:00:18. > :00:22.Tripoli, the Guernsey and lockdown in Libya after violent clashes over

:00:23. > :00:29.the weekend. I spent the majority of today putting together an evacuation

:00:30. > :00:34.plan. Jersey's St John's Ambulance appeals for more help to cover the

:00:35. > :00:40.Island games. If there is no first aid cover, it will draw on resources

:00:41. > :00:45.from the Ambulance Service. It comes as the application window for games

:00:46. > :00:51.makers closes early due to ` swell in volunteers. Also tonight. The

:00:52. > :00:54.board has been smashed up... The life`saving equipment vandalised

:00:55. > :01:04.just hours after a surfer w`s rescued at sea.

:01:05. > :01:07.A Guernsey man is in lockdown in the Libya, because of the deterhorating

:01:08. > :01:10.Ben Remfrey is trapped in the capitol Tripoli,

:01:11. > :01:13.after a string of violent clashes over the weekend prompted

:01:14. > :01:18.He was working in the country to destroy and clear

:01:19. > :01:22.ammunition and is now coming up with an evacuation plan for his staff.

:01:23. > :01:31.A familiar sound here in recent days.

:01:32. > :01:34.As fighting has spread across the Libyan city of Tripoli, following

:01:35. > :01:37.an attack at the weekend on the country's interim parli`ment.

:01:38. > :01:40.Described as some of the worst violence seen here in recent years.

:01:41. > :01:42.And caught up in it, local man Ben Remfrey,

:01:43. > :01:57.who's working in the Saharan desert locating and clearing ammunhtion.

:01:58. > :02:05.Gaddafi spent 42 years colldcting ammunition and weapons and having

:02:06. > :02:12.storage area is built. The northern Sahara is one and munitions depot.

:02:13. > :02:18.Can you hear and see much wdre you are now? I can, yeah. The fhghting

:02:19. > :02:24.has been going backwards and forwards around Tripoli. It has its

:02:25. > :02:30.peaks and troughs. One moment, it is fairly quiet. It was eerily quiet

:02:31. > :02:37.this morning. It all kicked off again. Are you safe at the loment? I

:02:38. > :02:42.am the only one in Tripoli. The villa is pretty secure. I al fairly

:02:43. > :02:45.happy. I spent the majority of today putting together an evacuathon plan

:02:46. > :02:50.if needed, I will evacuate ly staff. That's a plan he thinks he'll

:02:51. > :02:54.put into action tomorrow. After which Ben will also look to

:02:55. > :02:57.leave Tripoli temporarily The two men accused

:02:58. > :03:03.of defrauding the States of Guernsey out of ?2.6 million have re`appeared

:03:04. > :03:06.at Southwark Crown Court. Fifty`six year`old

:03:07. > :03:08.John Anthony Woodhatch from Essex and 44`year`old Adrian Taylor

:03:09. > :03:10.from Kent face charges of conspiracy They have been bailed again

:03:11. > :03:15.and will re`appear on 25th June A further witness has given evidence

:03:16. > :03:26.in the trial of Richard de Wit, the man accused of murdering

:03:27. > :03:28.Sarah Groves twenty`four year old Guernsdy woman

:03:29. > :03:33.was stabbed to death The trial's been plagued

:03:34. > :03:38.by delays with today's witndss, Muhammad Shalla, being just

:03:39. > :03:52.the 12th on a list of 40 witnesses. Outside help will be needed

:03:53. > :03:55.if the St John Ambulance in Jersey don't recruit more volunteers ahead

:03:56. > :03:58.of the Island Games next ye`r. They need to double the amotnt

:03:59. > :04:02.of first aiders they currently have But they haven't had enough interest

:04:03. > :04:05.so far, so may need to fly in members

:04:06. > :04:21.from Guernsey and the UK whhch will The Island games. Competitors

:04:22. > :04:25.suffered heat exhaustion and some had to be stretchered off the track

:04:26. > :04:30.last year. If people need hdlp next summer, St John's Ambulance will be

:04:31. > :04:34.providing first aid. Although they are prepared, there is not dnough of

:04:35. > :04:39.them. They have 50 members but need to double that to cover the 400

:04:40. > :04:46.people attending the games. It will stretch us. That is why we need more

:04:47. > :04:50.members. We get support frol the Ambulance Service and the bhg thing

:04:51. > :04:54.is to consider, with the Island games if there is not any fhrst aid

:04:55. > :04:56.cover, it will draw on thred sources from the Ambulance Service.

:04:57. > :04:59.So that's why they are despdrate to recruit enough volunteers.

:05:00. > :05:02.But if they can't, they havd to seek help from overseas.

:05:03. > :05:05.The St John volunteers are tsed to helping each other out,

:05:06. > :05:17.When we help the Island gamds here we have the same problems. @ big

:05:18. > :05:21.event like that needs a large number of volunteers. A number of people

:05:22. > :05:29.from Jersey came here. Some first aid training will be

:05:30. > :05:31.offered to Gamesmakers, but it's not the same depth as

:05:32. > :05:42.the nine months of training offered The level of training that they will

:05:43. > :05:47.give is much higher than thd level that we are planning for our

:05:48. > :05:53.Gamesmakers. As a consequence, it will be a legacy item that people

:05:54. > :05:55.can take away and other events can benefit from.

:05:56. > :05:58.The recruitment for Gamesmakers has been so successful, the application

:05:59. > :06:03.St John Ambulance need some of that volunteering spirit to head

:06:04. > :06:07.People have until September before the opportunity

:06:08. > :06:15.The UK government won't be funding a ten million pound upgrade to

:06:16. > :06:18.Weymouth's harbour, despite an appeal from the town's MP.

:06:19. > :06:21.Richard Drax met with the Transport Minister Stephen Hammond earlier

:06:22. > :06:24.today, where he was told thdy don't have the money to fund the tpgrade.

:06:25. > :06:27.This means that if Condor does buy a new "Trimaran"

:06:28. > :06:30.vessel, it's likely that it won t fit into Weymouth's harbour, forcing

:06:31. > :06:39.travellers to and from Jersdy to use Poole or Portsmouth instead.

:06:40. > :06:46.I believe it can get into Wdymouth but there are restrictions hn bad

:06:47. > :06:50.weather. It is important, from the perspective of Condor at th`t

:06:51. > :06:53.Weymouth seek to make changds to be able to facilitate it. I am hopeful

:06:54. > :06:57.that Weymouth will find a solution. If that is not the case, I think

:06:58. > :07:00.there is a workaround. A piece of rescue equipment

:07:01. > :07:03.on Jersey's West coast has been so badly damaged it can no longer

:07:04. > :07:06.be used. The surf rescue board, kept publicly

:07:07. > :07:09.available beside a restaurant was The same evening, a surfer had to

:07:10. > :07:23.be rescued after getting into This rescue board will no longer be

:07:24. > :07:29.available at this beach. It was useful because it had the btoyancy

:07:30. > :07:33.to carry two people, essenthal in an emergency. This board has bden

:07:34. > :07:37.available here at the beach for decades, to help anyone who gets

:07:38. > :07:41.into difficulty in the water. After it was badly damaged on Friday

:07:42. > :07:49.night, it is no longer going to be in the use and at a cost of ?14 0, a

:07:50. > :07:53.replacement is unlikely. Earlier in the evening, lifeguards helped

:07:54. > :07:57.rescue a surfer who had been slammed against the sea wall after getting

:07:58. > :08:02.cut off from the beach by a high tide. He was pulled to safety by a

:08:03. > :08:07.lifeguard who went into the water to help at the surfer got tangled in

:08:08. > :08:12.help. The beach is known to be dangerous at high tide and the beach

:08:13. > :08:20.lifeguard say surfers and swimmers have to respect the tides. We have a

:08:21. > :08:23.big sea wall which runs the length of beach. With those big tides and a

:08:24. > :08:30.little bit of swell behind ht, we find people get caught out, leaving

:08:31. > :08:35.the water too late, so all was check the timetables. Last year, the

:08:36. > :08:39.lifeguard patrols had their busiest year, dealing with 355 incident and

:08:40. > :08:45.helping nearly 500 people. Islanders in Guernsey are bding

:08:46. > :08:48.urged to consider becoming foster parents as there's an urgent need

:08:49. > :08:51.for placements in the Bailiwick There are only thirty foster

:08:52. > :08:53.families in the island at the moment and HSSD are joining a

:08:54. > :08:57.national campaign to recruit more. The department say those who do

:08:58. > :09:04.step up are doing vital work. Giant jellyfish are being

:09:05. > :09:18.spotted all over the south west It's a Happy Birthday for

:09:19. > :09:23.Guernsey's Heather Watson as she moves back into the World Top

:09:24. > :09:26.100 tennis players. Watson celebrates her 22nd birthday

:09:27. > :09:29.today after winning the Prague Open. Heather beat Anna Schmiedlova in

:09:30. > :09:32.straight sets to claim her second The victory puts Watson at 82 in the

:09:33. > :09:38.world rankings and British Number 2 She'll now enter the qualifxing

:09:39. > :09:59.rounds of the French Open. Our reporter took these pictures on

:10:00. > :10:06.the West Coast. It looks like a summer's day. I managed to get into

:10:07. > :10:11.the water myself. Look at those pictures. Stunning. David, H got

:10:12. > :10:17.into the water, the shorts were on and that is why I think you have

:10:18. > :10:21.some thunder behind you. Sole people say that our summers is thrde fine

:10:22. > :10:29.days followed by a thunderstorm and it is not far off that. There are

:10:30. > :10:36.some thunderstorms ahead. You may see a flash of lightning in the

:10:37. > :10:40.distance. More across the wdstern parts of Guernsey. For this week and

:10:41. > :10:46.tomorrow, it is a humid and warm feel, but not dry, there is the risk

:10:47. > :10:50.of thundery showers, that rhsk continues this week, perhaps the

:10:51. > :10:54.risk highest as we move into Thursday and we see a new b`nd of

:10:55. > :10:58.showery rain moves in from the south. We have this line of thundery

:10:59. > :11:05.showers, which stretches not just from parts of Spain and Portugal,

:11:06. > :11:08.but we have more showers wr`pped around an area of low presstre and

:11:09. > :11:12.it is this area of low pressure we will keep for the rest of this

:11:13. > :11:20.week. Weather resistant to the east of us will bring the risk of

:11:21. > :11:25.showers, but more showers on Wednesday. On Wednesday, it will go

:11:26. > :11:29.downhill. There are the showers we have seen in the last few hours

:11:30. > :11:36.There are some more showers to come this evening. For the rest of us,

:11:37. > :11:39.some dry weather before these showers reappear. Especiallx

:11:40. > :11:45.tomorrow morning, overnight temperatures will be 13 degrees

:11:46. > :11:50.Tomorrow will see plenty of shower activity. You can see towards the

:11:51. > :11:53.end of the afternoon, some pleasant sunshine to enjoy and that will lift

:11:54. > :12:08.temperatures up to around 17 degrees. That is the coastal waters

:12:09. > :12:13.forecast. Times of high watdr.. Not great deal for our servers, up to

:12:14. > :12:19.about perhaps two feet if they are lucky. The outlook is bright for

:12:20. > :12:23.Wednesday morning. The showdrs will get going and I continued rhsk of

:12:24. > :12:29.thundery showers into Thursday and Friday. Not all of the time, there

:12:30. > :12:36.will be some sunshine. Have a good evening. I think I have cursed the

:12:37. > :12:47.weather with my shorts. That is it for now.

:12:48. > :12:53.The project stalled during the recession and thd plans

:12:54. > :12:57.They include 1,500 homes and a school in the West Carclaze area.

:12:58. > :13:02.A public consultation will be launched next month.

:13:03. > :13:06.It is a case of prioritising what we need to deliver.

:13:07. > :13:10.It was one of the first sitds we had on our priority.

:13:11. > :13:13.It was a gateway to the St @ustell area.

:13:14. > :13:16.So it was very high on our list of ones to achieve.

:13:17. > :13:18.But the other sites are still there.

:13:19. > :13:21.They're still available and waiting to be brought forward.

:13:22. > :13:25.But you can't do all of thel at the same time.

:13:26. > :13:29.We're marking a major milestone for the region's lighthouses.

:13:30. > :13:32.Plus, if you go down to the woods today you may be surprised

:13:33. > :13:39.And lurking in the waters off our coast ` a close encounter

:13:40. > :13:50.Now not many institutions c`n boast five centuries of continuous

:13:51. > :13:52.service, but tomorrow Trinity House, the lighthouse authority for England

:13:53. > :13:58.The safety of shipping and the well being

:13:59. > :14:01.of seafarers has been at thd heart of its role from the beginnhng.

:14:02. > :14:04.In the first of two special reports, David has been looking

:14:05. > :14:16.Variable four, becoming south eastly.

:14:17. > :14:26.Since Trinity House first started on the the River Thames hundreds

:14:27. > :14:30.of years ago, its main role has been the safety at sea for sailors

:14:31. > :14:36.and nowhere is more dangerots than the coast of Cornwall.

:14:37. > :14:43.Henry VIII granted a Royal Charter to the Gild

:14:44. > :14:45.of Mariners called the Holy Trinity in 1514.

:14:46. > :14:50.Their job was to provide pilots on the River Thames.

:14:51. > :14:55.By 1566, the first beacons signs and marks for the sea were drected,

:14:56. > :14:59.allowing sailors to recognise headlands and help them navhgate.

:15:00. > :15:02.40 years later, Trinity House became the pilot authority all over

:15:03. > :15:09.the country, including the lajor ports in the south of England.

:15:10. > :15:17.The first offshore lighthouse in Europe was built

:15:18. > :15:20.by Henry Winstanley in 1698 on the Edison reef.

:15:21. > :15:23.Two more lighthouses were btilt on the reef, but they were still

:15:24. > :15:26.Triniy House took over Smeaton's Tower and by by 1836 openership

:15:27. > :15:33.Devon and Cornwall continued to pioneer the technology.

:15:34. > :15:39.The first compressed air fog horn was installed near Padstow

:15:40. > :15:43.The idea being a ship at se` in fog could hear the horn `nd

:15:44. > :15:47.from its sound recognise which headland it was close to.

:15:48. > :15:51.The flashing lights operated in the same way, so at night sailors

:15:52. > :15:55.could recognise which head land or rock they could see

:15:56. > :16:03.Trinity House was busy throtgh the war years as well, lighting

:16:04. > :16:10.For the D`Day landings in 1844, the corporation marked the safe route

:16:11. > :16:15.across the channel using buoys, marking the safe path to Normandy.

:16:16. > :16:25.115 of their men lost their lives in this conflict.

:16:26. > :16:28.And there will be more on the work of Trinity Housd

:16:29. > :16:31.in Spotlight tomorrow and of course David will be herd later

:16:32. > :16:36.Exeter Chiefs and England whng Jack Nowell is

:16:37. > :16:39.among the contenders for thd Young Rugby Player of the Year aw`rd.

:16:40. > :16:43.21`year`old Nowell from Newlyn broke into the Dngland

:16:44. > :16:47.senior team this year and played in all five of their Six Nations'

:16:48. > :16:51.Nowell is one of six players named for the award which whll

:16:52. > :16:59.The Cornwall county rugby tdam is one step away from making a second

:17:00. > :17:02.successive appearance at Twhckenham in the Bill Beaumont Cup Final. They

:17:03. > :17:06.face a winner`takes`all tie at Hertfordshire this Saturday to

:17:07. > :17:10.determine who goes to rugby's headquarters. The Duchy beat

:17:11. > :17:13.Gloucestershire by 33`27 at Camborne. Redruth wing Tom Notman

:17:14. > :17:17.scored two of Cornwall's trhes as they outscored their opponents by

:17:18. > :17:25.10 emerging sculptors have been chosen as finalists in a National

:17:26. > :17:30.Their work will be on show at Broomhill near Barnstapld

:17:31. > :17:36.The summer exhibition attracts visitors from far and wide

:17:37. > :17:39.and they're even allowed to help judges chose a winner.

:17:40. > :17:44.Spotlight's North Devon reporter, Andrea Ormsby, has the storx.

:17:45. > :17:59.Sean is one of ten sculptors chosen to be a finalist in the Broomhill

:18:00. > :18:05.prize. It is such a great opportunity. People recognise the

:18:06. > :18:11.sculpture prize and it is ilportant for the emerging artists. Today he

:18:12. > :18:16.is installing his work based on the famous painting of Ophelia. Like in

:18:17. > :18:21.the painting, you will see the water coming up to by where the e`rs are

:18:22. > :18:25.and some of the chest will show and the hands. And the knees and feet

:18:26. > :18:37.and the rest of it will be just sitting under the water. Broomhill's

:18:38. > :18:42.garden holds around 350 sculptures. We are from Lancashire and very

:18:43. > :18:47.interested in the arts. I'm an author, Cathy is a gardener. And we

:18:48. > :18:54.are on holiday. We wanted to see this place. We have seen others up

:18:55. > :18:58.north near Sheffield and Yorkshire. And this is up with them if not

:18:59. > :19:04.better. The competition is the idea of the owner of Broomhill. H don't

:19:05. > :19:10.know where the passion comes from, but I started collecting art and set

:19:11. > :19:18.up a gallery in Holland and ran that for ten years and then decided to do

:19:19. > :19:23.more with sculpture. I ended up in Devon and founded Broomhill in

:19:24. > :19:32.grew it into a national sculpture park. The competition startdd five

:19:33. > :19:35.years ago as a challenge for new UK`based artists. Judges will choose

:19:36. > :19:40.the top prize and visitors get to vote for the runner up. The

:19:41. > :19:42.sculptures will be on show from June and the winners announced in

:19:43. > :19:50.October. There's been an invasion all

:19:51. > :19:53.along the South coast of Devon Strange creatures have been seen

:19:54. > :19:56.at sea, on the beaches Barrel jelly fish have been spotted

:19:57. > :20:01.in huge numbers over the wedkend. Spotlights David George has

:20:02. > :20:10.been finding out more. They are monsters. The thick dome

:20:11. > :20:16.with be the size of a dustbhn lid across with the unusual tentacles

:20:17. > :20:23.hanging down as much as six feet. It is the barrel or dustbin jellyfish.

:20:24. > :20:29.They're the largest of our native jellyfish and can be up to 80

:20:30. > :20:34.centimetres in width and wehgh up to 20 kilos and possibly more. When you

:20:35. > :20:40.spot one it is alarming, yes. They're being seen in huge numbers.

:20:41. > :20:47.paraglider. Each of the dots is a paraglider. Each of the dots is a

:20:48. > :20:52.jellyfish. He said there was hundreds. Anna found one washed up

:20:53. > :20:58.in a creek near Truro and wd filmed one in a river. Not your normal

:20:59. > :21:05.skwij of jelly that I yo sed on the beach. Is in giant of the jdllyfish

:21:06. > :21:11.world lives off one of the sea's smallest creatures. They have been

:21:12. > :21:18.described as the basking sh`rks of the jellyfish world, they jtst

:21:19. > :21:24.feeding on plankton and catch it with their tentacles that they have

:21:25. > :21:31.that have stinging cells. They're only feeding on tiny animals.

:21:32. > :21:38.Wildlife watchers hope one of the the fish's pret or thes will soon be

:21:39. > :21:44.seen. One of the biggest prddators are leather`backed turtles. We get

:21:45. > :21:49.them but they're rare. But the fact they mainly feed on the jellyfish

:21:50. > :21:54.means they could come as well. The jellyfish has a sting, but hn its

:21:55. > :22:04.case it is not strong enough to penetrate human skin. So to us, it

:22:05. > :22:10.is harmless. I would still be scared. I wouldn't want to dncounter

:22:11. > :22:13.one swimming. Now the weathdr and if they were attracted by the hot

:22:14. > :22:20.weather. I guess they will be going soon. Well, I don't think wd will

:22:21. > :22:25.lose the warmth. But it had to change. Some people describd our

:22:26. > :22:29.summer as three fine days followed by the thunder storm and wif had

:22:30. > :22:35.some showers today. And for the week ahead it is warm and humid. But

:22:36. > :22:41.there is still the risk of thundery showers. This line of cloud is

:22:42. > :22:46.giving some showers through the channel. And some thunder storms in

:22:47. > :22:50.Somerset, particularly the Somerset levels. Some more to come l`ter on

:22:51. > :22:54.tonight. The area of high pressure that gave us such nice weather at

:22:55. > :22:58.the weekend has gone. It is low pressure and it will be arotnd all

:22:59. > :23:03.week. One system moving to the north of us through the day tomorrow means

:23:04. > :23:08.the showers in the morning `re replaced by brighter condithons in

:23:09. > :23:12.the afternoon. And more low pressure will move in on Wednesday. Wednesday
