but both staff were being investigated separately. The head of

:02:41. > :02:41.Jersey's prison, Bill Millar, says the reason for any individual

:02:42. > :02:49.resignations should be kept private. Deputy Allister Langlois has been

:02:50. > :02:53.appointed as Deputy Chief Minister of the States of Guernsey. He

:02:54. > :02:56.narrowly missed out on the role of Chief Minister in the election to

:02:57. > :03:12.that post two weeks ago. Peter Gillson has been elected unopposed

:03:13. > :03:16.as Guernsey's new Home Minister. There are calls for better hospital

:03:17. > :03:19.services for people with epilepsy in Jersey. The island doesn't have a

:03:20. > :03:22.specialist nurse. Around 500 people have the condition. Now the mother

:03:23. > :03:26.of one of them says she's frustrated by how long it takes for her

:03:27. > :03:28.daughter to see a specialist. The Health Department says provision in

:03:29. > :03:31.the island is good. I would like to see an epilepsy

:03:32. > :03:38.nurse reinstated here. That would benefit us. And then we could get a

:03:39. > :03:42.response quickly. We have the facilities here. We have

:03:43. > :03:48.approachable people who we can get hold of. We have good GPs as well.

:03:49. > :03:59.People should not be fearful about interacting with those services.

:04:00. > :04:04.Guernsey versus Jersey, one of the great sporting rivalries. But this

:04:05. > :04:08.summer a lot of those games could be cancelled due to a lack of flights

:04:09. > :04:10.and ferries. Cricket Boards in Jersey and Guernsey say they're

:04:11. > :04:14.facing problems getting their teams off the island to play each other.

:04:15. > :04:17.Spring is in the air and the ground's being prepared for a season

:04:18. > :04:20.of cricket. For the first time this year, the roller is out on the

:04:21. > :04:23.cricket square. A seasonal soon be under way. Matches being played here

:04:24. > :04:26.and in Jersey could be in jeopardy. Following changes to airlines and

:04:27. > :04:29.ferry schedules, some Channel Islands sports associations are

:04:30. > :04:33.struggling to fly or catch the ferry to take on their old rivals. The

:04:34. > :04:41.Guernsey Cricket Board says the new code share arrangement is reducing

:04:42. > :04:46.capacity for a number of flights. The scheduling now means that day

:04:47. > :04:52.trips across the weekend are not possible. There is not a day when

:04:53. > :05:00.you can get across. So, the flights are the only option. And with

:05:01. > :05:04.reduced capacity, it has loaded that onto the flights and they have

:05:05. > :05:08.reduced their capacity. As it is did this morning, we had no option in

:05:09. > :05:11.terms of playing those games and had to cancel them.

:05:12. > :05:14.It's a frustrating time for clubs in Jersey as well. Especially when

:05:15. > :05:19.States money is sometimes on offer to help players get off`island for

:05:20. > :05:23.games. The States have been very good this year because they have

:05:24. > :05:30.given us so much more money with regards to travel. It is OK having

:05:31. > :05:35.the ability to travel but you have two be able to do it.

:05:36. > :05:38.The Channel Islands have a long and strong tradition of inter`island

:05:39. > :05:48.sporting rivalry. But many clubs are hoping they can ride out the

:05:49. > :05:51.problems and get their games on. In a statement tonight, Blue Islands

:05:52. > :05:54.said that they hadn't heard from Guernsey Cricket board until today,

:05:55. > :05:57.but they have now reached a solution and travel plans have been

:05:58. > :06:00.accommodated. They say they're always putting on extra flights to

:06:01. > :06:03.accommodate and they encourage groups to contact the airline in

:06:04. > :06:04.advance in order that they can continue to meet our islands' sports

:06:05. > :06:14.teams' needs. Just before we go to the weather, a

:06:15. > :06:17.look ahead to tomorrow. It is School Report Day here on BBC News, when

:06:18. > :06:20.classrooms turn into newsrooms. We will have a special report from the

:06:21. > :06:24.students of St Anne's school in Alderney and coverage throughout the

:06:25. > :06:27.day too on BBC Radio Guernsey BBC Radio Jersey.

:06:28. > :06:31.That's all from us ` I'll leave you with the weather.

:06:32. > :06:46.Hello. We have some showers to content with. Some could be heavy,

:06:47. > :07:00.with the risk of hail and thunder. Initially, some dry weather. So

:07:01. > :07:04.these twins. `` Southeast winds. Some sunshine in the morning but

:07:05. > :07:17.quickly a Clydebank approaches from the South. `` a bank of cloud

:07:18. > :07:22.approaches from the South. It gets better and warmer into the weekend.

:07:23. > :07:26.More showers to come on Friday. Some quite heavy. Then milder and dry by

:07:27. > :07:35.the time we get to Sunday. blowing. On the outlook, it is

:07:36. > :07:41.warming up towards the weekend. Here's Nick Miller with more.

:07:42. > :07:46.Some of the many faces of spring weather showed themselves today. Sun

:07:47. > :07:52.in Scotland, snow in the showers that moved in across England. Hail

:07:53. > :07:56.as well. Adrian took this picture from Essex and the chilly feel stays

:07:57. > :08:01.with us for the rest of the week along with further showers. If you

:08:02. > :08:04.don't like this, wait for this! Temperatures heading up at the

:08:05. > :08:05.weekend. To achieve that, we
