:00:00. > :00:08.European elections. There is ` first look at the papers on the .ewq

:00:09. > :00:11.European elections. There is ` first Good Evening. The UK Independence

:00:12. > :00:14.Party is celebrating after topping the poll in the South West Duropean

:00:15. > :00:21.Elections. But it wasn't enough to get an extra MEP. The Conservatives

:00:22. > :00:26.were pushed into second place and Labour regained the seat thdy lost

:00:27. > :00:29.last time. There was surprise success for the Greens, who made

:00:30. > :00:33.history by taking a seat here for the first time. But the big losers

:00:34. > :00:40.were the Lib Dems who now h`ve no MEP's in the region. Here's our

:00:41. > :00:43.political editor Martyn Oatds. They got the backing of the

:00:44. > :00:50.billboards during the campahgn and when it came to polling day they got

:00:51. > :00:53.the backing of the voters as well. As the counting took place, the

:00:54. > :00:55.party polled most votes in places from Cornwall to Weymouth and

:00:56. > :01:03.Portland and from Plymouth to South Somerset via Torbay. 140,000 more

:01:04. > :01:09.votes than in 2009, but the party only ended up with the same number

:01:10. > :01:12.of MEPs. Two. Five years ago, we got about four

:01:13. > :01:15.first places. This time we got at least 20 to 30 first places, and

:01:16. > :01:19.that gives us a marvellous platform to go forward.

:01:20. > :01:28.The Conservatives came top hn a few areas but this was a night they

:01:29. > :01:31.mostly came in second place. More than 30,000 fewer votes than last

:01:32. > :01:36.time saw their MEPs dropped from three to two.

:01:37. > :01:40.People felt that they could have a free go. And they have had ` bit of

:01:41. > :01:43.a go. But as it happens in the south`west they haven't rettrned any

:01:44. > :01:47.more MEPs than they had before, so I don't see this is going to be

:01:48. > :01:52.repeated next year in the gdneral election, but I'm not compl`cent

:01:53. > :01:58.about that. UKIP and the Greens fought out the

:01:59. > :02:01.final seat to be announced. History was then made as the region gained

:02:02. > :02:05.its first Green MEP. Well, I've been in the Green party

:02:06. > :02:08.for 25 years now, and I've lost very, very many elections, so it is

:02:09. > :02:11.actually a wonderful feeling to have won one. It is a huge

:02:12. > :02:14.responsibility, but I am looking forward to what I can achieve in

:02:15. > :02:20.Europe. It's a great opporttnity for the Greens in the south west.

:02:21. > :02:23.Labour managed to regain thd seat it lost last time, thanks to places

:02:24. > :02:25.like Exeter where it topped the poll.

:02:26. > :02:29.We need to make sure the European Union works for the people of the

:02:30. > :02:33.south west, and that is acttally what I regard as my primary task as

:02:34. > :02:36.an MEP for the region. It is to bring jobs and investment into the

:02:37. > :02:43.region over the coming five years. The big losers were the Libdral

:02:44. > :02:47.Democrats. They came fifth `cross the region and lost an MEP of 2

:02:48. > :02:49.years standing. A particular blow in a region they have traditionally

:02:50. > :02:59.regarded as one of their strongholds.

:03:00. > :03:02.And Martin joins me in the studio. So, a dramatic night, Martin.

:03:03. > :03:05.Yes, and one with a twist, because this was expected to be a bhg

:03:06. > :03:09.contest between the Conserv`tives and UKIP as to which could walk away

:03:10. > :03:12.with the lion's share of thd seats but as we have seen the Gredn Party

:03:13. > :03:15.actually denied both UKIP and the Tories that crucial third sdat.

:03:16. > :03:18.Which suggests that voters `re fed up with the Westminster parties and

:03:19. > :03:20.are looking elsewhere. They may be looking beyond just UKIP to other

:03:21. > :03:23.alternatives. Quite a come`down for the Lhb Dems

:03:24. > :03:26.in what is traditionally ond of their strongholds.

:03:27. > :03:29.Yes, the Lib Dems were so long a prominent force across the region

:03:30. > :03:32.and if you drill down into the details of some of these results, it

:03:33. > :03:34.is still more depressing for them seeing their nose`dive in rdal

:03:35. > :03:37.heartlands like Paddy Ashdown's old constituency in South Somerset. But

:03:38. > :03:41.we know that people tend to vote very often in a different w`y in the

:03:42. > :03:44.European elections than in domestic elections, and if we look at local

:03:45. > :03:47.elections in the region since the coalition formed, they have been by

:03:48. > :03:50.no means disastrous for the Lib Dems. They regained a lot of seats

:03:51. > :03:53.on Cornwall Council last ye`r, and the other interesting thing is that

:03:54. > :03:54.the Lib Dems have never dond particularly well in Europe`n

:03:55. > :04:05.elections. OK, Martin. Thank you for joining

:04:06. > :04:08.me. A male holiday`maker sufferdd broken

:04:09. > :04:10.bones after being pushed from a restaurant balcony into thedstuary

:04:11. > :04:13.at Salcombe, Devon and Cornwall Police have said. The inciddnt

:04:14. > :04:16.happened at the Island Stredt Bar and Grill on Sunday night. Officers

:04:17. > :04:22.are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

:04:23. > :04:25.The organisers of the Devon County Show say they're offering a full

:04:26. > :04:28.refund to everyone who bought tickets for last Saturday, but were

:04:29. > :04:32.unable to use them. The third and final day of the show was c`ncelled,

:04:33. > :04:34.for the first time in the event s history, following heavy rahn which

:04:35. > :04:38.made the car parks potentially unsafe. Organisers said abandoning

:04:39. > :04:48.the show would have a significant financial impact but they w`nted to

:04:49. > :04:51.do right by their paying customers. Thousands of pirates flocked to the

:04:52. > :04:54.promenade in Penzance this afternoon, to try and win b`ck the

:04:55. > :04:57.world record for the most ntmber of people dressed as the scurvx

:04:58. > :05:02.seadogs. The Cornish port lost the title to Hastings two years ago But

:05:03. > :05:07.as David George reports, thdy narrowly missed out on winnhng it

:05:08. > :05:17.back. The battle with the Sussex town is

:05:18. > :05:21.underway. After all, the Pirates of Hastings doesn't have the rhght ring

:05:22. > :05:24.to it, does it? The Pirates of Penzance were everywhere. Strely

:05:25. > :05:27.there has never been so much timber shivered, so many swashes btckled or

:05:28. > :05:34.rogers jollied? In order to break this record, they had to be`t

:05:35. > :05:37.Hastings. But Hastings are here You scurvy crew, you're armed to the

:05:38. > :05:41.teeth, aren't you? We are, yes. Well, we are d`ngerous

:05:42. > :05:45.people in Penzance. And what draws you to this dvent?

:05:46. > :05:51.It's Pirates Day, for goodndss sake! Isn't it, girls? Ra!

:05:52. > :05:54.I think the people that looked strangest now are people th`t aren't

:05:55. > :05:59.addressed as pirates. They want to make a world rdcord. We

:06:00. > :06:00.did it last time, and we will do it again this year.

:06:01. > :06:08.What happened to your eye? OH, just a cutlass.

:06:09. > :06:13.Ooh, nasty. In the end, there were 14,154 Pirates of Penzance. 77 short

:06:14. > :06:25.of a new world record. I love it, mate. Keep to thd cove.

:06:26. > :06:28.That's the news this Bank Holiday Monday, so I'll say good night and

:06:29. > :06:32.leave you with Ian Fergusson who has the weather forecast.

:06:33. > :06:37.Hello. A very good evening to you. Now, generally speaking, we should

:06:38. > :06:40.fare quite well tomorrow in terms of a fair amount of dry and brhght

:06:41. > :06:44.weather about. The threat of some showers, as well. We have sden a few

:06:45. > :06:47.of those during the course of today, and through the course of tomorrow

:06:48. > :06:50.most of the showers and showery outbreaks of rain will tend to be up

:06:51. > :06:53.towards the east and north`dast parts of Dorset and Somerset, for

:06:54. > :06:56.example. Temperatures getting down to about eight to 11 Celsius by the

:06:57. > :06:59.time we're through towards daybreak tomorrow. Now, tomorrow shotld bring

:07:00. > :07:01.a fair amount of dry and brhght weather, particularly across parts

:07:02. > :07:05.of Cornwall and Devon. Convdrsely, come further up towards the north

:07:06. > :07:08.and the east and there's more in the way of cloud around, with some

:07:09. > :07:10.showery outbreaks. A few showers breaking out elsewhere as wdll

:07:11. > :07:14.throughout the course of thd day. For the Channel Islands, I think we

:07:15. > :07:17.should have a dry day all the way through with a fair and of sunshine

:07:18. > :07:20.around, so like I said it is something of mixed fortunes. A

:07:21. > :07:23.moderate breeze for us all. Temperatures tomorrow getting up to

:07:24. > :07:26.14 Celsius to 16 Celsius for the majority, maybe as high as 07

:07:27. > :07:30.Celsius in a couple of spots. The outlook is a similar story for the

:07:31. > :07:38.rest of this week as well. Next we have Louise Lear with your national

:07:39. > :07:45.The month of May is often thought of as the transition from Spring into

:07:46. > :07:48.summer. It can have a variety of weather. We've seen just that in

:07:49. > :07:49.just one day. In
