:00:00. > :00:07.Welcome to the first BBC Ch`nnel Islands of the new week.

:00:08. > :00:12.A man dies in an industrial accident in Jdrsey.

:00:13. > :00:16.Details are still coming in. We'll bring you the latest.

:00:17. > :00:20.Plus, open justice ` a first look at where victims of abuse whll give

:00:21. > :00:31.evidence in what promises to be a thorough and independent hnquiry.

:00:32. > :00:38.If the system is wrong, it lust be made to be shown it was wrong and

:00:39. > :00:40.then brought forward with ideas that we can make sure we do not have

:00:41. > :00:42.these problems again. Record`breaking Guernsey fundraiser

:00:43. > :00:44.Roger Allsopp recovers And why seagulls could suffdr

:00:45. > :00:59.when Guernsey's landfill closes A man in his 60s has been khlled

:01:00. > :01:03.in an apparent industrial accident It happened on Upper Midvald Road

:01:04. > :01:10.in St Helier. Our reporter Jen Smith is lhve

:01:11. > :01:23.at the scene now. Earlier today this scene here was

:01:24. > :01:29.very different, with police, fire crews and ambulances are blocking

:01:30. > :01:32.the road. The police have told the BBC and man in his 60s has died in

:01:33. > :01:37.an apparent industrial accident Jersey's police haven't

:01:38. > :01:39.given much information. I saw men

:01:40. > :01:42.in high visibility clothing and hard hats as well as emergency sdrvices

:01:43. > :01:45.busy in the drive of that btilding. The family has been told

:01:46. > :01:48.and is being supported by police. An investigation has started

:01:49. > :01:50.into what has happened. Victims of abuse within Jersey's

:01:51. > :01:54.care system will be able to give evidence within a safe

:01:55. > :01:55.and non`hostile environment. That's the aim of the Indepdndent

:01:56. > :01:58.Jersey Care Inquiry, a publhc hearing into allegations of historic

:01:59. > :02:01.abuse, due to start this sulmer Prosecutions were made

:02:02. > :02:04.following police investigathons but some victims still don't feel

:02:05. > :02:08.they have had justice. This former children's home was

:02:09. > :02:15.at the heart of a major police investigation

:02:16. > :02:18.into claims of historic child abuse within Jersey's care system.

:02:19. > :02:22.Seven prosecutions were madd. But seven years on, some victims

:02:23. > :02:26.still feel they've never received Now they have a place to give them

:02:27. > :02:31.a voice. This room will be the home

:02:32. > :02:34.of the Independent Jersey C`re Inquiry, a public hearing conducted

:02:35. > :02:38.by a UK legal team with no Even though it?s an open inpuiry,

:02:39. > :02:44.efforts have been made to encourage Most witnesses will give evhdence

:02:45. > :02:52.from this chair, but as it hs a sensitive and delicate issud, some

:02:53. > :02:55.may not have the confidence to speak So they have the option

:02:56. > :03:03.of keeping their identity private and speaking behind this gl`ss

:03:04. > :03:05.screen. There is also an option

:03:06. > :03:09.of a video link, so the leg`l team can hear from all those involved,

:03:10. > :03:21.even if they're not in the hsland. The whole hearing recognises the

:03:22. > :03:25.subject matter we are dealing with, child abuse over a substanthal

:03:26. > :03:30.period of time. Sensitivitids are obvious and so a lot of thotght has

:03:31. > :03:34.been given relating to the way the proceedings will be conductdd in the

:03:35. > :03:36.environment in which evidence will be given.

:03:37. > :03:38.The Jersey Care Leavers Association hopes this will mean

:03:39. > :03:44.as many people as possible will come forward, no matter how diffhcult.

:03:45. > :03:49.People came forward initially when this all broke out, and as ` result

:03:50. > :03:53.they have been ridiculed and attacked, which has made thdm go

:03:54. > :03:58.back into hiding, for want of a word. We now need those people to

:03:59. > :04:02.come back out and tell their story and not to be afraid, that this is

:04:03. > :04:05.the only way it is going to work. The public hearings are due to

:04:06. > :04:08.start here in the next few weeks. It's predicted it could takd up to

:04:09. > :04:12.a year to try to uncover thd truth of what abuse went on within

:04:13. > :04:16.the island's child care system. A celebrated Guernsey fundr`iser was

:04:17. > :04:19.one of three people injured in a Channel swimmer Roger Allsopp is now

:04:20. > :04:25.in a stable condition The accident happened on thd Vazon

:04:26. > :04:33.Coast Road, as Mike Wilkins reports. On a beautiful day on Guernsey's

:04:34. > :04:36.west coast, a horrific sight to see. The head`on crash happened xesterday

:04:37. > :04:39.afternoon and left two other people The driver of this vintage car was

:04:40. > :04:45.73`year`old Roger Allsopp, a retired surgeon who is best known

:04:46. > :04:49.for being the oldest man to swim the English Channel as part

:04:50. > :04:53.of his cancer fundraising efforts. Police say he was thrown out of the

:04:54. > :05:08.vehicle by the force of the impact. The occupant of the classic car was

:05:09. > :05:10.ejected from the vehicle and both drivers have been taken to @

:05:11. > :05:14.The occupants of the other car, a 64`year`old man and a 67`xear`old

:05:15. > :05:17.woman, were trapped and had to be cut out by Fire and Rescue.

:05:18. > :05:19.The police are appealing for witnesses as part

:05:20. > :05:26.Meanwhile, a woman's in hospital in the UK after being knockdd

:05:27. > :05:29.unconscious when she came off her bike on a cycle track in Jersey

:05:30. > :05:33.It happened as the woman in her 20s and her friend rdached

:05:34. > :05:36.the final lay`by on the strdtch of track between Coronation Park

:05:37. > :05:39.She's being treated for a head injury at

:05:40. > :05:46.Condor Ferries has confirmed plans to buy a new larger ship

:05:47. > :05:48.which will not fit the current berth at Weymouth.

:05:49. > :05:51.The company is asking the local council to fund extensive

:05:52. > :05:54.It says without the investment it could leave

:05:55. > :05:58.Weymouth and move all its s`ilings to and from the Channel Isl`nds 30

:05:59. > :06:12.Sick bags down by 70% and cancellations over the last winter,

:06:13. > :06:18.the worst winter in 200 years, would have been down 90% so that hs a

:06:19. > :06:22.pretty compelling reason for it There are facilities here that could

:06:23. > :06:23.be made available and we ard working with colleagues at Weymouth to make

:06:24. > :06:25.them available. Guernsey's Environment Department

:06:26. > :06:27.has gone out to tender CT Plus' contract with the States

:06:28. > :06:33.expires in April next year and there are major changes planned

:06:34. > :06:36.for the way the service is run. One option is a free servicd run

:06:37. > :06:39.by the States. There's been criticism

:06:40. > :06:42.of route changes and a new fare You're watching the BBC

:06:43. > :06:45.in the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin

:06:46. > :06:51.and Natalie: We visit the village raffling

:07:06. > :07:08.seagulls are a regular feattre But the impending closure

:07:09. > :07:11.of Guernsey's landfill site could From 2016, the States want to start

:07:12. > :07:16.processing food waste So what will happen to the birds who

:07:17. > :07:21.rely on the Mont Cuet tip for food? For gulls,

:07:22. > :07:26.it's an all`you`can`eat buffet. In a couple of years, though,

:07:27. > :07:29.it'll be all change here. As Guernsey starts exporting

:07:30. > :07:32.its waste, So the question is

:07:33. > :07:47.whether the gulls will too? With the waste strategy we. Disposal

:07:48. > :07:53.of black bag waste into this site in 2016, so from them no organhc waste

:07:54. > :07:57.will come into the site and it will then be developed for green waste

:07:58. > :07:59.composting. I don't think wd will see many seagulls here once it

:08:00. > :08:02.closes for food waste. Paul's been researching the islands?

:08:03. > :08:05.gulls for years, and now has a better idea of how the ch`nges

:08:06. > :08:15.at the tip will affect them. We have discovered that a lot of the

:08:16. > :08:20.girls using landfill or nonbreeding birds in the summer coming from

:08:21. > :08:26.other colonies in the south of England, France, and a lot of

:08:27. > :08:29.immature birds. It you think of it as a magnet for girls, it whll

:08:30. > :08:36.switch off and then the attraction is over and goals are successful

:08:37. > :08:37.birds generally, and they whll react quickly and we will find a lot of

:08:38. > :08:41.birds don't come here. The gulls still have a couple

:08:42. > :08:44.of years to dine out here. But they'll have to make

:08:45. > :08:47.alternative dinner plans once Guernsey tennis star Heather Watson

:08:48. > :08:52.will start the grass court season She moves up 23 places in the new

:08:53. > :09:00.rankings to 69th in the world. A pirate ship crewed by people

:09:01. > :09:04.of all physical abilities h`s been Tenacious is one

:09:05. > :09:08.of only two tall ships in the world that lets disabled and able`bodied

:09:09. > :09:12.people sail together side bx side. It's made its annual visit to

:09:13. > :09:14.the Channel Islands as part of its summer programme with

:09:15. > :09:17.the Jubilee Sailing Trust before leaving for Brixham tomorrow,

:09:18. > :09:30.and it seems the weather has been We had some squally weather but

:09:31. > :09:35.being anchored before we cale here, it has been pleasant. We cannot

:09:36. > :09:43.really complain about the wdather, although normally we do, but not

:09:44. > :09:50.now. David, are we expecting more fine weather? It looks like high

:09:51. > :09:55.pressure will come back and it will be our friend in the latter part of

:09:56. > :10:00.the week. Still a risk of showers, and sunshine tomorrow, but dqually

:10:01. > :10:04.perhaps the risk of 12 showdrs especially in the afternoon, but

:10:05. > :10:10.most shower activity is overnight tonight. This area of low pressure

:10:11. > :10:15.is the culprit. It begins to move away from us. This is this dvening,

:10:16. > :10:21.by the middle of tomorrow it has travelled north to Scotland, lit by

:10:22. > :10:25.a weak ridge of high pressure which develops into a fairly major system

:10:26. > :10:31.across the English Channel. That means a lot of dry weather `nd some

:10:32. > :10:36.more sunshine. At the moment we have a risk of showers overnight. Those

:10:37. > :10:40.showers could be heavy. Thex tend to fade away towards dawn, so xou may

:10:41. > :10:46.briefly get some sunshine in the morning. Quite a breezy start to the

:10:47. > :10:52.day, winds from the South or Southwest. Sunny spells for the

:10:53. > :11:01.morning, the hats a few showers will form in the afternoon. Thosd could

:11:02. > :11:05.turn out to be mild, with a top temperature around 18 degreds along

:11:06. > :11:11.the coastline but as much as 19 or 20 inland on larger islands. The

:11:12. > :11:15.winds are from the South or the south`west, up to a force of four,

:11:16. > :11:22.occasionally five in the morning, generally fair to light with

:11:23. > :11:31.generally good visibility. There are times of high water. For our

:11:32. > :11:41.surfers, expect the surfing to be small but usable, with a sottherly

:11:42. > :11:46.breeze. Perhaps a little choppy with the onshore breeze on the wdstern

:11:47. > :11:51.side of the islands. It will be a fine spell of weather. Look at the

:11:52. > :11:58.temperatures, possibly 23 ddgrees later in the week. A lot of sunshine

:11:59. > :12:06.to enjoy but it is strong stnshine, you be is at `` ultraviolet level of

:12:07. > :12:14.seven or eight. So be careftl. Have a good evening. We apologisd for

:12:15. > :12:19.sound issues we seem to be having during the forecast there. Hf you

:12:20. > :12:28.want to send any weather pictures, the address is online. If rdminder

:12:29. > :12:30.of our top story tonight. A man in his 60s has been khlled

:12:56. > :12:58.for the economics factors to line up to make this happen. But another

:12:59. > :13:05.reason may be that in this local area, wages are very low. The local

:13:06. > :13:10.community are used to that, and the local community is here bec`use of

:13:11. > :13:13.that. There was some concern about the environment, but the

:13:14. > :13:17.this investment, we want thdse jobs this investment, we want thdse jobs

:13:23. > :13:25.Dartmoor. The mine is expected to start producing tungsten in around a

:13:26. > :13:30.year. This weekend across the South West,

:13:31. > :13:33.thousands of people have bedn And for one man

:13:34. > :13:36.from Cornwall the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings has been

:13:37. > :13:38.particularly poignant. A Royal Engineer, he was ond

:13:39. > :13:41.of the first onto Sword Beach. And Reg Jago's memories are

:13:42. > :13:59.as vivid now as 70 years ago. We were dead scared. There hs no

:14:00. > :14:05.other word for it. We did not like to show it to our needs. `` our

:14:06. > :14:11.mates. We were laughing, but we did not feel like that. I'd did more

:14:12. > :14:18.than 200 yards in a couple of seconds, I think. 75% of us got off

:14:19. > :14:29.the beach OK. Their objective was to build a bridge at Pegasus. When we

:14:30. > :14:33.got to Pegasus, we had two options. There was the mention of so and so

:14:34. > :14:37.not being here, so you would take over. We were building bridges under

:14:38. > :16:46.The pain from the fire all the time.

:16:47. > :16:51.never talked to anyone. I h`ve never even told my son. I don't think any

:16:52. > :16:57.soldier looking back would think he would have rather negotiated in some

:16:58. > :17:02.way and have peace. When yot go to bed, you don't sleep. You constantly

:17:03. > :17:08.see the faces of the boys you are way too are no longer with ts and

:17:09. > :17:10.you can't forget them, it kdeps running back he did together in the

:17:11. > :17:21.last you had together. Well this weekend was a chance

:17:22. > :17:25.for everyone to remember thd Among the events held was one

:17:26. > :17:30.in Torbay, where a flotilla 24,000 US troops left

:17:31. > :17:37.from Torquay for Normandy. Here's a flavour

:17:38. > :18:02.of the commemorations. An awful lot, an awful lot. Just to

:18:03. > :18:14.say thank you. Marvelous. It was in Omaha. The weather could not spoil

:18:15. > :18:27.it. I think it was great. I'd say bravo to everyone who organhsed it.

:18:28. > :18:32.Some moving memories and commemorations.

:18:33. > :18:35.And you can read more about the weekend's commemorations

:18:36. > :18:38.The flood damaged Somerset village of Moorland had

:18:39. > :18:42.The Earl and Countess of Wessex spent about an hour there.

:18:43. > :18:45.It was part of a day which saw them complete no fewer

:18:46. > :18:48.then six engagements in the county, from opening a hospital to

:18:49. > :19:03.Raising the flag for a visit which was to raise morale in this battered

:19:04. > :19:09.community. It is not everyd`y you get to chat to royalty over the

:19:10. > :19:14.garden fence. Both the Earl and Countess of Wessex were gendrally ``

:19:15. > :19:20.genuinely surprised by the scale of the damage here. Just about every

:19:21. > :19:25.home here was swamped by thd floodwaters four months ago. I'd

:19:26. > :19:30.think it is really nice and a real morale booster to see everyone happy

:19:31. > :19:34.and smiling. We have had so many bad times to stop it has lifted the

:23:34. > :23:38.anybody is eligible to win first prize except people from thd

:23:39. > :23:48.neighboring town. There is ` long history of rivalry between the two

:23:49. > :23:51.towns. I am not sure if people would accept a sheriff from the other

:23:52. > :23:58.town. There is nothing like a sheriff badge to fire your

:23:59. > :24:05.imagination. Come on, horse I think this one is lame! He is mord than

:24:06. > :24:10.lame. It is worth it just for the sausage roll. Fantastic. Soleone who

:24:11. > :24:18.is very good at looking important on street corners is with us now for

:24:19. > :24:26.the weather. I try not to, `ctually. We have had a few showers through

:24:27. > :24:29.the weekends, but otherwise a reasonable Saturday and Sunday. High

:24:30. > :24:33.pressure is coming back this week to settle things down and give us some

:24:34. > :24:38.more about June sunshine. It stays warm, but much drier. From Wednesday

:24:39. > :24:43.onwards, the high`pressure takes charge. At the moment, an area of

:24:44. > :24:47.low pressure is throwing a few showers towards us, and we will

:24:48. > :24:51.continue overnight. The low`pressure travels up to the north of Scotland,

:24:52. > :24:55.and what replaces it is this area of high pressure, which develops into a

:24:56. > :24:59.major sale of high pressure across southern Britain from Wednesday

:25:00. > :25:04.onwards on the but it keeps us try and find for the rest of thhs week.
