:00:08. > :00:46.And the weather should stay dry with sunny spells. All the details later.
:00:47. > :00:50.There's pressure for a major re`think on the future of Jersey's
:00:51. > :00:54.waterfront development tonight. It's after a major bank decided to pull
:00:55. > :00:57.out of moving into a multi million pound finance centre due to be built
:00:58. > :01:01.on the Esplanade car park site. It's come as a huge knock to the
:01:02. > :01:03.Government funded company behind the plans. Emma Chambers reports.
:01:04. > :01:06.It's costing the Government millions but its hoped this multistorey
:01:07. > :01:09.International Finance Centre ` planned for Jersey's Esplanade `
:01:10. > :01:16.will transform the island's leading industry and the Waterfront area.
:01:17. > :01:19.The Royal Bank of Canada expressed interest in housing 20% of this
:01:20. > :01:23.development ` but has decided to move into the new Dandara block
:01:24. > :01:26.planned just a bit further up the road, as they say "the 66`72
:01:27. > :01:28.Esplanade development was the most suitable." The loss of this major
:01:29. > :01:43.bank concretes concerns some politicians had about the finance
:01:44. > :01:48.centre. The States have got to decide what
:01:49. > :01:55.we do with the master plan. I do not think personally it works any more.
:01:56. > :02:01.It was designed to be built in boom times. We have not had boom times
:02:02. > :02:06.for seven years. Do we need another 2 million square feet of offices? I
:02:07. > :02:09.do not think so. And even though there's still no
:02:10. > :02:12.confirmed companies lined up, those behind the plans say there's still
:02:13. > :02:17.enough interest for the new Esplanade quarter to go ahead. There
:02:18. > :02:23.is such a shortage of grade a space. Now is not the time to be reviewing
:02:24. > :02:29.this master plan. We need certainty as to provide the tenants with
:02:30. > :02:32.confidence. Despite these reassurances, Deputy
:02:33. > :02:34.Power is holding a meeting about concerns for the future of the
:02:35. > :02:39.Esplanade development. In the meantime the hope is no other
:02:40. > :02:43.finance companies lose interest. A fourth person who was arrested
:02:44. > :02:46.this morning in connection with the murder of Colin Chevalier in Jersey
:02:47. > :02:49.last weekend has been released pending further enquiries. Mr
:02:50. > :02:52.Chevalier was found dead in his flat in St Helier last Saturday night.
:02:53. > :02:54.Earlier this week, 35`year`old Darren Neil McCormack appeared in
:02:55. > :03:00.court charged with Mr Chevalier's murder.
:03:01. > :03:02.Jersey Police have charged two more men with dangerous driving,
:03:03. > :03:06.following the death of Vitor Fernandes on Victoria Avenue. The

:03:11. > :03:13.19`year`old Luis Carlos Alves Cardoso and 29`year`old Jeronimo
:03:14. > :03:18.Vieira Santos will appear in the Magistrates' Court on Monday.
:03:19. > :03:21.21`year`old Jose Silva was in court yesterday charged with death by

:03:25. > :03:27.will begin industrial action on Good Friday following the breakdown of

:03:32. > :03:37.met union leaders today after the decision to cut workers' hours.
:03:38. > :03:44.Union members say they won't strike but will take some form of
:03:45. > :03:47.industrial action. The number of mothers breast`feeding
:03:48. > :03:49.their babies in the Channel Islands falls well behind many developed
:03:50. > :03:53.countries. Latest figures show around three quarters of new parents
:03:54. > :03:58.try it ` above the UK average, but near the bottom of the table if you
:03:59. > :04:02.look at the global figures. It's one issue raised in a report out today
:04:03. > :04:06.looking at the health of Islanders. Penny Elderfield reports.
:04:07. > :04:12.With Easter just around the corner a bit of a treat today, for this
:04:13. > :04:18.mother and toddler group. Not necessarily that nutritious. But
:04:19. > :04:21.tasty. But when these mums and grandmothers first had their babies,
:04:22. > :04:27.nutrition wise something they would no doubt have heard was that breast
:04:28. > :04:41.was best. It gives them a start in life.
:04:42. > :04:46.Breast`feeding rates are low. 77% of new mums in Guernsey give it a go.
:04:47. > :04:49.As do 75% in Jersey. On par with in England ` but globally the UK is
:04:50. > :04:52.falling behind, coming 25th out of the 36 developed countries.
:04:53. > :04:54.And the States want to improve on those figures.
:04:55. > :05:03.You want to do the best for your baby. The best you can do is
:05:04. > :05:07.breast`feed. The stats on breast`feeding are a
:05:08. > :05:09.small part of a wider snapshot of the health of the Islands, published
:05:10. > :05:14.today. Generally life expectancy here is better than the UK at around
:05:15. > :05:16.84 years for women, and 79 for men in both Islands.
:05:17. > :05:19.One issue where there's a difference though is teen pregnancies. In
:05:20. > :05:23.Jersey between 2010 and 2012 there were on average around 18 a year.
:05:24. > :05:26.But in Guernsey the rate was more than double that with 87 teenagers
:05:27. > :05:31.falling pregnant during that time. But both Islands are still below the
:05:32. > :05:35.UK average. But a problem shared by both islands
:05:36. > :05:38.is the number of people dying from preventable illnesses with 17% of
:05:39. > :05:42.deaths in Guernsey and 15% in Jersey caused by smoking.
:05:43. > :05:50.And for health officials the fact they're preventable is a key.
:05:51. > :05:58.We still have this big burden of disease. Even though globally we are
:05:59. > :06:04.doing well in terms of the average length of life, there are still a
:06:05. > :06:08.lot of preventable deaths here. So whilst we may all on average be
:06:09. > :06:11.living longer the report out today gives out a clear message about some
:06:12. > :06:14.of the health issues still facing the islands.
:06:15. > :06:17.Well Dr Susan Turnbull is Jersey's medical officer of health. I asked
:06:18. > :06:19.her why Jersey's teenage pregnancy rates are lower than Guernsey's as
:06:20. > :06:25.mentioned in Penny Elderfield's report.
:06:26. > :06:31.There is a major difference compared with the rest of the report. We have
:06:32. > :06:35.the contraceptive services available for teenagers. They do not have
:06:36. > :06:44.equivalent services. These figures will create the leverage to make the
:06:45. > :06:49.case for similar services. Breast`feeding rates are lower than
:06:50. > :06:52.other developed nations. Is it because mothers have to go back to
:06:53. > :07:07.work? There is an issue of women who have
:07:08. > :07:12.to work full`time. Women coming here often have to work full`time rather
:07:13. > :07:18.than part`time. But we can do everything possible to encourage
:07:19. > :07:33.women to breast`feed. But mate mean making it easier for workplaces. ``
:07:34. > :07:36.that may mean. The report reveals there are higher
:07:37. > :07:39.levels of lung and liver disease here and more incidences of various
:07:40. > :07:42.cancers. We've heard this before and nothing seems to have changed. Are
:07:43. > :07:44.people taking these warnings seriously or are we fighting a
:07:45. > :07:48.losing battle? These are the figures showing how
:07:49. > :07:56.lies are shortened. People die prematurely. It is a story that is
:07:57. > :08:13.going on. We will carry on doing everything we can to deduce it. Pars
:08:14. > :08:20.to reduce it. Still ahead ` we will talk to Jason
:08:21. > :08:27.Donovan. And we will have the weather
:08:28. > :08:30.forecast in a few moments. Decomposing human bodies in liquid
:08:31. > :08:34.nitrogen and the fastest cars on the planet. They might not sound like
:08:35. > :08:38.they have much in common but they were two of the big talking points
:08:39. > :08:40.at Jersey's first TEDx Talk today. The not`for`profit group has been
:08:41. > :08:44.putting on global events with inspirational speakers for decades
:08:45. > :08:52.but this is the first TED Talk to be held in the Channel Islands. Jen
:08:53. > :09:07.Smith went along to find out more. I am at Jersey's first TEDx topped.
:09:08. > :09:19.Tell me a little bit about the land speed record. We were the first ever
:09:20. > :09:30.to break the sound barrier on land. You must get a lot of interest in
:09:31. > :09:36.your ideas. Yes. There are 5500 schools on the programme at the
:09:37. > :09:41.moment. When we run the car next year you will get all the data on
:09:42. > :09:48.the car. Why are these talks important?
:09:49. > :09:57.The New World is all about innovation and creativity.
:09:58. > :10:01.The idea of TEDx talks is to inspire innovation.
:10:02. > :10:12.Here is the weather. Here is
:10:13. > :10:22.It stays fine throughout this weekend and in the run`up to next
:10:23. > :10:27.weekend as well. It is staying dry. Plenty of sunshine around. Fairly
:10:28. > :10:35.light winds. Here is what is going on.
:10:36. > :10:39.These weather fronts are making their way southwards over the next
:10:40. > :10:44.24 hours. They are delivering rangy Northern parts of the UK. As the
:10:45. > :10:59.front moves towards us it will become more week. For Sunday high
:11:00. > :11:04.pressure making itself known. Tonight we have clear skies for
:11:05. > :11:11.many. Temperatures fall away fairly quickly tonight. The winds will be
:11:12. > :11:21.fairly light. There will be some missed tomorrow morning. That should
:11:22. > :11:28.lift. Clyde Bush and then towards the end of the day `` there will be
:11:29. > :12:01.closed towards the end of the day tomorrow.
:12:02. > :12:06.The outlook ` good news. The high pressure stays with us. It will be
:12:07. > :12:12.quite pleasant. Thank you. Looking good for the
:12:13. > :12:28.weekend. That is offered no.
:12:29. > :12:39.Coming up, remembering one of the most famous lifeboat rescues. Plus a
:12:40. > :12:40.lot: Four legs against two. Who won in this contest of horsepower
:12:41. > :12:44.against Manpower? And we'll talk to Jason Donovan, the
:12:45. > :12:47.star of a colourful show wowing audiences in Plymouth Now for one of
:12:48. > :12:50.the most remarkable rescue stories in North Devon.
:12:51. > :12:54.More than a century ago, the lifeboat crew in Lynmouth had to
:12:55. > :12:57.drag their boat 13 miles up and down hugely steep roads all the way to
:12:58. > :13:01.Porlock just to be able to launch it. A documentary's been made about
:13:02. > :13:06.the extraordinary effort and it premieres in Lynmouth tonight. Our
:13:07. > :13:13.North Devon reporter Andrea Ormsby has the story.
:13:14. > :13:19.Calm today, but on the evening of January 12, 1899, the sea here was
:13:20. > :13:27.so rough, the lifeboat couldn't launch. But over this huge hill, the
:13:28. > :13:31.more sheltered harbour of Porlock. What followed was so remarkable,
:13:32. > :13:38.this documentary has been mean to tell the story. The boat was dragged
:13:39. > :13:42.by horses, the crew, and around 100 local people, up and down more than
:13:43. > :13:45.1000 feet in the dark all night, with no food. And then, from row out
:13:46. > :13:58.to the rescue. Ken Blakey, who lives in Lynemouth,
:13:59. > :14:02.used to be a TV graphic designer. Instead of having a real camera, I
:14:03. > :14:06.have an imaginary camera which I can move around in the computer. It has
:14:07. > :14:13.taken in many months to make this documentary. It is really, really
:14:14. > :14:16.blown me away, people's reactions. They have really taken to. Instead
:14:17. > :14:20.of just being a film, the whole community has been brought together,
:14:21. > :14:25.and it has really got about, the story. It was this man, the coxswain
:14:26. > :14:29.of the ship, who may be incredible decision to drag the boats to
:14:30. > :14:34.Porlock. Tonight, his great`grandson will be at the premiere of this new
:14:35. > :14:40.documentary. It's amazing to think that that man was related to me.
:14:41. > :14:47.It's just unbelievable, you know? Very proud. Very proud. It is a
:14:48. > :14:50.story that has captured hearts, soon to be turned into a ?15 million
:14:51. > :14:55.feature film. Shooting starts later this year.
:14:56. > :15:00.Who would win a race between a man and a horse?
:15:01. > :15:04.Two legs against four? You think the horse? It sounds like it would be no
:15:05. > :15:08.contest, doesn't it? Well, today, Adam Holland from Tavistock, known
:15:09. > :15:10.as Tango to his friends, took on a horse, also called Tango, over a
:15:11. > :15:17.10`mile course. Spotlight's Janine Jansen went along for the charity
:15:18. > :15:24.race at Yelverton Rock. Meet Tango, the five`year`old rescue
:15:25. > :15:32.horse. Versus 27`year`old marathon runner also known as Tango. So,
:15:33. > :15:37.Tango against Tango across ten miles of mixed to rain. Did I mention Adam
:15:38. > :15:40.was the youngest person ever to run 100 marathons, and he holds the
:15:41. > :15:44.world record for being the youngest and fastest person to run ten
:15:45. > :15:50.marathons in ten days? I think it is going to be Adam, definitely. The
:15:51. > :15:55.horse, I think. Somehow. The macro a man against a horse. The horse is
:15:56. > :15:59.good for a straight line run. Over a very short distance. But I still
:16:00. > :16:03.think the man will win. The horse has got to stop to go through
:16:04. > :16:10.gateways and cattle grids, whereas the horse `` Adam Levine go across
:16:11. > :16:15.them. But then when they get onto more land, the horse has the
:16:16. > :16:20.advantage of being to Gallup, whereas Adam can only keep up one
:16:21. > :16:24.place. It should be a close call. In about an hour and 50 minutes, and
:16:25. > :16:32.despite errors of course, adamant beats the horse. When we hit the
:16:33. > 0:09:40downhill, obviously, Tango had to ease off, and I carried on. I felt a
0:09:41 > 0:09:41bit guilty leaving the horse behind. And
