:01:03. > :01:09.There's been criticism from some Alderney residents that

:01:10. > :01:12.new Trislanders should be used instead and the company that used to

:01:13. > :01:15.make them says it wasn't approached about replacing them.

:01:16. > :01:17.Britten Norman's Chief Execttive William Hynett joined me earlier

:03:10. > :03:13.On Aurigny, as you said, despite concerns raised that all

:03:14. > :03:28.the options perhaps hadn't been considered, deputies did vote to

:03:29. > :03:31.back Aurigny's plans. Backing them by agreeing to

:03:34. > :03:37.Something that will cost in the region of ?3 million.

:03:38. > :03:39.And sticking with the millions. News today of two big overspends?

:03:40. > :03:41.How much are we talking? Yes, overspends

:03:49. > :03:50.it's yearly budget by between 4.5 and five million,

:03:54. > :03:55.of delivering the ambitious savings targets the States set.

:03:56. > :04:15.For instance for Health that was ?4.7 million this year.

:05:21. > :05:23.Mulcaster Street to close hour earlier, a move that traders said

:05:24. > :05:27.would cost them thousands. Now it's hoped a compromise has been reached.

:06:05. > :06:09.another, fwens widening pavdments, which becomes costly. We sed a

:06:10. > :06:15.temporary road closure as a positive alternative. For the traders here it

:06:16. > :06:19.is a problem, but they would rather the road is closed instead of their

:06:20. > :06:26.businesses shutting. I we nded to make pit a lot safer. Closing the

:06:27. > :06:27.road is a fantastic idea. As a trial period, let's try it.

:06:32. > :06:34.the road at the time clubs finish is a move that has been welcomdd by the

:06:35. > :06:38.government department responsible for the island's roads. The most

:06:39. > :06:45.logical place to close it would be here where we are. Traffic would get

:06:46. > :06:49.diverted along the road and up that area and back along commerchal

:06:50. > :06:53.buildings. Warning signs cotld be put out further back up the road to

:06:54. > :06:58.deter people from coming down through this way. Discussions

:07:17. > :07:27.Work has begun on a hoard of Iron Age coins. These coins lay hidden

:07:28. > :07:34.for around 2,000 years. But they're now on display while their cleaned

:07:35. > :07:38.and counted. We use acid to remove the copper corrosion. That gets them

:07:39. > :07:42.back to their shining appearance. But there are bits that won't

:07:43. > :07:49.remove. The coins come over and we do some work by hand to do the last

:07:50. > :07:54.cleaning. The coins were discovered by metal detectorists in Jersey two

:07:55. > :08:01.years ago. It is thought thdy were buried for safe keeping durhng a

:08:02. > :08:06.war. Work could take up to three years. And it is thought other

:08:07. > :08:12.treasures such as jewellery are hidden inside. It has attracted a

:08:13. > :08:17.lot of public interest. Even from Jersey`born former England

:08:18. > :08:22.footballers like Graham Le Saux All this week we are looking at surfing

:08:23. > :08:27.here in the Channel Island `nd the impact the sport has had on Jersey.

:08:28. > :08:32.Tonight we ask if there are economic benefits of playing in the waves. It

:08:33. > :08:38.is not hard to see the attr`ction for the hundreds of people who now

:08:39. > :08:47.surf in Jersey. Waves, sunshine and gear, which can add up.

:08:48. > :08:57.Is there real money to be m`de from this? Competitor surfer Sam George

:08:58. > :09:01.runs his own surf shop. It hs can be tough. Being the owner of a surf

:09:02. > :09:07.shop bgs you won't be a millionaire, but it is more about the lifestyle

:09:08. > :09:12.and it is nice to be your own boss. There are around 12 surfing`related

:09:13. > :09:19.businesses in Jersey and thd fashion and music it inspires. Is not known

:09:20. > :09:28.how much it brings in. If you take finance and other retailing sides,

:09:29. > :09:33.it is a tiny part, but it h`s part of how people perceive Jersdy. One

:09:34. > :10:15.organisation that uses it is Jersey tourism.

:10:16. > :10:19.And the series continues tolorrow evening on this programme when Jen

:10:20. > :10:21.explores the competitive side of Jersey surfing.

:10:22. > :10:22.There's also more surfing stories on BBC Radio Jersey tomorrow

:10:23. > :10:39.morning from 6.00am. Now it is time for the weather.

:10:40. > :10:42.Come the weekend we expect high pressure to build. There is

:10:43. > :10:47.low`pressure across the United Kingdom in the next couple of days.

:10:48. > :10:51.This area of high pressure will start to build income the wdekend so

:10:52. > :10:55.on Friday and Saturday and Sunday it is slightly more settled, pdrhaps

:10:56. > :11:00.with more sunshine and it whll be drier. You can see behind btilding

:11:01. > :11:05.during the course of Friday and it continues to build as we had through

:11:06. > :11:09.Saturday. It is turning mord settled and as we look at tonight's whether

:11:10. > :11:12.we have showers and longer spells of rain. The showers could be heavy and

:11:13. > :11:21.they will last through much of the night on and off. There will be dry

:11:22. > :11:26.periods as well. The showers could be quite heavy at times.

:11:27. > :11:29.Temperatures will fall to a mild seven or 11 degrees. Showers to

:11:30. > :11:34.start the day for some tomorrow Very much hit and miss with the rain

:11:35. > :11:38.or showers and some areas whll stay dry altogether. Hard to predict

:11:39. > :11:42.exactly where the rain will be an tomorrow afternoon we expect highs

:11:43. > :11:46.of between 12 and 15 which hs a notch below the seasonal avdrage.

:11:47. > :11:57.The wind will come in from the West or the North West. Tomorrow the

:11:58. > :12:06.coastal water forecast is slight to moderate sea state.

:12:07. > :12:22.Your high water times. As wd look ahead to the sea state, the surf

:12:23. > :12:25.conditions are choppy a few places. The weekend pressure is building and

:12:26. > :12:27.there is a possible shower `nd there will be sunny spells as well. High

:12:28. > :12:31.pressure is rising all the while. A brood of red`billed choughs is

:12:32. > :12:34.being hand`reared by keepers in Jersey after last year's chicks

:12:35. > :12:37.were all lost. The four chicks are being fdd hourly

:12:38. > :12:39.at Durrell Conservation Trust and staff even have to take them

:12:40. > :12:43.home at night. It's part of a conservation effort

:12:44. > :13:01.to re`populate Jersey with That is the news and weather here in

:13:02. > :13:04.the Channel Islands for now. We will have more after the News At ten and

:13:05. > :13:13.until then have a good evenhng. Now we go to Spotlight.

:13:14. > :13:15.people to come on and try a number of types of craft and have ` good

:13:16. > :13:19.time and enjoy it. We want to see them coming back with big grins on

:13:20. > :13:22.their faces and carrying on what they have experienced.

:13:23. > :13:25.Speeding motorists may rile people who live close to some roads

:13:26. > :13:29.and there are even schemes they can get involved in to try to gdt

:13:30. > :13:34.But one landlord who decided to take direct action and put up

:13:35. > :13:38.his own road signs on the A386 has been told to take them down.

:13:39. > :13:46.Spotlight's John Ayres reports from the Half Way House near Tavhstock.

:13:47. > :13:51.When enough is enough somethmes people take the law into thdir own

:13:52. > :13:56.hands. Clive Paterson wants people to slow down and this was hhs way of

:13:57. > :14:02.doing it. We have had 61 incidents in seven years ranging from shunts

:14:03. > :14:07.to five vehicle accidents which caused the road to be closed seven

:14:08. > :14:11.hours. To give you some ide` of the driving here, this blue car is

:14:12. > :14:14.signalling to turn right into the pub car park. The van cuts `cross

:14:15. > :14:19.his path as he turns to keep the speed up. The local council believes

:14:20. > :14:23.the measures already in place are enough and have told Mr Pattinson

:14:24. > :14:26.that his signs must come down. In a statement, West Devon Borough

:14:27. > :14:29.Council said that while thex appreciate the good intentions, they

:14:30. > :14:35.do have a disc `` a duty to ensure that road signs followed national

:14:36. > :14:37.rules and do not cause a hazard by distracting motorist. This

:14:38. > :14:41.particular sign was large and required consent, and they hnvite Mr

:14:42. > :14:44.Pattinson to make an applic`tion if he wishes to do so. They sax in the

:14:45. > :14:48.case of smaller signs for events, they have the discretion to allow

:14:49. > :14:53.them on at every basis so long as they don't cause a hazard to

:14:54. > :14:56.motorists. `` on a temporarx basis. The Half Way House is not the only

:14:57. > :15:01.place where action has been taken along the A386. The gorilla from

:15:02. > :15:05.Paignton zoo's art project has popped up outside Plymouth. The new

:15:06. > :15:10.owners are using it to raisd a similar issue in traffic. Slow down,

:15:11. > :15:15.think about what you're doing. Anything could happen, it could be a

:15:16. > :15:22.cyclist coming off a bike, `nother car stopping suddenly. I thhnk a lot

:15:23. > :15:25.of drivers, they behave a bht irresponsibly. It's like a different

:15:26. > :15:27.person when you get in your car because you are protected in your

:15:28. > :15:33.little shell and not being very polite. There are signs all the way

:15:34. > :15:38.along for 40 mph, but it becomes part and parcel of the furnhture of

:15:39. > :15:43.the road, and people become blas? and don't notice it. Somethhng like

:15:44. > :15:50.this which is coming up oncd in a blue moon, people notice th`t, and

:15:51. > :15:52.they will respond to it. Clhve Pattinson has taken his signs down

:15:53. > :15:54.on hopes there doesn't have to be more accidents to take `` to get the

:15:55. > :15:57.council to take notice. The Theatre Royal Plymouth hs to

:15:58. > :16:00.host a special event to showcase the talents of people with learning

:16:01. > :16:03.disabilities this weekend. The Funky Llama Festival at TR2

:16:04. > :16:06.on Saturday is the first evdnt Scott Bingham has been to sde some

:16:07. > :16:25.of the stars rehearsing He was the DJ with up`and`coming

:16:26. > :16:29.hip`hop band the Scribes, btt he was left in a coma after taking the

:16:30. > :16:35.heroin substitute methadone. He now uses a wheelchair and his love for

:16:36. > :16:42.music is as strong as ever. Keeps me alive, keeps me good. If anxthing

:16:43. > :16:48.has helped me over the years, its music. He is one of a number of

:16:49. > :16:51.local artists with learning difficulties being meant order

:16:52. > :16:55.Plymouth music zone and thex could be performing to a crowd of up to

:16:56. > :16:59.1000 people at the festival on Saturday. I love seeing improvement

:17:00. > :17:41.from people, them having a potentially never met beford, so

:17:42. > :17:44.that's a great experience for them. The outdoor event, organised by the

:17:45. > :17:48.Theatre Royal Plymouth is the first of its kind in the south`west. The

:17:49. > :17:51.aim is to challenge people's perceptions. We are working with

:17:52. > :19:15.Almost like a gunner himself, professional artists and

:19:16. > :19:20.Almost like a gunner himself, Nicholas Whyte shoots from outpost

:19:21. > :19:24.above Okehampton camp. His lission takes into areas where general

:19:25. > :19:28.access is restricted. Camouflaged behind an old box camera, hhs

:19:29. > :19:35.pictures tell a little lame story, a story of military links herd which

:19:36. > :19:39.began 150 years ago `` little`known. This should be the iconic ilage of

:19:40. > :19:43.the exhibition because you `re drawn into this vibrant green agahnst a

:19:44. > :19:46.white background which is why it's positioned in this area of the

:19:47. > :19:52.gallery. A long corridor gohng round and it dominates this end. Hmages

:19:53. > :19:55.like this one, revealing bullet cases in a demolition crater,

:19:56. > :19:59.acknowledge the military's environmental impact without

:20:00. > :20:03.judgement. There are a lot of people who want them of the moors

:20:04. > :20:07.completely. But in my opinion, and I came into the project not knowing,

:20:08. > :20:11.and I wanted to include both sides and let the viewer make thehr own

:20:12. > :20:17.mind up about what they think. It has been a labour of love. When you

:20:18. > :20:21.are photographing something to do with the military, the weather

:20:22. > :20:29.doesn't put them off, so I feel that to accurately photograph th`t I also

:20:30. > :20:33.need to go out in all weathdrs. Today is quite tame, it's qtite a

:20:34. > :20:41.nice day. As long as there hs not six feet of snow, it's all good

:20:42. > :20:42.Nick's exhibition is at the Greenhill Gallery until the end of

:20:43. > :20:47.June. Have you ever wondered how `rtists

:20:48. > :20:50.create their works, Well, if you have,

:20:51. > :20:54.then this is the week to find out more, as hundreds of artists

:20:55. > :20:57.across Cornwall are throwing open The studios themselves are often

:20:58. > :21:01.hidden away down country lanes, in barns, chapels and sheds,

:21:02. > :21:04.so the event really does give you a sneaky peak behind the scdnes

:21:05. > :21:08.of Cornwall's vibrant art world And Eleanor Parkinson has

:21:09. > :21:21.following the trail. Sally Giles has been a pot or her

:21:22. > :21:24.life, specialising in porcelain and stoneware and experimenting with

:21:25. > :21:28.unusual glazes. This week hd will not only see her at the Potters

:21:29. > :21:32.wheel in her studio, she will also give you a tour of the whold site

:21:33. > :21:36.and even show you where she makes her own clay. I wasn't sure many

:21:37. > :21:41.people would come because it's down a long track and it is monex that we

:21:42. > :21:45.had lots of people, 13 or 14 day. Not everybody buying, but pdople

:21:46. > :21:48.have been interested in see the process of making the clay `nd all

:21:49. > :21:53.the different processes comhng through, and they have been, an

:21:54. > :22:07.entry. `` they have been complimentary.

:22:08. > :22:12.Rhys Ingram is a sculptor and gets his inspiration from the wildlife

:22:13. > :22:16.around him in Cornwall. Manx of his larger pieces are on show in famous

:22:17. > :22:23.gardens and houses. These slaller work started as maquettes and are

:22:24. > :22:28.made from clay. It is about form and mass and solidity and about material

:22:29. > :22:33.as well, working with materhals Do you refer to the form of thd animal

:22:34. > :22:36.a lot as you work? I do sketches all the time. I am always drawing and

:22:37. > :22:41.looking and getting inspiration all the time. I look at my bedroom

:22:42. > :22:54.window and there are a load of rocks on the wire, and I'm fascin`ted

:22:55. > :23:00.You want sure I'd go around the painting, so you have this thing

:23:01. > :23:05.here, so you could have it down there `` you want your eye to go

:23:06. > :23:08.around. Janet specialises in watercolours and she has opdned a

:23:09. > :23:12.studio and garden to those who want to learn about the techniquds

:23:13. > :23:16.involved. People are interested to see the way you are working, to see

:23:17. > :23:20.your work, to see where your base, and it's less intimidating than

:23:21. > :23:23.going to a gallery. As artists, we get good feedback. Even if people

:23:24. > :23:31.don't buy, you get fantastic conversations.

:23:32. > :23:37.Cornwall has always been a haven for artists, and more than 100 `rtists

:23:38. > :23:45.are opening their studios this week hoping to impress and also hnspire.

:23:46. > :23:51.Having an impressive go. Did she really do that? I hope you `re not

:23:52. > :23:54.calling into question. They had some brilliant sunshine.

:23:55. > :23:57.It's been a mixture of sunshine and showers across the region today,

:23:58. > :24:01.but what will the rest of the week have in store weather`wise?

:24:02. > :24:10.High pressure is building as we head to the weekend so it is set to turn

:24:11. > :24:14.a little more settled. The rest of the week, rain or showers at times

:24:15. > :24:18.which is mainly during the working week. Some sunshine to be h`d and is

:24:19. > :24:22.more likely as we head towards the weekend, and the pressure is

:24:23. > :24:25.starting to rise, high pressure arising from Friday onwards. Let's

:24:26. > :24:29.take a look at what we can dxpect over the next 24 hours. This is the

:24:30. > :24:33.satellite image from earlier. Clouds are spilling in from the north and

:24:34. > :24:37.the West. The best of any brightness was for western parts of Cornwall

:24:38. > :24:42.and here we saw sunshine, btt there was a lot of rain as well on the

:24:43. > :24:46.cards, and the rain moved in from the North West. There was the odd

:24:47. > :24:50.heavy burst and sunny spells were in the South and West. Tonight we

:24:51. > :24:54.expect the rain to continue through the course of the night and it could

:24:55. > :24:57.be heavy in a few places. M`inly light and patchy and the risk of

:24:58. > :25:05.Hilltop farm with temperatures falling to a mild ten or 12 Celsius

:25:06. > :25:10.`` Hilltop fog. Through the course of the day tomorrow, we will see

:25:11. > :25:13.rain or showers and during the afternoon those showers could turn

:25:14. > :25:18.into the odd rumble of thunder and be on the heavy side in a fdw

:25:19. > :25:22.places. Temperatures reaching 1 or 15 Celsius. It stays unsettled with

:25:23. > :25:25.the rain or showers tomorrow afternoon in particular. Thd

:25:26. > :25:31.sunshine sparks off showers will stop a high of 15 or 16 Celsius and

:25:32. > :25:35.the winds are variable. If xou catch a shower tomorrow it could be

:25:36. > :25:40.slow`moving thunder. The Schlly Isles, cloudy, mainly dry, further

:25:41. > :25:42.rain expected tomorrow night. The winds are north`westerly and

:25:43. > :25:47.temperatures reaching a high of 14 Celsius.

:25:48. > :26:00.Here are your high tides for tomorrow.
