:00:00. > :00:11.Joe Wilson repopts. That's

:00:12. > :00:16.Pregnant women in Jersey cotld get more maternity leave from their jobs

:00:17. > :00:19.if a proposed change in the law gets government approval.

:00:20. > :00:21.But one politician says the island is lagging behind

:00:22. > :00:23.other jurisdictions in looking after expectant mothers

:00:24. > :00:36.Pregnancy can be an anxious time, but women in Jersey have an added

:00:37. > :00:40.financial worry as there is no legal obligation for employers to pay them

:00:41. > :00:47.for their time off work. Under new proposals, they would get 2`mac

:00:48. > :00:54.weeksmulti`mac wages. After giving birth, among needs time to

:00:55. > :00:55.recuperate and regroup, as well as bonding with their child and

:00:56. > :01:01.establishing breast`feeding if they choose to breast`feed. But that is

:01:02. > :01:06.what will happen as the Sochal Security Department wants to bring

:01:07. > :01:11.in a law bringing in two wedks paid leave and 16 weeks unpaid ldave A

:01:12. > :01:16.more generous scheme was proposed for 26 weeks paid leave and a

:01:17. > :01:19.guaranteed job to go back to. When we look at how other countrhes

:01:20. > :01:23.compare, we have taken a long time to adopt maternity leave, wd are not

:01:24. > :01:29.very generous in terms of p`id maternity leave. We can afford to do

:01:30. > :01:33.better. The concern I have hs that this leave would be available to

:01:34. > :01:37.everybody without having served any length of service with their

:01:38. > :01:43.employer. That puts a lot of stress on employers. This copy shop owner

:01:44. > :01:46.has been following the debate closely, and says although Social

:01:47. > :01:52.Security would foot the bill for maternity pay, there will bd cost

:01:53. > :01:56.implications for businesses. Not only are you having to keep the job

:01:57. > :01:58.open for individuals to stax on you have to train individuals to carry

:01:59. > :02:07.on doing that job, and employing somebody else. Both proposals will

:02:08. > :02:10.be debated next month. The detail of the eventual legislation will be the

:02:11. > :02:11.key to balancing the rights of women and the needs of the island's

:02:12. > :02:14.businesses. Jersey's Planning and Environment

:02:15. > :02:17.Minister says he's unable to support a new strategy passed by

:02:18. > :02:20.his states colleagues today. The government has backed ndw plans

:02:21. > :02:23.to spend ?75 million on replacing the sewage treatment plant

:02:24. > :02:27.at Bellozanne, improving the sewage network and helphng

:02:28. > :02:30.households connect to main drains. Deputy Duhamel says it doesn't take

:02:31. > :02:33.note of the green policies After nearly three decades of

:02:34. > :02:40.trading, Quayside in Guernsdy has announced it's closing. The home and

:02:41. > :02:43.leisure store in St Sampson's will shut next January. 25 lembers

:02:44. > :02:49.of staff will lose their jobs. Jersey's Treasury has confirmed

:02:50. > :02:52.it's in the process of borrowing ?250 million to invest in

:02:53. > :02:55.social housing. The money will be invested

:02:56. > :02:58.in affordable homes, and will be paid off

:02:59. > :03:01.over the next 40 years An apprenticeship scheme for young

:03:02. > :03:08.aspiring fishermen in Guernsey has been labelled at total joke by some

:03:09. > :03:11.local fishermen. The scheme was launched in September, but so far

:03:12. > :03:15.only two islanders are taking part. The fish quay in St Peter Port

:03:16. > :03:22.is the heart of Guernsey's fishing industry,

:03:23. > :03:24.a particularly challenging hndustry. Buying a boat, rising fuel costs

:03:25. > :03:27.and falling fish prices The government's trying to help

:03:28. > :03:33.by offering under`25s the opportunity to run a small boat for

:03:34. > :03:36.three years as an apprenticdship, before investing in a full licence.

:03:37. > :03:39.So far only one person has been granted a licence

:03:40. > :03:50.and one more has applied. The fisherman I have spoken to today

:03:51. > :03:53.did not want to go on camer` with their thoughts. Some have s`id that

:03:54. > :04:00.they feel the apprenticeship scheme is not working.

:04:01. > :04:02.The Commerce and Employment Department says

:04:03. > :04:05.the scheme's focused on quality rather than quantity

:04:06. > :04:09.This scheme is designed to offer assistance to fisherman who are keen

:04:10. > :04:14.to pursue a career in fisherman dash`mac fishing. Rather th`n the

:04:15. > :04:18.discourages many entrants as possible.

:04:19. > :04:22.Most of these boats are owndd by men who've fished for decades.

:04:23. > :04:24.It's now up to younger generations to decide

:04:25. > :04:27.if a career at sea is really one for them.

:04:28. > :04:30.100 years after the First World War, a campaign's begun to recognise the

:04:31. > :04:35.involvement of the Channel Hslands. The names of the thousands of men

:04:36. > :04:37.who fought are included on monuments around Europe,

:04:38. > :04:40.but there's no mark for the overall contribution islanddrs made.

:04:41. > :04:45.It was described as the war to end all wars.

:04:46. > :04:47.Thousands of men from the Channel Islands

:04:48. > :04:49.fought for the Allies against the German Empire.

:04:50. > :04:54.Many didn't come home. Thosd that died are remembered at the hsland's

:04:55. > :04:56.cenotaphs as well as on varhous larger monuments in France.

:04:57. > :05:00.But there is no specific melorial dedicated to the overall

:05:01. > :05:05.contribution the Channel Islands made anywhere in Europe.

:05:06. > :05:08.Historian Ian witnessed this when he wrote the first ever book

:05:09. > :05:15.on the Channel Islands' involvement in the Great War.

:05:16. > :05:21.Canada and Australia and New Zealand have very large memorials

:05:22. > :05:26.commemorating the sacrifices and the deeds of their soldiers. Thd

:05:27. > :05:33.exception is Jersey and Guernsey. Nowhere in France or Belgiul can you

:05:34. > :05:35.find a monument that commemorates the acts of Jersey and Guernsey

:05:36. > :05:37.soldiers. But now the Vice`Chairman of the

:05:38. > :05:48.Jersey branch of the British Legion Is behind efforts to change that. We

:05:49. > :05:54.need to bring together a te`m, we need to find out whether or not we

:05:55. > :05:57.can build a memorial on French soil. We have to find out who is going to

:05:58. > :06:01.fund it and how it is going to be funded. There are no full lot of

:06:02. > :06:05.things to do, but hopefully we can start the ball rolling and find a

:06:06. > :06:10.way of achieving something over the centenary period.

:06:11. > :06:13.If this memorial goes ahead, our soldiers who risked thehr lives

:06:14. > :06:18.won't be just remembered in the islands, but also where thex fought.

:06:19. > :06:25.That is the news tonight. Ndwsnight is getting under way over on BBC Two

:06:26. > :06:28.investigating child prostitttes being trafficked in the shadow of

:06:29. > :06:35.the Brazil World Cup. I will leave you with the weather forecast.

:06:36. > :06:41.Good evening. We have got r`in around tonight across the islands

:06:42. > :06:46.that will clear as we move hnto the afternoon, even with some stnshine.

:06:47. > :06:52.A short list band dash`mac short lived band of wet weather. Loderate

:06:53. > :06:56.to heavy bursts of rain. Wind also changing direction, becoming

:06:57. > :06:59.westerly and eventually north`westerly first thing tomorrow

:07:00. > :07:03.morning. 10 degrees the minhmum temperature. Wet at first tomorrow

:07:04. > :07:08.morning, but it moves through fairly steadily, by lunchtime cert`inly

:07:09. > :07:12.much brighter with sunny spdlls a few showers by the afternoon. Top

:07:13. > :07:17.temperature of 15, possibly even 16 degrees. A brisk north`west breeze.

:07:18. > :07:23.Fine and dry for the rest of the week. The temperatures get higher

:07:24. > :07:31.and higher, possibly as high as 21, 22 idle weekend. In a minutd, full

:07:32. > :07:32.forecast for the weekend, btt from us good night.

:07:33. > :07:41.outlook, we (ave so-e thun$erstgr-s this Saturday.

:07:42. > :07:48.Interest ring aggression of weather for the rest of this week which

:07:49. > :07:53.could end up as a crescendo on Saturday involving heavy rain. Rain

:07:54. > :07:57.in the shorter term forecast, heading in from the south. It is

:07:58. > :08:02.knocking on the door already and will make a miserable day tomorrow.

:08:03. > :08:08.Rain pushing up Rahm Northern France and get into southern part of

:08:09. > :08:10.England and Wales by the end of the night. Showers ahead of that. A

:08:11. > :08:14.relatively mild night except in the northern half of Scotland.

:08:15. > :08:19.Temperatures will get down into single figures. But that is the area

:08:20. > :08:26.that ends up with a dry start tomorrow. Across most of the

:08:27. > :08:30.country, it is a mass of rain. It will ebb and flow, but there will be

:08:31. > :08:31.heavy bursts
