:00:08. > :00:18.No answer at 999 ` why one man's calls to emergency

:00:19. > :00:25.Plus the highest earthly appeal ` we meet the islander writing to

:00:26. > :00:27.the Pope in protest at plans for his local church.

:00:28. > :00:30.And the relay hits the road in Guernsey.

:00:31. > :00:49.More children get their hands on the Commonwealth Games b`ton

:00:50. > :00:52.In shock and disbelief ` that's how one man was left

:00:53. > :00:55.in Jersey when his 999 call wasn't dealt with efficiently.

:00:56. > :01:00.The first call wasn't answered and on another separate occ`sion

:01:01. > :01:02.his call was put through to the wrong emergency service.

:01:03. > :01:05.He wants the company JT, which runs the call centre,

:01:06. > :01:25.Lets cross live to our reporter regarding pay parking. We whll

:01:26. > :01:34.attempt to get that back for you very shortly. In other news today,

:01:35. > :01:39.shock and disbelief. That is how one man was left in jersey after he s

:01:40. > :02:16.999 call was not dealt with efficiently on two occasions.

:02:17. > :02:23.I was in shock and this leave. You have an emergency number to ring and

:02:24. > :02:28.when you ring a number like that you expect it to be answered quhckly and

:02:29. > :02:31.for the phone still to be rhnging after four minutes and 12 sdconds, I

:02:32. > :02:41.could not understand what w`s happening.

:02:42. > :02:44.And on another occasion, when he needed police help,

:02:45. > :02:46.he was put through to the Ambulance Service instead.

:02:47. > :02:49.All emergency calls in Jersdy come through here to JT operators.

:02:50. > :02:53.They answer 99.5 percent of calls within five seconds.

:02:54. > :02:56.80 percent of those calls aren't real

:02:57. > :03:04.emergencies, many are hoaxes, pocket dials and numbers dialled wrongly.

:03:05. > :03:12.I'm sorry I didn't mean emergency, I dialled back on a voicemahl.

:03:13. > :03:22.But how did a genuine emergdncy call slip through the systel?

:03:23. > :03:31.This was simply human error. It doesn't happen very often. We have

:03:32. > :03:35.about 30,000 999 calls a ye`r and those two are the only ones we are

:03:36. > :03:55.aware rot. We are sorry for the inconvenience cause. Let's return to

:03:56. > :04:13.our top story. Some decisions have been made about pay parking that is

:04:14. > :04:17.on the way. There will be bdtter facilities for pedestrians `nd buses

:04:18. > :04:21.will be free. I say free, btt you will have to pay for a card that

:04:22. > :04:25.will let you on and then after 8 months it will be looked at again.

:04:26. > :04:40.Paid parking is the one thing that has been decided today, despite a

:04:41. > :04:48.lot of opposition. A small group of people will have to pay arotnd 1300

:04:49. > :04:55.a year for long`term parking. One idea that is out is an annu`l ? 6

:04:56. > :05:02.charge for your parking block which you will have to use in short`term

:05:03. > :05:13.spaces. Was thrown out becatse of the work involved and if people had

:05:14. > :05:21.to revalidate it every year. It will take staff working for half a year

:05:22. > :05:25.to process it. Then everyond would have two renew their parking clock

:05:26. > :05:33.every year. Any decisions m`de today will not happen overnight. The

:05:34. > :05:41.environment Department still needs to go out to tender for a ndw bus

:05:42. > :05:46.service. We don't know when these changes will come into forcd. We

:05:47. > :05:50.will keep you up to date. Meanwhile, Jersey's ambulance

:05:51. > :05:52.service could soon follow the UK system by having a crew specifically

:05:53. > :05:55.for less urgent calls. The service is looking into trialing

:05:56. > :05:58.a non`emergency crew to easd the Ambulances responded to over 7, 00

:05:59. > :06:03.calls last year ` a rise of nearly A 42`year`old man

:06:04. > :06:07.from Guernsey has been sentdnced to eight years in prison for sdxual

:06:08. > :06:10.offences against two young girls. Wayne Martin Brouard was convicted

:06:11. > :06:13.in February for the indecent assault He's also been found guilty

:06:14. > :06:17.of four counts of taking indecent photographs of an

:06:18. > :06:20.11`year`old disabled girl in 20 1. An eight year custodial sentence was

:06:21. > :06:22.given alongside a five year extended sentence to be

:06:23. > :06:28.served after he leaves prison. To Catholics, he's

:06:29. > :06:31.the closest thing to God on Earth, but now the Pope is being asked to

:06:32. > :06:35.intervene in a Jersey plannhng row. Proposals to turn the Catholic

:06:36. > :06:37.church in Gorey Village into houses and parking has upset

:06:38. > :06:39.the local congregation. And one campaigner has turndd to

:06:40. > :06:56.the Vatican for help. It is not every day you write a

:06:57. > :07:00.letter to the Pope, but that is what Fraser Martin is doing. He has been

:07:01. > :07:06.campaigning to stop plans to demolish a disused church to make

:07:07. > :07:11.way for two houses with our king. I think as far as asking any darthly

:07:12. > :07:21.authority, I have gone to the highest. I have every confidence

:07:22. > :07:28.that I will get a response from the Pope because I feel that wh`t I am

:07:29. > :07:32.doing is right. This building in Gorey Village was originallx a

:07:33. > :07:37.chapel. It came a cinema and then in the 1950 is a catholic church, but

:07:38. > :07:45.it was close last year. Now the Catholic Church wants to turn the

:07:46. > :07:49.land into two houses. And it is redundant and it is being dhsposed

:07:50. > :07:55.of in the normal way. We ard seeking planning position to allow the sale

:07:56. > :08:02.to go ahead. As a charity, we have two get the best we can get from the

:08:03. > :08:08.land. The architect behind the plans does not think they are

:08:09. > :08:11.controversial and believes they will improve the village, but a petition

:08:12. > :08:22.against the plans is growing here. We have 159 signatures. People like

:08:23. > :08:28.Fraser thinks that the plans are out of touch. I don't think the plans

:08:29. > :08:34.will be passed. As I have s`id before, I would chain my self to the

:08:35. > :08:43.railings on the developers love in. `` chain myself. No decision has yet

:08:44. > :08:48.been made and as Fraser posted his letter to the Vatican, he hopes that

:08:49. > :08:55.the Pope will consider the future of this building.

:08:56. > :08:58.The Commonwealth Games Baton has continued it's tour of the Channel

:08:59. > :09:00.Islands today ` touring Guernsey, carried by school children.

:09:01. > :09:03.And children aren't the only ones who got to hold it.

:09:04. > :09:23.Mike Wilkins is live in Guernsey now with the star of the show itself.

:09:24. > :09:30.It is great to be holding this. Inside there is a secret message

:09:31. > :09:33.from her Majesty the Queen which will not be revealed until the

:09:34. > :09:39.opening ceremony. On the top is a granite gemstone which will be

:09:40. > :09:45.donated to the island on it departure. To release the gdmstone,

:09:46. > :09:58.you have two solved a puzzld. But what a date it has had.

:09:59. > :10:01.As the sun beat down on this small nation, children at

:10:02. > :10:04.Le Rondin School were about to become part of a huge movemdnt.

:10:05. > :10:07.They along with pupils from the Forest School were some

:10:08. > :10:17.of the lucky ones to welcomd the baton on its busy day.

:10:18. > :10:25.It is great that we will be able to hold it. It is amazing. It has been

:10:26. > :10:29.all over the world and Guernsey is a tiny island. We are going to get a

:10:30. > :10:35.hold it. It is incredible. Her Majesty would've been proud to

:10:36. > :10:38.see her baton ushered Shortly afterwards the baton was

:10:39. > :10:43.then on its way through the streets and lanes of Guernsey as its team

:10:44. > :10:46.kept to its jam`packed schedule And a jam`packed assembly w`s

:10:47. > :10:50.waiting for it on its next visit For many, the thought

:10:51. > :10:54.of holding something the Quden has The baton couldn't stay for long

:10:55. > :10:58.as it had plenty It was really great. I touched what

:10:59. > :11:06.the Queen has touched. The baton couldn't stay for long

:11:07. > :11:17.as it had plenty I have never been part of anything

:11:18. > :11:34.like this This week the focus is very much

:11:35. > :11:37.on the community and spreading the goodwill

:11:38. > :11:39.of the Commonwealth, but behind it So how will Guernsey do at the Games

:11:40. > :11:44.in Glasgow? Well BBC Radio Guernsey's Sports

:11:45. > :11:49.Reporter is Isla Blatchford. Guernsey's won six medals

:11:50. > :11:58.since joining the Commonwealth Games and it's been 20 years

:11:59. > :12:02.since Guernsey's last medal, Our one

:12:03. > :12:10.and only Gold was courtesy of the late Adrian Breton in Atckland

:12:11. > :12:13.in 1990, for the rapid fire pistol. And our last medal was a bronze

:12:14. > :12:17.in Canada in 1994 as Adrian once again performed well with

:12:18. > :12:19.his team`mate Graham Le Maitre. Our athletes go head to head with

:12:20. > :12:25.some of the best profession`ls in their sport so it's going to be

:12:26. > :12:30.tough in Glasgow, but some of them have already told

:12:31. > :12:33.me they'll be aiming for medals Lee Merrien is well known

:12:34. > :12:36.in athletics and even more so since representing Great Brhtain

:12:37. > :12:38.at the London Olympics. Glasgow will be Lee's fourth

:12:39. > :12:41.Commonwealth Games for Guernsey And his first marathon sincd London

:12:42. > :12:45.2012 following injury but he says he's fully fit

:12:46. > :12:48.and preparing for a month long Lee says if he gets

:12:49. > :12:53.his race right on the day hd could Chris Simpson represents Gudrnsey

:12:54. > :12:57.for the 4th time in squash. Currently ranked at 22 in the World,

:12:58. > :13:00.he's hoping to be This was simply human error. It

:13:01. > :13:05.doesn't happen very often. We have about 30,000 999 calls a ye`r and

:13:06. > :13:40.those two are the only ones we are no easy racing. That is just three

:13:41. > :13:49.members of the team. We havd 37 in nine sports, there could be more to

:13:50. > :13:58.add. Thank you. That is it le and the baton. Tomorrow it will be

:13:59. > :14:03.island hopping and we will follow it on its journey every step of the

:14:04. > :14:10.weighing, here on the BBC and I will hand it over to the team.

:14:11. > :14:18.Time to take a look at what weather will meet the baton.

:14:19. > :14:27.We continue with the fine wdather for the last official day of the

:14:28. > :14:33.Queen 's bat on relay. We do have the high`pressure continuing. ``

:14:34. > :14:41.Queens baton relay. Turning warm in the afternoon with light winds. It

:14:42. > :14:46.looks as if the fine weather will continue for at least the start of

:14:47. > :14:54.the weekend. It should be a find and to the day to night. Mostly clear

:14:55. > :14:57.skies and light winds. Mild night. Temperatures between nine and 1

:14:58. > :15:07.degrees. A fine and bright start tomorrow with plenty of sunshine.

:15:08. > :15:13.Perhaps something whether cloud passing through in the afternoon. A

:15:14. > :15:13.light to moderate breeze and it will feel warm in the sunshine whth highs

:15:14. > :15:41.of 18 Celsius. high water.

:15:42. > :15:47.For the surfers, possibilitx of three foot waves and condithons will

:15:48. > :15:57.be clean. So for the last official journey of the baton, it will be dry

:15:58. > :17:30.and fine as it start its jotrney. We will keep the sunshine with light to

:17:31. > :17:33.Kieron Davies from Braunton completed his hat trick competing

:17:34. > :17:39.As Spotlight's Dave Gibbins reports, he achieved this against sole

:17:40. > :17:43.of the strongest surfers from around the world.

:17:44. > :17:46.All Kieron Davies needs is ` board and a paddle.

:17:47. > :17:49.The 50`year`old has proved he's the best on the planet

:17:50. > :17:53.for the third year running. And it's no fluke.

:17:54. > :17:56.He devotes his time to his particular skill along the coasts

:17:57. > :18:03.You'll find Kieron at Croydd Bay most of the time.

:18:04. > :18:07.But on this occasion, he was at Sandymouth near Bude where the swell

:18:08. > :18:13.It's just a joy to catch prdtty much any wave you want.

:18:14. > :18:19.We get a lot of wind with that, a lot of choppy waves.

:18:20. > :18:22.But waveski allows you to m`ke the most of the conditions we get

:18:23. > :18:28.Waveskiing is different to Orthodox surfing.

:18:29. > :18:31.It's a larger board, which weighs 6kgs, or 13lbs,

:18:32. > :18:34.and it is for sitting on and catching a wave, instead of

:18:35. > :18:39.How difficult was it for yot in Durban?

:18:40. > :18:42.It wasn't too unlike Croyde Beach break.

:18:43. > :18:45.It wasn't as big as we'd hoped it would be, but we had high

:18:46. > :18:57.waves most days, and the water was thoroughly nice, 26 degrees

:18:58. > :19:00.So being able to surf in bo`rd shorts day and, day out,

:19:01. > :19:03.it helps the performance, r`ther than being wrapped in rubber.

:19:04. > :19:05.Now, you're a floor layer as a profession.

:19:06. > :19:08.How much time can you devotd to your sport?

:19:09. > :19:11.I plan all my surfing trips and everything around my customers.

:19:12. > :19:13.What comes first, waveski or your business?

:19:14. > :19:18.Well, Kieron out there belids his 50 years of age.

:19:19. > :19:21.He's king of waves, not only in Britain and Ireland

:19:22. > :19:31.Proving if you're fit enough, you're young enough.

:19:32. > :19:39.Now, a celebrity couple in Somerset have just welcomed

:19:40. > :19:44.The happy event was eagerly anticipated by thousands of people

:19:45. > :19:48.We've been following Boris and Brenda on Spotlight over

:19:49. > :19:59.They're a pair of barn owls and now the latest addition to the family is

:20:00. > :20:16.Call it the Outlook live alone at of the Big Brother house. `` c`ll it

:20:17. > :20:20.that each brother. Today I was taken to the secret location of the owl

:20:21. > :20:28.box. It's part of a project in the summer `` Somerset wildlife trust to

:20:29. > :20:33.boost declining population. This is as close as we get. We do w`nt to

:20:34. > :20:40.give away the location, and we don't want to disturb the balance house ``

:20:41. > :20:44.the barn owls. With the wonders of technology, we can actually see

:20:45. > :20:53.them. Yes, and what we have got here is the two adults. And therd you go,

:20:54. > :20:57.there is Burrowbridge, numbdr seven! It has become an Intdrnet

:20:58. > :21:05.sensation globally, as thesd website comments show. From GDP in

:21:06. > :21:08.Illinois... To two Reza, who, in the early hours is... Just saying what

:21:09. > :21:20.she sees. Schools like this one have `ll

:21:21. > :21:25.watched in class time. We try to check in every day. Familiar with,

:21:26. > :21:29.if you've the version if yot forget it, and you don't go back for a few

:21:30. > :21:34.days, you see such a differdnce in the owl at. Which is so exchting.

:21:35. > :21:38.The owl population of Britahn has halved. The birds are struggling to

:21:39. > :21:44.find food in areas like the Somerset Levels, underwater for so long.

:21:45. > :21:49.Putting up nesting boxes was a campaign started two years `go to

:21:50. > :21:53.try to reverse that decline. She's had a whopping seven aches. While

:21:54. > :21:58.it's impossible to draw these conclusions, people behind this

:21:59. > :22:05.project are encouraged. The big question that everybody is `sking is

:22:06. > :22:10.will all seven survive? I don't know the answer, but it is a bit like

:22:11. > :22:15.England winning the World Ctp. It's not impossible, they have a chance.

:22:16. > :22:19.And they seem to have an awful lot of people around the world rooting

:22:20. > :22:24.for them. Lovely story.

:22:25. > :22:30.We saw some lovely sunshine earlier, let's see if it will continte. How

:22:31. > :22:35.is it looking? We have a few more days of sunshine

:22:36. > :22:41.to come. Good evening. Some very warm temperatures in the region

:22:42. > :22:44.Tomorrow, we are going to sde some further spells of sunshine, a bit

:22:45. > :22:49.more cloud with a set times through the day tomorrow. But, desphte

:22:50. > :22:54.seeing more cloud, it is sthll going to be another warm day. So, we've

:22:55. > :22:58.got high pressure with this. There are some cloud to the north and

:22:59. > :23:01.west. But the high pressure is settling in place in the sotthern

:23:02. > :23:06.parts of the UK, keeping those were the fronts of a from us. We will see

:23:07. > :23:11.fine unsettled weather tomorrow a bit more cloud developing tomorrow.

:23:12. > :23:18.There will be mist and fog forming overnight. There is a simil`r story

:23:19. > :23:26.first aim to Friday with early mist and fog with some sunshine, then

:23:27. > :23:31.cloud building up. Possibly a bit more cloud through Sunday. So far

:23:32. > :23:36.today, we have seen some decent spells of sunshine, a littld bit of

:23:37. > :23:40.cold which has developed here, a fine end to the day. With the light

:23:41. > :23:48.winds, we will see some mist and fog patches forming. There is some risk

:23:49. > :23:56.of kill fog. In the north, ` bit more cloud arriving here. Locally,

:23:57. > :24:00.inland, a chilly night with temperatures down to five or six.

:24:01. > :24:07.First thing tomorrow, so early mist or fog. A bit of cloud towards the

:24:08. > :24:11.north coast. That should retreat into the afternoon. We could see a

:24:12. > :24:15.bit more cloud building up through the afternoon. It will still be warm

:24:16. > :24:19.with sunshine around. It will be another dry day tomorrow as well,

:24:20. > :24:25.and we will seek temperaturds reaching 19. Tomorrow, with the

:24:26. > :24:28.sunshine, the UV is going to be height are moderate, and we have

:24:29. > :24:35.moderate pollen levels, too. In the Isles of Scilly, mainly dry

:24:36. > :24:40.conditions, and we have light winds with us through the day tomorrow.

:24:41. > :24:51.Here are the times of high water for tomorrow at Plymouth.

:24:52. > :24:57.For the surface tomorrow, it will be generally quite clean conditions.

:24:58. > :25:05.For the North Coast, we're looking at 2`3 foot waves. Out at sda

:25:06. > :25:10.tomorrow, fair conditions whth some fog patches and just light `nd

:25:11. > :25:14.variable winds. And then thd fine conditions continue through Friday

:25:15. > :25:18.into Saturday as well. We whll see possibly an isolated shower by

:25:19. > :25:22.Saturday afternoon. These locally could be heavy but, again, we're

:25:23. > :25:28.looking at decent sunny spells. On Sunday, it bit of a question as to

:25:29. > :25:31.what happens through the dax, but we will see increasing amounts of cloud

:25:32. > :25:35.coming in through the West. It is coming in with the weather front,

:25:36. > :25:40.bringing some rain later in the day. Before then, it will continte with

:25:41. > :25:45.decent spells of sunshine. With fairly warm temperatures as well.

:25:46. > :25:51.Thank you, it is looking promising. That is all from us. I will be back

:25:52. > :25:53.with the late news at 10:30pm. Join us for that. And have a lovdly

:25:54. > :26:01.evening. Good night.
