:00:08. > :00:14.Good evening, and welcome to Monday's BBC Channel Islands news.
:00:15. > :00:17.After thousands of pounds was spent upgrading it, one of Guernsey's main
:00:18. > :00:26.community facilities is attacked by vandals. I believe it's a cry for
:00:27. > :00:30.help in some way. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind
:00:31. > :00:33.of stupidity. Also, the future of Jersey's
:00:34. > :00:35.Heritage Trust looks more stable after drastic job cuts and support
:00:36. > :00:39.from islanders. And after 100 incidents of Jersey's
:00:40. > :00:40.water being polluted last year, the surfers, sailors and swimmers taking
:00:41. > :00:58.on the fight to keep our seas clean. There could soon be CCTV cameras
:00:59. > :01:03.installed at Guernsey's new skate park after graffiti was daubed all
:01:04. > :01:07.over it at the weekend. The facility in St peter Port only opened last
:01:08. > :01:11.year, after years of campaigning and fund`raising by young people. The
:01:12. > :01:15.island's Culture and Leisure Minister, who oversaw the project,
:01:16. > :01:21.says he's furious at this attack. And as Mike Wilkins reports, it's
:01:22. > :01:24.not just case of scrubbing it off. Guernsey's new skate park, not even
:01:25. > :01:29.a year old, and already out of action. And this is the cause `
:01:30. > :01:40.graffiti sprawled all across the polished surface. It could take
:01:41. > :01:46.three days to remove it. It will take a long time to clean it up.
:01:47. > :01:48.They can't paint over it or use high`pressure water washer is
:01:49. > :01:52.because they need to maintain the surface. This has taken workers for
:01:53. > :01:56.hours and they still have not managed to shift it. The authorities
:01:57. > :01:59.are being forced to buy a special substance which, it's hoped, will be
:02:00. > :02:02.more successful at removing the paint. And it's not just the skate
:02:03. > :02:06.park that has been targeted. These photos show other areas of St Peter
:02:07. > :02:08.Port that have been attacked. The island's Culture and Leisure
:02:09. > :02:17.Minister says he won't tolerate such behaviour. I believe it's a cry for
:02:18. > :02:20.help in some way. I'm not quite sure but there is absolutely no excuse
:02:21. > :02:25.for this kind of stupidity and we are, they are just two bit people
:02:26. > :02:31.who do this. I have no time at all for this kind of behaviour, at all,
:02:32. > :02:35.and I think I share that with many people on this island. We don't want
:02:36. > :02:38.this kind of thing to happen. Guernsey Police are analysing CCTV
:02:39. > :02:41.footage images from the nearby Beau Sejour Leisure Centre. And the skate
:02:42. > :02:47.park is now considering getting cameras itself to prevent further
:02:48. > :02:50.attacks. A UK travel company that specialises
:02:51. > :02:53.in bringing holiday makers to the Channel Islands has bought Preston
:02:54. > :02:56.Travel, which collapsed last month. 3X Travel, based in Surrey, has
:02:57. > :02:59.bought the company and plans to re`launch as Preston Holidays.
:03:00. > :03:03.Preston Travel had been bringing around 20,000 visitors a year to
:03:04. > :03:07.Jersey. That's about 8% of the total number. 3X Travel, which specialises
:03:08. > :03:11.in short breaks, family and group holidays to the Channel Islands, has
:03:12. > :03:21.bought its entire assets, as well as its customer base.
:03:22. > :03:24.EasyJet bosses say they haven't ruled out further expansion in the
:03:25. > :03:26.Channel Islands, as the airline launched its Jersey to London
:03:27. > :03:30.Gatwick route this weekend. Here's the first aeroplane touching down to
:03:31. > :03:33.a water cannon welcome on Sunday morning. The low`cost carrier takes
:03:34. > :03:36.over the Gatwick route from Flybe, which stopped flying between
:03:37. > :03:38.Guernsey and Jersey to London due to rising costs. EasyJet says current
:03:39. > :03:44.conditions at Guernsey Airport prevent it from taking over the
:03:45. > :03:47.service there. We looked closely at Guernsey and it presented an
:03:48. > :03:52.attractive opportunity to us. Our problem is that the runway length
:03:53. > :03:55.resented some operational restrictions so for the moment it is
:03:56. > :04:01.not something we are able to consider, sadly, but we will see
:04:02. > :04:04.what happens in the future. More than 100 employees at the
:04:05. > :04:06.telecoms company Sure are facing major changes to their pension
:04:07. > :04:10.scheme. That's around half the workforce ` those employed when it
:04:11. > :04:13.was still run by the States as Guernsey Telecoms. Sure says the
:04:14. > :04:16.final salary scheme they signed up to is no longer sustainable, and
:04:17. > :04:20.plans to close it. Staff will still get the pension they accrued to
:04:21. > :04:25.date, but will be asked to join a new scheme moving forward. The
:04:26. > :04:29.defined enough scheme which is a salary `based scheme when you retire
:04:30. > :04:35.is clearly not sustainable and we have to find solutions to address
:04:36. > :04:40.that in a way that the pensioners and members are going to be, the
:04:41. > :04:43.value will reflect what they put into date.
:04:44. > :04:46.Financial support from islanders has secured the future of Jersey
:04:47. > :04:49.Heritage, which looks after sites including Elizabeth Castle, La
:04:50. > :04:52.Hougue Bie and the Maritime Museum. The organisation faced a funding
:04:53. > :04:55.crisis a few years ago, and was forced to cut jobs and reduce
:04:56. > :04:58.opening times. Since then it's completed a three`year deal with the
:04:59. > :05:01.States, where both parties match funding 50/50. Emma Chambers has
:05:02. > :05:06.been speaking to Heritage bosses about the future, ahead of the start
:05:07. > :05:08.of this year's summer season. The future looked bleak for Jersey's
:05:09. > :05:12.biggest tourist attractions when the group in charge of them suffered a
:05:13. > :05:18.severe funding crisis, which left it ?1 million a year short. Fast
:05:19. > :05:21.forward four years, and now the future is looking a lot brighter.
:05:22. > :05:24.Even though the castles and museums still have reduced opening hours,
:05:25. > :05:29.the number of people visiting them has increased by 13%. That's because
:05:30. > :05:32.the three`year agreement Jersey Heritage made with the Government to
:05:33. > :05:42.match public funding with self`generated income is providing
:05:43. > :05:46.stability. There has been some reduction in the level of service we
:05:47. > :05:50.are providing which in the future we will look to add a rest back up, but
:05:51. > :05:56.that change has produced a great deal of money and investment from
:05:57. > :06:01.the states which has allowed us to deliver more change on the sites,
:06:02. > :06:05.which was a long time coming. That in turn has delivered more use from
:06:06. > :06:08.tourists and locals. Over the last five years, the membership scheme
:06:09. > :06:11.has had the biggest boost, from 2000 to 9000. It's this support from
:06:12. > :06:14.locals that's enabled a number of investments in the service for this
:06:15. > :06:22.year, including a move into digital technology. We have created a
:06:23. > :06:29.virtual pocket museum and it is a 3`D up, actually an augmented
:06:30. > :06:35.reality app, which means we can upload parts of the collection in
:06:36. > :06:38.3`D files. From Celtic coins to an ongoing ice age project, Jersey's
:06:39. > :06:41.sites already span vast swathes of history. But the organisation is
:06:42. > :06:48.looking to the future, and a funding model based on much firmer ground.
:06:49. > :06:51.Three people have put themselves forward as candidates in an Alderney
:06:52. > :06:54.States by`election. It follows the death of States member Paul Arditti
:06:55. > :06:57.earlier this year. The three facing the public vote are Tony Barnes, Lin
:06:58. > :07:02.Maurice and Norma Paris. Voting takes place on Saturday the 12th of
:07:03. > :07:05.April. A Sark hotelier says bookings this
:07:06. > :07:09.spring are 71% up on the same period in 2013, and that's mainly due to
:07:10. > :07:12.the BBC series An Island Parish. Half of those who've booked at
:07:13. > :07:16.Stocks for a summer holiday this year told staff they're fans of the
:07:17. > :07:19.series. Sark Tourism says website hits increased a thousandfold in the
:07:20. > :07:25.24 hours after each show in the six`part series was aired.
:07:26. > :07:30.You're watching the BBC in the Channel Islands. Good to have you
:07:31. > :07:32.with us. Later in Spotlight with Justin and Natalie, the young
:07:33. > :07:43.engineers who built this radio`controlled four`by`four to win
:07:44. > :07:46.a national competition. Stay tuned for that, and a forecast
:07:47. > :07:50.in a few moments. Surfers, sailors and swimmers have been braving dirty
:07:51. > :07:52.waters in Jersey today as part of a new environmental campaign. Blue
:07:53. > :07:55.Fish is aimed at highlighting the risks of polluting island waters
:07:56. > :07:57.after more than 100 incidents were reported last year. Jen Smith
:07:58. > :08:10.reports Luckily, these were the worst. Luckily, not
:08:11. > :08:12.things you regularly find in Jersey's waters. And that's the
:08:13. > :08:15.point. Jersey's Environment Department hopes this unattractive
:08:16. > :08:19.lot will make you think about what you throw down the drain. People
:08:20. > :08:24.disposing, washing out their paint pots and you will suddenly get a
:08:25. > :08:28.blue or white coloured stream so that has an impact on water life. It
:08:29. > :08:35.also has an impact on our drinking water, so Jersey Water take the
:08:36. > :08:38.water, the rain that falls on the island to provide clean drinking
:08:39. > :08:41.water and we want to ensure it is protected. More than 100 incidents
:08:42. > :08:44.of water pollution were reported to Jersey's Environment Department last
:08:45. > :08:49.year. Surfers like Arlene Maltman say raising awareness is the best
:08:50. > :08:56.way to stop it getting worse. We don't want to end up like France,
:08:57. > :09:00.for example, where after a storm, the beaches can be closed and it
:09:01. > :09:05.becomes dangerous for swimming or surfing, you can catch things like
:09:06. > :09:08.hepatitis. The campaign's about keeping our island waters clean and
:09:09. > :09:11.ensuring we don't pollute what comes out of the tap. Howard Snowden from
:09:12. > :09:18.Jersey Water says with so many people on a small island, this is a
:09:19. > :09:24.challenge. It can, because we are living within catchment areas. They
:09:25. > :09:29.have bigger reservoir systems in the British Isles and are scarcely
:09:30. > :09:33.populated, things like the Pennines and Yorkshire moons. Jersey, we are
:09:34. > :09:36.pretty much inhabited across the island. So while Jersey's waters
:09:37. > :09:41.might not look like this, the message is, keep it clean if we want
:09:42. > :09:49.to keep it that way. Whether time now. A lovely day yesterday. It was
:09:50. > :09:56.some of the highest temperatures we have seen so far this year. 16, 17
:09:57. > :10:00.degrees. The thunderstorms in the last couple of hours have brought
:10:01. > :10:04.temperatures down but we are mostly an evening feature and will move out
:10:05. > :10:08.of the way later tonight and then we have a misty start to tomorrow. Then
:10:09. > :10:13.some sunny spells and feeling warm in the sunshine again. On the face
:10:14. > :10:19.of it, there is quite a lot going on. Lumps of cloud all around us,
:10:20. > :10:22.one moving through the Cherbourg peninsula at the moment is a line of
:10:23. > :10:27.showers and could come close to us in the next few hours. After that,
:10:28. > :10:33.the shower activity drives down. There is low pressure to the west of
:10:34. > :10:38.over Germany and Poland and that over Germany and Poland and that
:10:39. > :10:43.doesn't change much this week with low pressure moving up to the west
:10:44. > :10:49.of us and a threat of showers. These showers are quite lively. Don't be
:10:50. > :10:53.surprised if we don't get another rumble of thunder or lightning for a
:10:54. > :10:56.short while tonight, but then later the mist and fog will turn up, some
:10:57. > :11:03.of the fog quite thick tomorrow morning. Tomorrow a misty start,
:11:04. > :11:07.some of that in low cloud and mist reluctant to move out of the way but
:11:08. > :11:12.it will improve and by the end of the afternoon, the sunshine will be
:11:13. > :11:16.back out and it will feel warm. For coastal waters, it is mainly an East
:11:17. > :11:24.or south easterly force for misty and then becoming mainly fair. The
:11:25. > :11:30.times of high water, at St Helier it is 8:23am. Not much waste for
:11:31. > :11:35.surfers and quite clean. A warm day on Wednesday that there will always
:11:36. > :11:40.be a threat of showers in the next few days, but generally we will get
:11:41. > :11:46.away with it, quite an increasing risk of showers towards the weekend.
:11:47. > :11:52.Thank you, David. That it for now. I am back with the headlines at 8pm
:11:53. > :11:59.and again with the news at 10pm. From us, by for now.
:12:00. > :12:00.who built this winning car. And preparing for passengers again, the
:12:01. > :12:04.volunteers giving Dawlish station a make over.
:12:05. > :12:07.Drug and alcohol addicts are being encouraged to try abstaining instead
:12:08. > :12:11.of relying on substitutes such as methadone. The ?15 million project
:12:12. > :12:16.is being run by charities in Devon. Jenny Kumah has the details.
:12:17. > :12:18.What's new about this service in Devon is that it deals with both
:12:19. > :12:21.drug and drink problems. Before, drug and drink problems. Before,
:12:22. > :12:25.these issues were dealt with by two separate organisations. Former drug
:12:26. > :12:30.users and alcoholics have helped to shape the service so it can better
:12:31. > :12:33.meet people's needs. I've been speaking to one of the people
:12:34. > :12:38.involved in this project. He had been a heroin and methadone user for
:12:39. > :12:42.28 years. My brother gave me a definition. He said, "It's like when
:12:43. > :12:47.you started taking drugs, you shut down. And for 20 years, you were
:12:48. > :12:50.shut down and you just woke up again." And that is exactly what
:12:51. > :12:54.it's like. It's like I'm reborn, in a way. Seymour chose to come off the
:12:55. > :12:57.heroin substitute methadone but he says that many addicts have been
:12:58. > :13:00.left to linger on this prescribed medication for too long without
:13:01. > :13:06.enough help to come off drugs completely. And that's what this new
:13:07. > :13:10.service hopes to sort out. There will be a big emphasis on
:13:11. > :13:15.abstinence. There will be a great emphasis in the new service... That
:13:16. > :13:21.will continue to provide substitute medication for people... But as part
:13:22. > :13:24.of a plan. And part of that plan will be that it will be on a
:13:25. > :13:30.reducing basis over a period of time, dependent on their needs.
:13:31. > :13:33.Addiction is a growing problem. Around 15,000 people are dependent
:13:34. > :13:41.on drugs and around 26,000 have a drink problem. This is predicted to
:13:42. > :13:44.rise by 4% by 2030. The authorities also say the nature of addiction is
:13:45. > :13:47.changing, with dependency on over`the`counter prescription drugs
:13:48. > :13:57.rising as well as the number of professional women drinking harmful
:13:58. > :13:59.amounts of alcohol. Jenny there.
:14:00. > :14:03.As Justin mentioned, the new cricket season is just around the corner and
:14:04. > :14:06.today, Dave Gibbins has been to Somerset County Cricket Club. Here
:14:07. > :14:09.he is with their plans for this year and the highlights from the
:14:10. > :14:12.weekend's football and rugby action. This report contains some flash
:14:13. > :14:16.photography. Well, the cricket season starts in earnest in a couple
:14:17. > :14:19.of weeks' time for Somerset and this is part of their pre`season
:14:20. > :14:20.reparation, showing off their Championship attire in front of the
:14:21. > :14:26.press followed shortly by their press followed shortly by their
:14:27. > :14:28.Twenty20 kit. More about that in a moment. But first, the rest of the
:14:29. > :14:31.sport. Yeovil Town has slipped, I am
:14:32. > :14:32.afraid, to the bottom of football's Championship again.
:14:33. > :14:35.afraid, to the bottom of football's It was imperative that they got the
:14:36. > :14:41.better of relegation rivals Barnsley at the weekend. But they crashed to
:14:42. > :14:45.a 4`1 defeat. A mistake by Byron Webster late in the first, which was
:14:46. > :14:47.doubled by a tasty finish to leave them floundering in a game they
:14:48. > :14:51.could not afford to lose. This could not afford to lose. This
:14:52. > :14:54.player instilled some life into Town but that was quickly undone as
:14:55. > :15:01.Barnsley grabbed another two goals to end the contest.
:15:02. > :15:04.After two wins last week, Exeter City are back to square one
:15:05. > :15:07.following a one goal loss to Accrington Stanley.
:15:08. > :15:11.While Torquay United's life as a league club is nearing its end. City
:15:12. > :15:16.goalkeeper was left wanting from a corner kick, as Accrington scored
:15:17. > :15:19.the only goal. Despite the result, Exeter are still seven points away
:15:20. > :15:23.from danger. Torquay have only six games left to
:15:24. > :15:25.preserve their league status and a 1`0 setback, this time play`off
:15:26. > :15:32.content to Southend, leaves them seven points away from the clear.
:15:33. > :15:36.Exeter Chiefs's hopes of finishing in the top six of this year's Rugby
:15:37. > :15:38.Premiership and a place in the revamped European Cup are almost
:15:39. > :15:41.over. Meanwhile, the Cornish Pirates have
:15:42. > :15:48.needed ten straight wins in the league over south`west rivals
:15:49. > :15:51.Plymouth Albion. Here's Ben. `` Brent.
:15:52. > :15:54.Since Plymouth Albion last beat the Cornish Pirates in the league, there
:15:55. > :15:57.has been two Winter Olympics, a change of government and a Royal
:15:58. > :16:01.Wedding. And their wait to beat their Cornish neighbours is going to
:16:02. > :16:04.go into its fifth full year after Saturday's close loss. After Albion
:16:05. > :16:12.had taken an early lead with tries putting the visitors in front. ``
:16:13. > :16:16.lead, tries put the visitors in front. Iain Grace got Albion close
:16:17. > :16:22.before this late try from Tom Kettle sealed the win against his old club.
:16:23. > :16:26.We've come up here today, there is a great crowd. We really enjoyed being
:16:27. > :16:30.in front of it and I feel like it had a bit of a derby game feel, as
:16:31. > :16:33.well. It was coming and going, coming and going but thankfully we
:16:34. > :16:37.got the result. A bit frustrating. We crossed the line twice, got the
:16:38. > :16:40.ball rolling, put it down twice and the referee failed to see that
:16:41. > :16:43.twice, which frustrates me as well. That's potentially 10`14 points but
:16:44. > :16:47.somehow the officials have missed it but everyone else has seen it. So
:16:48. > :16:52.I'm not happy with that either but we made two mistakes. `` too many
:16:53. > :16:56.mistakes. Meanwhile, Exeter's hopes of a top six Premiership finish are
:16:57. > :17:00.all but over after losing 14`13 to Gloucester. This late try set up a
:17:01. > :17:05.kick to win it for Gary Steenson but it drifted just wide to leave the
:17:06. > :17:09.Chiefs in ninth place. Well, the press conference has just
:17:10. > :17:14.finished in the Long Room and we are on the balcony of that same
:17:15. > :17:19.building. Joining us is the county captain of Somerset. You've got two
:17:20. > :17:22.new coaches, David Hutton and also Jason Kerr, a familiar face to
:17:23. > :17:26.everybody at the County ground. What do you think they can add to the
:17:27. > :17:30.team? It has been quite an easy progression. Jason has been involved
:17:31. > :17:34.and been here for a long period of time. So that has been a natural
:17:35. > :17:37.progression in a way. The bowlers have been working with him closely
:17:38. > :17:41.during winter times. And then Dave has been a great asset for us. As
:17:42. > :17:46.soon as he became available after his time at Derby, it was a natural
:17:47. > :17:47.progression. We wanted somebody of his calibre, international
:17:48. > :17:50.experience, coaching experience around the world, and the fantastic
:17:51. > :17:55.batting coach that goes alongside that. Now, there has been a lot of
:17:56. > :18:00.speculation and talk a good positive talk, about the twins Jamie and
:18:01. > :18:03.Craig, from North Devon. Has that talk been premature of them perhaps
:18:04. > :18:06.earning their first England test caps question marks become a look, I
:18:07. > :18:13.think it is not in thoroughly premature. `` test caps? Look, I
:18:14. > :18:17.think it is not necessarily premature. All this with the England
:18:18. > :18:21.team have had a tough winter. It is natural people are going to start
:18:22. > :18:24.looking to the next group of players and the next use players on. They
:18:25. > :18:28.have every chance. There are good cricketers and I am sure somewhere
:18:29. > :18:31.along the line, whether this is in order season after, that both of
:18:32. > :18:34.them will match up and be good enough to make the next step. ``
:18:35. > :18:37.this season or the season after that. We wish the very best of
:18:38. > :18:40.luck. Their first County Championship game is at Taunton
:18:41. > :18:46.against Yorkshire, on Sunday April 13.
:18:47. > :18:51.Lovely, you know summer is on its way when Dave has his pink,
:18:52. > :18:54.short`sleeved shirt on. Is that the sign?
:18:55. > :18:57.Well, the clock did go forward. A group of budding engineers from a
:18:58. > :19:00.school in Devon who built a radio controlled 4x4 car has just won a
:19:01. > :19:03.national competition. The pupils from Clyst Vale Community College
:19:04. > :19:08.pitted their vehicle against 26 other teams and overcame them and
:19:09. > :19:18.some rather large obstacles. John Danks has the story.
:19:19. > :19:24.This radio controlled car can tackle almost any awkward surface. What
:19:25. > :19:29.might surprise you is that it was designed and built by these guys. It
:19:30. > :19:35.has two wheel steering and 4`wheel steering, that you can turn off
:19:36. > :19:40.remotely using the transmitter. That is the electronic side of things. We
:19:41. > :19:44.also have a carbon fibre body shell and also carbon fibre chassis. The
:19:45. > :19:50.car was built for an engineering challenge is run by Land Rover. The
:19:51. > :19:52.year nine pupils travelled up to the company's divine quarters in
:19:53. > :19:57.Warwickshire to take part in the national final. They were
:19:58. > :20:01.interviewed by expert engineers from across the engineering sectors,
:20:02. > :20:06.aerospace, money factoring, production. The level of answers
:20:07. > :20:10.they were given to their judges were phenomenal. The level of intensity
:20:11. > :20:16.that they were scrutinised and was massive. They not only had to handle
:20:17. > :20:21.the pressure but there were a few surprises. Especially on the course.
:20:22. > :20:27.We were not expecting it to be over a car. They were going inside and
:20:28. > :20:32.outside and on top of a car. After overcoming all of the obstacles, and
:20:33. > :20:37.competitions from 26th other teams, it was a man who claimed the trophy
:20:38. > :20:41.and the ?1000 rise. There were so many teams that I did not think
:20:42. > :20:45.there was much chance of winning and I am still wheezed that we actually
:20:46. > :20:50.won the whole competition. `` amazed. While success things and,
:20:51. > :20:56.they are already planning to engineer and other when next year.
:20:57. > :20:59.`` another win. We never did things like that while
:21:00. > :21:03.I was at school! I wish we had. Now as we heard earlier, Network
:21:04. > :21:05.Rail has confirmed that the rail line through Dawlish will open as
:21:06. > :21:09.planned on Friday. Work is now underway to get the
:21:10. > :21:12.station, which has also been closed, ready ahead of the big day. And a
:21:13. > :21:15.group of green`fingered local volunteers has been giving it a make
:21:16. > :21:21.over. Spotlight's Chloe Axford joined them this weekend.
:21:22. > :21:25.People here in Dawlish describe the town's train station as their
:21:26. > :21:28.lifeblood. That is why they want it to look as good as possible when the
:21:29. > :21:34.Spotlight is on it when it reopens later this week. I want these just
:21:35. > :21:39.to go over the edge. They need to be a bit higher. Local gardener and
:21:40. > :21:45.broadcaster Toby Butland is leading a team of volunteers, giving the
:21:46. > :21:47.platform is a floral make over. I grew up in Dawlish, live here in
:21:48. > :21:51.Dawlish, live your now and am very proud of that. It is just shocking
:21:52. > :21:55.to see it go down at heel and almost washed away on the seafront. It is
:21:56. > :21:59.important to me to bring it back. This is one thing that can make a
:22:00. > :22:04.please look like it is back on its feet, open for business. It is plant
:22:05. > :22:07.and colour. As well as a planting project, work is underway to spruce
:22:08. > :22:11.the station up ahead of its reopening. There are new canopies
:22:12. > :22:17.and the whole station has been newly painted. It is a very heavily used
:22:18. > :22:22.station. Even though it is, you know, just a seaside town. A lot of
:22:23. > :22:25.people commute, both southerly and northerly. The last two months have
:22:26. > :22:31.been quiet from attic to the town, with the evacuation that took place.
:22:32. > :22:36.`` quite traumatic. Let's get Dawlish going again. Network Rail
:22:37. > :22:39.has confirmed that the mainline through Dawlish will reopen on
:22:40. > :22:43.Friday, following weeks of round`the`clock work to repair it.
:22:44. > :22:50.It says work is progressing well, although there are still some
:22:51. > :22:53.challenges ahead. It is looking good. I am looking
:22:54. > :22:57.forward to seeing their handiwork on Friday because Spotlight will be
:22:58. > :22:58.coming live run Dawlish station. We will also hopefully be on one of the
:22:59. > :23:11.first passionate dreams. Passenger trains. You're also going
:23:12. > :23:13.engineering project that has been engineering project that has been
:23:14. > :23:15.going on has been taking place. We'll go behind the scenes there as
:23:16. > :23:19.well. That is coming up on Friday at well. That is coming up on Friday at
:23:20. > :23:22.six 30p. You're going to see those lovely
:23:23. > :23:25.views out of the train window. Let's have a look at the weather.
:23:26. > :23:29.views out of the train window. Let's The papers happens in that it is
:23:30. > :23:30.Mediterranean heard this week. Is Mediterranean heard this week. Is
:23:31. > :23:37.that right? No. Do not believe everything you
:23:38. > :23:45.read in the newspapers. We did have a warm day yesterday but I think
:23:46. > :23:45.14 degrees 15 degrees at best, and 14 degrees 15 degrees at best,
:23:46. > :23:46.that is nothing like the that is nothing like the
:23:47. > :23:51.temperatures in the Mediterranean. Not really true! Good evening. We
:23:52. > :23:54.have had some warmth and some sunshine through the weekend. It has
:23:55. > :23:57.been a very pleasant weekend. The highest temperatures have been
:23:58. > :24:01.across parts of Somerset but I will come to those in just a second.
:24:02. > :24:06.First, the forecast for this week. It is mild but I would not go
:24:07. > :24:10.overboard and call it warm. There is some rain in the forecast, mainly in
:24:11. > :24:14.the form of showers. We continue with the risk of those showers
:24:15. > :24:15.pretty much every day of this week. Hopefully some fine weather in
:24:16. > :24:19.between those showers. We certainly between those showers. We certainly
:24:20. > :24:23.The top temperatures was 18 degrees. The top temperatures was 18 degrees.
:24:24. > :24:30.so far from south`west England. Many so far from south`west England. Many
:24:31. > :24:37.other locations for 16 or 17. Lots of cloud. Areas of low pressure,
:24:38. > :24:37.be a feature of the week ahead. be a feature of the week
:24:38. > :24:38.Every now and again, we will get a Every now and again, we will get a
:24:39. > :24:43.strand of cloud thrown up by that area of low pressure, bringing the
:24:44. > :24:46.line of showers. We have one of the moment. That will move out of the
:24:47. > :24:49.way overnight tonight and before the next one arrives, coming through the
:24:50. > :24:53.English Channel in the afternoon tomorrow, there should be a lot of
:24:54. > :24:56.dry weather around. There is much in the way of wind, meaning it will
:24:57. > :25:01.turn a misty and even for the first thing tomorrow morning. Either time
:25:02. > :25:07.we get to the middle of the week, a weather system off the Atlantic will
:25:08. > :25:11.bring us some more persistent rain. A lot is happening. The next 24
:25:12. > :25:15.hours or so, I think there will be a lot of dry weather. The showers that
:25:16. > :25:20.we have now are quite lively. We have given some fairly torrential
:25:21. > :25:22.downpours are, even your flash of light. The whole lot is moving
:25:23. > :25:26.northwards and later on tonight, it becomes dry and then misty and then
:25:27. > :25:29.foggy by tomorrow morning. In fact, some of the fault could be quite
:25:30. > :25:35.thick for those travelling early in the day. Visibility is between 50
:25:36. > :25:41.and 100 metres. That really could cause some travel worries early in
:25:42. > :25:43.the day. Later tonight, it will be forming and around early tomorrow
:25:44. > :25:46.morning. Stay tuned to a local radio for
:25:47. > :25:52.updates on that. Overnight temperatures... For most of us, it
:25:53. > :25:55.will be a fine day tomorrow after that fog has gone. There is that
:25:56. > :25:59.next line of showers coming up from the south. Late in the day, coming
:26:00. > :26:03.into parts of Cornwall and so they can. Although there are a few
:26:04. > :26:07.showers dotted around and it is just a line of cloud, rather than any in
:26:08. > :26:11.Thames River Pageant winds are also coming around. They're becoming a
:26:12. > :26:14.bit more easterly on the strongest will be across West Cornwall and the
:26:15. > :26:20.Isles of Scilly. Temperatures getting up to 15, maybe 16 degrees.
:26:21. > :26:24.17 is possible across northern parts of Somerset but not quite as warm as
:26:25. > :26:28.yesterday. On to the forecast for the Isles of Scilly. Here, I think,
:26:29. > :26:30.mainly dry with cloudy skies. Breezy day with the threat of a few light
:26:31. > :26:45.showers. Those times are now of course in
:26:46. > :26:48.British summertime. For our suffers, the south coast is likely to have
:26:49. > :26:54.some of the biggest waves but not very clean. The strongest winds will
:26:55. > :27:00.be in the far west. There is a coastal waters forecast. Mainly fair
:27:01. > :27:05.but with the risk of showers later in the day. Also the possibility of
:27:06. > :27:10.some sea fog patches around line Bay and Corby. They could be slow to
:27:11. > :27:14.move out of the way. That is the forecast for the rest of this week.
:27:15. > :27:17.`` and sea fog patches around the coast. There will be some longer
:27:18. > :27:21.spells of rain possibly but hopefully a bit of sunshine in
:27:22. > :27:23.between. Have a good evening. Not quite Mediterranean. Thank you,
:27:24. > :27:25.David. BBC Radio Cornwall is broadcasting a
:27:26. > :27:29.special programme from Brussels tomorrow. James Churchfield and
:27:30. > :27:31.Debbie McRory will be live at the EU Parliament building, asking what
:27:32. > :27:38.Europe has done for Cornwall. That's live from 6am tomorrow morning.
:27:39. > :27:43.Parliament Sounds good. We are back at 6:30pm
:27:44. > :27:44.tomorrow. Have a lovely evening. Thank you for watching.
:27:45. > :27:46.Good night.
