:01:03. > :01:05.large proportion of the police force's work,
:01:06. > :01:10.as Emma Chambers reports. It's a crime that can happen
:01:11. > :01:12.anywhere, even within a victim?s own home
:01:13. > :01:18.a place that should be safe. Domestic abuse is
:01:19. > :01:20.a big concern to Guernsey Police. Last year,
:01:21. > :01:25.they had 682 reported inciddnts That's 23 fewer than 2012
:01:26. > :01:30.and 120 less than 2011. Although the number
:01:31. > :01:33.of reported cases have dropped over the last few years, domestic abuse
:01:34. > :01:50.still makes up a large proportion It is a problem in Guernsey, it is a
:01:51. > :01:54.problem all around the world, and it is something everybody needs to work
:01:55. > :01:58.harder to tackle and across the spectrum, people need to cole
:01:59. > :02:02.forward. If you are concerndd the loved ones, speak to people, it
:02:03. > :02:05.doesn't have to be the police, but we need people to come forw`rd.
:02:06. > :02:07.And with over half of those cases recorded in 2013
:02:08. > :02:09.as repeat incidents, Guernsey Police have given out
:02:10. > :02:22.It can be activated either by the red button or pressing this, that
:02:23. > :02:26.they can carry around the home. It phones the police station, we have a
:02:27. > :02:28.map of the address and we whll attend those incidents as m`tter of
:02:29. > :02:29.priority. Specialist training
:02:30. > :02:31.and a multi`agency approach is But getting victims to speak out is
:02:32. > :02:55.hardest yet most effective weapon The Guernsey charity Safer hs
:02:56. > :02:59.working with the Guernsey police and Dr Maggie Costen join the e`rly and
:03:00. > :03:06.said that the figures do not save the minor delays ``show the whole
:03:07. > :03:10.problem. Throughout their lhfetime, one in three women will be subject
:03:11. > :03:16.to some degree of domestic `buse and one in seven men, and sadly, I think
:03:17. > :03:24.the figures are probably less than the actual number of cases. Half of
:03:25. > :03:30.the cases are repeat offenddrs. What more can be done to stop th`t? What
:03:31. > :03:37.can be done locally is therd is a perpetrator programme run bx the
:03:38. > :03:43.Hampton trust which perpetr`tors can actually self refer for. Thhs has
:03:44. > :03:46.been going for about two ye`rs and it is an excellent programmd which
:03:47. > :03:51.we hope will cut down the rdpeat offending rate. And it is not just
:03:52. > :03:55.women being abused these daxs, more and more men are coming to the
:03:56. > :04:03.surface saying they are being abused domestically as well. There are very
:04:04. > :04:08.definitely male victims are often it is more difficult for them to
:04:09. > :04:14.disclose what is happening than females and the other incre`se we
:04:15. > :04:20.are seeing is the number of people in same`sex relationships who have
:04:21. > :04:24.an abusive relationship. And the message to someone suffering from
:04:25. > :04:30.domestic abuse and is perhaps too scared to speak up about it? What
:04:31. > :04:36.would you say to them? Therd are helpful agencies out there that all
:04:37. > :04:41.provide a confidential servhce. If anyone is at risk of physic`l
:04:42. > :04:47.violence, the police protection unit are an excellent band of people
:04:48. > :04:55.From there, there are other organisations, like Safer, like
:04:56. > :04:59.Refuge and Victims Support, all of whom are happy to listen to someone
:05:00. > :05:03.and offer them the correct help or the correct advice. Dr Magghe Costen
