:00:00. > :00:09.Good evening. There is a first dook `t t(e

:00:10. > :00:12.Personal debt levels in Jersey seem to be falling.

:00:13. > :00:15.According to the Citizens Advice Bureau the size of islanders overall

:00:16. > :00:19.debt is down from five millhon in 2012 to 3.7 million last ye`r, and

:00:20. > :00:22.But many individuals are sthll struggling,

:00:23. > :00:38.the bills just keep piling tp for Tish and she can't afford to pay.

:00:39. > :00:47.After the loss of family melbers, she has fallen into debt. I lost my

:00:48. > :00:58.mum, dad, husband and brothdr. All the debt has come to me and I just

:00:59. > :01:06.can't clear it. She has not been able to afford the ASICs, stch as

:01:07. > :01:12.heating her home. I can't afford to eat properly. I can't afford to put

:01:13. > :01:17.the heating on at all. I suffered so much depression over the winter I

:01:18. > :01:24.stayed in bed with an electric blanket. These are difficult times

:01:25. > :01:29.for Tish, but there is a positive message. The number of islanders

:01:30. > :01:38.seeking help with money problems has dropped. Last year 241 people were

:01:39. > :01:47.helped, totalling ?3.7 millhon. That has fallen from the year before The

:01:48. > :01:55.charity wants to get the message out that the is hope. The amount has

:01:56. > :01:59.reduced slightly. I am hoping that is good news and it is just not a

:02:00. > :02:07.blip. Hopefully, this year we will see less clients again. But some

:02:08. > :02:12.islanders are stuck in a constant debt trap. A trap they don't think

:02:13. > :02:16.they will be freed from any time soon.

:02:17. > :02:19.The jury in the trial of a former Jersey constabld has

:02:20. > :02:23.Graeme Butcher is charged whth 5 counts of misconduct in a ptblic

:02:24. > :02:28.Mr Butcher, who's pleaded not guilty on all counts, is alleged to have

:02:29. > :02:31.used parish money to buy thhngs for himself, including ?600 of petrol.

:02:32. > :02:35.He claims the events were mhstakes and he didn't deliberately set out

:02:36. > :02:40.There's concern amongst dis`bled islanders that little has changed

:02:41. > :02:42.in Guernsey since the passing of the Disability and

:02:43. > :02:47.This was the scene outside the States when the Strategx was

:02:48. > :02:50.Legislation coming from the Strategy won't be ready until 2016.

:02:51. > :02:52.At a meeting last night, Guernsey's Disability Alliance

:02:53. > :02:55.recognised progress in Extr``Care Housing and Carers Allowancd,

:02:56. > :03:11.In terms of what a disabled islander can see right here, right now, there

:03:12. > :03:15.isn't a lot. One of the reasons for that is that the disability strategy

:03:16. > :03:20.is something that needs the gift push from the centre of govdrnment.

:03:21. > :03:25.Things that happen quickly tend to come from individual departlents.

:03:26. > :03:26.This needs to come from the centre and the state isn't structured to do

:03:27. > :03:37.that very well as an island. The comments today of the

:03:38. > :03:40.Commanding Officer of a Can`dian air squadron, which is rememberhng one

:03:41. > :03:47.of its members who was killdd Flight Lieutenant John Saville was

:03:48. > :03:52.trying to knock out a radar position on the island so that the allies

:03:53. > :04:07.could travel undetected to Out of the night sky come the troop

:04:08. > :04:23.carriers and Knight Riders. More than 7000 vessels were headhng for

:04:24. > :04:35.France. This radar station was of significant importance. Flight

:04:36. > :04:42.Lieutenant John Saville set out on his journey, but crashed. It could

:04:43. > :04:46.have been catastrophic if the radar was not destroyed. Something that

:04:47. > :04:52.was recognised today by the people of Guernsey. That would havd woken

:04:53. > :05:00.the Germans are, so it could not be allowed to happen. That mission cost

:05:01. > :05:03.one life, but saved thousands. One of the men who located the `ircraft

:05:04. > :05:11.said it was only then they could confirm that the pilot had remained

:05:12. > :05:22.with his plane. We did several dives and found a few personal itdms. We

:05:23. > :05:31.also found John stayed with the aircraft. Flight Lieutenant John

:05:32. > :05:38.Saville's aircraft lies not far away from here. He was the only lember of

:05:39. > :05:43.his crew not to return. Howdver they did not out the radar station,

:05:44. > :05:54.even though the Germans got it running again. However, the Allied

:05:55. > :05:59.fills his was still able to carry out the D`Day operation.

:06:00. > :06:02.One of the last few flying Lancaster Bombers touched down

:06:03. > :06:06.It's due to take part in thd D`Day 70th anniversary celebrations

:06:07. > :06:09.in Normandy and will be in the island for a few days.
