:00:00. > :00:14.Good evening. Tonight, paid parking That's all from us. Now gn BBC

:00:15. > :00:18.Good evening. Tonight, paid parking is a step closer in Guernsex ` and

:00:19. > :00:21.the proposal for a free bus service is out. Guernsey States rejdcted the

:00:22. > :00:25.official transport strategy, during a long day of debate, inste`d

:00:26. > :00:29.favouring a minority report aimed at reducing car usage. It means

:00:30. > :00:35.Deputies have supported the idea of paid parking in St Peter Port. The

:00:36. > :00:38.idea was that would help pax for free buses, but now members have

:00:39. > :00:41.also supported moves to charge people for that service. Thd debate

:00:42. > :00:50.will continue tomorrow, as Penny Elderfield reports. Free parking ` a

:00:51. > :00:54.little perk of living in Gudrnsey. But one you may have to say goodbye

:00:55. > :01:01.to. At least in long term spaces in Town, because the States today

:01:02. > :01:04.supported introducing paid parking. The debate will continue tolorrow,

:01:05. > :01:08.but as it stands it'll cost 60p an hour for long term spaces in St

:01:09. > :01:12.Peter Port's main car parks. And to park in the short stay areas you'll

:01:13. > :01:16.have to purchase a parking clock for ?16 each year. A new CO2 and width

:01:17. > :01:19.tax when a car's first registered is also being introduced. All `imed at

:01:20. > :01:32.getting people out their cars, and on to these... Because that will be

:01:33. > :01:40.one of the new perks. Deputhes agreed that the fare should be fixed

:01:41. > :01:43.at 60p per journey. If we go back several years, bus ridership was 1.6

:01:44. > :01:47.million. Now we're looking `t ? and ?1 bus fares. Any increase or

:01:48. > :01:50.imposition of the fare on a new strategy is something that does make

:01:51. > :01:54.any potential new strategy hs very vulnerable. The debate will continue

:01:55. > :01:57.tomorrow, but with the idea of bus fares back on the table, whdther the

:01:58. > :02:06.States will agree to the new strategy now is uncertain. Jersey's

:02:07. > :02:10.politicians have approved a policy to cap the amount of people moving

:02:11. > :02:18.to the island for work to ctrb the growing population of the island.

:02:19. > :02:21.The idea ` which split the States Chamber ` will limit migrathon to

:02:22. > :02:28.325 people this year and next, while a longer term plan is made. We have

:02:29. > :02:32.brought forward a number of 325 It keeps the working population at a

:02:33. > :02:37.level which copes with the `geing population. It keeps the working

:02:38. > :02:45.population at a constant level so that was why we focus on th`t number

:02:46. > :02:49.originally. Guernsey's Anglhcan Dean is retiring this summer. Thd Very

:02:50. > :02:53.Reverend Canon Paul Mellor has been a dean for 41 years and has been in

:02:54. > :02:56.the island for the last 11 xears. Guernsey'S Daisy Chain pre`school

:02:57. > :02:59.will close due to a lack of long`term funding. It provides a

:03:00. > :03:02.free service to children referred there by Health and Social Services

:03:03. > :03:05.` but is funded entirely by donations. It will close in July. An

:03:06. > :03:08.EU scheme designed to protect food names could see special protected

:03:09. > :03:12.status for Jersey milk` but not necessarily from cows in thd island.

:03:13. > :03:19.At the moment products for sale labelled as Jersey can be m`de only

:03:20. > :03:22.partly from the breed's milk. Now a UK Jersey cattle society has applied

:03:23. > :03:25.for Traditional Speciality Guarenteed status ` which would

:03:26. > :03:28.apply to milk from pedigree Jersey cows, even if it does not come from

:03:29. > :03:36.the island. Our reporter Sophie Sulehria has the details. The Jersey

:03:37. > :03:41.Cow ` known for its creamy, delicious milk. Its taste is as

:03:42. > :03:44.distinctive as the animal itself. But there's concern that sole dairy

:03:45. > :03:48.products labelled as "Jersex" may only contain a fraction of lilk from

:03:49. > :03:58.the breed. Which is why the The UK Jersey Dairy Association wants the

:03:59. > :04:01.name to be protected. It will mean that wherever of the products come

:04:02. > :04:04.from, they will be identifi`ble as from Pedigree Jersey cows, `nd so

:04:05. > :04:08.consumers, when they come on holiday, or if they are in `nother

:04:09. > :04:12.part of the country and PCB product, they will have the confidence to

:04:13. > :04:19.know exactly where the prodtct comes from. But will consumers understand

:04:20. > :04:24.what the designation actually means? Not everyone is confident. H think

:04:25. > :04:27.it is hugely confusing. There is very clear evidence from various

:04:28. > :04:35.projects that have been dond in the UK in the last ten years. The vast

:04:36. > :04:38.majority of the consumers in the UK, when they read a product as Channel

:04:39. > :04:41.Islands cream or Jersey butter or Jersey yoghurt or something like

:04:42. > :04:45.Jersey ice cream, they genuhnely think that product comes from

:04:46. > :04:51.Jersey, when it doesn't. Th`t is wrong. Jersey Dairy says it's

:04:52. > :04:53.broadly supportive of the application, but feel a bredd

:04:54. > :04:57.certification scheme would `chieve the same aim more quickly, `nd would

:04:58. > :05:02.be more easily understood. Ht uses the Genuine Jersey mark to show its

:05:03. > :05:08.produce is from the island. The Island's famous Black Butter is also

:05:09. > :05:10.applying for protected statts. The preserve is being considered for

:05:11. > :05:21.protected Geographical Indication, which means it could only bd

:05:22. > :05:24.produced in the island. Well tonight Defra say that they couldn't comment

:05:25. > :05:27.on concerns that consumers lay be confused by the status, but they did

:05:28. > :05:38.say the label Traditional Speciality Guaranteed makes it clear there is

:05:39. > :05:41.no geographical element involved. And you can hear more on thhs,

:05:42. > :05:44.including an interview with the UK's food minister, on BBC Radio Jersey

:05:45. > :05:48.with Matthew Price tomorrow morning from 6am. A man who assisted slave

:05:49. > :05:52.workers in Jersey during thd second world war will lay a wreath for for

:05:53. > :05:55.them on Liberation Day next. Bob Le Sueur will commemorate all hslanders

:05:56. > :05:58.who assisted slave workers during Occupation. The tribute will be paid

:05:59. > :06:04.at the Slave Workers Memori`l at Westmount in St Helier. These people

:06:05. > :06:10.took great of risk. And it wasn t easy, opening your home to `nother

:06:11. > :06:19.individual at a time of gre`t food shortage, apart from the risk of

:06:20. > :06:26.being arrested. That is the news tonight. Newsnight is starthng on

:06:27. > :06:30.BBC Two. I will leave you whth the weather

:06:31. > :06:37.good evening. We have some good weather to look forward to, heading

:06:38. > :06:43.into the holiday weekend. Tomorrow will be a bit disappointing but a

:06:44. > :06:49.few spots of rain. And some mist, first thing in the morning. We have

:06:50. > :06:56.some cloud across as, briefly, for the second half of the night. Then

:06:57. > :06:59.when we get some clear skies, that low cloud and mist all just fill in

:07:00. > :07:04.the gaps so that it becomes quite extensive by morning. Through the

:07:05. > :07:08.day there's a chance of somd brighter weather but not a great

:07:09. > :07:12.deal of that. Also the chance of a few showers turning up, verx light

:07:13. > :07:19.and fleeting and temperaturds of 14 Celsius. But it does get better The

:07:20. > :07:22.weekend forecast is very promising. Some cloud on Saturday mornhng but

:07:23. > :07:28.apart from that temperatures I the up and we should see some stnshine

:07:29. > :07:31.as well. From us, it is good night, and I will leave you with a summary.

:07:32. > :07:33.on th!t `t t(e loee.t, t`at there will "e qome suns`i.e `rgu.d.

:07:34. > :07:40.on th!t `t t(e loee.t, t`at there will be some sunshine around. More

:07:41. > :07:45.on that in the national forecast. Our weather is taking a turn for the

:07:46. > :07:50.colder. You would be forgiven for thinking that does not bode well for

:07:51. > :07:53.the Bank Holiday Weekend. But as we go through the weekend, temperatures

:07:54. > :07:58.will be performing a U-turn, and recovering, as we will see. England

:07:59. > :08:02.and Wales has borne the brunt of some heavy downpours, with still

:08:03. > :08:10.some lively show is out there at the moment. But they are fading. Clearer

:08:11. > :08:15.skies in Scotland, so here, some spots will get close to freezing if

:08:16. > :08:16.not below tonight. But a better day on the
