:00:13. > :00:17.Good evening. More money and more staff have been pledged to help
:00:18. > :00:21.Jersey's growing number of dementia patients. ?500,000 has been set
:00:22. > :00:26.aside for services this year and 16 new mental health professionals are
:00:27. > :00:29.being trained. The number of islanders with dementia is set to
:00:30. > :00:33.double in less than 30 years to about 3000. Patients and their
:00:34. > :00:38.carers say the extra resources have been a long time coming. Jen Smith
:00:39. > :00:43.reports. Janet Carlin cared for her dad until he was too ill to stay at
:00:44. > :00:47.home. For four and a half years she nursed him as dementia took hold.
:00:48. > :00:50.She says one of the worst things was watching her dad lose control. He
:00:51. > :00:57.was falling over all the time, especially at night when he got out
:00:58. > :01:03.of bed. If I left the room, he would panic, so he would follow me because
:01:04. > :01:07.he did not know what was going on. That was 24 hours a day, constant
:01:08. > :01:12.care. This graphic compares a healthy brain with one showing signs
:01:13. > :01:18.of dementia. It's a global problem and one that's particularly apparent
:01:19. > :01:21.in Jersey. Dementia is a term that refers to a number of conditions.
:01:22. > :01:25.They are all categorised by a progressive decline in cognitive
:01:26. > :01:28.functions. This is most often memory, but it can be other things,
:01:29. > :01:34.for example language or orientation in space. The island's health
:01:35. > :01:39.department says it's making dealing with dementia a priority due to the
:01:40. > :01:45.aging population. Janet hopes carers as well as patients will be
:01:46. > :01:49.considered. The people that helped me look after him were extremely
:01:50. > :01:54.good but I know they were very stretched. It must put a lot of
:01:55. > :01:57.strain on the people that care for the carers and people with dementia
:01:58. > :02:00.if they are under that kind of pressure. Half a million pounds has
:02:01. > :02:05.been set aside to improve services and fund more support. The race is
:02:06. > :02:09.on to make sure we're ready. So what difference will patients and
:02:10. > :02:12.their families see from this extra investment? Ian Dyer is the director
:02:13. > :02:18.of services for older people in Jersey. The difference they are
:02:19. > :02:23.going to see if there will be more people to support them and more
:02:24. > :02:28.people with specialist skills working with people with dementia.
:02:29. > :02:33.More psychiatry, more psychology, more nursing, more social work, more
:02:34. > :02:35.occupational therapy. We will also employ a bilingual caseworker,
:02:36. > :02:41.someone who can work directly with the Portuguese community and the
:02:42. > :02:46.ageing population within the Portuguese community. We are
:02:47. > :02:48.hopefully starting to make the appointments in September or October
:02:49. > :02:51.this year. The Latvian Ambassador to the UK
:02:52. > :02:54.says Guernsey needs to do more to improve the lives of Latvian people
:02:55. > :02:58.working in the island. Andris Teikmanis is in the bailiwick this
:02:59. > :03:01.week. He says both governments need to work together to improve pensions
:03:02. > :03:03.and work permits for Latvians in Guernsey.
:03:04. > :03:05.A trade union leader claims the States of Guernsey made guarantees
:03:06. > :03:09.that Sure's pension arrangements wouldn't change when it was sold off
:03:10. > :03:12.in 2002. That's the view of Martyn Priaulx from the Prospect union
:03:13. > :03:15.after the telecoms company decided to end its defined benefit pension
:03:16. > :03:25.scheme. Mr Priaulx says assurances were made to telecom staff about
:03:26. > :03:28.their pensions. If we go back ten or 12 years, we were given a lot of
:03:29. > :03:34.guarantees from the senior states people at the time that everything
:03:35. > :03:37.would continue in a shadow scheme exactly the same as we had before
:03:38. > :03:40.and that was one of the big issues at the time with the take`over.
:03:41. > :03:42.It's a year this weekend since Guernsey woman Sarah Groves was
:03:43. > :03:45.murdered on a houseboat while travelling in India. Dutchman
:03:46. > :03:49.Richard de Witt is accused of her murder and has been on trial for
:03:50. > :03:52.months. He denies all charges. Sarah's father Vic told the BBC the
:03:53. > :03:56.family is still struggling to heal. It is coming up to one year since
:03:57. > :04:01.Sarah was killed. How has the year been for you and your family?
:04:02. > :04:06.Obviously the worst year of our lives. They say that time is a
:04:07. > :04:15.healer but it has not healed in any way and probably never will. You
:04:16. > :04:19.realise that you have a life to lead and you sort of have to get on with
:04:20. > :04:23.it but it is punctuated all the time and it is never a smooth flow
:04:24. > :04:26.because you are always coming up against the memory or the reality or
:04:27. > :04:39.the practicalities of the fact that we have lost somebody very near and
:04:40. > :04:42.dear. I can only imagine it has been very difficult one year on to not
:04:43. > :04:53.see justice being served. It hasn't and we are a long way from knowing
:04:54. > :04:58.even if we get that. It is quite a concern to all of us. Although
:04:59. > :05:02.things are speeding up, and that has been pretty well publicised, that
:05:03. > :05:05.the one a month is moving to up to six witnesses a month, which is
:05:06. > :05:08.great, but we still need some pretty solid evidence against this guy
:05:09. > :05:12.because it is very circumstantial. I don't think either of us, any of us,
:05:13. > :05:16.will rest until we know that the right person has been brought to
:05:17. > :05:30.justice. How will you and your family be marking one year on since
:05:31. > :05:34.Sarah's death? Guernsey can be a very small place and it is rather in
:05:35. > :05:38.our face at the moment so we are going to spend it together as a
:05:39. > :05:41.family in the Manchester area. I have been able to immerse myself in
:05:42. > :05:45.the foundation and many other things that are going on. The media and
:05:46. > :05:49.that type of thing. For Katie it is terrible. And enduring. How shall I
:05:50. > :05:54.say this? This is the pinnacle of emotion, this weekend, where we have
:05:55. > :05:58.just got to try and get through it. I am sure we will, but it will not
:05:59. > :06:02.be easy. And you can hear much more from Vic
:06:03. > :06:06.Groves on his fight for justice for Sarah on BBC Radio Guernsey from
:06:07. > :06:10.seven tomorrow morning. But from me, that's it. Have a nice weekend and
:06:11. > :06:19.I'll leave you with the weather with David Braine. Good evening. I think
:06:20. > :06:23.we have a cloudy weekend across the islands this weekend with some rain
:06:24. > :06:28.in the forecast and a fair amount of low cloud making it misty at times.
:06:29. > :06:33.Tomorrow is cloudy with drizzle in the wind and a fair amount of low
:06:34. > :06:37.cloud on the tops of the highest ground of the larger islands.
:06:38. > :06:43.Overnight, initially some clear spells. Fine to start but dreary to
:06:44. > :06:47.end with cloud and rain coming in towards dawn. Damp to start, nine or
:06:48. > :06:54.ten. Through the morning and into the afternoon, the drizzle will
:06:55. > :06:57.peter out for a time. It is quite misty. Winds becoming southerly and
:06:58. > :07:03.freshening. Top temperatures about 14. Quite humid and then more
:07:04. > :07:10.persistent rain possible moving into Sunday. No frost. Cloudy and mild
:07:11. > :07:15.all weekend. Quite heavy rain on Sunday and it does not clear away
:07:16. > :07:19.until the end of the day on Monday. Both days are cloudy and worked with
:07:20. > :07:23.the winds picking up. The south`westerly wind will be fresh
:07:24. > :07:29.and strong across Kinsey as we move into Sunday. Monday and Tuesday next
:07:30. > :07:31.week the fine weather returns. Have a good weekend and I leave you with
:07:32. > :07:33.this summary. well. The national weather forecast
:07:34. > :07:35.comes from Peter Gibbs.
