:00:10. > :00:14.Good evening. Caring under the spotlight.

:00:15. > :00:17.For the first time, States`run care homes in Jersey will be inspected

:00:18. > :00:22.and regulated, after the government unanimously passed new legislation.

:00:23. > :00:40.I think it is a good day for those vulnerable patients in our

:00:41. > :00:48.community. We are standing in the middle of a

:00:49. > :00:50.squire iron age house. The discovery made after a two`month

:00:51. > :01:00.dig in this field. For the first time, States`run care

:01:01. > :01:03.homes in Jersey will be inspected and regulated, after the government

:01:04. > :01:08.unanimously passed new legislation. The Health Minister herself told

:01:09. > :01:10.the assembly that the current system wasn't fit for purpose and

:01:11. > :01:13.didn't protect people from `buse. From carers not turning up to work,

:01:14. > :01:20.to court cases over the quality Jersey's dated legislation didn t

:01:21. > :01:40.protect those who needed it. There have been quite a few

:01:41. > :01:44.complaints into the inspecthon Department about the type of care

:01:45. > :01:46.being given. We know a couple of those have ended up in court. It is

:01:47. > :01:47.a real issue today. It's hoped

:01:48. > :01:49.the new law will change that. Previously only private card

:01:50. > :01:52.homes in Jersey were inspected. Now States`run care

:01:53. > :01:53.homes will be checked. Care workers ` including those based

:01:54. > :01:56.in islander's homes ` And an independent regulator,

:01:57. > :02:12.the Health Care and We are very much aware that there is

:02:13. > :02:17.a big gap in the law in auxhliary carer, nursing agencies and those

:02:18. > :02:24.providing care in the community They haven't always been registered.

:02:25. > :02:26.Health and social services have not been regulated or inspected either.

:02:27. > :02:29.There was a rush to put this through the States and no one voted

:02:30. > :02:31.against it ` a clear messagd things weren't right.

:02:32. > :02:34.It's a complex law and one that will take some ironing

:02:35. > :02:38.But if all goes to plan, within the next two years, Jersey's care system

:02:39. > :02:45.Aurigny's new jet made its first commercial flight

:02:46. > :02:51.The States owned airline botght the Embraer 195 for around ?25 lillion

:02:52. > :02:57.It was felt it was necessarx to help guarantee that life`line service

:02:58. > :03:19.makes its first commercial flight today.

:03:20. > :03:30.It's interesting to see how much of the journey time it has cut by being

:03:31. > :03:34.a jet. It's a big aeroplane. And very excited. I didn't realhse that

:03:35. > :03:35.this would be the first flight. I feel quite fortunate to havd a crack

:03:36. > :03:37.at it. And among the passengers ` @urigny's

:03:38. > :03:42.boss, pleased it's finally here It's here, it on`time and on budget.

:03:43. > :03:47.It looking great. When Flybe pulled out of Gatwick,

:03:48. > :03:49.Aurigny was quick to put A bigger plane `

:03:50. > :04:08.which it hopes will help it meet Typically, it could last 25 to 0

:04:09. > :04:10.years. We feel it will bring a lot of value for many years to come

:04:11. > :04:12.And expecting to fly around000, 00 more passengers to the capital

:04:13. > :04:14.each year ` despite this massive investment, Aurigny says its

:04:15. > :04:26.All the States have asked us to do is break even, not to make ` profit.

:04:27. > :04:27.We are expecting to be on track by the end of this year. Our rtnning

:04:28. > :04:31.rate will be to break even. And with its finances on thd up

:04:32. > :04:34.Aurigny says there's no need for passengers to worry

:04:35. > :04:36.the costs of getting the Gatwick Meanwhile, air passengers from the

:04:37. > :04:41.Channel Islands can now transfer The low cost airline Norweghan is

:04:42. > :04:47.launching direct flights, three times a week from Gatwick to JFK

:04:48. > :04:51.airport in New York ` as well as twice weekly services to Los Angeles

:04:52. > :04:54.and Fort Lauderdale in Florhda. Direct flights with Delta Ahr Lines

:04:55. > :04:56.to New York were axed A woman's been arrested following

:04:57. > :05:01.two separate incidents in Jdrsey The first time it happened was

:05:02. > :05:06.in Liberation Square on the 22nd June, and the second was in the

:05:07. > :05:10.Royal Square on the 29th of June. The 50 year`old is assisting

:05:11. > :05:16.police with their inquiries. A 13`year`old girl is being treated

:05:17. > :05:18.in hospital after being hit It happened when she stepped out

:05:19. > :05:24.onto Longueville Road after 8pm She's was treated at the scdne

:05:25. > :05:27.by paramedics, and then takdn to Her injuries aren't believed

:05:28. > :05:34.to be life threatening. What skills do

:05:35. > :05:36.employers really want? That's what Guernsey is

:05:37. > :05:39.trying to find out. The States has commissioned a survey

:05:40. > :05:42.of local businesses, to identify They say the results will hdlp shape

:05:43. > :05:49.training courses on offer ` and help reduce the island's

:05:50. > :05:52.reliance on housing licences. A butcher, a baker,

:05:53. > :06:02.a candlestick maker ` traditional jobs from the ntrsery

:06:03. > :06:09.rhyme ` but still valid tod`y. There's not many butchers ldft in

:06:10. > :06:12.the island, so going into bttchery It's always good to have

:06:13. > :06:22.a trade behind your belt. Bakery is one of the jobs where

:06:23. > :06:25.you need to get your hands dirty so You can't learn it out of a book,

:06:26. > :06:33.you have to physically work It would be nice

:06:34. > :06:36.if there were more young people with With the islands dependency

:06:37. > :06:44.on the finance industry, one skill we're not lacking here

:06:45. > :06:47.in Guernsey is economics. But if we broaden it out further,

:06:48. > :07:03.we see there are many other skills We need to make sure that all the

:07:04. > :07:06.people with skills on the island are utilised so that we don't bring

:07:07. > :07:11.extra people to the island with all the cast and extra burden on

:07:12. > :07:15.resources that brings. Lane and her team are asking three

:07:16. > :07:22.or 400 businesses to take p`rt in the 20 minute survey. If skhlls are

:07:23. > :07:26.lacking, training can be provided. Knowing the skills that Guernsey

:07:27. > :07:30.needs to improve its economx is very important. If we can help pdople who

:07:31. > :07:32.are not in work to learn those skills, they can become part of the

:07:33. > :07:36.workforce. The results will be ready

:07:37. > :07:39.by September ` then it's up to local islanders up skill and give

:07:40. > :07:56.the employers what they need. Coming up: If you thought through in

:07:57. > :08:06.a Frisbee was fun, think ag`in. These guys take it really sdriously.

:08:07. > :08:08.Guernsey's Commonwealth Gamds athletes have been told thex'll be

:08:09. > :08:11.competing against some of the best competitors in the world at

:08:12. > :08:15.Last night the 38 strong squad met for

:08:16. > :08:19.a photo and were briefed on travel and security details for thd games

:08:20. > :08:30.Those in charge say Team Guernsey is ready

:08:31. > :08:38.They're certainly the best prepared team to enter the Commonwealth

:08:39. > :08:44.Games. Whether or not that will translate itself into personal bats

:08:45. > :08:46.and medals is difficult to say. The competition `` the level of

:08:47. > :08:54.competition at the games is extremely high. You will be

:08:55. > :08:57.competing against the best `thletes in the world rather than thd best in

:08:58. > :09:00.the 20 or so small islands. Evidence of the first Iron @ge house

:09:01. > :09:03.has been discovered in Jersdy, after a two`month dig in a field

:09:04. > :09:06.in St Clement. The excavation has unearthed objects

:09:07. > :09:09.dating back over two thousand years. But it's the dwelling

:09:10. > :09:12.and surrounding lanes that have got archaeologists excited `

:09:13. > :09:17.as John De La Haye discoverdd. I?m standing in the middle

:09:18. > :09:22.of the house...It may look like a line

:09:23. > :09:27.in the mud to the untrained eye ` but to archaeologist

:09:28. > :09:43.Robert Waterhouse, this is The house stands within a l`ndscape

:09:44. > :09:51.that includes hedges, ditchds and even ailing. If I walk out of the

:09:52. > :09:53.house, we can walk along thd lane to another part of the site.

:09:54. > :09:55.The team have been excavating this site for two months.

:09:56. > :09:57.They've found evidence of an animal paddock `

:09:58. > :10:01.as well of bits of pottery `nd bones ` which all help build a picture of

:10:02. > :10:06.But it's the shape of this first dwelling that shows early

:10:07. > :10:23.In other parts of Britain, we have iron age houses which are chrcular.

:10:24. > :10:25.Hearing we have a squire hotse which is much more normal with wh`t we

:10:26. > :10:27.have found on the continent. With this dig coming to end,

:10:28. > :10:30.Robert and his team are turning their attentions to other shtes

:10:31. > :10:33.in the east of the island ` where they believe more evidence

:10:34. > :10:47.of Iron Age life will be buried Fascinating stuff. I had a beautiful

:10:48. > :10:49.flight back from Guernsey this morning. Is this good weathdr going

:10:50. > :11:03.to last? We could use some rain across the

:11:04. > :11:06.islands and we will probablx get a little bits. Not as much as we would

:11:07. > :11:11.like but certainly some wet weather for the gardens and fields `s we

:11:12. > :11:14.move towards this weekend. Lainly dry tomorrow but there might be a

:11:15. > :11:19.fuse box of rain later in the day. We will get some morning sunshine.

:11:20. > :11:24.Poised to moving is a line of cloud and rain which will probablx arrive

:11:25. > :11:27.into the evening. It may be an overnight feature. Tomorrow night

:11:28. > :11:32.and into the small hours on Saturday, it could be slow to clear

:11:33. > :11:35.but will eventually moved ott of the way. A fresher feel come Saturday

:11:36. > :11:43.with north`westerly winds and the risk of some showers. For the most

:11:44. > :11:47.part, dry and a fine evening. There may be a bit more in the wax of

:11:48. > :11:54.cloud floating around but it won't stop it being dry. 14 degreds is the

:11:55. > :11:59.minimum temperature. Tomorrow we are expecting to see at least a morning

:12:00. > :12:06.dry with some hazy sunshine. It does cloud over by the time we gdt into

:12:07. > :12:11.the afternoon. It will take its time before it produces any rain. Towards

:12:12. > :12:18.the end of the afternoon sun patchy rain will arrive across Guernsey.

:12:19. > :12:26.The temperatures won't be as high today. `` high as today. 19 or 0

:12:27. > :12:33.will be the maximum tomorrow. There is a breeze coming in from the west

:12:34. > :12:40.or south west. For the coastal waters forecast, the winds `re

:12:41. > :12:42.south`westerly. Fair Nansen showery outbreaks of rain and gener`lly good

:12:43. > :12:59.visibility. Times of high w`ter The outlook is for us to sed more

:13:00. > :13:04.unsettled and cooler condithons For the surfers, bigger waves. We will

:13:05. > :13:10.see slightly bigger waves tomorrow of two to three seats. As wd head

:13:11. > :13:14.into the weekend, we will probably see some slightly higher waves so

:13:15. > :13:19.good news for our servers. Hf you are heading into France, sole wet

:13:20. > :13:20.weather here as well. Outbrdaks of rain across mid and central France

:13:21. > :13:28.over the next 24 hours will stop. That's it from us. I'm back with

:13:29. > :15:11.your evening updates at 8:30pm. in the sea. These are just ` few of

:15:12. > :15:14.the old discarded like thosd collected by volunteers. It is

:15:15. > :15:14.amazing It's collected by volunteers. It is

:15:18. > :15:20.these days, especially just around the corner from where we're

:15:21. > :15:27.standing. He brushes, flip`flops, a gas mask and also a children's toy.

:15:28. > :15:33.As well as this. That is a plastic bottle from who knows when, but it

:15:34. > :15:38.shows just how long plastic hangs around the environment. The work to

:15:39. > :15:42.clear plastic from the area has been filmed by Bryony Stokes. Sole of the

:15:43. > :15:45.plastic has been sorted and given to artists to publicise the imlense

:15:46. > :15:49.skill of the problem. The bdach is now clear after the removal of

:15:50. > :15:54.plastic. Visitors told us there needs to be greater cooperation It

:15:55. > :16:00.has to be an international thing. Everybody has to do their p`rt and

:16:01. > :16:05.play their role in keeping the countryside, the seaside, clean It

:16:06. > :16:08.is a symptom of the amount of packaging available. Packaghng

:16:09. > :16:14.becomes rubbish and we are accustomed as a society to throwing

:16:15. > :16:19.it away. Maybe the 5p tax they will bring in more help with the banks.

:16:20. > :16:25.Bottles, I do not know. Maybe they should start. `` maybe they should

:16:26. > :16:30.start giving money back on them like they used it with the glass ones. A

:16:31. > :16:33.major conference will take place later this month to try and find

:16:34. > :16:36.ways to ensure our coastlind can be cleaner for us all to enjoy.

:16:37. > :16:39.And tomorrow we'll be hearing about a Cornish surfer's idda to

:16:40. > :16:42.remove plastics from our co`stline with his Two Minute Beach Clean

:16:43. > :16:46.campaign, and it's attracting attention from all over the world.

:16:47. > :16:48.Experts say it's crucial colmercial woodland

:16:49. > :16:52.in the South West is expanddd to meet a growing demand for thmber.

:16:53. > :16:56.In the next 20 to 25 years, the UK will experience "peak timber"

:16:57. > :16:58.` that's when our domestic supply of wood will start decreasing,

:16:59. > :17:03.As Spotlight's Andrea Ormsbx reports, at the moment, timber sales

:17:04. > :17:17.There are 200,000 hectares of woodland in the south`west, just

:17:18. > :17:22.under half of them are commdrcial. 50 of them are here in good stone

:17:23. > :17:28.forest on the edge of Dartmoor in South Devon. There are 4000 tonnes

:17:29. > :17:37.of trees to be harvested here. It will take about two months. These

:17:38. > :17:45.trees are planted as a crop. As a country, we are largely depdndent on

:17:46. > :17:48.imported timber. But with commercial crops like this, we become lore

:17:49. > :17:55.self`sufficient in timber from the UK. It is big business in the UK,

:17:56. > :17:59.forestry and the timber processing industry employing 32,000 pdople.

:18:00. > :18:04.But when you think the UK is coloured by only 13% of fordst

:18:05. > :18:09.compared to 40% in Europe, dxperts say there is plenty of room for

:18:10. > :18:13.growth. Global population is growing by 3% a year. Global demand for

:18:14. > :18:19.timber is growing with that growth in population. The UK is a net

:18:20. > :18:23.importer of timber. It will never satisfy its own domestic deland for

:18:24. > :18:28.timber. Consequently, we nedd to keep planting more timber,

:18:29. > :18:31.establishing new planting shtes That does not need to be at the

:18:32. > :18:35.expense of beautiful agricultural environments that we enjoy hn the

:18:36. > :18:42.south`west. There can be balanced by their needs to be more planting of

:18:43. > :18:46.commercial trees. Sales are booming. The wood from your local all over

:18:47. > :18:50.the country. The south`west is getting a reputation for world class

:18:51. > :18:54.timber. In the south`west, ` lot of the crops are being sent, so that

:18:55. > :18:59.means removing smaller trees, leaving the bigger, larger `nd

:19:00. > :19:02.better quality trees so that when it comes to harvesting them, they are

:19:03. > :19:07.of better quality. There is a demand from timber in the south`west. It

:19:08. > :19:13.takes 35 seconds to fail and cut a mature tree. And 35 years to grow

:19:14. > :19:15.one. He that this forest, the thinking long term. `` here at this

:19:16. > :19:17.forest. The waterwheels have been ttrning

:19:18. > :19:20.at Finch Foundry near Okehalpton It's the last remaining

:19:21. > :19:23.water`powered forge in Engl`nd, offering a remarkable glimpse

:19:24. > :19:26.into a bygone world of industry It is now celebrating

:19:27. > :19:41.it's 200th birthday. This is where history comes alive.

:19:42. > :19:46.Finch Foundry. There is still an Finch Foundry. There is still an

:19:47. > :19:50.atmosphere of when the water`powered forge was busy with 27 staff working

:19:51. > :19:54.in a successful business manufacturing 400 tools a d`y. The

:19:55. > :20:01.Finch Foundry will the second largest employer in the are`. They

:20:12. > :20:19.sorts. We have free water wheels and the Hammer practice from 1740. You

:20:20. > :20:21.can see things working here. It is probably the only place in Durope

:20:22. > :20:27.where you can see it working together. For the last two decades

:20:28. > :20:30.of its 200 year history, Thd National Trust have kept thd foundry

:20:31. > :20:36.open, turning it into a livhng museum. This timber has been dated

:20:37. > :20:39.back to 1750 and was taken from an old ship. It helps to build this rat

:20:48. > :20:53.working at the moment. But H found this lovely footage of it in action

:20:54. > :20:57.43 years ago. This is the h`ndle that runs the main sluice. People at

:20:58. > :21:00.back and that releases the water and gets the real coming.

:21:01. > :21:05.The real terms, but of course it will not run. That is due to

:21:06. > :21:09.problems with the water pool and the pivots on the Hammer. It might cost

:21:10. > :21:15.a lot of money. We are lookhng to raise that money. It is hopdd they

:21:16. > :21:40.will be able to come up with some ordinations and bright and dars ``

:21:41. > :21:45.bright ideas. Frisby is a proper sport and as Hamish Marshall

:21:46. > :21:48.reports, more than half the GB team for the forthcoming European

:21:49. > :21:52.Championships are from Exetdr. It started as some fun with a biscuit

:21:53. > :21:58.tin lid on the beach in the 196 s. Now it is a proper sport and these

:21:59. > :22:02.guys are amongst the best in Europe. Played on a football pitch, boys and

:22:03. > :22:07.girls play together in a match which the referee themselves. You cannot

:22:08. > :22:11.run with the discount if yot drop it when it goes `` then it goes

:22:12. > :22:17.straight to the opposition. Additionally competitive. Rdally

:22:18. > :22:25.fast and competitive. When xou see it being played at a high ldvel it

:22:26. > :22:29.is really exciting. Just to show the speed of this game, Millie hs

:22:30. > :22:32.counting to ten. I have to get rid of the Frisbee before she does that

:22:33. > :22:35.I have to get rid of the Frhsbee before she does that what I've

:22:36. > :22:38.always position. It is like scoring a try in rugby and each gamd lasts

:22:39. > :22:45.for one hour. Fitness and skill are both tested. It is hard to keep up

:22:46. > :22:51.with long points where we c`nnot score and they cannot score. It gets

:22:52. > :22:55.tiring. Does it get practic`l? It does. You have to think of different

:23:05. > :23:08.are off to the European Championships in Italy next month

:23:09. > :23:12.and all for GB captain 's play here. Most people think of football,

:23:13. > :23:17.cricket, rugby. Why do you like Frisbee? Since Year 7 it has been

:23:18. > :23:23.there for us. I thought it would be nice to try and have carried on and
