:00:00. > :00:13.first look at the papers on the BBC News channel. Now on

:00:14. > :00:17.Good evening. Thank you for joining us. There could soon be CCTV cameras

:00:18. > :00:21.installed at Guernsey's new skate park, after graffiti was daubed all

:00:22. > :00:24.over it at the weekend. The facility in St Peter Port only opened last

:00:25. > :00:27.year, after years of campaigning and fund`raising by young people. The

:00:28. > :00:30.island's Culture and Leisure Minister, who oversaw the project,

:00:31. > :00:35.says he's furious at this attack. And as Mike Wilkins reports, it's

:00:36. > :00:38.not just case of scrubbing it off. Guernsey's new skate park, not even

:00:39. > :00:43.a year old, and already out of action. And this is the cause `

:00:44. > :00:54.graffiti sprawled all across the polished surface. It could take

:00:55. > :00:58.three days to remove it. And it's going to take a long time to clean

:00:59. > :01:01.it all off. They can't paint over it or use high`pressure water washers

:01:02. > :01:04.because they need to maintain the surface. This has taken council

:01:05. > :01:07.workers four hours and they still haven't managed to shift it. The

:01:08. > :01:10.authorities are being forced to buy a special substance which, it's

:01:11. > :01:14.hoped, will be more successful at removing the paint. And it's not

:01:15. > :01:17.just the skate park that has been targeted. These photos show other

:01:18. > :01:20.areas of St Peter Port that have been attacked. The island's Culture

:01:21. > :01:27.and Leisure Minister says he won't tolerate such behaviour. I believe

:01:28. > :01:30.it's a cry for help in some way. I'm not quite sure but there is

:01:31. > :01:34.absolutely no excuse for this kind of stupidity, and they are, they are

:01:35. > :01:38.just stupid people who do this. I have no time at all for this kind of

:01:39. > :01:44.behaviour, at all, and I think I share that with many people on this

:01:45. > :01:48.island. We don't want this kind of thing to happen. Guernsey Police are

:01:49. > :01:53.analysing CCTV footage images from the nearby Beau Sejour Leisure

:01:54. > :02:00.Centre. And the skate park is now considering getting cameras itself

:02:01. > :02:03.to prevent further attacks. More than 100 employees at the

:02:04. > :02:08.telecoms company Sure are facing major changes to their pension

:02:09. > :02:11.scheme. That's around half the workforce ` those employed when it

:02:12. > :02:15.was still run by the States as Guernsey Telecoms. Sure says the

:02:16. > :02:19.final salary scheme they signed up to is no longer sustainable, and

:02:20. > :02:23.plans to close it. Staff will still get the pension they accrued to

:02:24. > :02:31.date, but will be asked to join a new scheme moving forward. The find

:02:32. > :02:35.benefit scheme, which is a final salary `based scheme when you

:02:36. > :02:38.retire, is clearly not sustainable and we have to find solutions to

:02:39. > :02:42.address that, in a way that the pensioners and members are going to

:02:43. > :02:47.be... The value will reflect what they put in to date.

:02:48. > :02:49.A UK travel company that specialises in bringing holiday`makers to the

:02:50. > :02:55.Channel Islands has bought Preston Travel, which collapsed last month.

:02:56. > :02:57.3X Travel, based in Surrey, has bought the company and plans to

:02:58. > :03:00.re`launch as Preston Holidays. Preston Travel had been bringing

:03:01. > :03:04.around 20,000 visitors a year to Jersey. That's about 8% of the total

:03:05. > :03:07.number. 3X Travel, which specialises in short breaks, family and group

:03:08. > :03:12.holidays to the Channel Islands, has bought its entire assets, as well as

:03:13. > :03:15.its customer base. EasyJet bosses say they haven't

:03:16. > :03:18.ruled out further expansion in the Channel Islands, as the airline

:03:19. > :03:21.launched its Jersey to London Gatwick route this weekend. Here's

:03:22. > :03:25.the first aeroplane touching down to a water cannon welcome on Sunday

:03:26. > :03:28.morning. The low`cost carrier takes over the Gatwick route from Flybe,

:03:29. > :03:34.which stopped flying between Guernsey and Jersey to London due to

:03:35. > :03:36.rising costs. EasyJet says current conditions at Guernsey airport

:03:37. > :03:41.prevent it from taking over the service there. We looked closely at

:03:42. > :03:47.Guernsey and it presented an attractive opportunity to us. Our

:03:48. > :03:49.problem is that the runway length presented some operational

:03:50. > :03:53.restrictions, so for the moment it is not something we are able to

:03:54. > :03:56.consider, sadly, but we will see what happens in the future.

:03:57. > :04:00.Three people have put themselves forward as candidates in an Alderney

:04:01. > :04:03.States by`election. It follows the death of States member Paul Arditti

:04:04. > :04:07.earlier this year. The three facing the public vote are Tony Barnes, Lin

:04:08. > :04:11.Maurice and Norma Paris. Voting takes place on Saturday the 12th of

:04:12. > :04:13.April. Financial support from islanders has

:04:14. > :04:16.secured the future of Jersey Heritage, which looks after sites

:04:17. > :04:21.including Elizabeth Castle, La Hougue Bie and the Maritime Museum.

:04:22. > :04:24.The organisation faced a funding crisis a few years ago, and was

:04:25. > :04:28.forced to cut jobs and reduce opening times. Since then it's

:04:29. > :04:33.completed a three`year deal with the States, where both parties match

:04:34. > :04:36.funding 50/50. Emma Chambers has been speaking to Heritage bosses

:04:37. > :04:41.about the future, ahead of the start of this year's summer season. The

:04:42. > :04:44.future looked bleak for Jersey's biggest tourist attractions when the

:04:45. > :04:50.group in charge of them suffered a severe funding crisis, which left it

:04:51. > :04:53.?1 million a year short. Fast`forward four years, and now the

:04:54. > :04:56.future is looking a lot brighter. Even though the castles and museums

:04:57. > :05:03.still have reduced opening hours, the number of people visiting them

:05:04. > :05:05.has increased by 13%. That's because the three`year agreement Jersey

:05:06. > :05:07.Heritage made with the Government to match public funding with

:05:08. > :05:14.self`generated income is providing stability. There has been some

:05:15. > :05:18.reduction in the level of service we are providing, which in the future

:05:19. > :05:21.we will look to address back up, but that change has produced a great

:05:22. > :05:25.deal of money and investment from the States which has allowed us to

:05:26. > :05:32.deliver more change on the sites, which was a long time coming. That

:05:33. > :05:36.in turn has stimulated more use from tourists and locals. Over the last

:05:37. > :05:40.five years, the membership scheme has had the biggest boost, from 2000

:05:41. > :05:43.to 9000. It's this support from locals that's enabled a number of

:05:44. > :05:49.investments in the service for this year, including a move into digital

:05:50. > :05:53.technology. We have created what's known as a virtual pocket museum and

:05:54. > :05:56.it is a 3D app, actually an augmented reality app, which means

:05:57. > :06:04.we can upload parts of the collection in 3D files. From Celtic

:06:05. > :06:08.coins to an ongoing ice age project, Jersey's sites already span vast

:06:09. > :06:11.swathes of history. But the organisation is looking to the

:06:12. > :06:21.future, and a funding model based on much firmer ground.

:06:22. > :06:27.And that's the news from the Channel Islands tonight. Newsnight is

:06:28. > :06:29.starting on BBC Two. That will bring you to midnight. I will leave you

:06:30. > :06:34.with the weather. you to midnight. I will leave you

:06:35. > :06:38.with After the warmth of the weekend it hasn't been too bad today apart

:06:39. > :06:49.from thundery showers. Those will die away away and we will have

:06:50. > :06:54.thousand patches. Most of those showers have moved out of the way

:06:55. > :06:59.with just a small chance one to let behind for a large part of the night

:07:00. > :07:04.it is dry, then misty with some fog especially around Jersey first thing

:07:05. > :07:06.tomorrow morning. That will move out of the way readily through the

:07:07. > :07:10.morning and into the afternoon and then we will have spells of sunshine

:07:11. > :07:17.a 14 to 16 degrees the top temperature. Perhaps the best more

:07:18. > :07:21.cloud, but it will still be warm, temperatures up to 18 degrees on

:07:22. > :07:26.Wednesday, cooler on Thursday and Friday with a small chance of

:07:27. > :07:28.showers but otherwise mainly dry. In a second we will have the full UK

:07:29. > :07:35.forecast from us, good night. Some rain will clear the atmosphere

:07:36. > :07:43.on Thursday. More information on all of that. Hello, talk of the

:07:44. > :07:47.day-to-day has been the Saharan dust. If you have no idea what I'm

:07:48. > :07:52.talking about, here is an explanation for you. Essentially, in

:07:53. > :07:56.the last 24-hour is, there has been wind from the Saharan desert, you

:07:57. > :08:00.can get an idea of where it has been coming from, by the motion of the

:08:01. > :08:05.cloud on a satellite picture. Low pressure. The wind in the atmosphere

:08:06. > :08:09.picking up some of the dust from the Sahara desert, shunted across

:08:10. > :08:13.western parts of Europe, and all of it on Sunday night into Monday felt

:08:14. > :08:16.the ground for the some us were waiting to find some grubby cars,

:08:17. > :08:21.but that's the closest to desert whether we're going to get, apart

:08:22. > :08:24.from the dust. We've also had other pollutants in the atmosphere. In

:08:25. > :08:30.London and Manchester, pollution is high. You can get our environmental

:08:31. > :08:34.summary online. The skies have been washed out by the rain across

:08:35. > :08:38.western parts of the UK this evening. Heavy rain across parts of

:08:39. > :08:39.Wales, thunderstorms, and by the
