:08:10. > :08:12.day. An exciting day
:08:13. > :08:14.for the one show's Mike Dilger, but for Jersey, the green lhzard is
:08:15. > :08:17.something of the norm. And one of the places these green
:08:18. > 1:49:48lizards have decided to set up home is here, in Penny Fogarty's
1:49:49 > 1:49:48back garden in St Brelade. Feared by some,
1:49:49 > 1:49:48misunderstood by others, the green lizard isn't the world's
1:49:49 > 1:49:48most favourite animal, but for Penny it's one of her favourites `nd she
1:49:49 > 1:49:48literally has about 10 of them. They are quite territorial `nd they
1:49:49 > 1:49:48like their sunbathing spots. I know there is one having a Sundaxs at the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48moment in the corner here. Xes, she is there. Shall we have a look?
1:49:49 > 1:49:48The day Penny found her first lizard was a happy one for Penny.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Excitement. They are so pretty. The mail has this lovely blue on his
1:49:49 > 1:49:48neck but the female is still beautiful but not as beautiful as
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the mail. They are so used to me now they hardly run away if you go past
1:49:49 > 1:49:48them. So why have the lizards
1:49:49 > 1:49:48chosen to live with Penny? Penny has a good garden bec`use she
1:49:49 > 1:49:48is a wildlife garden so she can attract a lot of our rare and unique
1:49:49 > 1:49:48species and the more people that can do the things that Penny dods the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48better. Now nature groups
1:49:49 > 1:49:48in the Island are encouraging people to act like Penny, leave wild areas
1:49:49 > 1:49:48in their gardens and use as little poison as possibld in the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48hope that Jersey's rare wild life And you can see more on the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48green lizards in The One Show starting here on BBC One in
1:49:49 > 1:49:48about 15 minutes' time. Now time for the weather. Today was
1:49:49 > 1:49:48horrible, when it get any bdtter? Yes, it was horrible with hdavy
1:49:49 > 1:49:48showers and we will have more of those tomorrow. There should be
1:49:49 > 1:49:48fewer than perhaps today but there is a thunder risk. If we take a look
1:49:49 > 1:49:48at the satellite picture yot can see some clumps of Cloud circul`ting
1:49:49 > 1:49:48around and they are indicathng where we are seeing the heaviest of those
1:49:49 > 1:49:48showers. It is an issue for everybody. Thanks to this area of
1:49:49 > 1:49:48low pressure that is dominating our web today and tomorrow and hnto the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48beginning of the weekend. Thereafter it will get a bit better. As you can
1:49:49 > 1:49:48see at the moment there is ` clump of showers across us. They `re quite
1:49:49 > 1:49:48intense in places and have brought rumbles of thunder and we sde more
1:49:49 > 1:49:48of the same tonight. There will be persistent spells of rain at times.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Clear spells around but a mhld picture and it stays in double
1:49:49 > 1:49:48figures. We start tomorrow with a risk of showers from the st`rt. It
1:49:49 > 1:49:48could be that we see more in the way of brightness coming through but the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48detail for tomorrow will be difficult to pin down and I could
1:49:49 > 1:49:48not rule out heavy thundery showers. They will definitely be in the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48vicinity. We could see high is getting up to 16 or 17. Our coastal
1:49:49 > 1:49:48waters forecast. These are not grey conditions for
1:49:49 > 1:49:48our surfers and the waves whll be pretty small. The outlook tomorrow
1:49:49 > 1:49:48brings a risk of heavy showdrs and it continues on Saturday. Bx Sunday
1:49:49 > 1:49:48we could see fewer showers but on bank holiday Monday it will be an
1:49:49 > 1:49:48improving story with it being Briar `` drier and brighter with some
1:49:49 > 1:49:48sunshine. Unsettled now but it will get better.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48That is good to hear. That hs it for now. I will be back with thd
1:49:49 > 1:49:48headlines at 8pm and the News at ten p.m.. I will hand you over shortly
1:49:49 > 1:49:48to Justin and Natalie and the team over at the Devon County show. Good
1:49:49 > 1:49:48night. youngest in the class by a long way,
1:49:49 > 1:49:48so she wants to go back to her mum and have her breakfast now. Although
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Devon farming and food at the heart of the show there is always some way
1:49:49 > 1:49:48`` something that everyone with traders and exhibitors coming far
1:49:49 > 1:49:48and wide. Absolutely, from pasty makers do ice cream sellers to hog
1:49:49 > 1:49:48roast. I'm always thinking of food. Something smells gorgeous though.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Don't forget the animals, you got poultry, pigs and Andrea has been
1:49:49 > 1:49:48out and about to see what she can find.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Showtime, daytime at the Devon County show, and the stars `re in
1:49:49 > 1:49:48make`up. Basically I am scrtbbing up the sheep to make them a nice square
1:49:49 > 1:49:48shape and presentable for the judge so when he comes along he won't get
1:49:49 > 1:49:48his hands dirty. This is a pedigree South Devon bull from Newqu`y in
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Cornwall. And we are just gdtting him ready to go to the ring. It will
1:49:49 > 1:49:48be just taking him outside, giving him a brush and a wash and he will
1:49:49 > 1:49:48hopefully look nice in the ring Champion on the sheep lines, so that
1:49:49 > 1:49:48made my day now. This is all the very best of Devon rural life, in
1:49:49 > 1:49:48rain and shine. This year the weather hasn't put us off at all,
1:49:49 > 1:49:48and it's much more enjoyabld. When it is raining, there aren't so many
1:49:49 > 1:49:48people around and it's not jostling, and you can see everything without
1:49:49 > 1:49:48any hassle. So to my mind, rain doesn't put me off at all. Ht
1:49:49 > 1:49:48started off with a typical rain but now we've got the sun, and let's
1:49:49 > 1:49:48hope it lasts for the rest of the day.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Over the next three days close to 100,000 people are expected to come
1:49:49 > 1:49:48to the Devon County show. Animals truly are at the he`rt of
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the Devon County show, and H'm joined by someone who is showing the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48animals and looking after them and someone who is in charge of a
1:49:49 > 1:49:48particular breed. Steve is here What have we here? This is ` young
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Angora goat born in Februarx, a young boy, so hopefully next year he
1:49:49 > 1:49:48will be coming to the show hn a bigger form. He has lovely lohair
1:49:49 > 1:49:48growing on him. What is the demand for mohair at the moment? The demand
1:49:49 > 1:49:48is really good throughout the world and prices are buoyant. There's a
1:49:49 > 1:49:48lot of manufacturers in Britain wanting British mohair. Things are
1:49:49 > 1:49:48looking up. Claire, you are kept very busy at the show as ond of the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48vets. I work as part of a tdam of vets who provide 24`hour cover from
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the moment the animals enter. We are responsible for everything from
1:49:49 > 1:49:48rabbits, guinea pigs, chickdns, through to horses, sheep and goats.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48What are the most unusual things you have had to deal with. Therd is a
1:49:49 > 1:49:48his ear open last year and we stick his ear open last year and we stick
1:49:49 > 1:49:48it back together. Six sheep, and the ball did get loose in the p`rade,
1:49:49 > 1:49:48and a good team of stewards and vets managed to recapture the ball.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Caroline, you are showing one of your pigs. Tell us about wonder She
1:49:49 > 1:49:48is a middle white pig, and they are all the minority breeds herd. She's
1:49:49 > 1:49:48nearly two years old and is as big as she is likely to get. Shd is due
1:49:49 > 1:49:48to have another litter in Jtly but we have pigs that were born in
1:49:49 > 1:49:48January right through to thd seniors. She has gone for Rwanda by
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the look of it. She's a little bit hot and board. She took the breed
1:49:49 > 1:49:48champion this morning, so she's being a bit of a diva. The trouble
1:49:49 > 1:49:48with sheep, pigs, cattle, btt particularly pigs, we were trying to
1:49:49 > 1:49:48train pigs to walk with the stick, because the only way is that to
1:49:49 > 1:49:48control them. Sometimes it works and it's wonderful, and other thmes she
1:49:49 > 1:49:48has decided she doesn't want to join us. I hope you all enjoy thd show.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Thank you all three of you for joining us. Thank you. Some fabulous
1:49:49 > 1:49:48stalwarts there. Did you know that the show is celebrating an
1:49:49 > 1:49:48anniversary this year? It's 25 years since it moved here to Westpoint and
1:49:49 > 1:49:48in that time it's grown to be the spectacle that we see today. In
1:49:49 > 1:49:48those two and a half decades, more than 2.5 million people havd
1:49:49 > 1:49:48visited, and John Henderson has been out and about today to celebrate all
1:49:49 > 1:49:48things silver in honour of the Westpoint anniversary. 25 ydars of
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the Devon County Show at Westpoint, and getting in can still be a slog.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48A bit muddy, but hopefully we will have some good trading later. Hairy
1:49:49 > 1:49:48stuff outside and a close shave on the inside. This would turn is
1:49:49 > 1:49:48trying to avoid injury here and has been for a quarter of a century
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Have you ever catch yourself in 25 years? I pray yellow I have been
1:49:49 > 1:49:48distracted as a pretty girl goes by. The silver anniversary has provided
1:49:49 > 1:49:48sartorial influence for somd. There is a beer that has been brewed for
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the 25 years and I can't relember what it is called. Hi Ho Silver
1:49:49 > 1:49:48yes. Bacca like the 25th anniversary has sown the seeds of an idda for
1:49:49 > 1:49:48those with green fingers. Away from flower power, the show still has
1:49:49 > 1:49:48some new visitors. This is this red setter's first taste of the dog
1:49:49 > 1:49:48show. His first show. She h`s dried food. Only six`month`old. Anything
1:49:49 > 1:49:48else she can find as well. Over the past 25 years, there has
1:49:49 > 1:49:48been lots of job vacation and a chance for men to continue their
1:49:49 > 1:49:48romances with steam. Is that three of you in this relationship? Yes,
1:49:49 > 1:49:48me, the steam engine and thd wife. What better way to celebratd 25
1:49:49 > 1:49:48years of the Devon County Show than with a celebratory beer. Tina, 4
1:49:49 > 1:49:48more of these. Make it snappy. Glad to see he's getting the drinks in.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48We saw some muddy scenes and it was a bit like whether the ducks earlier
1:49:49 > 1:49:48today which is quite apt considering what you been up to. I hear you got
1:49:49 > 1:49:48a flap. Beautifully put. Whx not use all the cliches? What I havd done
1:49:49 > 1:49:48today is learn to herd ducks using a sheepdog. Yes, and I found something
1:49:49 > 1:49:48else I can't do. But I had ` wonderful teacher, a master, all the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48way from West Wales. Tell md, what do I have to learn today? Wd will
1:49:49 > 1:49:48give you a brief opportunitx of working with the border collie. I
1:49:49 > 1:49:48have left the sheep in West Wales, and I've got some Indian Runner
1:49:49 > 1:49:48ducks, and with the four colmands we tried to get them through the tunnel
1:49:49 > 1:49:48and then try to get them back in the trailer. Do you know the secrets of
1:49:49 > 1:49:48working the Glen? You have to give the voice commands in a Welsh
1:49:49 > 1:49:48accent. You didn't tell me that There's lovely! Buy is clockwise,

1:49:49 > 1:49:48will help you, so you can look after one side, Glenn on the other. Get
1:49:49 > 1:49:48them slowly through the tunnel and try to make your way into the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48trailer. Stand, by. Go on, the ducks. Use the stick explan`tion not
1:49:49 > 1:49:48hello, darlings. Where is Glenn Through the tunnel, ducks. H'm just
1:49:49 > 1:49:48going to see how Natalie is getting on. I got a few things to hdlp her.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48In, go through. Away. She doesn t seem to be doing very well. Some
1:49:49 > 1:49:48ducks, there we go. Let's sde if that will help. Away. Away. Stand.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Yes! Good boy. Can I have a case? Does he do kisses? You can try. He
1:49:49 > 1:49:48does, thank you. I can see xou making fun of Natalie. Let's give
1:49:49 > 1:49:48him the chance to see if he's any better. What is he like? Don't touch
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the ducks with this or you will be disqualified. It is an extension to
1:49:49 > 1:49:48your arm. Away. Away. David. Did you see they all went through there
1:49:49 > 1:49:48That was beginners luck. My first prize will go to you, Natalhe, you
1:49:49 > 1:49:48are far better harrier. Well done. They're still going.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Well, you did a good job thdre, but I think David was cheating ` bit. I
1:49:49 > 1:49:48think he practised with the toy ducks beforehand. Know, all of my
1:49:49 > 1:49:48ducks went through the tunndl. You were taking the Mickey again. Lovely
1:49:49 > 1:49:48weather this morning and thd showers were intense earlier.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48There is a line of showers that are going to approach in the next hour
1:49:49 > 1:49:48or so and we could see some rain here at the showground. The sort of
1:49:49 > 1:49:48temperatures we have seen today have been really mixed. Some places that
1:49:49 > 1:49:48saw the showers had no more than 14 or 15. But with the sun out it has
1:49:49 > 1:49:48been at 18 degrees and it is pretty warm at this time of year btt it's
1:49:49 > 1:49:48acting as a trigger for showers and the showers are the ones th`t we
1:49:49 > 1:49:48have to watch carefully over the next 24 hours or so. There hs a Met
1:49:49 > 1:49:48office warning about showers for this evening and overnight. They
1:49:49 > 1:49:48have not issued a warning for tomorrow but we will have the same
1:49:49 > 1:49:48sort of problem will stop wd are at risk of seeing some heavy showers.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48It's those showers that could be slow moving through the day and
1:49:49 > 1:49:48could cause the same sort of problem at the showground we saw thhs
1:49:49 > 1:49:48morning. Very damp ground and tricky conditions for the cars and vehicles
1:49:49 > 1:49:48trying to get in and out of the car parks. What we are going to see in
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the next 24 hours is a similar story to what we saw today. The showers
1:49:49 > 1:49:48will be mostly in the morning and will brighten up a short whhle. The
1:49:49 > 1:49:48other feature of the weather is for other feature of the weather is for
1:49:49 > 1:49:4818 northerly breeze across parts of Cornwall. It's that northerly breeze
1:49:49 > 1:49:48that will bring the temperatures down. Let's start with the summary
1:49:49 > 1:49:48of what is happening for thd Devon County Show. First we have showers
1:49:49 > 1:49:48and we will see them on and off the next couple of days. Bring `
1:49:49 > 1:49:48waterproof or an umbrella bdcause there will be some showers over the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48next two days. The satellitd picture shows you the extent of the cloud
1:49:49 > 1:49:48which is extensive and it whll continue to produce showers for the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48next few days. It is low prdssure. Doesn't change much by the liddle of
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the day but by the middle of the day on Saturday it's beginning to move
1:49:49 > 1:49:48away and will take its time and is not going to clear until thd end of
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the day on Sunday. A closer look at the picture shows where the showers
1:49:49 > 1:49:48have been in the last hour or so. Some of the showers are still around
1:49:49 > 1:49:48and there is a clutch of showers coming up across the English Channel
1:49:49 > 1:49:48that will arrive along the coast in the next couple of hours. The
1:49:49 > 1:49:48forecast for the evening and overnight tonight is for thd showers
1:49:49 > 1:49:48to continue and if anything they become more widespread and overnight
1:49:49 > 1:49:48temperatures are no lower than 2 or 13 degrees. A muggy, humid feel
1:49:49 > 1:49:48tomorrow. Lots of cloud and showers in the morning but a bit brhghter in
1:49:49 > 1:49:48the afternoon and we could see Sunny spells develop them. But ag`in, the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48risk of showers is always going to be there. Temperatures similar to
1:49:49 > 1:49:48today, 15 or 16, maybe 17. For the Isles of Scilly, morning showers and
1:49:49 > 1:49:48quite a breezy day but we sdrve `` should see sunshine. Onto the times
1:49:49 > 1:49:48of high water at Plymouth. The area of low pressure is right
1:49:49 > 1:49:48over as so the wind is changing direction through the day and the
1:49:49 > 1:49:48showers risk continues. That is the outlook for the rest of the week and
1:49:49 > 1:49:48into the weekend, it does gdt better. The showers are light and
1:49:49 > 1:49:48few on Sunday and hopefully a dry day for bank holiday Monday. Have a
1:49:49 > 1:49:48good evening. Thank you, David and thanks to
1:49:49 > 1:49:48everyone at the Devon Countx Show who have made so welcome. Wd have
1:49:49 > 1:49:48had a lovely day. Tomorrow ht is just in's turn to do a challenge and
1:49:49 > 1:49:48he will be judging a sausagd competition. I am indeed. A serious
1:49:49 > 1:49:48honour and privilege. I will be deciding Devin's tastiest s`usage
1:49:49 > 1:49:48tomorrow. We will leave it ` night with music from Rich Cattell, his
1:49:49 > 1:49:48debut single, whisking away the working day. How appropriatd. From
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Wallasey, good night. `` from all of us here.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48When the first travellers crossed America, they were faced with this -
1:49:49 > 1:49:48from snow-capped mountains to arid plains and thick forests.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48The very nature of the American personality was defined.
1:49:49 > 1:49:48Ray Mears explores the land behind the Hollywood legend
1:49:49 > 1:49:49and discovers the wild that made the west.
