:00:00. > :00:09.has been talking to Will Gompartz. That's all from

:00:10. > :00:14.An earthquake of 4.2 magnittde has shaken the Channel Islands today.

:00:15. > :00:18.The epicentre was about sevdn miles to the west of Jersey

:00:19. > :00:25.but it's thought to be the biggest tremor of its kind for 80 ydars

:00:26. > :00:31.The big shock wave we can sde there is the actual earthquake as it

:00:32. > :00:34.occurred around about lunchtime and if we look in detail we can actually

:00:35. > :00:37.see a couple of further shocks much smaller which are little

:00:38. > :00:43.aftershocks. Measuring a magnitude of 4.2, today's earthquake hs the

:00:44. > :00:48.biggest recorded in the Channel Islands ` as far as the Met Office

:00:49. > :00:49.are aware of. It happened jtst before 1:00, weather forecasters had

:00:50. > :01:05.It happened just before 1:00, One of the things very diffhcult to

:01:06. > :01:11.predict, at quicks. Some me`sure, if you like, of experience now in terms

:01:12. > :01:16.of the bigger ones but even there, it is still a young science in terms

:01:17. > :01:29.of predicting when they will occur. Channel Islands and we've even had

:01:30. > :01:30.reports it reached as far as France and the southwest of England. The

:01:31. > :01:40.last time the Channel Islands It is really quite scary because you

:01:41. > :01:46.didn't know what it was, I thought perhaps one of the oil tanks had

:01:47. > :01:49.blown up. I think we heard ht more than the ones on the ground floor.

:01:50. > :01:54.Initially I thought somebodx was jumping upstairs and there was a

:01:55. > :01:58.bigger noise which felt likd the rift was caving in. I thought,

:01:59. > :02:03.everybody is going wrong. The whole place seem to shake and everybody

:02:04. > :02:06.ran around, saying, did everyone feel about.

:02:07. > :02:10.experienced a big earthquakd was back in the 1930s, measuring 3. .

:02:11. > :02:14.The islands were due another, as they can occur every 60 years.

:02:15. > :02:18.Forecasters say now the energy has been released ` no more are

:02:19. > :02:25.expected, well for the next 60 years anyway.

:02:26. > :02:28.Concerns are being raised over Guernsey's plans to deal with

:02:29. > :02:33.There are proposals to stord 2, 00 tonnes of it at St Sampson's Harbour

:02:34. > :02:37.But two former members of the Environment Board, Ddputies

:02:38. > :02:45.Tony Spruce and Barry Paint say there are still too many unknowns.

:02:46. > :02:52.We don't have a contract signed we have no idea how big the buhldings

:02:53. > :02:58.are going to be, there has been no environmental impact assesslent done

:02:59. > :03:01.for noise, water, air pollution according to what plant is hnstalled

:03:02. > :03:10.so we have a lot of concerns. Guernsey's Environment Minister has

:03:11. > :03:12.told the BBC that the Waste Disposal Plan is

:03:13. > :03:14.an effective report that does the job of highlighting

:03:15. > :03:16.areas where the

:03:17. > :03:19.waste strategy needs further work. There are plans to build three

:03:20. > :03:22.hundred homes, shops and parks on The gas storage cylinder thdre is no

:03:23. > :03:27.longer used and Jersey Gas want to build houses

:03:28. > :03:31.with 255 parking spaces there. Gas will be stored at La Collette

:03:32. > :03:34.instead. There's an urgent need for better

:03:35. > :03:38.customer service from Jersex's taxi The responses from over 3,000 people

:03:39. > :03:44.study by Jersey's Consumer Council shows nearly half of people surveyed

:03:45. > :03:48.felt customer care was fair to poor. This has been rejected by

:03:49. > :03:52.Jersey's Taxi Association. Tasers could be used by Jersey

:03:53. > :03:55.Police as early as next week. Around half

:03:56. > :03:58.of the force's 25 firearms officers have been trained to use

:03:59. > :04:01.the stun guns which the States voted A warning ` this report contains

:04:02. > :04:24.some flashing images at the start. 50,000 volts sent shooting hnto

:04:25. > :04:35.today, a cardboard cut`out hn a training room. But tasers whll soon

:04:36. > :04:36.to be a reality for Jersey police officers.

:04:37. > :04:45.The firearms team is only called out around 15 times ` year

:04:46. > :04:49.What we have given them is ` distant control measure which is a less

:04:50. > :04:56.lethal option. and very rarely actually fire their

:04:57. > :05:00.guns so they don't anticipate using tasers very often either. Btt their

:05:01. > :05:02.very existence in the systel has some people worried. Testing it

:05:03. > :05:13.today, Jersey Police insist the People can get hurt. You don't know

:05:14. > :05:18.who you are shooting at the person may have a weak heart. I hope there

:05:19. > :05:22.is consideration given to it and there will be an ambulance behind to

:05:23. > :05:24.safeguard that person because that person could also be an innocent

:05:25. > :05:31.person being shot. weapon is largely safe. Thex say

:05:32. > :05:33.officers will be coached in judging the right situations to deploy it

:05:34. > :05:44.and they are very accountable. Ten Every police officer employdd has a

:05:45. > :05:49.Judy to be able to justify `ny use of force at all. Had to justify even

:05:50. > :05:54.shouting at individuals and we will try everything we can, everxthing at

:05:55. > :05:56.our disposal before resorting to this.

:05:57. > :06:02.of Jersey's 25 firearms offhcers are already trained up so in thdory

:06:03. > :06:05.tasers could be used right now. Training for all should be complete

:06:06. > :06:07.by October so next year's annual report should reveal how much

:06:08. > :06:13.they're helping the fight against crime.

:06:14. > :06:24.The weather is next. I bit of a change tomorrow. We will

:06:25. > :06:28.see more cloud and that may produce more rain, particularly in the

:06:29. > :06:34.second half of the day. It will get some odd colour. The cloud `t the

:06:35. > :06:37.moment is just coming into the western side of Ireland and that is

:06:38. > :06:46.the cloud that will produce the rain. There is also some thhcker

:06:47. > :06:50.cloud coming in. It is thesd weather systems out here that will hntroduce

:06:51. > :06:54.the thicker cloud and outbrdaks of rain throughout the weekend.

:06:55. > :06:57.Overnight tonight, we will see some clear skies but in the small hours

:06:58. > :07:01.of the morning, just enough cloud to generate the odd light showdr.

:07:02. > :07:06.Overnight temperatures no lower than 15 degrees. Tomorrow, briefly some

:07:07. > :07:10.brightness but on the whole, it is cloudy and the cloud will thicken

:07:11. > :07:17.through the morning and into the afternoon to produce a little bit of

:07:18. > :07:23.rain. 20 degrees, the top temperature. Slow to clear on Sunday

:07:24. > :07:24.morning, then it will brighten up in the afternoon. Mainly dry btt cloudy

:07:25. > :07:36.for the rest of the week. for the outlook, well we will see

:07:37. > :07:42.showers on anditturnsfresheronMonday.
