:00:11. > :00:11.Good evening. Paid parking hs coming Gompertz, BB News.

:00:12. > :00:15.Good evening. Paid parking hs coming to Guernsey. It's one aspect of a

:00:16. > :00:18.new transport strategy that deputies approved today. It's all ailed at

:00:19. > :00:22.reducing private car use on the island, but it's taken up htndreds

:00:23. > :00:28.of hours of States debate already. Louise Walter reports. Pay `nd

:00:29. > :00:39.display will be the message in long`term car parks in future. A

:00:40. > :00:45.contentious issue, and one some deputies feared wouldn't go down

:00:46. > :00:49.well with the public. The m`in concern is very much related to the

:00:50. > :00:56.effects on a very small grotp of people. From where we are now, they

:00:57. > :00:58.would have to pay in the order of ?1300 a year for long`term parking.

:00:59. > :01:01.And the Environment Minister, whose department brought in the proposals,

:01:02. > :01:08.admits his own department isn't united on the issue. Yes thdre is a

:01:09. > :01:13.split in the department over this issue, but actually it seems to be

:01:14. > :01:17.mirrored within this assembly so I don't think there's any surprise

:01:18. > :01:23.there. I think some of the discussions we have had havd been as

:01:24. > :01:26.Frank and as honest and as differing interviews as we've had herd. Other

:01:27. > :01:29.measures voted on today include a CO2 tax, a first registration duty

:01:30. > :01:33.and a width tax for private motor cars. So what will the Statds do

:01:34. > :01:36.with all this extra income? They've agreed to pay for free buses for 18

:01:37. > :01:41.months and better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. Btt while

:01:42. > :01:44.the mindset of the political classes may be leaning towards a grdener

:01:45. > :01:49.future, persuading the publhc to get out of their cars may be more

:01:50. > :01:54.tricky. No timetable for action has yet been released.

:01:55. > :01:59.A 42`year`old man from Guernsey has been sentenced to eight years in

:02:00. > :02:02.prison for sexual offences `gainst two young girls. Wayne Marthn

:02:03. > :02:06.Brouard was convicted in February for the indecent assault of an

:02:07. > :02:09.eight`year`old girl in 1999. He s also been found guilty of four

:02:10. > :02:13.counts of taking indecent photographs of an 11`year`old

:02:14. > :02:15.disabled girl in 2011. An ehght`year custodial sentence was given

:02:16. > :02:17.alongside a five`year extended sentence, to be served after he

:02:18. > :02:23.leaves prison. A 71`year`old man is being treated

:02:24. > :02:28.in hospital after falling off a ladder at Guernsey's QE2 Marina St

:02:29. > :02:31.John Ambulance and Rescue s`y the incident happened just before

:02:32. > :02:35.5.00pm. Guernsey Fire and Rdscue were called in to help lift the man

:02:36. > :02:40.to safety. His injuries are described as not life threatening.

:02:41. > :02:44.In shock and disbelief ` th`t's how one man was left in Jersey when his

:02:45. > :02:46.999 call wasn't dealt with efficiently, not on just ond

:02:47. > :02:52.occasion, but two. He wants the company JT ` which runs the call

:02:53. > :03:01.centre ` to review its procddures. Luxmy Gopal reports. One nulber

:03:02. > :03:06.dialled three times. You're sort of hope if you find yourself in an

:03:07. > :03:11.emergency. But the sandy, hhs hopes faded when his 84`year`old father

:03:12. > :03:16.had a fall and his 999 call for an ambulance wasn't and said. He

:03:17. > :03:23.eventually got help by dialling police headquarters. It was one of

:03:24. > :03:30.shock and disbelief. You di`l an emergency number and you expected to

:03:31. > :03:34.be answered fairly quickly. For the phone to still be ringing after four

:03:35. > :03:40.minutes and 12 seconds I just couldn't understand what was

:03:41. > :03:43.happening. And, on another occasion, when he needed police help he was

:03:44. > :03:50.put through to the ambulancd service instead. When you put through to the

:03:51. > :03:57.wrong service it is only gohng to hold things up. All emergency calls

:03:58. > :04:02.in Jersey come through here, too JT operators. They receive abott 6 0

:04:03. > :04:06.calls a week. They answer 98.5% of calls within five seconds. 80% of

:04:07. > :04:19.those calls aren't real emergencies. Many are hoaxes.

:04:20. > :04:24.Emergency, which service pldase But how did a genuine emergency call

:04:25. > :04:28.slip through the system this was simply a human error. It's one of

:04:29. > :04:33.those that doesn't happen vdry often. We have about 30,000 calls a

:04:34. > :04:42.year and that is the only one we are where. We are very sorry and

:04:43. > :04:48.apologetic. JT have recentlx reached view their system to prevent this

:04:49. > :04:50.happening again, so sandy and anyone else who dials nine and I won't be

:04:51. > :04:57.on hold. The Pope is being asked to lend his

:04:58. > :05:00.support to a campaign against a disused Catholic Church in Gorey

:05:01. > :05:03.Village being knocked down for houses. Fraser Martin, who lives

:05:04. > :05:05.nearby, has written to the Vatican because he's so upset by thd

:05:06. > :05:09.proposals. More than 100 islanders have signed a petition against the

:05:10. > :05:12.development. Mr Martin says if the site has to be developed, hd wants

:05:13. > :05:18.it turned into a Christian outreach centre instead. I think as far as

:05:19. > :05:23.asking any earthly authoritx, I ve gone to the highest level. H'm about

:05:24. > :05:26.to go with that letter to the highest I can. I have every

:05:27. > :05:31.confidence that I will get ` response from the Pope. Bec`use I

:05:32. > :05:35.feel that what I'm doing is right. A Jersey woman has set a new record

:05:36. > :05:38.by becoming the first woman in the Channel Islands to donate 100 pints

:05:39. > :05:41.of blood. Jean McLaughlin, who's one of the oldest donors registdred

:05:42. > :05:44.here, reached the milestone today. Since she started giving blood in

:05:45. > :05:48.1962, she's donated enough to fill the average body ten times. She says

:05:49. > :05:53.she feels very humble and ddlighted and hopes her example will hnspire

:05:54. > :06:04.others. It's very important because I'd achieved so much. And sorry To

:06:05. > :06:06.give blood is very important. We all need it and the mod blood donors we

:06:07. > :06:09.have the better. The Queen's baton relay has visited

:06:10. > :06:12.six Guernsey schools today. The baton carries a message frol the

:06:13. > :06:16.Queen to be taken to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later

:06:17. > :06:22.this summer. Tomorrow it gods to Alderney, Herm and Sark..

:06:23. > :06:28.That's it from me tonight. Dmily's next with the Weather and the

:06:29. > :06:36.national forecast follows hdr. Goodnight. It looks like fine

:06:37. > :06:40.weather for the last offici`l day of the Queens Baton Relay tomorrow We

:06:41. > :06:46.are going to keep the fine conditions for the rest the week.

:06:47. > :06:51.Tonight, it is looking quitd quiet with mainly clear skies and light

:06:52. > :06:59.winds. The dry night and not too cold either. First thing tolorrow,

:07:00. > :07:03.it is set to be a fine start to the day with plenty of sunshine in the

:07:04. > :07:08.morning. Perhaps some fair weather cloud passing through in thd

:07:09. > :07:12.afternoon. Overall, it should be quite warm in the sunshine. With

:07:13. > :07:20.highs of 18 degrees. The fine weather continues with yet lore

:07:21. > :07:23.sunshine on Friday and on S`turday. Light to moderate winds and

:07:24. > :07:30.temperatures up to 17 or 18 degrees. On Sunday, a bit of

:07:31. > :07:31.uncertainty. Here's the sumlary for tomorrow.

:07:32. > :07:40.see 21 or so. We keep that going right until the weekend. Here's the

:07:41. > :07:45.outlook. Good evening. Mother nature was kind to us today, sunny skies,

:07:46. > :07:48.the birds and bees were out but not everywhere because one or two places

:07:49. > :07:51.where a little on the cloudy side. For example, here on a satellite

:07:52. > :07:57.picture, Northern Ireland and Scotland, increasing cloud. To the

:07:58. > :08:02.south, you can see the vast majority of the country, Wales and England,

:08:03. > :08:07.scattered cloud, so lots of find weather. We will turn the heat up in

:08:08. > :08:12.the next few days but in terms of the sunshine tomorrow, you might be

:08:13. > :08:18.surprised that it's more cloudy compared to what we had today. Let's

:08:19. > :08:22.look at the details. Tonight, from Wales, the Midlands, and

:08:23. > :08:26.Lincolnshire, they will get quite chilly tonight, maybe three degrees

:08:27. > :08:32.in the countryside. In the city centre is it always a bit warmer. In

:08:33. > :08:38.Scotland, it will stay fairly damp tonight with mist and murky weather.

:08:39. > :08:41.Misty in one or two other places but starting sunny in the south and

:08:42. > :08:43.then, through the morning and afternoon, it will turn quite

:08:44. > :08:44.cloudy. However,
