:00:08. > :00:13.Good evening. Guernsey's government "needs to get
:00:14. > :00:15.off its backside" and do more to encourage a new university in the
:00:16. > :00:18.island. That's according to the former Treasury and Resources
:00:19. > :00:22.Minister Charles Parkinson. He's slammed the States for dragging its
:00:23. > :00:25.feet and not doing enough to promote the potential of a university in the
:00:26. > :00:30.island. The States say they've been working hard. Simon Fairclough
:00:31. > :00:34.reports. Will the University of Guernsey ever
:00:35. > :00:37.have its own prospectus? The first postgraduate students were supposed
:00:38. > :00:41.to start in October, but that target looks likely to be missed. Now the
:00:42. > :00:44.island's former Treasury and Resources Minister has slammed the
:00:45. > :00:53.States for not doing enough to promote the potential economic
:00:54. > :00:57.benefits and dragging its feet. I just think this is far too passive.
:00:58. > :01:01.It is all very well having a committee meeting once a month and
:01:02. > :01:07.waiting for Susan Jackson did tell you what happens next time. The
:01:08. > :01:10.States needs to get off its backside and do something. It is far too
:01:11. > :01:17.important a project judges said I can wait. `` to just sit back and
:01:18. > :01:21.wait. This is where he thinks the new campus should go ` the Castel
:01:22. > :01:24.Hospital and the King Edward VII Hospital. He thinks the States
:01:25. > :01:27.should be doing more to improve the infrastructure and making the sites
:01:28. > :01:30.available. But today, as young people plan their futures at a
:01:31. > :01:33.career show, the Commerce and Employment Minister insists the
:01:34. > :01:38.States is working as hard as it can to encourage a university. You have
:01:39. > :01:43.the Chief Minister, myself, the deputy minister all sitting on this
:01:44. > :01:48.group, and the chief officers. We couldn't be doing more. All we are
:01:49. > :01:52.waiting for is Susan to come up with the private funding. We couldn't be
:01:53. > :01:56.working harder. So, we've heard both sides of the argument ` the only one
:01:57. > :01:59.we haven't heard is from the company behind the scheme. Despite repeated
:02:00. > :02:06.attempts by the BBC, no`one from Susan Jackson Associates was
:02:07. > :02:10.available for comment. A public briefing ahead of the start
:02:11. > :02:12.of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry into historic abuse gets
:02:13. > :02:15.under way tomorrow. It will investigate what went wrong in the
:02:16. > :02:18.island's children's homes and fostering services over many
:02:19. > :02:25.decades. It'll also look into the claims of abuse at the former
:02:26. > :02:28.children's home Haut de la Garenne. Job seekers in Jersey are to be
:02:29. > :02:32.taught the basics of computer coding, like building a website, in
:02:33. > :02:35.the first scheme of its kind in a bid to help them into the digital
:02:36. > :02:38.sector. More than 1,800 people are currently unemployed. The States
:02:39. > :02:41.body Digital Jersey, which promotes digital growth, hopes to provide
:02:42. > :02:54.2,000 extra jobs in the industry by 2020. Sophie Sulheria reports.
:02:55. > :02:57.Coding, computer language that to most scenes complex and Cobb
:02:58. > :03:02.located, yet it is something we use nearly everyday. For the first
:03:03. > :03:11.time, local job`seekers will be taught the basics of coding. We want
:03:12. > :03:16.to find people are potential work placement. Hopefully, the course
:03:17. > :03:20.will give them a further understanding of the code, so when
:03:21. > :03:29.they go into this trainee role, they have that problem`solving mind. This
:03:30. > :03:32.six`week scheme with the idea of this former headteacher, to help
:03:33. > :03:37.some of the unemployed people in Jersey to get into online work. I
:03:38. > :03:43.decided to teach myself how to code. I find it straightforward. I
:03:44. > :03:49.thought, if I can do it, surely anybody can. The government team
:03:50. > :03:53.helping Islanders find employment support the idea. It'll give them
:03:54. > :03:57.another the background to help them with interviews and give them the
:03:58. > :04:07.confidence to go out and get jobs in different areas. Digital Jersey said
:04:08. > :04:15.they welcomed the scheme and that learning skills is essential for
:04:16. > :04:21.growth in the. `` growth in this sector.
:04:22. > :04:24.People from Guernsey who suffer from a serious eye condition will no
:04:25. > :04:27.longer have to travel to Southampton for treatment. New equipment and
:04:28. > :04:29.staff have been employed to help patients suffering from age`related
:04:30. > :04:31.macular degeneration. Mike Wilkins report.
:04:32. > :04:34.This is what age`related macular degeneration, or AMD, does to your
:04:35. > :04:37.eyesight. The blurred vision will never go away. In fact, the
:04:38. > :04:40.condition is the leading cause of blindness. People from Guernsey have
:04:41. > :04:43.to travel to Southampton for treatment, but not any more. This
:04:44. > :04:49.machine and two specialists mean that patients can now be treated on
:04:50. > :04:53.island. Nick Le Poidevin has suffered from macular degeneration
:04:54. > :05:00.for just over three years. He told me he's had to fly to Southampton 30
:05:01. > :05:06.times and won't miss the travelling. I had one occasion when I broke my
:05:07. > :05:09.leg at the end of 2012 and I had to continue the injections, because
:05:10. > :05:15.they have to be done in six`week they have to be done in six`week
:05:16. > :05:24.intervals. They're a was on a cold January morning leaving with my leg
:05:25. > :05:28.in plaster. It just shows the inconvenience which people do have
:05:29. > :05:32.going to Southampton all the time. Now, this is great news for the
:05:33. > :05:36.patients and their families, but at a time when the HSSD is trying to
:05:37. > :05:39.trim its spending, how can it introduce a new service? There are
:05:40. > :05:42.about 100 people who currently stand to benefit from this new
:05:43. > :05:45.arrangement, with 30 new cases each year. And as our population
:05:46. > :05:50.continues to age, the staff here could become a lot busier. It is a
:05:51. > :05:59.win`win situation. We have been paying for the travel for people. We
:06:00. > :06:05.will save about ?60,000 a year not having to pay for the travel. It
:06:06. > :06:06.enables us to treat two other conditions which we weren't funding
:06:07. > :06:32.previously. That is it for now.
:06:33. > :06:37.We have some rain in the forecast over the next day. There could be
:06:38. > :06:46.some quite heavy bursts later on tonight. It will clear and then
:06:47. > :06:51.become mainly drive. The best of any brightness will be right at the end
:06:52. > :06:55.of the day. Initially tonight it is dry, then the cloud turns up and
:06:56. > :06:59.thickens and produces a few light showers. The heavier bursts will
:07:00. > :07:04.come up from the south tomorrow morning. The showery outbreaks of
:07:05. > :07:10.rain will continue to the morning and then Peter Wright in the
:07:11. > :07:15.afternoon. The wind will become westerly and 14 degrees will be the
:07:16. > :07:17.top temperature. Into the weekend that will stay unsettled and the
:07:18. > :07:23.wind direction will be from the West or Southwest, meaning fresh air for
:07:24. > :07:24.us. A fine day on Friday, more cloud and showers on Saturday and more
:07:25. > :07:34.persistent rain on Sunday. be dry. The air pollution has been
:07:35. > :07:40.hitting the headlines today. For more information on that, here is my
:07:41. > :07:44.colleague. Good evening. Very hazy skies in
:07:45. > :07:51.London today and many other towns and cities across the UK. On
:07:52. > :07:54.Thursday there is the chance of some pretty high pollution in the
:07:55. > :08:00.south-east and East Anglia but by the time we get towards the end of
:08:01. > :08:05.the week, we will see clearer Atlantique air coming in and we
:08:06. > :08:10.should get rid of the Saharan dust which has been making services
:08:11. > :08:11.grubby in the last few days. You can see
